in philadelphia. ♪ >> a live look now at ben franklin parkway. this was the place to be just a few moments ago. all day long but now, it's clearing out. as the first day of the pope in philadelphia goes in to the history books. hi, good evening, everyone, welcome back. i'm ukee washington. >> hi, everyone, i'm jessica dean. we are broadcasting to you from the ben franklin parkway tonight right hyped us the stage where the festival of families took place tonight and where the papal mass will be celebrated tomorrow. >> you can certainly feel the excitement it's all about families and it was all about hope. no doubt about that. >> no doubt about that. somebody who had front row seat to all our own steve patterson who's been out with so many people today taking it all in. steve? how are you? >> reporter: i'm still talking it all in, guys. jessica, ukee washington more can you say about moment in history? we've been trying to fine the words all night and somehow we have been, but truly compared to what we have seen and heard tonight, it's almost unbelievable. i mean, from the moment he stepped off the plane here this morning until tonight, it has been nothing but incredible moment after incredible moment and then we got a chance to see him sit down and actually pay attention to what philadelphia could bring to him and some of the amazing performances from tonight and for more on that i want to show was we saw right here on stage. take look. entrance etched in history. on one of the most memorable nights in the history of philadelphia pope francis graced the ben franklin parkway for the first festival of families on u.s. soil and then he blessed the crowd. ♪ >> in the name of the father, and the son and the holy spirit. >> reporter: from there the pope did what so many have come to love him for he listen to the stirring voice of andrea bow chill toll the queen of soul herself, aretha franklin. >> ♪ >> reporter: and the boy who brought down the house, little bobby hill from the keystone state boys choir singing a cappella for the pope. >> ♪ >> i spoke to bobby after his incredible performance. >> what was that moment like? >> it was amazing. >> when the producer said what do you got? i said, i got bobby. >> the best part bobby's choir director steve fisher says his star student had no idea he'd be popping without backup or even a keyboard for the leader of the catholic church. >> i feel i did okay. i thank you for saying i did a good job though. >> all day philadelphia was wowed awed by the presence and grace of pope francis. but tonight will go down as the night philadelphia wowed the pope. >> thank you. see you tomorrow. (applause). >> reporter: incredible end to an incredible u.s. trip here in the states and also visiting philadelphia and much more to come as mass starts tomorrow. we'll be here to bring it to you live. steve patterson live on the parkway, back to you guys. >> all right, steve, thank you so much. thousands of people phil the parkway. there were people in front of the stage and all down the parkway people gathered in to watch on the jumbotrons out there. >> many of the faithful out there came from a very long way away. some open hitchhike as we heard earlier. came from very long way away. our greg car goes standing by with more on that. greg? >> reporter: ukee, jessica, good evening. what a historic day this has been for our city just about an hour and a half ago we had hundreds of thousands of people packing the parkway here. the pope himself sitting on the stage right behind me and people from all across the country, all across the globe, came here to hear his holiness speak. ♪ >> reporter: thousands and thousands packed the ben franklin parkway. men, women, children with different backgrounds, different stories but all here for the same reason. to see pope francis. >> i started in washington right on the coast and i just walk up the to the local little market on the corner. we don't have gas station there. but i put my thumb out. >> this man hitch hiked here from more than 3,000 miles away on the hopes of receiving a special papal blessing. >> i have a sister who's ill and i come here to pray for her and the evidence of the earnestness of my prayer. and that's why i hope to get out of it and maybe a miracle for her. that's what she needs. >> we're here because we would like to meet pope francis. in rome there's tradition where newlyweds can come wedding a tire and get to meet the pope. we were hoping that we'd be able to do that here in philadelphia. >> reporter: that's why blake robinson and christina his bride of one month tuck in the massive crowd. >> it's been great. so much fun. everybody is like, wants to take pictures with us. there was a little girl who thought he was a princess. >> reporter: but even more so than christina, the you had crowd here was really looking for picture and glimpse of the holy father himself. >> it was a great experience for me. the pope was here in philadelphia. >> it was amazing. i think it will be even more amazing when we attend mass tomorrow. >> pope francis real sal beacon. he's a star. he's shining star. >> reporter: and back here live, the parkway was filled with people. now that it's packed with trash you can see that's expected of course when you have tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people who were gathered here just about an hour or so ago. this will all be transformed, of course, overnight. in fact the papal stage for the presentation today will become an altar for mass and once again we're expecting an even larger crowd tomorrow. we'll have continuing coverage all day, all afternoon. for now we're live along the parkway, i'm greg argos, cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> okay, greg, thank you very much. here on the parkway in the birthplace of america and saying that what better mace than independence hall for the pope to give his speech on immigration and religious freedom. >> 40,000 people turned out for that this afternoon and our todd quinones was there first hand to take it all in. he joins us now with more on this. todd, it was quite a site to s see. >> reporter: quote a site indeed, jess. you know using the same lectern that abraham lincoln used to deliver the gettysburg address. pope francis really reached back into our nation's history to deliver a message about our future. ♪ >> reporter: on these historic grounds pope francis reminded us independence hall serves as a beacon around the world. while speaking in spanish, he challenge us to constantly reform our lofty prince of freedom and tolerance. >> we remember the great struggles which led to the abolition of slavery, the extension of voting rights, the growth of the labor movement and the gradual effort to eliminate every kind of racism and prejudice directed at the successive waves of new americans. >> reporter: people in the crowd soak up every word. >> this was amazing. it was something out of any word can i say to explain how -- how happy i feel. how -- my heart is -- >> i get to sit right front so it was incredible to see him in person and once in lifetime experience devil. >> reporter: the biggest themes of his speech immigration and religious freedom he encouraged people of all faiths to continue to fit for the poor and immigrants. >> you remind american democracy of the ideals for which it was founded and you remind us that society is weakened whenever and wherever any injustice prevails. >> i can't stop crying. it's emotion. big emotion. >> he attracted all these people. i'm not even catholic. i go to mother bethel. >> reporter: pope francis the son of italian immigrants was born in argentina. took the time to specifically address hispanics in our count country. >> i ask you not to forget like those who came here before you, you bring many gifts to this nation. please, don't ever be ashamed of your traditions. >> reporter: so quite emotional and quiet an inspirational day here at independence hall. reporting live tonight in old city, todd quinones cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> todd, thank you so much for that. right before the pope spoke at independence hall, he went to saint charles borromeo seminary in wynnewood to get some rest. that's where he's staying for the weekend. pontiff was greeted by 150 seminarians who cheered as the holy father arrived in his fiat. the seminarians sank a song they consider their anthem before posing for photos with francis. >> earlier pope francis celebrated mass with about 1600 faithful at the cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul. ♪ >> a sea of smart phones greeted the holy father to capture the social moment as he went inside. chris his homily he invoke the name of philadelphia st. katherine drexel asking what about you? he challenged those in attendance to strength they are churches and communities through faith. >> this does not mean relinquishinrelinquishing the sl authority with which we have been entrusted, rather, it means discerning and employing wisely the manifold gifts which the spirit pours out upon the chur church. >> pope francis also called on the church to inflict higher value on woman. we'll have more on did's mass coming up in our next half hour. the first moments of the pope's day in philadelphia were especially emotional for one family who received a rather unexpected blessing. >> as pope francis came off the plane and began greeting those who were there to greet him on his arrival, he started doing the thing we know him best for now the unscripted moments but the ones that are more often the most moving he got out of his car to bless 20 yeared michael keating who has cerebral palsy and while his family says the disorder took his ability to speak or move, they say he felt something at that special moment. >> the fact that the pope kissed him on the head and blessed him is something that i would have never imagined possible for any of of my children. >> looked up to him and after he blessed him he started smiling. >> to see this their emotion was the same as mine. they took it for what it was, and just -- they're going to remember this. >> other people who welcome the pope on his heft rick rival included governor tom wolf, mayor michael nutter and police commissioner charles ramsay. >> as it would be the pope has another full day, full day ahead of him tomorrow before he departs back for the vatican. >> it gets started at 9:15 tomorrow he gets up early. pope francis meets with seminaries and bishops at saint charles borromeo seminary. at 11:00 he'll visit quran-from hold correctional facility. at 4:00 o'clock what many catholics have been looking forward to for long time pope francis will celebrate mass on the ben franklin parkway at 8:00 o'clock he will leave for roam. quite a whirlwind indeed. with an eye toward tomorrow, that's the day where we've been looking at possibility of rain and a lot of people are wondering if the weather will hold. >> let's find out meteorologist kate bilo is standing by high above the parkway to break it down for you. ukee and jessica, it's almost as if our area is protected from the storm that's been threatening for the past week or so. kind of calling it the pope bubble. take look what's happening that storm it look like it was creeping into the area yesterd yesterday. now it look lying it's all but fallen apart just a few scattered showers on storm sca scan3. those are mainly going to stay south of the area as we head through the day on sunday. now coming up we'll have your full sunday planner as we go through the course of the day what to evening here in philadelphia. this eyewitness cam video shows the exodus of pilgrims on spring garden making they are way to the broad street subway station. >> so many people it was very ordinarily but everyone was looking nor spot. the spot to get a glimpse of the pope. >> that's right. >> we did find that there was a sweet spot out there. >> that's right. if you were along city avenue today, you were going see the pope maybe couple times. rhill sullivan was there and she i was it all. >> this was probably one of the best spots to catch pope francis today. he drove by several times and earlier we saw some crowds here this is city avenue and 54th street. for all of those people who were here, traffic was closed on city avenue. so for all of those folks here, they got very very good image of pope francis earlier. >> they all game with one goal in mind. >> even though it's just a split second that you have that encounter, it's enough. >> reporter: people of all faiths from here and far behind city of a saturday to catch a glimpse of pope francis as he made his way to forty one saint charles borromeo seminary. >> it's nothing like it. i really like the pope. he's amazing. >> reporter: did you ever think you'd see a pope driving through your neighborhood? >> never. not on 54th street, no. i was shock. >> reporter: some like traveled eight hours from canada to see pope francis but the site was pleasantly different than she expected. >> and then there's a little fiat and i froze. not a picture. not a nothing. but a wave and this gentle, ki kind, pure soul. >> lillian grimsley didn't have to travel nearly as far for pontiff siting. she's from lower merion but she says the moment was no less special. >> restores your faith. restores your faith in that the country and people. >> reporter: and greeted once more saturday as he made his way back for the night it was clear along city avenue the people's pope is very much loved by the people. we alluded to this earlier. but we saw pope francis today four times in this very spot. three win a couple of hours or so. so quite a busy schedule. he passed back through city of a win the last hour or so to the seminary. likely to get some rest for the night because as we know, he has another very busy schedule tomorrow. roaring live from lower merion, rahill solomon, cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> thank you. pope francis keeps very packed schedule no doubt about that. thanks so much the. the people you saw in her story with the tears in their eyes we saw that over and over again. a lot of people who say they're changed by this experience. >> let's continue with our special pope in philadelphia coverage with "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt on the parkway. good evening, david. >> reporter: ukee and jessica, good evening to you and what an evening it was. just a beautiful night. the weather held off. it was perfect. people had such a great time and i was chatting with some people out here tonight on the parkway in what really caught their eye was the fact that they could see the pope much closer than they thought. i had a chance to speak with a couple of people. we'll play that sound in a second, but one of the women i spoke her name is sister constance she's from little sisters of the poor in washington, dc. and she met the pope. he came to the elderly home where she work just few days ago. i want to you hear what sister constance had to say about surprisingly meet pope francis when he walk in to her home. >> he just walk in the back door of our chapel out of his car into our chapel and we were all applauding he just started spontaneously going from sister to sister to shake each one's hand ton speak to us. >> i saw the pope going down the, you know, this roadway right here. >> reporter: what did you think? >> it was worth it. i just looked and they said, i wanted to see a man with love in his eyes. i am about to celebrate my 50th anniversary of being a sister on they thought the last pope i saw was pope john the 23rd when i was only 14 years old. >> it's going to one of the most spiritually up lifting emotional moments in my life to be honest. i've never met a man so humble and been able to touch so many souls and spirits in such an easy way. >> reporter: those are three stories you add in aretha franklin and andrea bocelli that makes quite a night. both came from encore performances. david spunt, jessica and ukee we'll zen it back to you on this great night. >> david, thank you very much. three great stories. fortunately the weather didn't become a major story today. >> it was nice today. the sun peek out from the clouds couple of times. i'd say we were pretty lucky. very lucky indeed. >> let's get to kate with more on the weather. >> not too hot, not too cool certainly through the daylight hours once the sun went down still with that cool breeze from the northeast it felt chilly still we're 28 floors up high above the parkway and you can really feel the breeze right now definitely a night you want to grab a jacket, a sweater maybe even a scarf. there's certainly certainly hint of fall in the air but definitely better than sweltering 90-degree heat while waiting in line through security checkpoint or staning on the parkway wait greet the pope. our coastal storm we've been talking about looked very threatening yesterday. now you can see that storm pretty much fallen a part. a big dome of high pressure has really come on in and it's just shouldered that storm outweigh. like the pope bubble of high pressure that has kept us protected showers have fizzled even off to the south. now temperatures with skies that are partly clue deed right now temps have dropped. we're talking about temperatures in the low 60s and the 50s at the moment. it's 53 in mount pocono. 58 degrees in trenton. and 61 in millville. so as we go through the next couple of days, we do still have the chance for few sprinkles. now i think most of the moisture will miss us through the day tomorrow. with that being said, in the afternoon, right around the time of the papal mass, still can't rule out few tiny sprinkles i don't think it's a big deal you could probably lead the bulk of the rain gear at home. brief a hood. monday steadier rain. tuesday, still the chance for a shower and it stays unsettled movely cloudy an bit warmer and humid with high around 80. now we've been telling you about this super eclipse. we'll tell are how about that in just a moment. you can see our future rain amounts we get that burst the of heavier rain monday night. this model is predicting over an inch of rain in philadelphia but most of that now falling on monday instead of sunday. we've push it a day which is great news. the question will skies clear enough tomorrow night to see the super lunar eclipse. super moon it's going to look very very vibrant and beautiful there's also a total lunar eclipse that begins at 10:11 p.m. this is the last time for 18 years they'll ab super lunar eclipse hopefully skies will let usie it. quick look at our future cloud model showing the clouds starting to move in through the day sunday again we will see the threat for few clouds around maybe we'll see that eclipse we'll have to keep an eye on it. hour by hour through your sunday still the chance for sprinkle but mostly it's just a cloudy breezy cool day. your "eyewitness weather" seven day forecast, again, we do have the chance for showers especially monday. watch for that period of heavier rain late monday. still shower tuesday. by the end of the [snoring.] take the roar out of snore. yet another innovation only at a sleep number store. ♪ back now on "eyewitness news" our live coverage of the pope in philadelphia continues. this is a live look at the ben franklin parkway where earlier this evening pope francis addressed the festival of families. a scene life on cbs3 it was a day of history-making moments. the pontiff landed in philadelphia from new york just before 10:00 o'clock this morning after decenting from the plane as the rocky theme. that was wonderful. >> that was great. >> the rocky theme played. pope francis stopped his motorcade a little later and blessed 10-year-old michael keating who suffers from cerebrally palsy. that was moment everyone just stopped watched a tear from so many eyes that was a very very special moment. >> and from there it was on to the basilica but before he arrived a viewer caught the pope's motorcade passing right by our studios. he arrived at the cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul. mass began at 10:40 and powerful images. pope's first stop on his visit to physical. then after the mass, the holy father proceeded to saint charles borromeo seminary in wynnewood. that's where he will be resting during his time in philadelphia. he does need a little rest. >> yes, indeed. >> seminary was renovat renovats summer to make sure the pontiff will be comfortable during his stay he join the seminarians in syncing happy birthday to archbishop chaput. >> happy birthday. >> before 5:00 o'clock our first images of the pope in the pope mobile as he arrived at independence hall. to address the faithful. thousands of people packed the mall for hours today to make sure they got a good seat to see the pontiff speak. holy father spoke about religious freedom and immigration. >> just after 7:00 o'clock tonight the first of two papal parades on the ben franklin parkway pope francis waived to thousands along the route. then as the philadelphia orchestra the world renowned philadelphia orchestra played, the pontiff stepped on to the stage at the festival of families. he delivered a message of brotherly love and sisterly affection to wrap up a historic night in the city of philadelphia. wow. what day. what a day. thank you so much for being with us tonight. it's been something special. i'm ukee washington. >> i'm jessica dean. thank you for being with us this evening. we've been thrilled to be with you all afternoon and evening long and we're glad to still have you with us tonight we're wrapping up emotional day for lot of people a fun day for lot of people. big day i think you can sum it up in that way certainly the religious highlight for so many people was the mass that was celebrated this morning. it was the first big thing the pope did when he got here at the cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul. >> the pope had a taylor made message for the city of philadelphia and our pat chiarocchi has that story. >> reporter: cheers could be heard for blocks outside the cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul as pope francis waved and stepped inside. ♪ >> reporter: inside, as the organ played and choir sank, the crowd lifted dozens of smart phones to capture this powerful moment in philadelphia catholic history. ♪ >> reporter:
