we'll explain that one. i'm michael steele, infer eamonn. let's get started. they can smell a loser. that is what i fox and center says of conservative media kingmakers rupert and laughlin murdaugh about their feelings for 2024 presidential candidate ron desantis. this week, rolling stone reported the florida governor is not making the murdochs expectations and the first family of fox's considerate dropping their support for him before it is too late. it seems folks hosts got the memo, publicly training there ire on the florida governor. it is a stark contrast to the chlorine coverage of the scent is just a few months ago. >> one place but it was a great big red wave is depicted on the cover of the new york post this morning, young gop star descended romp to victory in florida. it is cold defuture. >> you and i have made on previous occasions, and i think you've done a wonderful job. i'm wondering when this job begins to resonate in the numbers for you for president. >> i'm wondering what's going on with your campaign. that was a lot of optimism about running for president earlier in the year. here is this weekend's headline from politico. failure to launch, florida governor ron desantis's campaign to topple donald trump has stalled. >> it doesn't have the campaign skills, he is talking about failure to launch, he is thinking. you are right, vivek will possum pretty soon. i don't think he has to drop out. he's just going to fade out, weather and die on the vine. >> starting to sound a lot like depast. not just fox, other crown jewels of the fox -- murdoch empire are also criticizing desantis. this may feel like a sudden about face for the murdochs, but according to axios, the writing has been on the wall for a while. for months, polling has shown that the more voters learn about rhonda scent is, they less they like him. as you might expect, once voters and the fox kingmaker signal their distaste for desantis, it is only a matter of time before donors started getting cold feet to. cnbc reports that the governors stumbles have caused a host of gop billionaires to reconsider their support. one make runner, can't griffin, who late last year said he was fully prepared to back desantis all the way, is now not going to do it. he is still, quote, assessing the field. a campaign can't survive a temporary cash problem. it can survive like in the post. it can even survive a fall at with news media. but all three? maybe florida isn't just where woke goes to die. as desantis loves to say. maybe it is also where the sentences presidential aspirations will go to die. joining me now, alicia garcia, principle of black to the future action fund and shermichael singleton, political consultant and host of the shermichael's show on sirius excessive him. shermichael, breaking just a moment or so ago, nbc news is reporting the desantis campaign fired roughly a dozen staffers on thursday. according to a source familiar with the firings, it was due to cost cutting measures. that source saying the campaign hired to many people too early. how unusual for a campaign at this point in the primary to start firing people? how dire of a situation to you think that is? >> way too early. i've done this three times with three presidential candidate. usually you don't see these types of cuts until after the first few votes have been cast. the fact that desantis is already cutting staff, before the first republican debate, raises questions. one, about how are they spending money, what is the operational cost of a campaign, it makes me wonder if they are running and enormous campaign. two, the overall point. you laid it out quite accurately, michael, in terms of his inability to connect with voters. i think for some odd reason, a couple of months ago, we had a lot of conversations about the sound is being the one. the guy had beat trump. if you look at polls from february, he was ahead of trump. now he is what, 30 didn't behind. it is quite simple. republican voters, they base, they do not want rondo centers. why would you go for ron desantis, a trump lights, when you can get the real deal. i think your point about what -- woke goes to drop die. desantis's bitter offerton into florida and hoping that his catastrophe of a presidential campaign does not hurt whatever of he has in 2028. >> alicia, what's your reaction to this reporting? >> i agree. there was a lot of energy around desantis, thinking that perhaps he could be a better substitute for trump. but i do think what we have seen is that desantis really hasn't shown that he can move the ball a whole lot. quite frankly, desantis, i think, really comes off to voters like the creepy guy in the cafeteria that nobody wants to be around. he hasn't really engaged with voters in such a way for people to understand who he is and what he's about. he has a lot of slogans, many of which you know, of course, are rooted in florida being a place where woke goes to die. but i think what voters actually care about, this is true for republican voters and for democratic voters, republican voters and democratic voters care about the economy. we care about solving real problems for real people. and while campaign slogan might sound nice about being the place where woke goes to die, it still leaves the question of what are you going to do about inflation. what are you going to do about the economy. what are you going to do about making sure i can keep a roof over my head and care for my family. desantis hasn't been in the front of the pack on any of those issues. so when you a line that was the fact that the guy also hasn't been -- doesn't have much charisma, i think we should all pour out a class for him. >> alicia, i want to follow up on that. i think that is very important. something that shermichael and i know very well, given our involvement inside the party. at the end of the day, it is about how you present your case to the american people and how they connect that to the personal problems. what do you think was the final straw for the murdochs, for example? was it his homophobic campaign ad or a particular fumble on the ground in iowa? or this, is at a situation where it is a death by 1000 cuts for him? >> it is hard to say what finally did it for the murdochs. they seem like that would go pretty far. at the end of the day, i think they want a bit on a winning horse. they are just not clear that desantis is. it i think michael is absolutely correct. what bit on trump like when you can bet on trump? if the idea his is that you really want to make sure you finish what you started, and carry people across the finish line, they probably do not see desantis as the person to do that. and they don't see a groundswell of voters rallying around him and saying this is the guy that can really get it done. i think that is basically it. i don't think there is a feeling here that desantis is going to be the one to carry it through. at the end of the day, everybody, i think, is looking for can somebody beat donald trump. and desantis is not the horse that the murdaugh's going to place your bets on. >> it is interesting, shermichael, because before the breaking news this evening about the firing of staff, descendants and emma to donors this week to try to keep them from jumping ship. he outlined his strategy which is to focus on early states, hoping for a strong debate performance what do you make of that game plan, generally? but now in the context of oh, yeah, firing all these people. what is that saying about the strategy overall for desantis? >> i don't buy the astrology. i think it is a bunch of nonsense. let us say trump doesn't decide to debate in august. maybe he does, maybe he doesn't, i don't think it will make a substantial difference in terms of his numeric standing against the others. ron desantis is number two. heat will be on that debate stage with the victim a swathe, eight for the galaxy guy or not, he's a good articulate or and better. he's effective and getting his christmas, of. chris christie, for goodness sake. the guy is one of the best debaters we have seen and enter a long time because of his prosecutorial background. those individuals will focus a little bit on trump, we'll talk a little bit about policy, but they will want to think themselves against the number two, got ron desantis. folks may not remember this, michael, but i would say go to youtube and google be debate with ron desantis and the democrat who almost became governor of florida. he destroyed anchor gillham. rhonda scent is destroyed andrew gillum. he -- >> shermichael, undeveloped real quick. about your take on the rumors chia peyton a class. starting to consolidate around tim scott. earlier this year, it was reporting that the camp pain, trump campaign, it feels that scott may be their biggest threat. is there some truth to that emerging or what do you see happening here? >> i like senator scott. as a conservative who happens to be a black man, i certainly wish he could do better. i wish he did a lot better on issues about race. but i am unconvinced that any of those candidates can do what it takes to surpass donald trump. the base just once trump. as long as he has a solar 35 to 40%, it's almost impossible to beat the guy. >> we've moved from morning in america to take the -- out. they want someone to take the sock is out. that's what the base wants. ahead, kept donald trump can't keep his mouth shot and it might cost him big time, again. but first, jessica layton is here with the headlines. . here>> here are some of the big stories we are watching this out. breaking news and pennsylvania, escaped murder suspect michael burham's beckoned customary. after being on the run, off escaping from jail, police say i talk has been parking on him at a park out around the area and with the homeowner went to see what was going on, he recognized burham and called in the tip. at least four people were killed in a mass shooting in hand,, a. already site is suspect andrew lawnmower is still on the run. police are telling the public not to approach him. they say he is armed and dangerous. and americans suffering under mostly weather today. 90 million people, a third of the country, are facing a heat wave. temperatures are well into the trouble digits and heat index in several states are above 110 degrees. doctors say this level of heat can definitely pose health risks, like burns and hate sickness. i'm jessica layton, more ayman with michael steele coming up after the break. after the break. so you only pay for what you need. that's my boy. ♪ stay off the freeways! only pay for what you need. ♪ liberty. liberty. liberty. liberty. ♪ years ago, we used to just fall asleep with a full face of makeup. don't regret, just reverse. no7's new future renew with a world-first peptide technology no other skincare product has. even those that cost 10 times more. reverse visible signs of skin damage in 4 weeks. >> absolutely. you've already summarized best yourself by saying trump is his own caucus problem because he keeps opening his mouth and getting himself in trouble. this gets really confusing unless you keep in mind there were two different cases. the first case got hung up on appeal. the second case, the one that most of us are familiar with, and up going to trial first. it was filed last year. a verdict came through and when to try out this year. basically, $5 million in favor of e. jean carroll. the other casing was hung up. has been hung up this whole time, based on the question, did trump do this as part of his duties as president and therefore does he have absolute immunity? now, when his got whistle in office, bill barr, bill barr said of course this is part of his duties as president. he has absolute immunity. the judge presiding over the case at the time said, i don't think so. what trump did is what he always done when he gets an adverse ruling in court. he appealed and appealed and appealed. it merrick garland has's head as one of his top two dudes since entering office, get out of defending trump. -- he was found liable for sexual assault and a jury found him guilty to the tune of $5 million and he continues back on that woman. that gives merck garland all that needs to say, look, this is motivated by personal animus. nothing to do with his presidential duties. the important thing is, if doj is out that means trump doesn't have absolute immunity, he will centerline. >> let us talk about that bad-mouthing of aging carroll. his reaction, quite honestly, trump's reaction, to the litter itself. he went on to social media and repeated a lot of defamatory comments he made about her and clementine. look, i can ask the question, does this guy ever know when to keep his mouth shut, does he ever learn? i'm not going to ask you to play psychiatrist here. but what is your sense of how this narrative lee works for or against trump when he is trying to potentially convince a jury or a judge that these things just didn't happen. >> with a jury or adjudge, it seems it is going to be very clear that donald trump understands exactly what he did. really doesn't think he should be held accountable. this is true across the many legal challenges that face him. he really does believe that he is above the law. and juries and coaches are going to be seeing this over the course of the next year or several years, depending on when the rest of these cases wraps up. i think from a broader perspective, i think we also have to remember that donald trump is, you know, very into himself. i'm not as ecologist, i don't want to use a bunch of psychological language to describe him. but he's really obsessed with himself and he really does believe that he is not only above other people, that he should be able to do things that other people maybe shouldn't get away with, but he also doesn't believe that he can do anything wrong and so the way in which he is getting himself into all of this trouble really has to do with the fact that he thinks he is not only above the law, but he also thinks he is above any kind of approach. that he can do nothing wrong and he should be held accountable for that. that is exactly what we are seeing here. >> shermichael, given what both alicia and david have framed here, i don't get what the republican base doesn't get about any of this. and why or how are they still think that in april general election in 2024, these narratives work in the favor to elect donald trump. what do you think the take away is for republican officials, republican candidates, and the republican base when they hear the president repeatedly putting himself in legal jeopardy, because he can't keep his mouth shots? >> i think for the republican officials, particularly in the establishment, they are used to it. they went through four years of donald trump. joe biden has been president for two and a half years. now trump is still the leader of the party. they are used to it. from the candidates perspective, those running against the former president, they will be careful. the last thing they want to be perceived as anti loyal or attacking trump. the base just doesn't quite a lot of room for them. part of the problem is that ron desantis is perceived as anti loyal, if you will. in terms of how this may shape out electorally, i think voters are looking at this and the last election, they say, okay, president biden won by 5 million more popular votes. when you look at the 80,000 votes across four states that made the difference, that is a very close difference in terms of determining who became president. if you look at those metrics, if you look at the 2016, trump and hillary clinton, the numbers are very similar. i predict 2024 will also be similar. this will be emitter of turnout and engagements. from the public republican bases perspective, they believe trump still has a legitimate opportunity and i would probably mathematically agree with that. >> put a pin and that point, folks. the 2020 election was a lot closer than people may realize. david, i want your reaction to the space from slight. quote, although carols allegations and those that trump acted unlawfully in georgia are unrelated, garlands decision in her case that a president can be acting outside of the scope of his official duties while in office strengthens 40 count district attorney fani willis's hand. do you agree? what about the bottom crime family? now we are seeing the republicans kind of grasping at straws, now, with this biden crime family narrative. i think that the biden crime family narrative jumped the shark. i think it was last week where donald trump tried to make joe biden look like a criminal after that story comes out about the cocaine in the white house. he accuses joe biden of being on cocaine, because he's part of this biden crime family. i don't know if you've ever seen anyone uncut can, but that usually don't act the way joe biden acts. they usually don't go to sleep at not o'clock at night. and they told really really fast. what we're seeing now is the republicans saying the biden crime family is making all of the fox news viewers not their heads, but i don't think it is doing anything to sway those voters you are talking about and the last segment. the voters that decide the elections because let's face it, donald trump has been and item for multiple crimes over the last few months. and we are talking more about that than we are about the, quote unquote, violent crime family. >> that is exactly the point. david, in that litter weiss claimed the miss -- whistleblower misunderstood the conversation. he talked about the possibility of requesting status as a special attorney, not as special counsel. can you explain to us the difference? >> that is actually a very fair point. i've run into a few candidates like that over the years. jason, you've got pulling out here, i want your reaction, trump being able to scrape by and when that 2024 election if that third party candidate is on the ticket. democrats and republicans in this town that i've talked to know this is a danger, given trump the opportunity to grip is a can turn this way. >> if we want to take a trip down memory lane to 2016 when joe stein and gary johnson -- it scares me to think that there could be an easy way for donald trump, who like we talked about earlier, has over 30% of the country will just say that he can do no wrong and will vote for him no matter what he does or says per is accused of oregon for. so that is something -- i cannot see this getting off the ground. but i have been wrong a several times before, several of my friends will pointed out. i don't see it getting off the ground. >> it will -- >> i'm going to say no to german shun. >> what was that, francesca? >> i'm being told we are out of time. i just think it's incredible that this party is even, that it a can even come up. that we can have something like this in the first place. anyway, -- >> we'll see, stay tuned. jason and francesca, thank you so much for being with us this evening. i appreciate it. we'll be right back. we'll be right back. our heritage is ingrained in our skin. and even when we metamorphosize into our new evolved form, we carry that spirit with us. because you can take alfa romeo out of italy. but you best believe, you can't take the italy out of an alfa romeo. - this is our premium platinum coverage map and this is consumer cellular's map. - i don't see the difference, do you?
