Cbs news correspondent susan mcginn is tells us arthur is first hurricane to make land fall in the u. S. Since hurricane sand any 2012. The surf is head in nags head, North Carolina after hurricane arthur blew through. It was scary. You could hear wind and rain hitting the house. Reporter arthur made land fall on North Carolinas outer banks as a category two hurricane. The storm delivered 100mile per hour wind and heavy rains, causing flooding, and leaving tens of thousands without power. There have been no casualties or serious injuries reported and that was our number one goal. That puts a big smile on all of our faces. Reporter 250,000 people were expected to fill the outer banks for the Holiday Weekend, but thousands ended up evacuating their plans cut short by arthur. In dublin county North Carolina a suspect tornado touched down. All of a sudden i heard wind blow real hard, and then headed to the bathroom, the ceiling was just collapsing behind us. Reporter authorities are warning, swimmers to be careful of possible rip tides as North Carolinas beaches reopen. If you are living or heading up to perhaps, spending the Holiday Weekend in new england they are getting slammed right the now with heavy rain from boston down towards cape cod but in our area, skies are clearing, just a few clouds, left up here in ocean county but otherwise it is turning out beautiful across the entire region for the remainder of tonight. Lets track arthur as the storm moves away the it is still a category one hurricane with sustained winds of 80 miles an hour, gusts to hundred miles an hour. Central pressure at 979. It will head up towards nova scotia and become subtropical or Tropical Storm or depression. Still dangerous rip currents but should get there as we move through the day on saturday and then, again, just downgrade to a low and then move away from frustrates. Peak wind gust as cross the area we have 35 miles an hour with arthur moving off shore in dover, wildwood hit 35 miles an hour as well, we had wind gusts to 32 miles an hour at Philadelphia Airport and in the upper zeros in wilmington and in trenton. High surf advisory in east affect through tonight, but as you can see a dangerous rip currents will continue through the weekend. Waves four to 8 feet. Look at that ocean the water temperature, 59 degrees, earlier to daze and yesterday, ocean water temperatures were in the 07s but arthur came through and churned up that water. We had water upwelling as that storm came through and stirred everything up out there. Ocean water much, much colder now. Probably good thing it may keep some people out of the water and things dangerous you dont wanting to in unless you really have to. 78 degrees right now at the airport. Comfortable 78 in wilmington. Fiftyseven in reading. Look at our dew points. Dew points in the 40s and 50s from the city on west. Sixty in millville and atlantic city, that is very, very pleasant. Lets look at our comfort index. Dew point really measures the amount have of moisture in the air. Dew point right now is 54. But dew point tomorrow will be 50, and that brings us right down into the awesome range, it just does not get much better than 50 degrees dew point in high summer. Just a few days ago we were up here, in insufferable, it will feel fantastic for saturday. Down right awesome. As far as winds are concerned it is still breezy. Net is 7 00 p. M. We have wind from the north and west, 17 miles an hour at the airport. 20 miles an hour in wilmington. Still breezy. These are sustain winds. Gusts will be higher over 30 miles an hour the at times tonight. But as we head through tonight and into tomorrow morning, the winds do start to die down. It is still that northwesterly flow. Still breezy with winds of 15 miles an hour. Very comfortable though. That why is there is no humidity that northwest wind. Watch what happens at the end of sunday. Here comes a change in wind direction. Wind south and west, starting sunday afternoon and that will bring a lot more heat and a lot more moisture our waste and, well, it will feel like july again, very, very quickly. A dramatic rescue out of washington state, Officials Say a hiker who decided to climb down a cliffside, became stranded and use his cell phone to call for help. Cbs news correspondent alexis christopherus shows us how guidelines are changing the way we treat this painful condition. Reporter daniel, is an active, seven yearold but swimming can be problematic. He often gets swimmers ear, like he did on his recent vacation to the bohamas. One day my ear started to hurt. When he was diving in under the water, and then, later he would have a high fever and the food was coming out of the ear. Reporter swimmers another is a painful infection of the ear canal. Besides swimming people can get it to any scratch of the ear that can let bacteria in. 40 percent of swimmers ear infections are treated with airal antibiotics but new guidelines from the American Academy of ears advised against the pills. Bad idea, side effects, causes resistance and delays recovery. Reporter doctor Richard Rosenfeld was lead author of the new advisory. He says doctors should treat infection with ear drops. Antibiotic ear drops can be a thousand times more concentrated then what you take by mouth so it really is like dropping a bomb, on a bacteria. Reporter about half of the swimmers ear infections air monk children 15 and younger, daniels mother nately hopes he grows out of it as he gets older. I just want it to be over. An infection gets better within 27 hours after treatment.
