right now we're following breaking news. united states supreme court justice antonin scalia has passed away. authorities say the trenton, new jersey, native appeared to die of natural causes at a texas resort this morning. justice scalia was the longest serving justice on the high court and one of its staunchest conservative members. he was appointed by president ronald reagan back in 1986. justice antonin scalia was 79 years old. we'll have a look back at his life and legacy tonight at 11 o'clock. good evening, i'm natasha brown. thank you so much for joining us. we're turning to our other top story here locally. an auto body shop burst into flames late morning in frankford. it set up a column of smoke that could be seen for miles away. anita oh is on the 4600 block of griscom street where the building is still smoldering at this hour. anita. >> reporter: natasha, fire crews are working into their eighth hour fighting the six alarm blaze here on griscom street. we're told it started just before 10 o'clock here at this building behind me. i want to show you some of the damage. you can see that the building is still smoldering, there's a lot of collapse here and it's been very burned out and icy conditions are making things tough for firefighters as well. officials say they still don't know what caused this blaze. investigators say seven to eight properties now have fire damage and there were multiple collapses as well. we do know a mother and child as well as a firefighter were taken to a local hospital for minor injuries and as you can imagine these frigid wintry conditions have only made efforts more difficult for fire crews. >> you'll see frozen lines, frozen ice on the building so once you have water flowing in this type of temperature, it freezes up quickly. you have separate conditions for the members. >> reporter: we're told that only a few people had to be evacuated from the blaze here. there's a warming center set up right here at frankford friends school next door but for now that's the latest in frankford, i'm anita oh, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> all right, anita, thank you very much. along with the flames the firefighters also had to deal with dangerous cold that's gripping our area tonight. let's turn things over now to meteorologist lauren casey in the weather center with more on this arctic blast that all of us are feeling right about now. lauren. >> yes, it's feeling quite wintry, looking quite wintry. we had another round of snow squalls move through the delaware valley earlier in the day. we pick up a trace of snowfall at philadelphia international airport but storm scan3 showing us the trend of the evening and overnight tonight now that the sun has set, a lot of of those clouds are starting to dissipate, the snow squalls coming to an end. as we head into the evening hours those will no longer be a concern but a concern of course the bitter cold. temperatures right now 16 degrees in philadelphia. we're one below in mount pocono. 14 degrees right now in atlantic city and then of course we're contending with those whipping winds. your wind chill temperature already subzero and it's only 6 o'clock in philadelphia, getting close to 20 below the feels-like temperature in mount pocono, feeling like five below in allentown and that's because of those intense winds pulling out of the northwest. wind speeds up around 15 to 25 miles per hour and that's not even factoring in those brutal wind gusts. of course we still have this wind chill advisory in effect for the entire area until 9 o'clock tomorrow morning. your wind chill warning in effect for the poconos because of these bitter cold temperatures so we're going to keep around the blustery conditions but the temperatures themselves are going to be dropping down to near record territory. this is in the city. 5 degrees overnight tonight our previous record 2 degrees set back in 1979 so we'll talk about what those wind chill temperatures will feel like by tomorrow morning. you might not want to know but i have the information coming up so stay tuned. >> i'm thinking i probably don't but thank you very much lauren. we'll see you soon. police say a passing snow squall likely contributed to this deadly multi vehicle crash on interstate 78 in lebanon county pennsylvania. more than 50 vehicles were involved in this huge pileup about 10 o'clock this morning. so far at least three people are confirmed de, nearly 80 are injured. authorities set up a shelter at the scene to help drivers stay warm in these dangerously cold conditions. now to an "eyewitness news" exclusive. a local connection to the machete attack inside ohio. the suspected attacker is mohammed berry and his father lives in philadelphia. authorities say berry ran through the middle eastern restaurant and slashed four people with a machete thursday night. he was later shot and killed by police. now the fbi is investigating whether berry is connected to extremists. berry's father meantime spoke to "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff. >> reporter: you're going ohio. >> yeah. >> reporter: anything -- neighbors are going have questions. you're going ohio. >> yes. >> reporter: okay. >> all right. >> reporter: all right. >> thank you. >> authorities say berry is of somali heritage and he was in the u.s. on a green card. the university of tennessee is under fire tonight. six women, each of them current or former students are suing the university. they allege that they were sexually discriminated against after reporting a rape by a student athlete between 2013 and 2015. two of the athletes named in the suit are awaiting trial for their rape charges but in other cases the victims claim the school did nothing to help. the nine republican debate takes place on cbs tonight in south carolina. a week ahead of that state's primary. donald trump and ted cruz will be in center stage but the pressure is on another candidate as well to perform well tonight. craig boswell is in greenville, south carolina with the latest. >> reporter: before tonight's debate in greenville john kasich. >> god bless south carolina. classification level. earlier this week a federal judge ordered clinton's remaining e-mails released by the end of the month. and pope francis continued his visit to mexico today. this morning the holy father prayed at mexico's city cathedral and was presented the key to the city. later francis spoke to the faithful urging them to be strong in the face of drug cartels that have taken over parts same but temperatures are going to be tumbling but people it didn't stop them from heading out jack frost/big boulder, there were people about 15 minutes ago. looking a little sparse right now. we're getting a live look on skycam3. maybe they all turned in but there were people out there skiing and snowboarding the cold not keeping them away from the slopes but the cold keeping a lot of us inside. in center city the skies starting to clear out as we get a live look. temperatures 16 degrees in our neck of the woods. that northwesterly wind kicking at around 25 miles per hour making it feel like three below right now. we're just starting off the night. high temperatures today really struggled. i don't need to tell you that. 24 degrees the high in philadelphia. we should be at 43 for the average high temperature. highs only topped in the teens in mount pocono. and then we had those winds. winds gusting up to 37 miles per hour today in philadelphia. gusting up into the middle 40's in the poconos. same case down the shore. just brutal combined with these temperatures and your wind chill temperature right now in the teens at most of our reporting z already subzero on mount pocono. a wind gust right now, they're still kicking, not as intense as early in the afternoon but wind gusts still around 30 miles per hour and that will be the trend overnight tonight. feels-like temperatures we're already at three below in philadelphia, down at six below in reading, two below in atlantic city and nearly 20 below in mount pocono. and that's why we have this wind chill warning in effect for parts of the poconos until 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. we could see wind chill temperatures down as low as 35 below and that is dangerous when we're talking about wind chill temperatures. frost bite can settle in at those levels in 20 minutes or less, so of course you want to have all your exposed skin bundled up if you're heading outdoors tonight or for the first part of the day tomorrow morning, particularly in the poconos but wind chill temperatures all across the region are just going to be down right brutal and potentially dangerous. down to 25 below in the lehigh valley as low as 15 below in philadelphia and the surrounding counties and down the shore we could feel wind chill temperatures by tomorrow down to about 10 below zero. our overnight low going to be cold enough. 5 degrees northwesterly winds at around 10 to 20 miles per hour as i mentioned at the top of the show, that is near record cold for us. for tomorrow, 19 degrees, sunny, breezy and frigid. winds not going to be as strong tomorrow afternoon but we'll still have a bit of a breeze. storm scan3 quieting down after we had some of those snow squalls today but it's going to become active next week. monday, monday night and tuesday, this is wait looks like so far. i'll give you a brief preview. late show snow arrives on monday midday turning into a wintry mix. the wintry mix becomes all rain. one particular model but they're all kind of starting to come into agreement with that snow breaking out by midday and we'll see that transition over to a wintry mix and then eventually over to rain as we head into the evening and late evening. then overnight monday and then as we head into tuesday pockets of very heavy rainfall following that snowfall. we could see rainfall amounts potentially over an inch maybe even closer to 2-inches through the event on tuesday, so just a mess but hey, our temperatures turn around. up to 50 degrees on tuesday after our high of 19 degrees tomorrow for your valentine's day. things start to eventually quiet down but still a bit of a rollercoaster ride into the end of the week. spotty showers on wednesday, 43 degrees. quiet on thursday, chilly 36. but then we're back up into the 40's by friday so really something for everyone and a lot of fun in that extended forecast. >> boy, is that fun. today is so not fun, though, oh my goodness. i can't put on
