Family physician there rob danoff joins us this morning with some more answers to our questions. So doctor, thank you for being with us. Good morning. Hi. What are some of the most common symptoms that should alert to you possibly having zika. So four out of five people who get this infection have no symptoms at all but for those that do it is usually mild but there is a rash that starts on the face and then low grade fever, muscle aches, joint aches and red eyes conjunctivitis. Those are main symptoms. For people not pregnant or trying to get pregnant normally it is a mild illness for the most part. So four out of five. No symptoms at all. So for that 20 percent in there looking for potential, i feel like it has been summed up almost like flu like symptoms, fair assessment. That is exactly what it is. They are looking at this rare neurologic complicating rare complication they dont necessity if that happens weeks or months later. They dont know. That but they are looking at it. But for most it is more mild illness. The big concern is for woman who are pregnant and potential birth complications of their unborn child. So at this point with the concern about zika being what it is, that is the primary concern, that we are honing in on is the complications. It is called microcephaly a neurologic defect and the brain is smaller, it can lead to hearing problems, learning problems, vision problems and even children been in normal sized head they are concerned some of these complications may occur such as hearing and visual problems. It has been estimated between one and 13 percent of woman who acquire zika while pregnant may have a child with these birth defects and that is what the latest date ace showing. The that is why the big concern right now and really rush to develop a vaccine if we can prevent it from occurring, that would then decrease risk of birth defects. One of the bigger questions and i know you are on the front lines of these conversations, so im traveling to the caribbean. Im newly married or thinking about getting pregnant. As a physician what is doctor rob, the best advise to people who find themselves, in that leave predicament where they have to travel or they need to travel and yet they are looking to start families. Well, that is really important. What were advising people and cdc most importantly is that if you are trying to get pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant, both the male partner and the female try to avoid those areas where is there active infections of zika. The reason being because if you acquire it there is a risk of a birth defect. This is the latest recommendations. If you happen to travel to an area with zika and you want to get pregnant, well, if you do not have symptoms you need to come back and wait eight weeks at least before trying. If one of you would have symptoms if it is female you have to wait at least eight weeks. If the male has symptoms they said dont try to get your partner pregnant for at least six months. Last question, the measure being taken to rid mosquito, mosquito control. It is great. Cdc has an Emergency Response team. In other place can they track it like they are doing right now. There is a health plan in florida that is calling patients between ages of 19 and 45 who are potentially have children tracking them giving them free zika tests. Cdc is monitoring the situation. We have good access to repellants and best ones have deet or coil lemon eucalyptus. They are getting rid of the standing water. They are going home to home, house to house informing people about the the risk and how to protect themselves. Doctor rob, always a pleasure. Thanks for answering these questions.
