Contact the Judicial Police in paris. Earlier this evening, a Police Operation was under way northeast of paris with police on the ground and overhead helicopters. However, its not entirely clear what role that operation has played in todays manhunt. Police have identified three men as possible suspects in the mas massacre massacre. Two brothers previously mentioned as well as an 18yearold accomplice. The French Wire Service reports the youngest of three suspects has surrendered to police. Joining me now is Pete Williams. Its obviously been a very fluid situation today. Where do things stand right now. The best thing we know is theyre still searching for these two brothers. There season con conflicting reports about what happened to them today. But its quite clear now theyre on the run. Police are engaged in an allout effort to find them. They solicited public help. They describe them as armed and dangerous and asked for anybody in paris that knows where they might be. Anyone in france, anyone in europe who knows where they might be. Now one of the puzzling things about today, chris, is whether two or three people were involved in this attack. Tt french consider said there were three suspect, the two brothers and supposedly the 18yearold who turned himself in tonight. It still isnt clear what role if any the 18yearold played whether hes simply someone the french want to question because they think he may have information or what. So thats something that has to be sorted out. The second thing is that as i say, this has been fluid today. At one point, one of the french officials said that there had been an arrest then retracted it. Earlier today, two u. S. Counterterrorism officials told us that one of the suspects had been killed and that two were in custody. But obviously that information was not right. They said that they couldnt substantiate or confirm. It. And from what we know now, it appears to have been wrong. We know now theres two suspects theyre still looking for. Unclear what the third one, what role if any he played in this. And that will have to work itself out. A couple of other quick things, chris. Obviously the u. S. Is looking that the. They found no indication in looking at their intelligence streams that theres any connection between these two or three and anyone in the u. S. Secondly no indication in the intelligence that theres any warning that was missed. And finally, no plan by the u. S. To raise the terror alert level here because theres no indication of any plot to attack the u. S. All they know this was a oneoff basically aimed at that magazine because of its previous publications about the prophet. Pete williams thank you so much. You bet. Now lets go to bill neely who is live in paris tonight. And bill i imagine a lot of people up early this morning, a lot of sleepless nights in paris particularly for authorities as apparently this manhunt continues. Yes, chris. I mean, this is a city that is shocked at the worst terrorist attack in france in 54 years. A see fearful. There may be a massive man hunt around the country, but there are still two gunmen who, as pete said French Police are describing as armed and dangerous. But this is also a city that was defiant. There were tens of thousands out on the strees tonight to show their sol lairty with the journalists and with the magazine. The other development tonight is the names have been released of all 12 of the victims. And whats really striking is the ages of many of these journalists. The oldest was 80 years old. Another was 76. And he had received highest civilian honor. These were very well known journalists known across the nation. And french journal iss will be paying their respects here today. Tomorrow thursday is a day of national fourning and for three days flags across france will be flown at half staff. The manhunt is on across this nation for the two missing gunmen. Francois hollande calling for that day of mourning. Have there be routine updates from authorities as you would have a situation here in the u. S. , say the Boston Marathon bombing or the active shooting situation, there would be routine press conferences and updates. Will that happen in france . Is that sort of Standard Operating Procedure there . No. Far from it. There hasnt been a sing the French Police News Conference so far. The French Police were very slow to confirm the names of the suspects circulating in french media and on social media for several hour. We dont know yet where there will be a News Conference and a news update from the French Police tomorrow thursday. Francois holland, by contrast the french president who is of course, is at historically low ratings in the poles, he went straight to the newspaper offices, spoke there and then addressed the nation on television tonight. And some of the stuff that people williams was saying earlier, i covered the london bombings ten years ago and the madrid brain domings this killed almost 200 people you have a lot of false leads. Thats certainly whats been happening here. Reports of arrests. Reports that u. S. Counterterrorism officials are saying that people have been arrested based on information they got from paris. A lot of this will clear and in the next few days it should become clear. But the man hunt for the two gunmen we saw but the manhunt is still on across this country. Thousands took to the streets in paris tonight. French officials raised the alert to the highest level following todays attack. The city wide manhunt began immediately after the deadly attack late this morning in paris. At 11 30 a. M. Local time in paris, a van pulled up in front of the local building housing a is asatirical magazine. When the attackers entered the offices, the gunman opened fire indiskrim innocently. They went inside the offices. There are so many dead. One of my colleagues is in a critical condition. The attack lasted just minutes. Meanwhile journalists and neighbors took refuge on the roof. Many scrambled on to rooftops to escape. What fear must have gripped them. Their phones captured the sights and sounds of the killers below. This was the day that militants brought terror to paris. Killed eight people. A guest in the office and a Police Officer. After the attack the gunman fled. Witnesses say the gunman yelled we have avenged the profete mohamed. They exchanged fire with police three times. Video shows a gunman killing an injured policeman who said no no as he was shot at close range. One carefully picked up a shoe before getting into a black car. They continued on to a paris suburb where they abandoned a vehicle and hijacked another car. Troy this eyewitness says the car came stopped here armed men got out on to the pavement and a threatening man had guns and what looked like a bazooka. They left and blocked everything. In total, 12 people are dead 11 are injured, four critical. The magazine had been a target for extremists for years. The publications repeated depictions put the magazine and its staff under the threat of violence for nearly a decade. In 2006 the magazine republished cartoons from a danish newspaper that sparked fury. The following year it published an illustration of muhammad naked. That prompted the french government to close 20 embassies around the globe but none prompted the people to stray from the magazines mission including the editor. Our job is not to defend freedom of speech but without freedom of speech we are dead. We cant live in a country without freedom of speech. I prefer to die than live life. His last cartoon eerily prophetic. The figure of the armed militant replies wait until the end of january before you get a gift from us. Today he was among those killed. Hours after the attack the charlie ebda website. Thought does not reply here. Death threats after he taught about darwin. You have an opportunity today to interview one of the surviving Staff Members of the publication. Who was she . What did she say . The person that i interviewed, chris, was on the staff back when they published the moment cartoons and wrote articles that were in that issue. She talked to me about former colleagues how they had lived under threat and how their lives had never been the same again. She told me about the paper and how it was a paper that defended secularism and challenged all fundamentalisms but was very staunchly antiracist. She called on people around the world to fight against insightment on the internet. But one thing i will never forget is what she told me at the end. They will not make us put down our pens. She talked about speaking with her former colleagues today some of whom were still in shock saying they were going to have an editorial meeting and they were going get an issue out next week or the week after. In terms of the way their lives changed in 2005 2006, they understood the risks. They understood the threats they were under. This must have cast quite a shadow over their lives for years before this day. And journalists and Free Thinkers across the world right now are facing the same risks. There have been Death Threats against a have prominent writer by a group. This simply has to stop. Today was what one al yearian cartoonist called the 9 11 of cartoonists. I saw a cartoon today from one who had been intimidated. Who drew himself with abobscene gesture. There does seem to be defiance among those who have been intimidated. Do you think we will see a backlash in france . I read something today written by a journalist in 1996. She also said one thing is for sure and that is that the pen will not stop. Im afraid of a backlash. Thank you so much. Thank you. Seems like many countries have gotten fairly good at defending against major terrorist attacks but not smaller scale scale ones. Why is that and is it even possible to do so . We will talk about that ahead. Why did a panel of 11 automotive experts. Name the Volkswagen Golf motor trends 2015 car of the year . And my rewards points wont expire. So you can make owning a business even more rewarding. Ink from chase. So you can. One thing you cannot say about the deadly terror attack is no one saw it comes. The offices were under police protection. They were fire bombed after the magazine carried a caricature of the prophet mohammed. And al qaedas branch in yemen instructed followers to kill Stephane Charbonnier in the form of a wanted poster in its online magazine with the headline, yes, we can, a bullet a day keeps the infidel away. Charbonnier was killed in todays attack. There are some slaters, these were attacks involving a small number of assailants using guns and little else whose actions did not require a high level of coordination necessary to pull off a larger scale mass casualty, a bombing like those in london or madrid. America and many other nations have appeared to develop a whole range of techniques to combat such large scale attacks. Something one man or a small group armed with a gun or even just a vehicle, that seemed a different sort of challenge. Joining me now is joint Terrorism Task force assistant special agent in charge don borelli. Lets start with what conclusion we may be able to draw from the individuals involved as they walked through the streets. Right. So this one seems like its a beth of an in betweener. Definitely more training, more sophistication that some of these oneoff lone wolves like we saw in australia and canada but maybe not the level of sophistication that we saw with a 9 11 attack or a london bombing, for example. They did seem to move very methodically, tactically, seemed like they had a good idea of where they were going, may not exactly but probably had done some reconnaissance. I would imagine that there had been reconnaissance done on this building, probably had some information from the inside, and the fact that they were not deterred by police. I mean, most people that are going to attack a soft target will see a police car and say, lets back off and find a different soft target. Right, right. They went ahead and went for it even knowing that they were likely going to engage police activity. And Exchange Fire several times with police, murdered a Police Officer up close in cold blood. What is the investigative trail you follow if youre the french authorities right now . I mean, obviously, you have to find them. Thats the most important thing. Youre going to want to build this whole timeline and this network. Youre going to not just the people involved in this attack but who are their circle of influence, their friends, their families, where did they travel . It appears they did get some training. Where did they get the training, where did they get the weapons, who financed them . Was this their idea, was it somebody elses idea . A lot more questions than answers right now. But these are the pieces of the puzzle that the french with the help of the rest of their allies are going to want to put together to figure out are there more of these out there . Is this one cell of many or is this a one off . We have seen these attacks, shes sort of lone wolf attacks or even in the boston bombing situation, which again the suspects named here, two of them are brothers, of course that was the case in the boston bombing, in which you have essentially disaffected violent militants who plot internally and pull something off, right . Is it the case that essentially the most we can hope for for a sort of Security Apparatus is to prevent large scale mass casualty events but that is an order of magnitude to prevent Something Like this on a soft target with a small number of conspirators if thats what it proves to be . It is very difficult. You strive to have 100 . Of course. But the reality of living in a free society, especially one where guns are available, and you dont even need guns. Canada, one individual who apparently still slight ambiguity, used a car. So whatever. If somebody is really that committed to an act of violence even if its just a one person against, you know, a Police Officer or whatever, then its very, very difficult to stop in a society where, you know, we have freedoms and openness and freedom to express, you know, our opinions and all these type of things. We dont live in a police state. Thats the price we pay. Unfortunately, sometimes is that we cannot find everybody thats committed to an act of violence. There are some reports indicating that well, there are several reports indicating that one of the suspects involved here was previously convicted on charges of attempting to join the insurgency in iraq, that he actually served time. What is your knowledge, the degree to which the Law Enforcement officials have a handle on, you know, people that have connections to networks that might produce such an attack . Again, its very difficult because once somebodys in the system and then they get out, youre looking at, do you follow them 24 hours a day. You cant. Thats very, very resource intensive. Also, presumably theres a judicial argument, someones convicted and they served their time. Exactly. But you try to build a network of intelligence that would be people in the community, people that kind of are your eyes and ears. There are other technical surveillance. Theres a lot of things you can do, again, all within the legal framework. How long can you i mean, i have to say, surprised that they have not been apprehended as of yet when you consider the amount of resources that are being thrown as Something Like this. How long can you imagine plausibly they will be able to stay outside . With todays social media and crowd sourcing the information, i think not all that long. Maybe they are in custody. I guess theres ambiguity about what the official status is. But once the names are released and people say, i know that person or ive seen their pictures. Ive seen their picture. Like we saw in boston, it was very soon after the photos were released that the information was flooding in. And thats likely whats happening right now in france, if in fact if theyre maybe not already in custody. Don borelli, thank you very much for your time.
