"eyewitness news" reporter trang do live with an update. good morning, trang. >> reporter: good morning, rahel, jim. right now police aren't sure why this family was targeted. they say it appears to have been attempt dollars robbery. though the homeowner was shot twice, he kept his wife and four little girls safe. >> terrifying moments for family of six, in the city's frankford section. a gun battle right in their own living room. leaving the father of four little girls seriously hurt. >> preliminary information is that this was a home invasion robbery, where the perpetrators were met by the 27 year old homeowner, who had a gun on his own. >> police say the family just learned home to the 1900 block of pratt street around 11:00 monday night. it was a knock on the door, and two men forced their way in. >> there was a struggle between the 27 year old homeowner, and these two males. and one of the perpetrators did shoot the homeowner two times. in his mouth and his leg. >> chief inspect store scott mall says the homeowner then returned fire, fatally shooting one of the men in the head. the other ran off. this violence unfolding while the man's wife and four young daughters, ages four, three, one and five month, were upstairs getting ready for bed. >> we're still very fortunate that his wife, nor any of his four children, were struck by gunfire, or injured in anyway. >> and that father is in serious condition at hahnemann hospital. meanwhile, police continue to search for that second suspect. but nor now, liver in frankford, trang do, cbs-3 "eyewitness news", jim, rahel, back to you. >> thanks very much, trang. >> meanwhile murder suspect jeremiah monell being held on $1 million bail this morning, cap in a wooded area yesterday afternoon. on the run from police, since his estranged wife was found murdered in her home at commercial township cumberland county back on december 19th. >> driver cooperating with police after a fatal accident with a pedestrian. the unidentified victim was pronounced dead shortly after being hit on ridge pike near northwestern avenue in springfield township at about 7:30 last night. the driver stayed on the scene nearby roads were closed while the accident was being investigated. bensalem, police are saying this truck did not stay on the scene after hitting cyclist, this accident happened around 9:30 in the morning sunday, on tennis avenue, near state state road. the victim suffered serious injuries, the suspected maroon chevy pick up is missing a passenger side mirror and has damage to the passenger side door. and north philadelphia, these sparking wires say firefighters' job even more difficult, battled fire 4300 block of north third street. fire started around 7:00 last night, firefighters stayed on the scene past midnight. peco had to temporarily cut off service due to the fire. there were no injuries. and, police in burlington county on the hunt for suspect driving around naked. the man has been spotted twice in medford, both times, getting out of his black jeep patriots, then quickly getting back in. on december 30th, westerly drive, east chef, police say the suspect got out of the jeep, ran toward some teenage girls. neighbors as you can imagine are on high alert. >> are you keeping an extra eye out right now? >> really. >> the dark humor. my goodness. >> well, if you get snowed on four times in a few weeks, this is what happens to you. >> fargo involve like a chain saw? >> yes. >> dig their way through the snow. >> exactly what they're use that for, exactly. >> we have no snow. >> no snow yet. >> friday may have chance to see the white stuffment back it up. talk about the fact that today is no picnic. we are going to deal with some soaking rain, through the majority of the midday here, and it comes from the same system that helped bring in severe weather in the deep south that we saw that video from just moment ago. meanwhile, here is the snow. currently working its way into canada. what had affected north dakota, beginning of the cold front that comes in, ushers in the chill. that will allow us to see snow. a lot of pieces to the forecast, first and for most, batch of rain working toward us as we speak, and bringing with it widespread swat of rain through the better part of the day, then comes the cold front, tail end of the week, will sends our temperatures on nosedive. that puts us anywhere from five to 10 degrees below average, which really isn't terrible. it is just perception of coming off of today, tomorrow, in the ooh, a then being stuck in the 30's, for the rest of the the forecast. now looking at the road here today, you will be dodging fog, drizzle early on. the worse of what this forecast has up it sleeve comes thankfully about the time the typical a.m. rush is winding down, but will likely be wet for the imagine zero or at this of the p.m. drive. steady rain will fall until at least about 5:00 p.m. before it begins to taper off from southwest to northeast. but ponding road spray, all concern, with periods of rain, soggy conditions today, high hitting 50. that will drop it back to 43 degrees, as skies begin to gradually clear, as we mention come thursday, we will see drop off on the thermometer friday. could even feature light dusting of snow, still a question mark, we will keep an eye on, that but looking like a decent chance, rahel. >> katie, thank you. busy morning on these roads, seeing quite a few accident. live look this morning, at overturned tractor-trailer, on the pa turnpike westbound, at the off ramp to valley forge. now, hard to see there, but looks like on the left side of your screen you can see those flashing emergency responding light. that's what that s looks like even though the ramp is partially block, traffic is able to get by. and no injuries reported. there is an accident we also want to tell you about on the roosevelt boulevard south bound at fifth street. there are reported lane restrictions, in the outer drive. so be mindful of that. and in bellmawr, new jersey, there is an accident on i295 northbound, approaching route 42. it was blocking one lane, but has now been moved to the shoulder. >> also, a live look this morning, new jersey, at route 42, near i-295. traffic is clear. no incidents to report there. it looks like traffic is heavier than we've seen yesterday. >> it does. >> people getting back to work and school. >> meisha is coming back tomorrow, people keep on asking social media. she probably buying her coffee right now. >> well, coming up: police are closing in on gunman wanted in the turkey night club shooting. coming up you will see a video selfie that police say the suspect took before the attack. >> also ahead, travel headache at airports across the nation. find out what forced thousands of pass inning tears wait in very long lines. next. >> you may recall convicted of 33 federal hate crimes, correspondent marlie hall shows us, could face the death penalty. dillan roof will continue to represent himself in court after a judge ruled he's competent following day-long hearing monday. roof was found guilty last month of murdering nine black parishioners at emanuel ame church in charleston, south carolina in june of 2015. the same injury that i unanimously convicted the 22 year old in federal court will now decide if roof should face the death penalty or life in prison. he'll make opening statement and closing argument, but won't call any witnesses, or present any evidence. he won't be allowed to approach witnesses or the jury. and will sit in a chair furthers from jurors and the victim's family members. some attorneys question if the process will be fair to roof when deciding it he'll live or die. >> the jurors have to get the information they need to reach the right verdict. and he's not going to give them any reason to spare his life. >> the penalty phase of roof's trial will begin wednesday, one day later than scheduled, after roof asks for the delay, because of the time he spent preparing for the competency hearing. prosecutors say 38 relatives of the victims and three survivors of the attack will testify. the church's congregation is whether roof will ask the death penalty. >> don't you see the pain that this has caused? >> roof also faces a trial in state court, another possible death penalty case. >> marlie hall, for cbs-3, "eyewitness news". us customs does not believe that malicious activity caused computer outages that delayed thousands of travelers. outages in multiple airports began about 5:00 p.m. yesterday, with the longest delays at miami international airport. now, some people claim they weren't even told what was causing the wait. one traveler called the experience despicable. >> it was insane. our global entry pass is denied, had a big x on it, then they proceeded, it was like line of a thousand people. or more. and it was absolutely despicable. coming from mexico, back in the united states, we just wanted to get home. they wouldn't let us. >> and the outages were fixed by 9:00 p.m. but yesterday was one of the busiest travel days of the holiday season. so probably affect add lot of people. >> indeed. speaking of the holidays, do you need to get rid of your christmas tree? >> and the hats and the gloves, all of it. an accident involving three vehicles on lincoln drive near gypsy lane east falls. there are injuries and reports of lane restrictions, use schoolhouse lane or mid ville avenue as alternates. >> there is an accident fifth street, reported lane restrictions in the outer drive, so keep that in mind. overturned tractor-trailer on the pa turnpike westbound, at the off ramp to valley forge. you can she picture in the middle there. better shot of the tractor-trailer looks like from the front. now, we do know that the ramp is closed and there is no word when it will reopen. well, updating our news from this morning, one suspect is dead, and another is on the run following a home invasion in the frankford section of philadelphia. >> "eyewitness news" reporter trang do live on pratt street with more on how the homeowner fought back. trang? do you take the warm weather and the rain or the cold? >> always trade off. >> what do you do? >> katie, thank you. taking live look this morning, obviously blocking two lanes on i59 southbound, girard avenue, there is also an accident on the northbound side of i95 near girard, that has been moved to the shoulder. so i95 near girard, very busy spot this morning. now, taking a live look at the ben franklin bridge, in camden, new jersey, there is some heavy fog. use caution there, doesn't look like too many people are out there. and there is an overturned tractor-trailer, on the pa turnpike westbound, at the off ramp to valley forge, you can see, picture in the middle of your screen there, that looks like the traffic really is from the front, so i vyed this area. the ramp now closed. there is no word when it will reopen. we will keep you posted, though. warning this next story may be hard to watch. a bedroom camera captures a toddler's remarkable re when is dresser fell on top of his twin brother. take a look. this all happened near salt lake city utah last thursday. the boys, seen in this video, can be seen climbing drawers when suddenly the dresser tips, falls over, one every them is trapped. that's when the brother, the other brother, seems to realize he needs to do something. >> just came around, again, the situation thinking i need to help my twin brother. what do i do here? so he sat there and thought so he just pushed with all of his might, funder right off his brother. and -- >> incredible. both boys are okay this morning, and now their parent say there wasn't even a loud noise when theth err fell, they didn't eel eyes what happened until they later watched the video. mother said she had to share the dramatic video so other parents realize how important it is to bolt dress tears nearby wall. we see these stories time and time again. so glad those two boys are okay. scary video there. well, it is first full week of 2017. and vowing to eat healthier in the new year, who amongst us isn't? there are few simple food swaps that can help up cut your calories. cbs-3 cafe with doctor rob who has some suggestions, good morning, jim, good morning, doctor rob. >> doctor rob is here in our cafe, also called the cafeteria. three meals, most eat bring breakfast, lunch, dinner, what else can we do throughout the day? >> a the low of times we over eat. important to have breakfast, gets our metabolic rate going. for example, too, we want to have some you have that will keep us full. so if we have a clear soup there is will save, versus creamy soup, will save over double the calories by having that, and here is a tip. if we would have soup 20 minute before lunch or dinner, it takes that long for our brain to say oh, we're full, we will actually save calories during the day, we'll notice we're full. for breakfast, eggs actually are very filling. so if we have eggs, three, four times a week. that will carry us through so we won't have the hunger smacks in the middle of the morning. >> what kind of modifications in i go for my latte every day, i know that's not the best thing in the morning. >> no. boy say here jim, let's make your coffee. >> wiped cream? >> skip the whip. >> ya? >> some people, whip cream, they put in the little flavor, so for coffee, 60 calories could be 600, basically clear coffee, cut back on the sugar, real important, but other things during the day, smacks. a loft times we snack on crackers, we snack on pretzels. >> i can go through whole bag. >> exactly. so you don't want to go through these bags. you want to taken stead 100-calorie over the small little packet, because this way it is calorie controlled. look at that cookie thing. one, couldn't you eat that whole woning. >> , i have. >> there are actually three servings in, there look for servings, that's 500 calories, so when we're like eating chips, eat the small packets, if not we'll just keep on eating, eating, and get 800 more calories a day and we don't need that. >> small portions. >> and smaller plates. i see these giant plates people have at restaurants, you don't need a huge plate, because you are likely to fill it up more. >> i have couple of plates thereto show you, basically use smaller plate, and if you use the color red, studies show we actually eat less, it is like a soft bite, smaller plates, and red plates, eat less. >> smoothie i know everyone on kicks, i think rahel is doing one of these smoothie things the next few days, what do i need to know? >> well, she running a marathon soon, she needs these. but with smoothie we can make 200-calorie smite i or 800, we don't want high calorie. we want healthyment don't use juice. careful how much peanut butter and granola you add to it, careful the type of yogurt. i would rather add the 200-calorie yogurt, and put in fresh fruit. because that will help with the healthy smoothie, use more ice, don't use juice. and you have healthy smoothie all of the ingredient less calories. >> now tonight for dinner i'm like on this salad kick for the next few days, as well. but do you have watch out for the dressing and what you are putting on, that's where it is so troublesome? >> you can make a salad with as many calories as hot fudge sunday. there is dress that adds another 400 calories to. that will we don't need. that will instead light balance some i can, 606 calories. so having a saladment make it healthy. have it flavor full type salads. lastly look at portions, this actually is a portion. each little cubical is a portion. now, couldn't you eat way more than that on europe plate? >> oh, yes, easily. >> so we tend to eat way bigger portions than we should. so just like you said, that's typical plate, that white one that we use, way too big f we want to start eating healthier and eating less, smaller plates, right portion sizes, and we will feel energized but feel better. >> what about filling up before you eat with a glass of water? like i try to do that about 15 minute before i sit down to eat. for some reason, i don't know if it is triggering my brain, but i don't feel as hungly. >> you're right, 20 minute from the time we put something in our stomach our brain says we're full. by you doing that, by the time you eat your meal, start to feel full and you eat less. so, quick tip: glass of water 15 to 20 minute before your meal or clear broth. by the time you eat your meal you won't be as ram just, more energy, feel better. >> okeydokey, have to go buy bigger pans. stay with us.
