disbelief. a neighborhood rocked by an apparent murder/suicide. the weapon believed to be a chain saw. this story is still developing as we join you tonight. good evening i'm jessica dean. >> i'm chris may. it was teenager who police say found his parents bodies inside their home on country lane in lower moreland. tonight "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco has new details in a case that has left this community stunned. >> it's awful. shocked. disbelief. >> reporter: medical examiner leaves the country lane home where a 43-year-old woman and her 48-year-old husband were found dead by their oldest son who investigators say walked in op a gruesome scene just before 1:00 tuesday afternoon. >> they were both found by 14-year-old child. search warrant being conducted right now with our forensic unit unit. they are on scene. it is a bloody soon. >> reporter: a chain saw was found near the bodies both husband and wife were suffering from lacerations. police now guard the driveway hours after the horrifying discovery. neighbors and friends embraceing in disbelief the couple's three children have lost both parents. in what investigators say appears to be a murder/suicide the husband owns a huntington excavateing business. >> really really hard worker working kind of guy. we all new in the circle friends they had their difficulties. but, um, you know, for this -- it to come to this. >> neighbors and friends say the couple had a rocky relationship both growing up in lower moreland. recently they were having problems. >> they seemed normal, happy always waving and everything was fine. whatever they went through was their own personal business. >> really kind. nice both of them, chris too. nice nice people. solid of the earth people. >> the cathedral has been holding a vigil for this family and their children were neighbors and community members can go to grow. went the medical examiner will conduct an autopsy on the bodies to determine the exact cause of death. i'm diana rocco cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> also tonight a local firehouse becomes the scene of a hostage situation. some tense moments as the swat team moves in hoping to get a former firefighter to surrender. we've got new details about that man who was taken into custody by police. he's identified as paul jordan and police say jordan is a recently fired firefighter who had begun and a grudge. >> "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt is live at the firehouse in elkins park with some reaction from one of the hostage's families. david. >> reporter: chris 25-year-old is behind bars right now and that's exactly where he should be according to the mother of one of the hostages. all four hostages are at home tonight. the mother says that this could have gone terribly wrong. >> well, when i first got the call, he said mom i'm okay. i'm safe. >> reporter: alice robinson is still shocked after she found out her son a u.s. marine was one of the hostage hell at gun point inside the lamot fire department. >> like scared me. shook me up. shook her up. and we couldn't get up there fast enough. >> reporter: our cameras were rolling as alice's sonja mal robinson calmly walked to safety he was handcuffed as precaution. we also spoke to jamal's fiance' fiance'. >> to go this -- to the extreme like this, you know, is devastating on everybody behalf. >> jamal's former colleague paul jordan held jamal and three others in the basement. jordan work at the department but was recently let go. we spoke to a woman who said she's friends with jordan. >> i can't believe he did it. like, i can't. it's nothing that i would say -- even thought he did it because -- i don't think he would be able to do something like that. >> detectives say jordan had a loaded handgun and fired a shot into the wall. minutes later he surrendered. we stopped by his house to see if anyone was home. no answer. but we did find his sister at another location. she claimed to not know about the incident and shut the door. >> no comment. >> reporter: "eyewitness news" has learned jordan worked for the salvation army and is currently employed as a manager with the philadelphia housing authority. he also listed the us army under work history on his facebook page. >> just glad everybody was safe. i'm glad nobody got hurt and the gunman didn't shoot nobody. >> reporter: a pentagon spokesman told me tonight that paul jordan never served in the united states army. i reached out to several times to the pennsylvania national guard to see if he possibly served there. i have not heard back. we are live in elkins park david spunt cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> david, thank you so much. car slams through a nail salon killing a woman who was waiting to be picked up by her daughter. this accident happened today on the 9800 block of bustleton avenue. police say the 82-year-old driver pulled into a parking spot and when a item to go stop, hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. two other people were injured. the driver is not expected to be charged. now back in february, "eyewitness news" investigated the alarming frequency storefront crashes like the one that happened today. the volunteer storefront safety down sill found media reports of 6,000 storefront crashes for the years 2013 and 2014. council estimates the real number of crashes is more than triple that number. concrete pillars known as bollards can stop a car from plowing through the front of a business but not all businesses have them in place. the girlfriend of a darby borough police officer who was shot and killed at home is now charged with his murder. this is exclusive video of firm as she was escorted from her court appearance today. authorities say that firm gave police two bogus stories about what happened in the glenn olden home that she shared with officer mark hudson. first, claiming saturday's shooting was an accident and then saying that she feared for her safety during a domestic dispute. if she's convicted firm faces live in prison. >> well new at 11:00 o'clock tonight a man dies in the custody of vineland police. now his family and members of the community are demanding answers. "eyewitness news" reporter todd quinones is live at the vineland pd with more on the moments that led to this man's death. todd? >> reporter: chris tonight off camera eyewitness tells me there was a confrontation with police and recorded scan traffic indicates the officer believed the man was trying to grab his gun. >> don't grab my begun! >> on the 100 block of west graves street in a vigil marks a spot where the confrontation with police ended. philip white a father of thee hudson indications are white was up armed when he died in police custody tuesday. >> how did he die in police custody with the vineland police department. >> vineland police are calling this an in custody non shooting death. but what led to white's death isn't exactly clear. a man i spoke with says he saw the altercation unfold just before 1:00 in the afternoon. he tells me white was stumbling around the neighbor's fence an officer pulled up and asked white if he needed medical at its assistance. >> he started freaking out. started getting crazy yelling. he through around house kick, and he missed the officer and the officer obviously tackled him. >> he says the officer tackled white and then the officer's partner and a police k9 subdued him. >> he didn't want to listen. so they were telling him put your hands behind your back. put your hands behind your back. they were mushing his head to the floor. >> white's mom is too distraught to speak publicly but she wants answers. >> very hard-working woman and things like that and it's very painful to get a phone call that, you know, your son is dead. >> vial vape land police chief released a statement in reads which part our sincere thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased and with the officers involved i asked that everyone allow time for our justice system to navigate this matter to its truthful conclusion. >> reporter: the chief says the police department is cooperating with the prosecutor's office which is investigating this death. the eyewitness tells me that it appears the -- it believes white was still alive when he was taken away by ambulance. right now his official cause of death is not clear. reporting live tonight from 59 lapped, new jersey, todd quinones cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> todd, thank you. police vehicles in gloucester county must now use lights and sirens when exceeding a road's posted speed limit by more than 20 miles an hour. this new policy comes three months after a franklin township patrol car hit and killed 10-year-old matthew mccloskey. the patrol car was responding to a non-emergency call at 74 miles an hour. its flashers and siren were not activated. tonight sources tell cbs news new jersey senator robert menendez could be indicted on federal corruption charges as soon as tomorrow. the charges are expected to relate to his dealings with a donor and friend florida based ophthalmologist solomon minute gin when word of a possible indictment leak last night he denied any wrongdoing. also in new jersey -- >> governor chris christie and hecklers facing off during his latest town hall meeting. they channeled arrest christie and held up blew toy handcuffs. he has been holding weekly town hall meeting across the state to promote his pension reform plan. >> also tonight in philadelphia we have got a shocking attack that was caught on camera. >> take look at shocking knock out on a septa platform. a young man took a swing at a 60-year-old breaking his jaw. tonight police have released that surveillance video. they're hoping that you can help them find the suspect. >> this is one of those sad circumstances where verbal altercation turns into a physical dispute where one or the other should have walked away. this shouldn't have happened. >> well this the young man in the blue hoodie on the train you see him engaged in a conversation with the victim they were on their way to center city philadelphia and then that punch happened on the 15th street platform. if you recognize that man you're asked to contact septa police. now to a three on your side consumer alert. it can be a fast and high tech way to make some extra cash. apps offered to pay you for doing simple things things. what are you risking for those extra bucks. look at what jim donovan uncovered isn't from up loading pictures of her grocery receipts for cash to watching videos on her phone to earn gift cards nicole mcdonald says she makes about a thousand bucks a year using money making apps. >> i like using apps that pay me cash rewards because it's a super easy way to get extra income. >> receipt hog the one nicole uses to up load sales slips they pay her to take short surveys. the shop kick app rewards you with gift cards when you visit recommended stores, scan items and buy products. with up load photos and if they're like by another user you can earn money. and apps like cash pirate pay you to play games. but cyber security expert gary, finds some apps could be cashing in on your privacy too. he reviewed some of the top money making apps and found buried deep in the fine print some modify or delete couldn't tens of u.s. b storage of the download files without notification and take pictures and vitter yo and even record audio. >> i think the behavior in most of these rewards apps is creepy and inappropriate. yes, they need to monetize you and ensure you're located where you say you are but they're collecting way too much information. >> reporter: experts say if you're going to use a money making app review its privacy policy and what information the app accesses. and don't download any app that pops up as a link in a text message. >> for the most part, these apps are fairly safe. if you download them from the i tunes store or google play store, you have a few more built in security measures. >> reporter: nicole has never had a prob hem with her money making apps and she's fine trading some of her privacy for a little extra cash. >> i don't think that you can make a living off of the apps but i think it supplements your income very well. >> reporter: some apps transfer payment to you via pay pal. others send e gift cards and others science fair. more than 100 students took part part. that were more than 80 project as lot to look at the kids put so much work into these projects and they all got really positive feedback. of course i was there checking it out. i was so impressed with what i saw. these projects are amazeing this young fellow found that instead of using eggs you can substitute it with flaxseed if you're allergic. a great metallic project with magnets and this little girl had gate little slingshot there. these fellas were using food to power clocks. >> brilliant. >> this fella had a great experiment as well. and look. snow hopefully has accumulated for the last time but it went where we want it in the poconos. lake harmony 4-inches. saylorsburg, 3-inches. heidelberg 1 inch. martins creek that's in northampton county half an inch and the lehigh valley airport about .4-inch of snow. we're looking at warmer days ahead as we begin the month of april. but let's take a look at the long cold winter. these are the temperatures. november nearly 2.5 degrees below average. december was a warm month. we were actually above normal. but january 2 degrees below normal. february nearly 10 degrees below normal. you know six many colder ever and march end up four-point thee degrees below average. so as nature seeks a balance i do think that spring or the summer is going to be on the hot side. we need several months to count act that cold. right now in philadelphia, 39 degrees. in millville 41. poconos already down to 29 but look at the warm to the south. 66 in nashville. atlanta 62. birmingham 62. and these are nighttime temperatures. so the only place that's really cold is where we have this high pressure system sitting and that's through the great lakes the midwest and through the northeast. but eventually this warmth will be lifting our way it's not going to happen tomorrow. we have that cold high over us. it will be breezy and chilly with temperatures in the 50s. but then a warm front sneaks up from the southwest thursday will be windy. gusts 30, 35 miles an hour but we make it into the 60 if's you like that we're in the warm sector friday in the area between warm front that has passed approaching cold front that will squeeze all of that warm air up the coastal plains. it will be very warm. it will be wet and very windy. we could make it to advisory criteria by late friday with gusts to 40, 45, even 50 miles an hour. we'll keep an eye on that. temperatures in the 60s in some spots possibly making it to 70 degrees. overnight 34 breezy conditions. tomorrow will be brisk the high temperature 52 but mentee of sunshine and as we look ahead on the exclusive "eyewitness weather" seven day forecast windy for thursday. and for friday of course good friday the high near 70. sundown when we do see passover begin we'll have showery weather weather. saturday 57. easter sunday 55. the phils home opener on monday 54. and tuesday look for some showers the temperature 60
