queen in an ever changing world, she was stability. and a link to a proud past. as britain's longest reigning monarch, she saw unprecedented change. women's empowerment, the fight for racial equality, and lgbtq rights, technological revolution, the decline of the church of england. she was admired worldwide for her lifelong dedication to his subjects, following a pledge she made by her 21st birthday. >> i declare before you all, that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and to the service of our great imperial family, to which we all belong. >> at the age of 96, her death was not unexpected, but it nonetheless shook the nation to its core. and raised an existential question, can the monarchy survive the passing of the second great elisabeth ian age? ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> i went to balmoral castle within hours of her death. the 50,000 acre retreat in the scottish highlands was the queen's favorite summer residents. hundreds game to pay their respects. this is all still very fresh, very wrong for people. these are some of the first flowers and cards that have been brought here outside of balmoral castle and the queens remains are still here for the transfer to london, for the real pageantry and memorials to be held. and the cards mostly are thank you notes. people are saying, we will remember you. thank you for being a source of think the queen should be remembered as one of the great monarchs of the last thousand years of british history. i think she is up there with the greats. >> princess elizabeth alexandra mary windsor was born on april 21st, 1926. her father who was second in line to the throne, so elizabeth never expected to be queen. but her destiny changed when she was only ten years old. when love collided violently into tradition. in 1936, elizabeth's uncle, king edward the eighth, desperately wanted to marry american socialite, wallace simpson. but she was divorced. which made it the marriage forbidden, since king edward was also the head of the church of england, breaking with tradition and nearly bringing down the monarchy. edward refused to give up his american love. he gave up everything else. abdicating the british throne in december, 1936. >> a few hours ago, i discharged my lawful duty asking and emperor. >> the king was succeeded by his brother, the reluctant duke of york, who assumed the title, king king george the sixth. the new king was elizabeth's father, making her, at just ten, air to the throne. >> the fact that her uncle abdicated, not only of course changed the course of her life, but i think it really changed her opinion of what duty and service is all about. ♪ ♪ ♪ >> princess elizabeth and her younger sister margaret grew up in london. taking on royal duties at an early age, she gave her first broadcast when she was only 14. it was 1940, the early phase of world war ii. her message was to children who have been evacuated from britain into the united states, canada, and other countries, to escape nazi bombardments and atrocities. >> god will care for us and give us victory and beasts. and one piece come, remember it will be for us the grandfather figure for prince charles. they were both, the whole family, of course, was devastated. ♪ ♪ ♪ >> decades later, after peace was forged, the queen would be the first british monarch to visit the republican republic of ireland more than 100 years. she paid her respects to some of the very people who had died fighting the british crown. >> president and friends -- [speaking non-english] >> [applause] >> through the history, our islands have expanded more than their fair share of turbulence and loss. >> and then a powerful act of reconciliation, she shook the hand of martin mcguinness, a former leader of the ira. >> david cameron, the prime minister, said that it was one of the most powerful examples of self diplomacy he'd ever seen. it was one of those, where if you understood the history, and understood that he had been killed by the ira, seeing the queen shake hands with martin mcguinness who had been a member of the terrorist organization, was an astonishing thing to see and made a real difference. she was asked, later on, how had she managed to do it. and in typical understatement, she said, well, he put his hand out. of course i was going to shake it. but it was much more than that. >> queen elizabeth was a skilled diplomat, and comfortable and a role as british advisor, and bridge builder. it was here at buckingham palace where she entertained world leaders and presidents, and no one refused an invitation. but ultimately, it was her own family that put the british monarchy at greatest risk. >> in november 1992, the queen talked openly about her and it's her we bliss, latin for horrible year. >> and 1992, it's not the year on which i should look back with it value to pleasure. in the words of one of my more sympathetic correspondence, it just turned out to be -- >> that year, three of her children's marriages unraveled, and became father for the tabloids. and that created difficulties for the queen, as head of the church of england. then, a fire tore through the queen's beloved windsor castle. it cost $60 million to repair, and the public refused to foot the bill. >> it was almost a metaphor that her life, when windsor castle caught fire at the end of that year, literally, the house of winds are going up in flames. and it was a terrible, terrible time for the queen. it was a time that sort of struck threatened her, unhinged the, not just the happiness, but the security of the house of windsor, the breakdown of the marriage of prince and princess of whales, charles and diana, sort of symbolized a great time for the future. the loss of certainty. >> but perhaps, the queen's greatest challenge game of the publication of andrew morgan's book, diana: her true story. it raked over the love listener want to pay tribute to diana myself. she was an exceptional and gifted human being. in good times and bad, she never lost her capacity to smile and laugh, nor to inspire others with her warmth and kindness. >> in the end, she understood because it was always due to came first. she had to respond to this extraordinary outpouring of grief about princess diana, and that she responded when she responded, she responded perfectly. she was absolutely right and that was very typical of her. she was never complacent about the need to understand the people she ruled. ♪ ♪ ♪ >> but the family troubles continue to the next generation. one of the duke and duchess of sussex married in a blaze of public support in 2018, it was hoped the royal family would reflect a more modern multicultural written. but they broke with a family, and left to start a new life for the night states. >> what was the tipping point that made you decide you had to leave? >> i was desperate. i went to all the places which i thought i should go to, to oxford, we both did, separately, and together. >> so, you left because you are asking for help, and couldn't get it? >> yeah, basically. >> and the windsors didn't always help themselves. the queen's son, prince agile, was engulfed in scandal over his friendship with convicted sex offender, jeffrey epstein. through epstein, prince andrew met virginia giuffre who accused the prince of sexually abusing her when she was 17 years old. he denied all the allegations but bait a large out of court settlement. >> he's disgraced the royal family he must have given her a lot of sleepless nights, in the twilight of her life, which a lot of people find difficult to forgive. >> although the queen faced many challenges and how long reign, she did manage
