of a 9-year-old christina taylor green? >> investigators believe a note found in shooting suspect jared loughner's home it said, die, expletive. his family has broken its silence, they said we wish we could change the heinous events of saturday, we care very deeply about the victims and their families, we have so very sorry for their loss. we're also learning that authorities are saying an officer stopped loughner for running a red light on the morning of the shoot iing. miguel, what do you know about that traffic stop? >> reporter: as we wait for more on the condition of those patients, we have heard from the associated press that loughner was pulled over, apparently for running a red light or some kind of traffic stop. we also learned from the sheriff that jared lee loughner had some kind of confrontation outside his home on saturday. he grabbed a black bag from the car and muttered something to his father and then his father gave chase. a short time later, some six people were killed, another 14 shot. as we wait to hear more information about the victims here, we're also learning more about the suspect. >> we are watching right now on the left-hand side of your screen as dr. peter reeves approaches the podium. >> i feel on gaited to speak up for the community and the city as we continue to get support. it's just amazing how the people of this nation are coming together on this tragedy. the amount of good wishes that are coming across is just absolutely astounding. all of it has been positive and we're very thankful for these good wishes. i also want to take a moment to thank the press. these guys have been so cord natural and heldful in a hard time period so we very much appreciate the privacy that you have given to the patients and their families as well. my question will be very short. the update as we have at the current time period, we still have six patients in the hospital, one patient remains in a critical fashion, two are serious and three are in fair condition. one of the patients got upgraded to serious for a little while because they were on a ventilator or a breathing machine right after we were doing surgery which is very customary and normal. so that's the reason why. the update on the congresswoman at this time period is that it's going as anticipated. again, at this time period, things can go very slowly and progress can occur very rapidly at some particular time and actually can also go in a negative fashion in a downward way as well. i'm happy to state that none of the downward event s have occurred at this time which is kind of what we wanted to have happen at this point. we have decreased the amount of sedation that we're giving her and as a result of that she's becoming more and more spontaneous all the time. other than that, there will be no other additional information that i'm going to be giving you about the congresswoman at this time. i will not be taking questions regarding her status either. at this time period, what i would also like to do is i would like to introduce two family members who are going to make a brief statement. after the brief statement, we'll open it up for a very short period of questions and answers and then we'll conclude at that time period. we have the family members of ronald barber and nancy barber here, jenny douglas is going to talk, we have jason blake and william douglas. if you could just signify who is who, nancy barber, christy blake, jason blake, and wayne douglas. that will help the press quite a bit. with that, gener. >> good morning, my name is nancy douglas, behind me my mom nancy, my husband and my brother-in-law. i have a statement i would like to read on behalf of my family. we will take a few questions after that. we would like to let you all know that my dad ron barber is doing well after his second surgery yesterday morning, he has been very alert since his six-hour surgery on saturday. he was able to see his four grandchildren on monday which gave him great pleasure. we expect him to be released from the icu on thursday. on behalf my dad and the rest of our family, we would like to give our heart felt thanks to the community as a whole for the overwhelming support we have received. specifically we would like to thank all of the unc staff, doctors, nurses and patient care technicians who have been lovingly caring for our dad and our family these past days. the level of care, compassion and professionalism is truly exceptional. we would also like to thank the tucson police department, sheriff's department and fbi. we would like to express our deepest sympathies to the families who lost loved ones on saturday. dad is so deeply saddened by the loss of his friend and fellow staff member gabe zimmerman and long-time friend chief judge john roll. our thoughts and prayers are with the other victims and their families during their recovery. we would also like to express our sincere gratitude to daniel hernandez whose clear thinking and actions in the midst of chaos undoubtedly helped to save congresswoman giffovfforgifford. my dad has worked in the public sector for this community for almost 40 years. he was with the division of developmental disabilities for 34 years, most of that time as the director for southern arizona. he retired in 2006 and began volunteering immediately with gabby's campaign where he was the community outreach director. after her successful election, gabby appointed him as her district director. we knew he worked tirelessly to give a voice for those who often were not heard in his career with the division of developmental disabilities, it was hard to imagine that he could actually work even more in his new career with gabby, but somehow he does. with such a long career of public service in this community he has touched many lives and now we are hearing from many of you who know him well and some of you who just knew of him. he has friends across the political spectrum and like his boss, he just wants to do what is best for the people of our community, that is what drew him to gabby and that is what binds them. throughout this ordeal, dad's singular focus has been on the well-being of gabby and he asks that we all continue to pray for her recovery and her family. >> this is the son of pamela simmons who a staff member as well. >> good morning. i'm going to be reading a brief statement from my mother pam simon. pam simon is a community outreach coordinator for congresswoman giffords, this is in her words. i am incredibly grateful for the outpouring of love and support of my family, friends, co-workers and community. the wounds inflicted are healing, thanks to the amazing care of the doctors and staff here at the university medical center and i would especially like to thank dr. freeze. the deep wounds and needless loss of life, severe injury of co-workers and community members and sadness over this act of violence will take much longer to heal. i am touched and encouraged by the tremendous caring and coming together of the community. i believe in the days and weeks ahead that we will work together to solve challenges and promote healing. i ask for your continued prayers for gabrielle, my congresswoman and my friend and that she has a nu full recovery. she is a leader who's truly needed in this nation. my special thanks to my wonderful husband bruce for his support and for my children for being here throughout this time. thank you. >> okay, we'll open it up for a couple of questions to the barber family. [ inaudible ] >> we are very sad about this tragic event. we are grateful that my dad is alive. but we are very sad about the people who lost their loved ones. >> could you tell us a little more about your father and what he has been saying about congresswoman giffords? >> my dad wants to see her. it will help him to see her. i believe they're going to arrange that. he's just asking about her every day. [ inaudible ] >> you know, he's doing as well as can be expected and day by day, he has to heal and it's going to take a long time to heal. but he really wants to express to the community this wonderful community of tucson his love and his gratitude because we are a wonderful community and we are a family. and we all join together and he's very grateful for that. >> can you talk a little bit about what he remembers about that saturday? >> he remembers it all very clearly. >> has he talked to you about it? >> we can't share that information, but i can tell you he remembers it very clearly. >> could you speak a little bit please about his condition? how is he physically? >> my sister's a nurse, so that's more her -- >> my dad is healing from his wounds remarkably well and we really think that that's because we have so much love and prayer coming our way right now. he had surgery yesterday to close some wounds that were created during his original surgery and he is healing incredibly well. his pain is being managed by his nursing staff and he's expected to make a full recovery. so we're really happy about that. >> the person who operated on his wounds, can we talk to that person. >> we just found out who she is yesterday. and there was an article in today's star about her friend that the star helped me identify her because in the photo in sunday's paper, there's no identification. i'm sure the photographer couldn't get close enough. and so we were able to find out who she was and actually i spoke with her yesterday and anna wallace is here name and ron is very keen to speak with her. and as he was with daniel hernandez, and he is hoping to meet with her in the next day or so. >> thank you. i think this is a testament that these people who are in the hospital after being shot multiple times and healing are always thinking of others and especially the congresswoman. so that concludes this press release at this time. thank you very much for your cooperation. >> and there we're hearing from dr. rhee at university medical center where congresswoman gabrielle giffords is recovering right now. not a lot of update about her condition. but yesterday we did hear from doctors who said they are 101% confident in her survival, but they don't exactly what her future looks like but she is responding well to those commands and she is able to breathe on her own, although keeping an artificial airway to protect her own airway and to protect her from infection. you heard from the wife of john barber who thanked the people who helped him during the shooting, he was injured in the face, the neck and the leg. we continue to follow the fallout from the tragedy in tucson. we're going to take a break here we'll be right back. for a day . enjoy the flight. with listerine® whitening plus restoring rinse. it's the only listerine® that gets teeth two shades whiter and makes tooth enamel two times stronger. get dual-action listerine® whitening rinse. building whiter, stronger teeth. get dual-action listerine® whitening rinse. diabetes testing? >> thanks for having me and first of all i would like to express my deepest sympathies for the family members and the victims and everyone who's been touched here in arizona and nationally by this tragedy. it is continue to be a very uncomfortable situation for our entire state. in arizona we do have ways of encouraging individuals to get the help that they need as they start to experience mental health issues or problems with substance abuse for that matter. our goal is always to try to identify individuals early on as they''re trying to experience the system and help them navigate through the system so they can get the help they need. individuals may also recognize the need they have to get some assistance and they would willingly present for treatment and evaluation, unfortunately, sometimes individuals don't necessarily see the same symptoms that those around them do like their family members, teachers, employers and their friends. >> we're just learning now some of the background from jared loughner, but if you take for instance the neighbor who says she would see him occasionally on his bike or going down the street talking to himself or just sporadically shouting out things to no one in particular. his friends were saying they were getting weirded out by jared, he would end a friendship based on text messages or the fact that the pima community college had to basically expel him from classes, they told him he couldn't come back until he had a mental evaluation and that was a letter that had to be delivered by law enforcement. in any of those steps that you're hearing, do you think that someone should have reached out to health services and said, hey, can we get this guy some help or at least an evaluation? >> certainly what you're describing are some symptoms that i think are much more obvious to the general population and i would suggest to you that there were probably signs and symptoms dating back many years and had we been able to recognize some of these very early warning signs ideally we would have gotten someone like mr. loughner into services long before we started experience some of the signs and symptoms that have been described in the media. >> is there any chance given if there were no specific threats and we haven't heard of any previous threats, would there ever have been an opportunity to have him involuntarily committed? >> yes there is. in arizona, we do have an involuntary commitment evaluation process. it depends on having two people come forward who have observed or heard comments from an individual that would suggest that they are either a danger to themselves, a danger to others or that they are persistently or acutely disabled to the extents that they're not really able to care for themselves in a safe manner. and had two people come forward and initiated that process, it is possible that that petition would have been accepted and mr. loughner would have been taken in for an evaluation. sarah palin on the deadly shooting in arizona, what she says about the criticism of her and the heated political rhetoric. we take you live to portland, maine right now, new england is getting walloped by this winter weather storm, another big round of snow. also ricky gervais back as host of the golden globes. time for the "your business" entrepreneur of the week. lori had an ah-ha moment when she lost her cell phone. they applied for the innovation awards, won and were the hit of the convention. watch "your business" on sunday mornings on msnbc. for three hours a week, i'm a coach. but when i was diagnosed with prostate cancer... i needed a coach. our doctor was great, but with so many tough decisions i felt lost. unitedhealthcare offered us a specially trained rn who helped us weigh and understand all our options. for me cancer was as scary as a fastball is to some of these kids. but my coach had hit that pitch before. turning data into useful answers. we're 78,000 people looking out for 70 million americans. that's health in numbers. unitedhealthcare. if you live in any other state than florida, there is snow j. 69% of the continental united states is covered in snow. this is in portland, maine. flights are grounded at airports in hartford and in boston. this is laguardia airport in new york city, where flights have been cancelled. this is the third snowstorm to hit the u.s. in three weeks. that would be awesome! sure. like that will happen. don't just think about it. spend 10 minutes at lending tree and save up to $272 a month. ♪ [ male announcer ] we touch a lot of things throughout the day. so it's nice that clorox disinfecting products help kill the germs that can live on surfaces for up to 48 hours. ♪ feels sweet when i can touch you ♪ ♪ [ upbeat instrumental ] hours. have contributed to jared loughner's actions on saturday. specifically, i have asked whether the gaps in mental health services allowed him to fall through. congresswoman giffords herself was disturbed by sarah palin's congressional map that placed crosshairs on her district. but now sarah palin is getting death threats. today palin's taking a stand and speaking out and we wanted to show you her public video statement. >> like millions of americans, i learned of the tragic events in arizona on saturday and my heart broke for the innocent victims, no words can fill the hole left by the death of an innocent but we do mourn for victims families as we express our sympathy. i agree with the sentiment shared yesterday at the beautiful catholic mass held in honor of the victims. the mass will hopefully begin a healing process for the families touched by this tragedy and for our country, our exceptional country. so vibrant with ideas and passionate exchange and debate of ideas, it's a light to the rest of the world. congresswoman giffords and her constituents were exercising their right to exchange ideas that day to celebrate our republic's core values and peacefully assemble to petition our government. it's inexcusable and incomprehensible why a single evil man took the lives of peaceful citizens that day. there's a bittersweet irony that the strength of the american spirit shines brightest in times of tragedy. we saw that in arizona. we saw the tenacity of those clinging to life, the come papan of those who kept the victims alive and the heroism of those who overpowered a deranged gunman. like many, i have spent the last few days thinking about the tragedy and praying for guidance. i listened puz -- now with sadness to the irresponsible statements from people attempting to apportion blame for this terrible event. president reagan said we must reject the idea that every time a law is broken society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. it is time to restore the american precept that each individual is accountable for his actions. acts of monstrous criminality stand on their own. they begin and end with the criminals who commit them, not collectively with all the citizens of a state, not with those who listen to talk radio, not with maps of swing districts used by both sides of the aisle, not with the law abiding citizens who respectfully exercised their first amendment rights at campaign rallies and not with those who proudly voted in the last election. the last election was all about taking responsibility for our country's future. now president obama and i may not agree on everything, but i know he would join me in affirming the health of our democratic process. two years ago his party was victorious, last november, the other party won. in both elections, the will of the american people was heard and a peaceful transition of power proved yet again the enduring strength of that you are republic. vigorous and spirited public debates during elections are among our most cherished traditions. and after the election, we shake hands and we get back to work and often both sides find common ground back in d.c. and elsewhere. if you don't like a person's vision for the country, you're free to debate that vision. if you don't like their ideas, you're free to propose better ideas. but especially within hours of a tragedy unfolding, journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood liable that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence they purport to condemn, that is reprehensible. there are those who claim political rhetoric is to blame for the despicable act of this deranged apparently apolitical criminal and they claim political debate has somehow got on more heated just recently. but when was it less heated? back in those calm days when political figures literally settled their differences with duelling pistols? in an ideal world, all discourse would be civil and all disagreements cordial, but our founding fathers knew they weren't designing the system for perfect men and women. if men and women were angels, there would be no need for government. our founders genius was to design a system that help settle the inevitable conflicts caused by our imperfect passions in civil ways. so we must condemn violence if our republic is to endure. as i said while come paining for others last march in arizona during a very heated primary race, i said we know violence isn't the answer when we take up our arms, we're talking about our vote. yes, our debates are full of passion. but we settle our political differences respectfully at the ballot box. as we did just two months ago and as our republic enables us to do again in the next election and the next. that's who we are as americans and how we were meant to be. public discourse and debate isn't a sign of crisis, but of our enduring strength. it is part of why america is exceptional. no one should be deterred from speaking up and speaking out in peaceful dissent. and we certainly must not be deterred by those who embrace evil and call it good and we will not be stopped from celebrating the greatness of our country and our foundational freedoms by those who mock its greatness by being intolerant of differing opinion and seeking to muzzle dissent with shrill cries of imagined insults. just days before she was shot, congresswoman giffords read the first amendment on the floor of the house and it was a beautiful moment. and more than simply symbolic as some claim to have our constitution read by our congress. i am confident she knew that reading our sacred charter of liberty was more than just symbolic, but less than a week after congresswoman giffords reaffirmed our protected freedoms, another congressman said he would criminalize speech that he found offensive. it is in the hours when that you are values are challenged that we must remain resolved to protect those values. recall how the events of 911 challenged our values and we had to fight the tendency to trade our freedoms for perceived security. and so it is today. let us honor those precious lives cut short in tucson by praying for them and their families and by cherishing their memories. let us pray for the full recovery of the wounded and let us pray for our country. in times like these, we need god's guidance and the peace he provides. we need strength to not let the random acts of a criminal turn us against ourselves or weaken our solid foundation. or provide a pretext to stifle debate. america must be stronger than the evil we saw displayed last week. we are better than the mindless finger pointing we endured in the wake of the tragedy. we will come out of this stronger and more united in our desire to peacefully engage in the great debates of our time, to respectfully embrace our differences in a positive manner and to unite in the knowledge that though our ideas may be different, we must all strive for a better future for our country. yes, may god bless america. >> sarah palin's perspective on the tragic shooting in tucson saturday. andrea mitchell will talk with democratic strategist bomb slum and
