jessica dean. ed snider was known first and for most as the moon brought the flyers to physical. native of washington, d.c. he first came to the city in 1964 to become a part owner of the philadelphia eagles. snider quickly became aware of philadelphia's passion for sports. he spearheaded the effort to bring ice hockey to town and was successful in 1966. snider created the spectrum and founded the sports and entertainment powerhouse spectacore. he had a hand in creating sports radio 610 wip and the regional cable network prism. snider endured a two-year battle with bladder cancer and died today at the age of 83. he survived by his wife, six children and 15 grandchildren. >> the snider family issued a statement that reads in part "our dad was loved for his big heart, generosity of spirit and dedication to his family. we are grateful for the outpouring of love from the community, his friends, and all those who were fortunate to have been touched by him in some way, large or small ". one of the men fortunate enough to become close to mr. snider long lifetime pliers public address lou nolan had has been the voice sin the 1970s. nolan spoke about the loss of his friend and said that bringing hockey to philadelphia wasn't exactly a sure bet. >> it wasn't really a fan base for it but ed recognized it having seen in other cities what it would do and having been to madison square garden and seeing what it was like there and said he thought he would make a go of it here in philadelphia because he had a feel for the fact it was great sport city. he had been with the eagles and saw what happened there in the nfl. and said that we were ready for it here and i'm sure glad he did. he meant a lot to me. >> that he did. mr. snider will have lasting impact on so many ways but the flyers always held a special place in his heart. >> you see sports director don bell joining us with how the team is reactioning to this loss. >> right now i think people don't want to marinate really want to celebrate what ed snider not only meant to the team but also to the city. when people talk about ed snider one word always comes to mind, passion. his glass wasn't half full with it. it overflowed and that's just one of many reasons why snider was beloved in many town. snider's flyers won back to back stanley cup titles in '74 and '75. he was the catalyst behind the broad street bullies. he refused to have a team that played soft and pass tiff hock hockey. he was in the you will hockey of hall of fame. the flyers are preparing for their play off series against washington. before snider passed he hosted the team at his california home. his passion for the team was strong even then. >> you know as a player he cares deeply about the uniform, about the logo, but he cared about you as an individual and he cared about your family. >> it's not going to be easy against a good team, but we know he'll be watching and he'll be -- he'll be cheering us on. >> i know there's nothing else that he wanted to see more than the flyers to win another stanley cup. that's definitely our goal and we'll go out there and strive to bring the cup back to philly. >> coming up in minutes. more than 39,000 east coast verizon land line phone and cable workers could go on strike on wednesday. members of the international brotherhood of electrical workers and the communications workers of america have been without a contract since august between 15. union leaders say verizon wants to freeze pensions, make layoffs easier recent lie more on contract workers. verizon says it's be no strike but that it has trained non-union employees to fill in if a strike occurs. philadelphia police want to you take look at this video. the search is now on for these suspect who's stole $64,000 in cigarettes. they got into a business on hunting park avenue by using a ladder and then prying open a rear door. once they got inside they used that ladder to reach unnamed cases of cigarettes and they just wheeled them right out the door. it happened friday night around 3:00 in the morning. you're asked to call police if you have any information. there are more water safety concerns tonight. elevated levels of lead have surfaced at two elementary schools in hamilton, mers is he county. several contaminated samples at the william b. morgan elementary school caused officials to turn off all the water moutains prone vied bottled water to students and staff. food preparation was also moved off sight. and one water mountain has been shut off at greenwood elementa elementary. right now there's no word on how many of the 24 schools in the district have been tested. a judge ruled state of new jersey can seize ocean front land for protective dune project in margate. this is the second major ruling in favor of the state department of environmental protection. it it's trying assemble strips of privately owned land along the coast to build dunes mitt gag flooding and storm damage. margate says it's wooden bulkhead is sufficient to protect it from storms. it sued the state to block dun dunes. tis the season baseball is back in south philly and the fans the virus can result in miscarriages, premature burnings and blindness in newborns. zika is also likely to be a problem during the entire length of pregnancy not just the first trimester. the cdc says the mosquito that carries the virus can be found in 30 states not just 12 as originally thought. emergency zika funding has yet to be approved by congress so funds left over from the i bowl la fight will be diverted for now. a big win for one of the big spots down the shore. ocean city, new jersey, is named best beach in america. that's according to travel and lifestyle magazine coastal living. the shore town beat out huntington beach california with over 100,000 votes in marinadeness style bracket. nearly 2,000 students battered up recently for competition at widener university in delaware
