Meteorologist lauren casey in for kate bilo and she has the forecast from the cbs3 Weather Center. You have been in that Weather Center practically all day. Im ready for a nap as we are all, if you had to be out and about today. Conditions are starting to quiet down a bit. Center city philadelphia, of course, we have the snow, sleet pouring down this morning, and then we saw sunshine, and then a snow shower and then we have had some cloud. We are looking live at Center City Philadelphia overcast conditions. 33 degrees. Wind whipping out of the northwest at 21 miles an hour. It feels like 20 degrees. Storm scan three shows us we have moisture up wind but slow moving band of snow showers that could work in our western counties, abe could see a few flakes elsewhere but main energy of the powerful noreaster has, moved off to the north ande impacting new england right now but boy, that was, a storm, mount pocono picking up 24 inches of snow, 2 feet, allentown close to 14. Our latest total from philly international over 7 inches of snowfall despite that accumulating sleet. Wayne picking up six. Same case in king of prussia we had wind overtop of that, presip today to add to the misery. Wind gusting to the 40 miles an hour range earlier today along i95 gusting to 58 miles an hour in dover. Strong gusty wind down the shore. Wind speed, still elevated to 21, 25, 28 miles an hour, seeing higher gusts as well. We will still dealing with the windy conditions tonight, and then temperatures are starting to cool, now were the freezing mark in philadelphia sub freezing in wilmington and Lehigh Valley so everything that fell today will refreeze, as we head into the evening and overnight tonight, we will continue to see wind gusts up around 35 miles an hour, so that will yield sometime, of blowing snow, and especially when weaver those higher amounts, north and west of the city, and still a light passing snow shower in some areas but other white a concern for the wind tonight, and then, on those power lines , we have that snow and sleet that has accumulated, wind gusts still elevated, we could see more power outage ness to this evening and overnight tonight. We will talk about all of this fun and chance for snow squals , tomorrow, who is excited . Um, um, um. Okay. All right, lauren, thanks very much. Airport Officials Say Philadelphia International will be back to normal operations, tomorrow. That is crazy to look at. Meteorologist lauren casey with us, in for kate bilo and lauren, you have been quite busy today, as we wind down actual precipitation but it has left behind, a lot. Absolutely, yeah. We saw a lot of sleet, heavy sleet, you could hear it this morning. It was hitting windows. My dogs were scared. They didnt know what was going on. It was aing about part of the weather story to day. Large amount of sleet we got heavier at times. Meteorologist kate bilo breaks down science of how it develops. Im meteorologist kate bilo in the Einstein Health care Science Center. I want to talk about the storm and what made it more sleet storm then snowstorm here in philadelphia it those do with warm air aloft and center of the low place the. Lets talk about the low first and foremost. Heres satellite radar. Stop it at 8 00. You can see that center of the low pressure forming and intensifying off the coast but were already starting to see mixing. Center of the low right here is over portions of southern delaware, right along the coast. This allows warm air to intrude along the coastal plane and create that mixed threat f this storm would have went 20, 30, 50 miles to thee it would have been a completely different scenario with that cold air and snow being pulled into philadelphia and metro region which is why you have to allow for both scenarios either foot of snow or it is less than 6 inches. Of course we ended up with the smaller amounts. Lets talk about the dynamics of todays storm. Warm air intrusion in the upper atmosphere. Not at surface. At surface temperatures were sub 32 degrees. We were having sleet falling at 27 degrees outside. You cannot even go by surface temperatures, thin layer of warm air aloft, creating melting, sleet, ice, mixing moved further inland then any guidance has suggested and it was a prolonged, sleet bomb, hour or two of sleet change back to snow. This was hours upon hours of sleet. Heres how sleet forms. It falls as snow but then passes through this warm layer in the atmosphere, and once that snow passes through warm layer, it begins to melt. It then refreezes as it head town into colder air close to the surface but refreezes as ice, rather than as a snowflake. It starts as snow, falls as sleet. In addition to the sleet today we had freezing rain, few people asked what is difference between sleet and freezing rain. It is a similar process but what happens with freezing rain it starts as snow, falls through a thicker warm layer and it turns to plane old rain , and it stays rain, until it gets to the surface where temperatures are sub freezing and freezes on contact. That gives thaw glaze of ice. So, we had both. Sleet, ice pellets and freezing rain leading to more ice storm threat then a snowstorm, set up here in philadelphia today. In the Einstein Health care Science Center im meteorologist kate bilo. Thanks for that break down. We did have freezing rain that was heavier at times around portions of the area and that allowed for ice amounts to really accumulate, chest ill hearst in Camden County a quarter inch of ice, mount holly,. 19 of a case. Newark, delaware a tenth of an inch. Phl picking up a tenth of an inch of ice with freezing rain this morning what to expect . Yeah, we had sleet, we had frozen rain, on the ground. We had snow. It is all going to refreeze, as temperatures drop throughout the evening and overnight period, so that will yield hazardous travel conditions. So we will still have gusty wind and still sometimes of some scattered snow showers, and also, some blowing snow that is going to reduce our visability, locally and we are seeing that right now. Live look at Neighborhood Network cam, moving around are around because of the windy conditions and couple flakes flying by. Very snowy looking seen in reading where we did pick up 9 e daytoday. Storm scan three is showing us a snow shower overhead in reading right now add to go those flakes and the scene there we have some snow showers, mainly to the west, of our western counties, so that moisture could work its way through over next several hours as a passing snow shower but bulk of the precipitation, which was a lot has come to an end. Wind gusts are elevated upward of 40 miles an hour in wilmington. 40 miles an hour in millville. Any snow sitting on the ground , these wind speed will pick that up and reduce visibility with that blowing snow, visibility down to a half mile in mount pocono, down to 2 miles in wilmington. Also because of those wind we are dealing with these feels like temperatures, feeling like 16 degrees in wilmington. Feeling like 14 in reading. Two in mount pocono. And temperatures are slowly creeping toward that freezing mark, if they are not there already. Were at 28 in allentown. We are sitting on the freezing mark in philadelphia so a big concern for refreezing as we head throughout the overnight period with those 20degree temperatures. Ice, icy conditions, on untreated surfaces, roadways, sidewalks, try to limit your travel and just hang in doors. Overnight tonight, windy, frigid, few flakes possible down to 22 degrees. For our day tomorrow not the best of news, windy conditions , frigid, only 29 degrees with scattered snow showers, and snow squals as we head in the afternoon. With these temperatures sub freezing all across Delaware Valley we will not do much melting through the day tomorrow so road are going to be tricky but then as we head into st. Patricks day 38 degrees, sunshine that will start to melt that snow for us but then conversely we could see a few snow showers developing as we head into friday night even into friday night and saturday chance of rain and snow showers, things still looking pretty wintry as we head into the end of the weekend and start to jump up as we approach the official first day of spring next week. It has been a goodwin, okay winter. Not too bad. Dons up next with sports. It is an indoor sport they play on the hardwood and snow is still a factor.
