but nothing really seems easy during this year's race for the white house. former pennsylvania governor and dnc chairman ed rendell told "eyewitness news" he's not worried but he's realistic. >> we government. that went away with sequestration. philadelphia doesn't have the budget surplus it did in 2000 sand when the rnc was in town. but the fir reason might surprise you. rendell blames republican nominee donald trump for the loss in dnc revenue. >> because of donald trump's candidacy and because of the things he said about latinos and muslims a number of major national companies quinnipiac university poll shows clinton with a small lead over trump. developing right now, philadelphia police are on the scene of a deadly hit-and-run in hunting park. investigators say an 18-year-old was struck and killed by a stolen toyota prius on the 3900 block of old york road. they tell "eyewitness news" the driver ditched the car two blocks away on the 1300 block of west pike street and ran from the scene. the search is on right now for that driver tonight. also knew tonight, authorities have arrested a man who they say attacked a woman and her teenaged daughter. 39-year-old malik bailey was captured in south philly this evening after brief chase with police. he is accused of of attacking his 38-year-old wife and then sexually assaulting his 13-year-old step daughter in their frankford home tuesday. bailey has three prior arrests for drug related crimes. a bucks county woman has been arrested for the third time in 16 months. in connections with an insurance fraud case. claire, accused of intimidating witnesses by causing the issuance of inappropriate subpoenas. the subpoenas from the bucks county court of common pleas sought among other things the person until file of a witness in the case and various internal documents. she was charged in january 2015 for a iteming to defraud insurance companies of more than $20 million. philadelphia police are investigating a shooting involving an off duty police officer outside a busy hospital in north philadelphia. i eyewitnesses say the officer opened fire at broad and tioga late last night after he was hit by a green monte carlo while ride ago motorcycle. police saying the three shots discharged by the officer' struck a nearby window at temple university hospital. there were no injuries. officials say the unidentified officer drew his weapon after sensing danger. >> when he gets up to approach the vehicle he believes that someone is pulling a weapon. he discharges his being offed for information leading to an arrest in the death of 78-year-old joseph daily. he was found dead in his theodore street home yesterday. police say he was beaten and strangled likely by a group of kids that targeted him previously on friday night. police say the suspects made off with his bluford forward van it has a pennsylvania tag pd5338z. there are new details you tonight about the murder suicide that caused panic on the campus of ucla. cbs news has learned a professor died in the shooting at an engineering building this morning. sources say it appears a male student shot and killed engineering professor william klug. los angeles swat teams swarmed the campus as it went into immediate lock down. >> everybody started running. i didn't know why are we runni running. the police officer was yelling at us get out, get out with a machine gun. >> i now it was serious. we went in class and they lock the door. i assume police were check the doors because someone tried to open our doors. >> police have not said what led to that deadly shooting. >> retired pro wrestler jimmy super fly snuka will not strand trial for murder. the 73-year-old was mentally incompetent the judge ruled. he was charged in the 1983 death of his girlfriend last september. the judge says she doesn't believe that snuka is capable of faking dementia symptoms. he will be re-evaluated in six months. a small airplane crash in chester county sent a pilot and his passenger to the hospital with minor injuries. this happened at the new garden flying field around 9:00 o'clock this morning. authorities say that plane lost power during take off and then collided with a hangar. no one on the ground was hurt. the faa is now looking into what exactly caused that crash. some new wheels bring attention and special needs. he's the happiest little boy we know. >> there we go. >> for little ones dealing with so much, the cars provide way to play just like other kids can. >> these are kind of cars your typical child would drive and ride. takes the medical treatment out of the picture a little bit and gives him a -- allows him to, you know, focus on being a kid and playing with other kids washington, jessica dean, kate bilo and don bell. we are hearing the 911 calls tonight from the mother of that young boy who fell into the gorilla enclosure at the cincinnati zoo. the boy's mother pleaded for help while repeatedly shouting at her son to remain calm. >> cincinnati 911. >> hi, my son fell in the zoo exhibit at the gorilla. there's a male gorilla standing over him. ooh need someone to contact the zoo please. >> all right. we already have help started there. >> be calm. be calm. be calm! >> he's dragging my son. i can't watch this. i can't -- be calm. >> i can't watch. >> zookeepers killed the endangered gorilla save the boy' life. police are still reviewing the parents actions that led up to the incident. ultimately the decision to pursue possible charge social security up to the local prosecutor. the boy's family says they will not sue the zoo. this summer more young drivers will be on the road and the number of deadly crashes is expected to increase. >> over the past five years, more than 5,000 people have died in crashes involving teen drivers during the summer period known as the 100 deadliest days distraction is a big cause of action. >> but what is the number one distraction for teen drivers that's a good question and nicole brewer joins us with the answer to that. >> ukee and jess this answer may actually surprise a lot of people. so what is the biggest driving distraction for teens? it's a good question especially as we gear up for the summer driving season. ♪ >> what do you think is the biggest distraction for teen drivers? >> the phone. >> phone. >> phone. all day phones. >> texting absolutely. >> new study by triple a confirms what many believed teen drivers are using their cell phones more often behind the wheel. but it's not the number one problem. >> really? >> what is it? >> latest aaa research shows that it's actually the number of passengers in the car with novice drivers. >> good get out of here. that's interesting. >> wow. i didn't know that. >> dane at a tidwell spokesperson for aaa. she says passenger distraction accounts for 15% of accidents involving teenaged drivers. >> i could agree with that especially when they got they friends in the car. >> cell phone use wasn't far behind causing 12% of teen driver crashes. >> 11% of distractions are teens who are just looking for something or attending to something in the vehicle. >> i can see that. cell phone, coffee spilling all over place there. what percentage involve distracted driving. >> i would say more than 50%. >> upwards of 60%. >> i got to say at least 80%. >> according to aaa it's 60%. tidwell says it's time to consider the consequences since the number of deaths increase in summer. >> from memorial day through to labor day we refer to that time period as the 100 deadliest days on the road for teen drivers. >> reporter: crashes involving teen drivers soar to an average 10 per day, 16% higher than the rest of the year. >> there's so many more things going on on the roads than there were 10 or 15 years ago. >> it's not just the kids. >> no, it ain't. me am of almost going off the road looking at my phone so i definitely understand that. we got to apply what we know. we have to. >> yeah, that's for sure. how can we cut back on the number one distraction? well, aaa recommends have no more than one non family passenger under age 20 inside the car for at least of the first six months. right now in pennsylvania junior drivers are allowed one passenger under the age of 18 who's not a family member. they think that law could be strengthened. >> good to know. >> i don't think just teens we're talking about. >> yeah. more is going on the less you're paying attention. >> a lot of us are guilty of this, sure. >> what's foods. the average american eats about 3400 milligrams of salt a day. these new proposed guidelines aim to gradually decrease daily sodium and intake to 2300 milligrams. the goal is lower american's blood pressure which has been linked to too much saul in the diet. the guidelines are voluntary. companies would not have to follow them. new at 11:00, a south street favorite is back. it was opening start of meteorological summer, june, july and august most people think about summer. astronomical summer begins on june 20th. the summer solstice when the sun is at the tropic of cancer in goes until above that but we'll bring it back closer to average next couple of days. thursday and friday little bit more comfortable. still that easterly flow continues and that's going to help keep our temperatures little bit on the cooler side for the next few days. 71 in allentown. 70 philadelphia comfort al 66 along the shore points right now. and that cooler air extends all the way into new england. bar harbor, maine 52 degrees. we won't that be cool. as long as we have that flow off the ocean temperatures will get closer to average over the next few days. humidity levels like i said they drop a little bit tomorrow we'll call it pleasant and friday increase as little bit with our next storm system that remains on the humid side for the week. at heft we got one day of some comfortable conditions. little spin cluster of showers and storms off cape hatteras right now that's the remnants of bonnie lingering over the carolinas. that gets kick out over the next few days. stays well to our south. we're in the clear right now. dry day for thursday. more showers over the ohio valley late thursday night into friday. today mark the start of the atlantic hurricane season. we've had two named storms. guck it a named storm any time any month of the year. the peak of the season is september 10th. usually see low activity this time of year most of the storms form down near the gulf of mexico and caribbean for the month of june have to watch that. there's the remnants of bonnie. well to our south. so tomorrow we're dry, sunshine and clouds, 80 degrees. next weather maker a weak cold front brings a few scattered showers around for friday maybe a thunderstorm. don't cancel the outdoor plans because key word here is scattered look like the first half of the weekend is okay. saturday, sunshine little bit warmer mid 80s second half of the weekend bring back rain chances no threat of rain tomorrow. 40% chance on friday. saturday looks good. and then 80% chance sunday. sunday is the day with our next best shot to see white spread rain. look at the fog that tries to move inland tomorrow morning. along the jersey shore. parts of the delaware beaches. everywhere else pretty much some sunshine. that fog could linger into early afternoon. along the coast with that east wind. otherwise partly sunny skies and a couple of showers trying to move in late thursday night. friday morning scattered showers maybe a thunderstorm gets better by the afternoon. overall trend keeps us somewhat at or above average into the weekend but notice this cool pocket of air coming out of the northern place that arrives next week so we'll get a hit of cooler air as we head over the neck several days. comfortable tonight a few clouds, 64. tomorrow partly sunny, pleasant high of 80
