Weeknights at 11 00 you asked and Nicole Brewer answers your good question. Tonight brian from center city asks what is the jet stream, we will see the big curvey line on the weather map, we will hear bit affecting weather and travel but what exactly is it . Our Nicole Brewer has the answer tonight at 11 00. Lets look at those maps, talking about some weather coming in our area. We have a lot of weather, coming next 24 to 36 hours it the is dicey across the board, rain, snow showers and even a period of potentially heavier snow tomorrow evening into tomorrow night. So this system has been disorganized from the get go but we are nailing down at least timing when heavier snow is expect to come through. It is a 1 2 punch one system swinging through tonight into tomorrow. New system will tap into that first system and impact us tomorrow evening. Under cover of darkness tomorrow night temperatures could be cold enough that could accumulate quickly. Let look at what we have going on. We will start on storm scan three. Note thinks system encompassing much of the eastern half of the country. We have scattered snow showers from portions of missouri, illinois, all way toward West Virginia and virginia at the moment. Rain showers popping up over the state of virginia, and temperatures in our area still in the 40s in many spots, so if this starts within the next few hours it will start as just light rain showers but again, you can see how scattered, intermittent precipitation is. It is not a heavy shield moving through. That is what we expect through tonight, scattered, light to moderate rain or snow showers. Heres the system that brush the coast, producing heavy band in new england. That will move out but still risk for coastal flooding thanks to one storm departing and another one, moving in. So lets talk about our winter alerts. The once again that bright pink, it is winter storm warning that will go into effect at midnight tonight and continues until 6 00 a. M. On wednesday. Keep in mind that is generally, about 30 hours, of a winter storm warning that we will be under, starting under midnight tonight and continuing into wednesday morning, a Long Duration event, and heres what were looking at. Note three is a. M. We will get light snow showers, you can see light shading, sorry about this ugly color pallet but this model shows what i want to illustrate with this system. The whiteys light snow. That is rain showers, down the shore, through the day tomorrow, watch what happens. Notice a the 1 00 is there not a whole lot going on, perhaps enhanced snow showers around baltimore area. But notice we will get coastal connection. That is is when you see system developing off the coast. Throwing moisture back this type of system tend to have mess owe scale banding, heavier enhanced snowfall rates on the northwest site of the system. That is over the philadelphia area as we head through tuesday evening. Here we go, after sunset tomorrow night, that is when we could see enhanced period of snow, in philadelphia and when it gets cold enough later tomorrow night that snow could pile up and could lead to a accumulations on the road. The these snowfall amounts start tonight, and continue through, tuesday and into wednesday morning, a general three to 6 inches for philadelphia, much of the south jersey, delaware and portions of montgomery and bucks counties. One to three further north but this will pile up gradually. Half inch, to an inch overnight tomorrow morning, less than a inch tomorrow afternoon mainly on the the grass, road should be wet but two to 3 inches plus possible tomorrow night, in those heavier band. You can see descrepancy here. A few are around a inch, one over six. It depend where that heavier banding sets up. That is why this system is just so hard to pin opinion down. Three to six sound good for me in philadelphia over period of 24 plus hours. Your tuesday again snow at times with varying intensity. Then watch what happens, we will get this storm out of here and take a look at that big black hole of cold arctic air, lurking to the north. The weakened is down right frigid, in fact, temperatures may average 20 degrees below normal. It toss stay dry but man, that cold air is entrenched into next week. When we have that cold air it will be hard to escape without getting another storm and there are signals next week another system could come through but we will worry about the one we have so far. Lets get through tomorrow. Appreciate it. Cbs evening news is just a few minutes away. Scott pelley joins with us a look ahead, scott.
