philadelphia. look at this amazing sight, this is the benjamin franklin parkway, it is a giant stage that will also be an alter for sunday's mass. the festival of the families, the big event tonight which you will actually see here live will be performed here, and the pope is going to be on stage with all of these phenomenal performers from andre bocelli to aretha franklin and then overnight stage set is going to be reset for the mass tomorrow afternoon. >> now when we were arriving here at the broadcast center this morning on our media bus and that was at 5:00 this morning and people were staking out their position as long ben franklin parkway to get a glimpse of the holy father. >> i had an opportunity to talk to quite a few people who are around this broadcast area right on the edge of the parkway here, and they have come from different places. i have talk to one couple from in mexico, and another group of woman here from louisiana a they had all participated in the world meeting of families and they say they just needed to come to philadelphia primarily because pope francis will be in philadelphia. >> it is an amazing day, sunnies supposed to be out later on, nice cool breeze right now. we'd like to turn over to justin drabick live at the embassy suites along ben franklin parkway. justin, what kind of forecast are we looking forward to. >> i think we will luck out especially today even through the entire weekend those rain chances are diminishing but keep in mind you may want to have that puncho handy in case tomorrow. we are 28 floors looking up down through the parkway. we have filtered sunshine and seeing blue skies. people outside on the parkway they are starting to line up on the ben franklin parkway as well. it is a nice saturday. temperatures cool right now but still very comfortable. check out storm scan three, not a whole lot going on here across the delaware valley, just some cloud, all the of the rain is to the south but check out those temperatures today, hour by hour here's how things will be breaking up. right the now we are generally looking at some 50's and 60's across the region right now but throughout the morning into the afternoon things should be looking okay. here is your papal visit the forecast as we head today, really no problems, we will see mostly cloudy skies, cool and breezy at times, temperatures in the 60's this morning. we will climb up in the mid 70's as we head through sunday mostly cloudy sky, still school and breezy day we will talk about a chance for a shower later on during the day but temperature wise same story, a little bit below average in the the low to mid 50's. breaking down your sat the day it looks g we are talking about temps in the 60's by 10:00 o'clock or so, mostly cloudy skies in the afternoon we will trend, around 73 by 1:00. 4:00 o'clock mid 70's and then by later this evening we are talking about 70 degrees. all and all i think this weekend will be okay. comfortable. temperatures feeling like fall and that sky is looking like good shape right now. come on out to the parkway and see is what happening and enjoy festivities this morning and this afternoon. we are live atop ben franklin parkway new back to you guys. >> justin, thanks very much. they have called this the francis festival ground. i guess as we anticipate rest of the day with people coming and going we will get a sense of the festival a atmosphere. >> we have angelic music in the background accompanying our newscast. that brings us to the pope again, leaving jfk shortly. he will be touching down here in philadelphia around 9:30 in the morning. people are gathering at philadelphia international airport and that is where "eyewitness news" reporter justin finch is live. >> hey justin how are you doing this morning. >> jim, pat, good morning. it is anticipation that is certainly building here. there is more than just media and a security here at phl. we have onlookers and well connect people who got themselves access to this historic moment. i will step out and show you, your eyes are trained on the staircase where pope francis will disembark about 9:45 this morning. the planes should land, around 9:30 here the atlantic aviation. he is a arriving from new york city have after a whirlwind two days and when he descend that staircase, he will be greet by esteemed dignitaries, including governor tom wolf and his wife francis, mayor michael nutter and his wife lease, world meeting of families staff, arch wish on charles chaput, retired philadelphia police officer richard bowes and his family. he, of course, was wounded in the line of duty in september 2008. his partner was killed. bowes took down the man took his partner's life but and his family will present the pontiff with the mount laurel, the state's flower, and we are told that plant will be taken back to the vatican and planted in the papal garden. also here on the sidelines we will show you now the band over there, bishop shanahan band, they have been getting ready all morning for the pope. we are told a 25 minute set is coming our way in just more than an hour's time and behind them those bystanders who say they are looking forward to seeing pope francis, take his steps from that plane, and they say, young and old, he is someone who inspired just by being who he is, lets take a listen. >> his connection to people, the things that he remind us are important about why we're here and what god has in plan for us. >> he is trying to show a good example for us and i want to try to practice that good example and give to others. >> he wants people to be kind, and honest to other people. >> reporter: such wise word from young people coming from that crew over there. they, of course have a great vantage point. we have heard over and over again a hundred feet or so they are from the pope and this historic moment here in philadelphia a. and 9:45 this morning we are looking for the pope to walk down those stairs. he will be greeted soon after and then that motorcade will get him back to center city at saints peter and paul. jim and pat, back over to you, very, very excited, very, very chilly but it means nothing in the wake of this huge moment for our city and here today, back over to you. >> thanks, justin. i think holy father will give us an extremely warm embrace when he arrives here in philadelphia. i don't know whether you had an opportunity to see that carpet rolled up, we will tell but that. it is a red, gold carpet that was hand woven, here in langhorne, bucks county by the murrow family, langhorne corporate, 9 feet wide, 75 feet long, special gift for the holy father. >> there are a lot of things we will talk about that came from the delaware valley, whether where he is sleeping, his sleeping arrangements and things like that tonight. >> the plane is about to take off from jfk international airport. flight is not a long flight only a 15 minute flight for regular people it would be a little bit longer but he has probably got clearance. >> i think he does. this man has clearance but only from air traffic control but from another experience. i don't think we have anything to worry about where this is concerned. it is fun too is they have, there is a tradition to call these planes shepherd one. it is not officially that it is an american airlines plane. >> it is a boeing triple seven jet, 200 series jet, the crew was hand select, across the fleet of american airlines, and i did speak with their pr folks yesterday. there haven't been any modifications pennsylvania made to the plane but he is using this plane throughout the entire trip here in the united states. this plane will also take him back to rome, after his trip is over with. the crew is selected from all of the american basis across the country. the flight attendants on word have different scarves and ties as part of their uniforms. they have change them over to the papal colors white and yellow replacing red, white and blue of the american team his crew met in dallas on wednesday, on thursday, they flew to andrews air force base, where the pope's journey, you had journey began and same crew follows him pilot, flight attendants will be with him throughout his entire trip here as well as back to europe. >> isn't that great, the pope is on his way to philadelphia, in just a moment, it will be wheels up, you are watching this live, what an extraordinary moment for all of us, my goodness. >> there he goes. >> there he is, on his way to philadelphia. you know, i have to apologize in advance to everybody if they are listening to me because every so often i just very well may choke up. this is a great moment. >> it is, i just tweeted out a photo i took of john paul the second in 1979 when i was 13 years old on broadway,. >> that is beautiful, how about that. >> i understand we need tissues here. >> i remember how significant it was. i watched him on brought way going down to new york city. my mom and dad let a 13 year-old go into manhattan by myself, i don't know what they were thinking, but that photo i have of john paul, ii i cherish it for year. that was my first experience. fortunately this weekend i have a much better seat. >> my first experience with john paul the second was this 1987 when he came to you had from a ten city tour. i was with him in miami, los angeles, and san francisco and had a great opportunity to cover him not only in the you had but also, at the the the vatican, and then pope bendik when he came in 08 as well as when pope bendik resigned. i was not in st. peters square when francis was elected but watching it from here in philadelphia and there was an extraordinary moment, when he stood before the crowd, saying good evening to the brothers and sisters of the world, of the not only to the people there in the the square but in the entire world, and then he asked people to pray for him: this was an extraordinary moment. i knew at that point and so many others, knew that was going to be the the peak, the the one moment that telegraphed this holy father was going to be different. we have seen that happen. we will talk about that throughout the day in our coverage. >> you know what while he is flying here people are also trying to get here from the surrounding areas. road have been closed for past few days, last night, highways starting to shut down, i walked from my home, this morning in olde city and i had to navigate all of the security checkpoints. we really should give people an idea what they are expecting if they are out in the lanes coming in the city. >> so meisha johnson is live for us in the studio, she's on duty this morning to keep everybody informed what the situation is like with traffic. normally meisha there would be very busy traffic on the schuylkill expressway and at the exits to i-95, it is different today. >> it is, and pat, turf say i got goose bumps when you got emotional seeing that airplane take off. it is such a beautiful moment. i know you can feel energy. i can feel it inside, inside the studio, it is so great. so exciting. here's a look at ben franklin bridge. not every day you take a look at ben franklin bridge and see it completely closed down, nice, quiet. when we zoom in and look closer you can see pedestrians walking across this bridge. no vehicles on the ben franklin bridge but on the tacony palmyra bridge you can have have vehicles there you just can't walk over there. completely flip flopped from this bridge to the other. another spot where we are keeping an eye on is schuylkill eastbound at gulph mills. you can see far left lane is closed, off to the blue route, and where it is opened, rather closing you down to one lane and up at the blue route you will get closed off. reason this is in place is to kind of push all of the moving traffic into one lane and then as i said close at blue route westbound schuylkill from i-95 to route one is also closed. we are getting used to these closures. they have been talk about for quite sometime. here's the ramp from i-95 south to the vine is closed, also closed broad street, washington avenue and callowhill. those are all closed as well. i will show you a map of another area that is closed, something we have been talking about all weekend long. this is one area city avenue closure lancaster avenue to belmont avenue toe day 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and sunday 7:00 a.m. to late afternoon. that closure is also in place. let me back out of the way so you can check out this transit list this is septa information. regional rail fewer running stations make note of. that bus service. detours and suspensions. check your schedules. route 15 is shuttle busing, route ten is completely suspended for those navigating in and out of the area using route ten just know that is completely suspended. for those in new jersey here's information for you as well, access link completely suspended. bus service suspended. patco is cross honoring new jersey tickets for those who need to know that, and new jersey river line is limited. special passes are needed. when i look over on all of our camera shots i can tell you it is looking very, very quiet. it is like everybody is joining us and watching is what happening live with the pope on his way here to philadelphia, taking a peak what is going on because things are quiet outside of those lane closures. i will have more of those coming up in 15 minutes. erika, back over to you. we will take it, meisha, thanks very much. we heard justin finch the atlantic aviation talking about different people who will be on the tarmac when the holy father land. so when he steps on to the tarmac welcoming him will be a family who turned to god at a very tragic time in their life. >> seven years ago the the dad former police officer richard bowes nearly lost his life. bowes was critically wounded in a hoot out that left his partner sergeant pat mcdone willal dead. bowes, his wife and three children were surprise when world meeting of family today will greet the holy father. they say the honor is a little bit unbelievable. >> how to you greet the pope? we didn't know. he is just different from normal popes. you don't know what to expect. >> i will just ask him to pray for everyone who is sick and suffering because i'm not sick and suffering. >> the the family would like pope francis to bless the the peace makers as they call them the men and women who serve in uniform and risk their lives every day. you can't help but think about that at the moment in new york when he met with the families of the 9/11 victims, i was so moved by that moment. he was as well. i thought it was so poetic he talk about the flowing the water, at the memorial at 9/11 memorial and he said it is a match to the amount of the tears that has actually fallen. i thought that was very beautiful. again, sorry for a little tear up today but as we listen to that, yes. >> we will get a sense of emotional. >> very emotional day. anytime you speak with people who have come to an event like this whether it is here in the united states or elsewhere they all say there is an unusual energy in the air. i think we will feel it. >> i think we are too. >> so there are many pictures circulating right now. >> are you talking about mine, i have been tweeting out all morning long. people are sick of maine already in the broadcast booth. >> they are retweeting. >> the pope has become a selfie pope. >> yes. >> the the selfie pope. >> folks have been taken photos all week long in preparation for pope's visit. we want to see your pope photos when you post them object social media be sure to use the hashtag cbs philly pope and we may use them on tv. >> lets take another look, this is atlantic aviation we are waiting for the holy father to come here and land here in philadelphia a you can see the staircase is in place, i necessity there is a particular name for that what is that called. >> staircase. >> okay. >> in my old flight attendant days those were called the jet stairs. >> there they are the jet stairs. >> the carpet is ready, for sure. >> it looks like some people there are gathered to be able to greet him. there is really wonderful people that will be there. i think governor wolf is going to be there, yeah. >> we know shanahan high school bandies preparing earlier. we have heard about this. we did a -- it is interesting, our stage manager dianne said that is stairway to heaven here. that is what we should rename it. >> just this one, stairway to heaven. you can see on your screen you can see bowes family whom we just talk about. they must be beyond themselves. you know, everybody, everybody who was on into dislocation here the atlantic aviation needed to be there, very early today. >> i met the family the other day for our station for an interview and they are just delightful. their kid eyes were wide opened because they had never been in the tv station before. i can just imagine, imagine them at this age, the the stories they will be a able to tell. >> imagine pictures they will be a able to take. is it possible that is the holy father's plane. >> no, i do not think so. >> he would really get there quick. >> would i like to fly with him. i don't think he has to get through regular tsa security either. >> as i said, unless he is really fueled by holy spirit. >> you know he carries his own luggage. >> i do know that and from what i understand he has his prayer book that priest uses, he carries a razor and he carries his restry. >> one other thing. >> what is the other thing. >> a book to read. >> i would like to know is that on the new york times best seller list. would i love to know what pope francis read in the free time. he does not watch television. >> not since 198o he pledged to the virgin marry, he would not turn on his tv ever again. he has just a great love for an argentina sock are team but he talks to his guards, who are with the swiss guard who protect him he talks to them to find out what is going on with his team. >> it is also very interesting, because a pope in this age that doesn't watch tv but that is how his message get across between television and social media. all of his tweets i understand are approved by him. he is really hip and happening. >> he is. he has about 20 million volumers, jim, a few more than you and i have. >> just a few. >> we speak in only english and his tweets are presented in nine different languages. really very beautiful. so you will be hearing different sound behind us throughout the course of the day as we are broadcasting from this location as everybody is getting ready for is what coming up later today. >> i thought they were going to ask me to go out there and sing. i hear clicker. i don't know what that was. >> you know what i think it is, it is an electric stapler, to stapel down some things. >> what do they stapel. >> lets go back to atlantic aviation, this is wonderful family the bowes family who are prepared, doesn't it look beautiful. can you imagine what that was like this morning when mom and dad got up, and said, it was certainly before today light, so you have your outfit, lined up,. >> practice. >> what we will say, let's do it again. can you you imagine that car ride from their home to the tarmac right here next to the stairway to heaven. >> just amazing. >> again, the plane that is bringing pope francis here to philadelphia, the triple seven jet, it is, again, nothing has been change with the plane. he is pretty much sitting in first class, he has a row to himself when he travels. he travels with about 30 people from the vatican, and some are religious but there are a a number of lay people that work at the vatican and press office and traveling with approximately 75 media. interesting thing that i find is when you start this type of a trip with the pope, you stay with him for the entire journey. so you start in rome, went to cuba, went to washington, new york, philadelphia and even if you are a local reporter here you still have to go back to rome, otherwise you don't fly with the pope in the future. >> there is in fact only one philadelphia reporter on that plane and that is david o'reilly long time religion writer of the philadelphia inquirer. we will see if i can catch up with him later in the day and hear what his experience is like. he brought along a zu ch etto, it is the white hat that the pope wears, and it is something he actually brought one with him and traded it off with the pope with the one that the pope was wearing. pope put it on his head for two seconds. he has it in a plastic bag. the a as we are looking at a screen we see arch bishop charles chaput, archbishop of philadelphia, who has been beyond instrumental in pulling all of this together. as people in the archdiocese press office call him, the boss, he has been the boss and organizing this entire event, the world meeting of families, the reason why the pope is here in philadelphia is because of the world meeting of families. archbishop chaput was the one who agreed when he was asked by pope bendik to come to have have the world meeting of families in philadelphia, he is the one who received that request, and then he is the the one who says, of course, holy father. at the time when i touch to archbishop chaput he was in the quite sure how he woman age all of it because first thing he worried about jim, was money, money being raise todd do all this and archdiocese is in a position where it doesn't have the amount of money that it thought it did the at one point but everything has come together and we will talk more about that too. so we have our extended coverage then that is continuing today, through tonight, through tomorrow, the pope in philadelphia, we hope you will stay with us because this is the place you will not be here, this is where you want to be to watch it all. we will be back after this. >> stay tune. welcome back, i'm jim donovan with pat ciarrocchi here on the end of the ben franklin parkway where people air sem blink for the visit of pope francis to philadelphia, and an amazing scene a along the road leading from the basilica up here to the art museum. we are until the middle of all of it. >> we are in the middle of all of it. as we look out we will see 7,000 chairs that are set up. this is a picture from outside basilica, these are priests walking in very casual, joining in the procession. it is usually much more somber then this but they are very excited the holy father is coming there. this is first place where he will pray when he comes to philadelphia, cathedral of saints peter and paul. as you saw priests walking by, they walk by this grotto which was created, a grotto to mary the the virgin mother, jesus's mother and very special devotion that the holy father has to this particular version of the blessed virgin. you can see these strips of papers. those strips of paper and fabric are petitions, from more than 40,000 people who have come here asking for blessings, and asking for mary to help them undue the knotts and struggles in their life. this has been a powerful, initiative, and led biopsies ter marry skullion of project home and all of the wonderful people. nobody knew that this would be as powerful of a place as it would be, and it has been, people have come here, in tears, and in gratitude, and some cases joyous and some cases of great pain but whole idea to offer to mary your petition so she could untie that knot and make your life smoother. >> it is interesting, the other day when i was in that area when it was first set up people didn't know what it was all about. but when they got the idea suddenly they jumped on board very quickly, and, you know, a few people that i know, personally that have been over there said it was very moving because it was cathartic to write that down. >> you can see also i find this very interesting, again, usually priests are extremely solemn walking down in procession to the cathedral. they have their cameras, cell phones, they are eager to be able to see the the moment again when holy father walks through the door of the cathedral and really connects with the the priests and the sisters and much of the archdiocese. the it really is very beautiful. >> you can hear cheers people lined up along the parkway there. that was a busy sight even this morning at 5:00 a.m. there were quite a number of trucks in the area that were dropping off last minute supplies to people and people have already been staking out that area for quite sometime. >> it is great to be able to see all of this. we also will be able to broadcast to you -- we will also be able to broadcast to you which will be great we will actual show you the the mass, we will be -- you will be able to sit at home ape participate if you'd like in this first mass, and, we will have a wonderful guest who will help set this all up ace that is bishop david o'connell of the diocese of trenton and he will be here in just a a few moments. >> the priests are getting in the action too. who is on vine, >> holy father is on shepherd one on his plane. it will be landing we would imagine within the the next few minutes or so and we will be able to take you back to that a arrival ceremony as well. >> the the priests lined up in the same vestmen t eventually celebrating the mass along with the pope. 600 people will be inside the cathedral. you will notice for very first time if you have ever watched the mass broadcast from the -- broadcast mass from the cathedral you will notice that the cameras are very, very, very clear this time because they have justin stalled eight new hd cameras. so here we have. >> back in philadelphia. >> yes, we have bishop macintyre, who has been instrumental on the the committee for the world meeting of families and for this papal visit. >> is that commissioner ramsey. >> yes. >> i could not tell from behind his head there, it kind of looked like the commissioner. the commissioner is also catholic and he has been very stage filled over years. i have had sidebar conversations with him about his faith. the he says it sustains him especially in light of all that is so difficult to deal with in the job he has as police commissioner of philadelphia. >> you are also going to see the the key committee members. so, the remarkable president, and ceo of this, there we have governor tom wolf who was with us just a few moment ago at this broadcast site. hear from him as well. we had an opportunity to chat with him. donna ferrell, she's the executive director of the world meeting of families. i cannot tell you how this team, how they explained it to us. they have worked together, just tirelessly, and with great joy for this really big moment. it is wonderful. they are all there here to greet the holy father. it could not be better then this, jim. >> this is very choreographed. people could not just wander to the airport, but even when they get to the cathedral later on, everyone has assigned spots. >> yes. >> there is mayor nutter, michael nutter. >> yes. >> and again, what was really fabulous and we were in rome at the vatican the first time, that went to ask the holy father how delegation went. we? delegation asked to come to philadelphia, mayor nutter was right behind archbishop chaput with the request, at the time, mayor nutter, who is a graduate of st. joes prep was a actually holding and presenting to the holy father a jersey from st. joes prep, with the pope's name on the back of it. there are a lot of young guys who are from other jesuit schools who have decided to camp out at st. joes prep and they are here to celebrate this great moment. when this jesuit priest, and we will get greater explanation of that from bishop o'connell when he joins news a moment or two but this jesuit holy father comes here to philadelphia. they feel a great connection. he is a priest have of an order, as opposed to a diocese priest which would be the priest who would be ordained through a seminary like saint charles seminary. >> jesuit, when you are a jesuit priest it takes longer, much longer process, then i think people understand. interesting thing about pope francis when you mentioned the the high school kid this pope seems to really have connect with young people. much more than i believe pope bendik for instance has. >> i think that is true. we have called pope bendik a more intellectual pope, and also very shy. so it was harder for him to have that same kind of freedom, but the the same story goes and we will get more of this from bishop o'connell when he talks to us that this holy father had a moment of grace, he was not always as what we see. he was much more in some cases, some people call him melon collie but we see what occurred to him once he accepted this role, as pope for the leader of the roman catholic world worldwide and he felt this closeness to god and he was filled with that and felt much more free to be able to chart his own course, if you will, and to connect. >> i should point out for those of you who may not be close to the television set we are streaming live on cbs philly.com. there goes the music again. maybe that means pope license landing any second now but again, if you are taking photos and in the area be sure to use the hashtag cbs philly pope so we can take a look as well. >> we also see, we have one of the clerics with the holy father, it is archbishop vincent paleo who is president of the pontificate council for family. we are looking at bob, and donna ferrell who have led this way on the secular side to pull together world meeting of families and this papal visit. >> the interesting thing about going back to the folks that are bringing pope francis here to philadelphia today, when the the pope leaves rome, he normally travels on air allalia on a chartered jet because vatican state is rome within distance. a a lot of those crews are familiar with these papal trips. they are used to traveling with the pope. where as folks on american has only charters with a popes i believe seven times in recent years. first pope came here to the united states, and it is very interesting because the dynamic is different. the excitement on board the plane that will be a arriving here, there is mike from the st. patrick's day parade, taking photos there in the bottom corner of the screen. >> a very enthusiastic cat will lick in philadelphia. >> yes. >> we see a lot of familiar faces here, from our st. patrick's day parade. >> so again, these men, who are walking in, i think this is accurate, with the one stall off to the side, they are deacons, or they are other priests, and we will get clarification on that. vest meant. we have clerics of philadelphia and archdiocese and region coming to pray with him for the first time. 1600 of them. it is in the just priests. we have seen this priests coming in, there are a lot of sisters, a lot of religions inside the cathedral and they are, beyond excited. the holy father is coming into them he should be a arriving very soon. we're not talking, and, we're... they are the the deacons, yes, the the deacons are arriving here. >> and there is a group of deacons, all being call chaplains to the holy father and they will be part of the mass tomorrow, here at ben franklin parkway. >> we are broadcasting here from the middle of where all of the axis taking place. we are thrilled to be able to have that opportunity to do that. you can see, the the gentlemen in the glasses, in the sunglasses, that man is fred stein, and fred has been a a key coordinator for many of the different aspects of this trip. what he is doing, you see he has his list in the hand and lining up the people who will meet holy father and will shake hands. he is kind of the master of ceremonies, if you will, behind the scenes, telling everyone where it is that they need to be so this goes off without a hitch. as jim mentioned earlier there is a lot of this that is orchestrated. virtually everything is orchestrated in one way or the other. only thing that is in the orchestrated would be spontaneous moments that the holy father can create as he is moving along his path. he will stop, pick up a child, he will talk to someone in the wheelchair. he will embrace someone who is elderly because that is just what it is that he is all about. he says that he feels better when he is connecting, one on one with individuals, then he is dealing with a large group. he sees the individual and i think that you can see that in his face. you can see a cleric, that is father, donovan, he is not related to you from what i understand but he has been very involved as liaison from philadelphia at the the vatican to be able to coordinate this whole event. you can see archbishop palea standing off to the side. right now next to father donovan. and archbishop chaput. this is a very special moment for all of them as they are anticipating this moment that they have worked two and a half years to pull together. way before we knew that this was even a real possibility with the holy father coming here. they were beginning, they are beginning the preparations, they were beginning the preparation to have him come to philadelphia. now, it is really migrate pleasure to introduce to our audience here, bishop david o'connell, bishop of the diocese of trenton. bishop o'connell has been kind enough to join us throughout this broadcast and today and tomorrow bishop, you have been such a great friend to me, give me great background to all this and we welcome you to our broadcast today. >> thanks, good morning, good to be here. >> give us a sense of your excitement, bishop as we are awaiting the holy father to land here in philadelphia. >> the whole week has been thrilling, i'm sure with all of our viewers, faithful, people of goodwill, following the holy father's trip, you know, this is unprecedented, the excitement, in our country to welcome the the holy father, to me personally a beautiful occasion. i had the opportunity on wednesday, to be part of the group of bishops who gathered at saint matthews cathedral in washington d.c. to listen to the holy father, welcome and pray with him and it was an extraordinary occasion. >> bishop, give me a sense what that was like, i know extraordinary but with his message, what was your thought, what was that as one of his bishops. >> he spoke in italian, and, that is not one of my, languages so i had to listen to it over speakers. i was just very struck. this is a pope who not only speaks with text, but he speaks with gesture and tone. you have got to take it all into get a true sense of what it is that he is trying to communicate. he spoke about encounter, he spoke about dialogue and importance of the church, not excluding anyone, from the embrace. that is how he started that conversation. he immediately put people at ease and communicated that grandfatherly sense of warmth and love for us. it was just a beautiful feeling. he may be one to his next sentence, his next word and he spoke very beautifully and poignantly to us a as his bishops. it looks like the pope. >> the the pilot is from the diocese of trenton, tom murray, a local parish. >> how wonderful is that. >> here we have him, he has landed, his plane shepherd one is on the ground the atlantic aviation and the excitement, if it hasn't, you know, reached just an incredible height, yes, it is about to. you can see the the the plane turning, and within moments we are going to see the the man dressed in white. >> yes, beautiful. >> the pilots will open up cockpit windows and put the the papal flag out. folks at american said that was most difficult part receipt tremendous fitting this plane how to put in flag extensions inside the cockpit. there goes the flags. i just tweeted out a photo, united states flags and papal flag. because someone asked how did the the flags fly in the air when the plane is flying. no, you pay close attention to the end of the runway when they pull off. when the plane stops at the the jet stairs are brought up to the side of the aircraft you will see the the papal seal on the side of the plane and that will remain on this plane, even after the the trip completes in rome. >> so it will be a couple minutes until the holy father comes out, and walks down the the stairway to heaven as we are calling it now. what will happies the the reporters that are with him will will disembark first to get a position to be able to witness all of this and to be able to tell the story. so, bishop, as we stand at this crossroads, what is it saying about his -- what is holy father saying to the american catholic church, what has this conversation started to be and what does it continue to be. >> what he is trying to communicate to every one is welcome to the church, in the sense that we love you, and that christ loves you and we want to be the instruments of that love in the world. i think that is the heart of his message. >> we have found that he also was very bold, he was bold in washington, talking about economic opportunity, he was bold at the u.n. speaking about climate change, and really wanting us to be of our best nature. is that how you viewed it as well. >> i think so. i think that, you know, a lot of the commentary has talked about the layer of politics that seemed to per sprayed his ability. this is a pastor and man speaking as a shepherd not only as a catholic but of all people, speaking to their conscious, conscious trying to raise their a awareness for things that are most important in the world, a as we look forward to sometimes an uncertain future. >> we certainly do, you can, see also, in terms of the catholic faith we have seen people who have have been born catholics, cradle catholics but they don't necessarily really practice their faith and that is a tough thing, don't you find that difficult in fact in the work that you do as bishop of trenton. >> you know, i think for some reason the holy father has struck a cord, resonating with all people and especially catholics and those who may be in recent years felt a little alienated, disfranchised and drift add way from the church. truth does not change. christ does not change. but presenting it in a a way. the tone, the gesture, that has, caught peoples attention, and they are listening again. so that is a great thing. >> tell us a little bit more as we await him to appear at the top of the stairs, a little bit more about him being a jesuit, explain what that means. >> he is the first jesuit pope, and jesuit order was an order that was established, to teach, and to work in the church and the jesuits actually take a vow of obedience to the pope as part of their training. and as jim mentioned earlier it is a long process of training but the jesuits have the at heart really evangelist of god's people and they teach in so many institutions throughout the world. the pope himself was a teacher at various points. for a religious to become pope is quite striking because they bring with them not only priesthood but a special chairs man of their founders and their order and that does provide a flavor to everything that they say and everything that they do. >> it looks like the red carpet is rolled out for the the holy father, a 75-foot long, 9-foot wide, crimson carpet and it has an edge of gold, medal ons, design of the carpet, jim, on either side, they are reflective of stained glass at cathedral basilica in philadelphia. this is murrow family from langhorne carpet in langhorne and they have created this. i met the older gentlemen, actually who loomed this carpet. it was line by line, thread by thread and just beautiful, and also the young woman, who would stand at the carpet and click all of the extra little pieces of fiber. anyway, it was just a wonderful moment. they were very excited to be able to participate in anyway they could to make the holy father's visit and welcome to philadelphia a most special visit. we have all of the welcoming committee lining up on either side of the red carpet. >> in the back jet stairs are probably the press to get them off as quickly as possible. as i said, the holy father travels with the prep core on this particular trip there was 75 or 76 and that is a group that travels for the entire journey with him. the door is now opening on the triple seven jet, and i believe that was, yep, that is the carpet of the plane. >> coming out to make sure everything is sure. >> you want to make sure that railing is secure. >> yes. >> the papal security. the official papal photographer. >> that is probably the chief purser on the plane. you can notice the tie, i said that the vatican colors are used, with the accessories of the flight crew. they have replaced red, white and blue with yellow and white ties and here he is. >> here he is. >> welcome to philadelphia. >> isn't that great. isn't that beautiful. walking down the steps. again, just like he did, in washington he took off his zucchetto which is the the hat that he wears because of the wind. having a little bit of difficult. we understand he suffers from sciatica and sometimes it is painful and he is 78 years of age. >> imagine doing this type of a trip. >> archbishop chaput in philadelphia and his good friend archbishop vincent palia. >> i love the way they kiss each other on the cheek. look at his smile, and his way about him. he is engaged. he looks everybody right in the eye. >> genuine. >> absolutely. >> absolutely. >> so he had has some key members of his staff, behind him. the priest who is at his left arm, at his left ear is his official translator. he has just been extremely busy. so, archbishop chaput bringing the holy father over to greet all of the people there to see him. >> meeting governor wolf. >> former governor tom corbett went over to pitch the holy father to come to philadelphia. >> governor corbett is here, he will be in the basilica, talking to the family. >> isn't that beautiful. >> he is accepting flowers. >> look at the mother. >> where are the tissues. >> knowing, what this family has actually gone through, to have this moment it is just great. >> again, people will neat to tweet us to see if they are crying with us too. >> a great welcome from mayor nutter and also mrs. nutter. >> yes, really terrific, to be a able to see this pope. >> it is, as much as philadelphia has been like in lock down mode for past few taste, you know, we like to complain about different things in the news room especially but you sit here and this is what it is a all about. all of the inconvenience. this is history, the last time we had a pope here was many, many years ago. >> 1979. >> have of all popes who visit philadelphia i cannot think of a better one to just kind of, you know bring everyone together. >> he captivated, he has captivated the world. i find it so interesting is i have had jewish friend come up and say, pat, pope francis, i really liked your pope. can he be our pope too. it is so charming. it is because, i think of his humility that jim mentioned earlier about him carrying his own bag and we have seen that certainly happen, i am is many shoes, giving simple gifts, accepting simple gifts. it is what really lights him up. bishop o'connell has talk before about a actually seeing this bright light that when he is the the holy fatheres engaged with people, you see this bright light, just come out of his face, and his eyes. you know, even, it is fun. you can see his joy, see how animated he is. >> sometimes we have a tendency to look at people like the the holy father and just put them on the pedestal. this is a real man. making real connections with people and you can tell instantly puts people at ease and shows them his love and his care. >> they are part of his flock and he loves them just the same. that is very evident in the way that he greets people. >> it is. >> you know, bishop, he is really trying to walk the walk, he lives the life that he asked us to live, and i think that is a a powerful thing as well. he wants us to be able to connect with each other in a loving way wouldn't you say. >> absolutely. >> this is not just something new, not something that happens as you become pope, throughout his life he has been recognized as a man of simplicity, man of humility, who loves the the poor and eager to bring christ love in his message to all people. >> you can hear shanahan band playing in the background, the the holy father will enter the vehicle now and archbishop will be in the minivan behind the papal car and security car as it heads here to the cathedral. >> i thought what was fun, commissioner charles ramsey not a man to take pictures of events he is involved in but he was taking a picture of the holy father as he was getting into his modest car, is that a fia at as well. >> i believe it is, yep. >> we will see him later on today, and tomorrow as well, there are what we like to refer to as the pope mobile, those are jeeps. there are four that were shipped to the united states in august. one for each of the locations and a backup just in case but he doesn't really like the pope mobile. he calls it the czar dean can because he likes to get out there and meet the people. when else would you see a pope driving around in the fiat the. it just shows a lot about his priorities, if you will. >> other thing too, you can see him, in the beginning he rolls down the window so he could wave to people and there you see him with his hand out. >> it looks like he wants to jump out and say hi to the kid in the band. >> look at that. >> fabulous. secret service walking next to him. he vice excited. he is blessing, making the the sign of the cross, blessing the the people who are there to see him. >> here he goes. >> the pope will go a run. >> one of these great spontaneous moments. >> this is great. >> fabulous: >> he is talking to some little boy in the wheel chair. >> give me a tissue, if you can. >> i don't know if i should have done this coverage pat, i'm a wimp sometimes. >> just watch this, and absorb what this is. >> some of his sisters. >> sisters of the immaculate heart of mary. >> is just a wonderful woman, a sisters of immaculate heart of mary. >> she was a teacher of monica avery, one of our producers. >> that was great. >> that was great. >> again, we see the pope carving his own path even here in philadelphia, no sooner off the plane, off that red carpet into his fiat and asking please stop so that i can encounter my people, so that i can touch them, because he knows the power of not just him, but he knows the power of the spirit. he knows the power of god. he recognizees the fact that he is, the the vehicle for that, he is the embodiment of that and that is what makes him i think extraordinarily special. the other popes have felt that as well. it is wonderful to be able to see him, live that and share that with the people who are there and with all of us as a result. >> there is a certain hopefulness. whenever there is a change you will always hope for the the best and from what we have seen it is through these little moments of him getting out of the karen the other day in washington d.c. he could have had lunch with the elite of washington and instead he chose to have lunch with homeless people. yesterday in new york he was in harlem at a catholic school. it could have been a fancy hotel but instead in harlem talking to the teachers and to the children. >> it is in the the just this trip, he lives in very modest surroundings at vatican. he eats his meals at the the vatican cafeteria. he is not someone who cannot be touch, or cannot approachched one of the other things that is beautiful and maybe bishop o'connell, you can hear me with this question, that he does, he says mass in a chapel in santa marta and people he invites are the the people that are workers in the vatican. i found that extraordinary. he doesn't just say his daily mass in a private chapel. he wants to share that eucharist celebration with others. >> i had a great conversation with a staying with the holy father at santa a marta this past christmas before. when i arrived there and went to the elevator and the door opened and there was the the pope, in the elevator by himself. i had a great privilege of several days during that trip, of actually celebrating mass with the the pope, pope and myself, and a few staff there during the christmas break. it was an amazing experience, an amazing feeling, and then to go from chapel, to the dining room to the cafeteria and to be in line with my plate and across the line was the the pope himself, taking his role, taking his, breakfast, and it was just amazing. i just had to keep pinching myself saying this is the pope right across from here. >> it is, and what i find just remarkable, also, is his very, very, very simple way that he deals with the way that he deals with people when he is there. it is really fabulous with the way he connects with them and how he also gives a great message at that moment. it really becomes a teaching moment for the people who are just in that little chapel with him. >> some of the jesuits who were his people were surprised to see how very much a alive and how vibrant he is. when he i
