Service to this network. Ali, what are you watching . Reporter weve got police here, brian. Im going to count on you because you can watch whats going on behind me. We have state police with National Guard over here. Miguel is going to go to the right a little bit on i35 which is completely shutdown to traffic. Look at all the police, look at the lights. Miguel, i watch your back. Take a spin around and show brian what were looking at now. We have a large assembled crowd of vehicles, people who are not moving. People who moved across the bridge and down the other ramp to i35. So weve got what approaches a standoff, but the protesters fully understand now after last night what is likely to happen. And we dont know what the plan is, whether the police are going to move in to disperse the crowd as they did last night with rubber bullets and with tear gas. Were preparing nor that by having masks on. But there is a possibility the alerts went out that the curfew is now in effect and you are liable to be arrested. It was very specific that anybody who breaks curfew will be arrested. So right now weve got people who are riding around, alerting protesters to the idea that there is a likelihood of being arrested. That is what they seem to be preparing for. But i can see from the way its staged, its not like it was the last two nights. Protesters seem poised to try and get out of the way when these police and National Guards members come up. Now, we can see that theyre there. Theyre staged. Given the experience of the last few nights, they dont look like theyre ready to move i didnt tell yet. They dont look in the full state of alert before they go. They have a sessembled here ande curfew has taken place. We saw a good 60 minutes before they encountered police, but there wasnt this position. We had a semi truck driver into a crowd of protesters. The driver of the truck nearly came under attack. Police moved in to remove the driver of that truck and have taken him to the hospital. We dont know what his condition is. We do believe he is being charged with something. Were waiting to get that confirmed. But thats what happened. There was a protest on i35 and thats what brought the police to where they are right now. There is that chopper thats been with us, keeping us company the last few nights, National Guard helicopter, and this is the situation weve got. The curfew is in place. It is now the third night of the curfew. We did see tension the last couple of nights. And now weve got this any moment now, we expect that the National Guard will back up the police and will move in. We dont know, to make arrests or to disperse the crowd, brian. And, ali, lets mention for viewers across the country, as a friend of mine in the twin cities just reminded me, they have shutdown the highways. Try that idea on for size. Think of that idea where ever you live and where ever youre watching us tonight. It is a hugely impactful decision. Reporter youre looking at the highway right now actually. Thats where another group has assembled. You have two separate groups of police and guards, and in the distance, miguel, you can see a Third Assembly of police. So they are this seems to be their staging area. A couple nights ago we were talking to a Police Officer who said one of the difficulties of maintaining curfew when youre using interagency groups like the National Guard, like the state police, and like the local police, is how do you stage it, where do you stage it, particularly when the crowd is mobile. Whatever happened today caused the police and the National Guard to stage in this area. This has been going on a few hours, by the way. Theres been one group here, a larger group was downtown at a protest at u. S. Bank arena. They have converged here. I say for lack of a better term, its a stalemate. This is full of cars and people, and the police are there. No one has given anybody a signal yet that theyre moving. Now, last night as you recall, they didnt give any warning. There was the curfew was in effect. The march began. It became a march, there was no violence in it. Then the police suddenly peeled around the corner cut the crowd off and started firing tear gas and rubber bullets. We dont know if there will be a warning. The first night of the curfew we did get a warning. There were blow horns. Brian, back to you. All right. Ali velshi at a very interesting standoff in the twin cities tonight. Miguel almaguer is out in santa monica where the folks there have been stunned at the level of violence and, in large part, the destruction that took place earlier. Miguel, what are you watching . Reporter brian, the situation here is still very fluid. As a matter of fact, i can tell you police just began firing rubber bullets and sending canisters of tear gas into the air. I apologize for the language of the protesters here. The crowd and the confrontation really got face to face and quite tense for sometime. Again, apologies for the language being used by the protesters here, brian. But through this picture, you might be able to see police are moving forward. Theyve got tear gas, rubber bullets, everything ready here to use at any moment. The situation here continues to unfold here. Im going to have our photographer show you a sneak peek of what we can see right around this corner here. You can see the officers here are armed. They are ready and they are certainly firing rubber bullets here, brian. Were going to back up from the situation here. Its becoming more volatile. We know they are also being hit with bottles, the officers are. Its the reason they are no longer restraining themselves from using force here. But this thats been the situation in santa monica all day long. A short time ago, many businesses were looted just down the block from here. Police were responding to that situation when they were met by another wave of protesters. They clearly have had enough here, brian. You can see them just pulling out of this corner here. They still have their it looks like theyve got tear gas and also rubber bullets ready to use, and they are certainly poised to use that should they need to. The protesters have scattered down multiple areas here, but police seem to be holding their position here for now. I can tell you theres a lot of destruction in the city of santa monica. We have seen several car fires, we have seen buildings that have been destroyed, they have been looted by many of the folks that also gathered out here. So Police Responding to a very difficult situation at the end of a very long day, brian. Miguel, just give us a locator for people who may know santa monica. Whats your nearest thoroughfare and how far are you, for example, from the pch . Were at 5th and colorado which is close to the pch and just about five blocks away from the ocean, the very famous santa monica pier is just down the road from here. The 3rd street promenade is a few blocks away. 5th and colorado where officers are now, the situation has been fluid. Police seem to be holding their position for now. They were moving over the last ten or 15 minutes slowly down the street. They were face to face with protesters who were spitting and yelling in their face. They were using restraint while that was happening, but something simply has unfolded the last 10 or 15 minutes. Thats when officers began pulling their rifles full of tear gas as well as rubber bullets. Thats when we see them taking more of a Tactical Response here. This seems their patience is wearing thin, brian. And one more question for you while we have you. Ive got to ask you about the promenade over on 3rd. That is nothing but store after store after store, all of them Prominent National names, the kind of gleaming beating heart of santa monica retail. They must be very nervous about it. Reporter incredibly nervous, brian. Many of them started boarding up over the last day, day and a half, doing what they could to protect themselves. Weve seen many of the iron gates that have been pulled down. But quite honestly, brian, its done little to deter those looking to loot businesses. Even those businesses that were well fortified were looted anyway this afternoon. Were not quite sure exactly how extensive the damage and the looting is because weve been on the move so much. That is going to be a very serious situation down the road, the 3rd street promenade, the wharf, the pier where so many people gather here. They have all been backdrops for very explosive confrontations between police and protesters. When the smoke clears, well have a better example and better perspective of just how bad that situation is here. For now were happy the scene here seems to be relaxing a bit, though police are clearly ready to move in if they need to. Miguel, thank you so much. And i join everybody watching in wishing you safety and wishing you would duck into an alcove on occasion when we hear the firing. Gadi schwartz is our correspondent who is also on the ground in santa monica and witnessed some of that looting we were talking about earlier. Gadi, where are you and how is it there . B reporter so, miguel is over on the front end of the skirmish line. We are on the back end where that damage is. And you can see they are actually starting to pull back to possibly engage with protesters down the way. So im going to show you some of that horrific damage that weve seen in this area. And as they pull back, this is an area that they came in to protect for firefighters. It was a fire that was going on in the r. E. I. Here. There was a fire going on in this store here. And we actually we just saw something extremely heartbreaking. Were going to approach a Jewelry Store where youre going to see extensive looting. Were going to be a little bit careful and give the people here distance. These are the owners of this Jewelry Store. Theyve had this Jewelry Store in santa monica for over 30 years. This is what has happened to this familyowned business inside. Unfortunately, the woman who owns this store, shes scared because theres still smoke coming out and the firefighters have had to pull out and go somewhere else to continue to fight fires. So she was asking Police Officers, where are the firefighters going . We still need help here. Because you can see there is still smoke coming out. They have taken everything in those glass cases. And its not just this store. Unfortunately, that continues all the way down the street. There are banks this way. They have taken clothing, shoes. And theres a couple of Different Things at play here. Give you a pause for a second as the sirens go by. A lot of people have been boarding up their stores like this. The ones that didnt over here across the street, they have been able to looters have been able to go inside and take everything. Now, there were a bunch of dynamics in play in santa monica and a bunch of different groups of people acting almost independently of one another. There were the protesters, many of those most of those Peaceful Protesters down near the program nmenade and down ne pier. They gather there quite some time. Police were making sure they were facilitating that protest. While that was going on, police were distracted by that, people were coming here in cars and they were actually just getting out of their cars and they were going inside of stores like this and they were clearing out pretty much everything inside. In fact, that nan right there is basically a looter. Hes wearing hes wearing gear with tags on it. And then youve got police that are outside. They really cant do anything about it because they dont have the manpower in this area because theyre concerned with the skirmish lines. This is basically looting on both sides of the street. There are alarms going off inside. There are people inside of that store as well. Then you have the chase bank over here a little while ago there was a fire set in chase bank. There were looters around, they were hitting these different buildings. And then you saw a Police Officer come out with a fire extinguisher, put out the fire over there. But they were unable to do everything anything because there were too many people all around. So its a very dynamic situation. Youve got police just over on the other side of the street, but youve still got traffic coming through here. Its almost as though its like lawlessness on this side of 4th street, and then on that side of 4th street there is a Significant Police presence. But im just going to show you real fast inside of here. This is what the chase bank looks like. We dont know whats been taken, but we know that they were looting the chase bank here as well as pretty much this entire block for about two hours. We were here two hours before police finally started coming in. And we saw Police Actively engage during a moment in which some sort of projectile, i believe it was a can or some bottle hit the backside of that police car, and broke the window and thats when they called in the reinforcements. They spread out. And what youre starting to see now with more and more people come out as those police take off is people basically coming down here, seeing whats still available, going inside of these stores with impunity, taking what they can, and walking back off. Then youve got police on the corner here unable to do anything. And the poor woman thats right there, just going through everything that shes lost, hoping that firefighters come back and put out the fire because smoke is still coming out of her Jewelry Store there. Brian . Also, gadi, were so struck watching this grim tour of an entire city block in santa monica, the casual destruction that doesnt involve breaking things, but the spray paint you walked by near the Jewelry Store that just says save a life, kill a cop. A thought would have been rarely expressed in American Life before these last six days of violence. Now ubiquitous in all of these city streets where were seeing there it is, where were seeing this violence. Reporter yeah, and the promenade is just down the way. So weve seen groups of people going down the promenade. Really at this point the promenade is the only thing weve still seen standing. We havent seen any looting happening on the promenade proper, and so they have Police Officers that are blocking the access to the promenade. But this is whats happening all throughout santa monica on the outskirts. But, yeah, you just mentioned this. This is pretty striking. And a lot of the tagging that weve seen happen is happening within view of Police Officers. So the Police Officers are seeing this happen. Theyre seeing those projectiles come, and its only when the projectiles hit something is when they start engaging from what weve seen. But again, im going to get hit by smoke. Im going to take a walk down here. The promenade, again, is down this way. And then weve got this family here thats trying to lower down their gate. Oh, man. Reporter and theyre unable to do that. So its just its block after block after block. And as you can see, theres a surreal, very quiet almost apocalyptic feel to all the destruction weve seen. Police are not in this area because they have now moved on to engage with some of those looters and those protesters in a different area. Brian, back to you. Unbelievable scene in santa monica, california. Gadi schwartz. Gadi, i join everybody watching and hoping you remain safe along with your crew. Former ambassador andrew young is here with us. He also happens to be former mayor, chairman of the andrew young foundation. Ambassador, i would give anything to change the subject matter and just talk with you on general principles, but here we are. And i note that atlanta, even with a forceful and angry and dynamic young mayor, is seeing its share of problems. One of the cradle of thes Civil Rights Movement. Im curious to hear about where your head and heart are as we come on the air tonight. Well, im in the same state of confusion as everybody else, that we have so much going on. You mentioned it just a minute ago. I never heard of the Boogaloo Boys before. I didnt hear of antifa till last night. When i was working as mayor and leading demonstrations, we had a police force and we had a Student Government related to the various colleges, and we had disciplined organized marches. This is really deliberate chaos. And i think that the gentleman from the fbi, your security guy, has it right that this is not what the Civil Rights Movement has been all about. That this has been infiltrated with people from left and right who really want to destroy america. Now, the students here and the students at everywhere else ive seen have been very well disciplined for the most part. We had mothers and children out leading the marches yesterday afternoon in atlanta. When night fell, there was another whole genre of chaos that was introduced that we handled pretty good. But im afraid that with this coronavirus, which is still under girding all thats going on, that weve got more than we can handle right now. And, mr. Mayor, i imagine that the people who go back six years or so with an organization like black lives matter, the people who have organized daytime protests today in cities big and small, are as angry and mystified as the folks like you and me at seeing others hop along their movement and they have no intention of peaceful protest. They are kind of pilot fish who are joining on to, in the dark of night, create fierce destruction. This is going from a protest movement to something closer to nilism, it seems to me. Well, its an attempt to undercut and to sabotage everything that america stands for, from the left and the right extremes. Im worried that theres not going to be much left in some of these areas when its over. Well, this is a strong country and its a great country. But we have been negligent in addressing the problems of poverty. Weve been negligent in addressing the problems of young people in general. The criminal Justice System is in shambles, and nothing is working right, and were always trying to blame it on someb
