township a free tree fell on to a home. two people were inside but not hurt. down trees and power lines are leaving thousand in the dark tonight. it's been a wild night of weather and it's not over yet. good evening, i'm ukee washington. >> i'm jessica dean. a live look now at conditions from the mobile weather lab as it drives around center city. we've live team coverage for you tonight. we begin with meteorologist kate bilo with a look at what's happening right now. kate. >> the good news the storms are starting to wind down much the bad news they've left a loft damage in their wake an lot of rainfall as well leading to the risk now for flash flooding. you can see the storms really kind of changed course here for a bit. they were coming in pretty due west to east all night. then as they moved toward philadelphia the progress of this line slowed down a little bit. we started to see more of a almost due south to north progression of these storm which meant heavy rain moved across the same area for an extended peer of time that's what led to the risk for flash flooding. i want to call your attention what's happening behind the system. a few showers moving into central pennsylvania most of those will miss out. i can't rule out a stray shower tomorrow morning. the shore missed most of the brunt of the action today. finally now starting to see few storms lining up over atlantic city, portions of again atlantic county, cape may county and central and southern new jersey quiet for now she's showers across southern delaware could move into your region. we're not meetly out of the woods yet the threat for severe weather is dying down the risk for flooding does continue. storm scan3 showing very heavy rain just east of philadelphia right now. you can see right here actually put my pint point near moorestown and this is estimat estimating pre paper situation rates in that cell of 2.74-inches per hour. you can see why flash flood warnings have been issue. take a look. extending from portions of kent county delaware all the way to mercer county, philadelphia, deptford, smyrna and dover and flash flood warning for the lehigh valley. bethlehem 378 southbound closed between third and eighth streets due to stranded votes and a nash flood. just quick recap of storm dama damage. trees down and power outages roared in mt. laurel there's that major flooding in bethlehem vineland tree fell into a pre-school luck follow children were there. large tree on house in wynnefield second of the stow in bucks county water rescues 3 feet of water on the roads high water rescues were underway it has been a crazy night i have much more on what these storms will do later tonight want to expect behind the storms coming up. jessica, back to you. if kate, check back in with. some are without power tonight thanks to this latest round of severe weather. peco has more than 27,000 homes and businesses in the dark. ps and e begun nearly 10,000 much atlantic city electric reporting more than 13,000 outages and delmarva has more than 700. "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt is live in philadelphia's lawn crest neighborhood where there was damage from this sto storm. >> reporter: strong winds took down this burger king sign on rising sun in lawn crest as people ate inside. >> i was actually on lunch and the guys were in the back. when it came down all we heard is it hard. >> jonathan rodriguez and members of his team ran outside to check out the damage. >> it is crazy. i expected it to go through the roof. there was people under there but actually it hold on and people was safe. everybody was safe. >> reporter: powerful winds took down trees and left a few thousand without power. neighbors in springfield, delaware county spent hours in the dark. >> real loud. like the whole house kind of shook a little bit. >> reporter: pj mcdevitt was and side when he lost power and went outside to find this power pole on fire. thanks to blown transformer. springfield resident bill was home when sparks started coming out of his dash washer he blames a power surge. >> noise was so loud. it was bang, bang. what -- i want out here figuring somebody broke into the house. >> reporter: i heard many similar concerns jessica and ukee from neighbors about those power surges. in lawn crest right now this is the current situation live for this burger king. thank god nobody was inside. that was hurt when they were eating dinner. i do want to say i poke spoke to power officials tonight they expect the outages to last few more hours for people. crews will be out here tomorrow to fix this sign behind me. the good news nobody hurt. damage down south. three people were killed in virginia and power there was knocked out to tens of thousands of homes and businesses. yesterday the system spawned about two dozen tornadoesing the gulf coast. three people were killed there. dozens were injured. new tonight early results from a research project finding a surprisingly high number of undetected brain tumors. one of the patients discovered he had a tumor after watching a story here on cbs3. health reporter instead of know stall tells you how the one decision he made helped save his life. cheers to help and happiness and adventures. >> reporter: janet is cooking all kinds goodies for her boyfriend john helping him recover from brain surgery. >> it's a little tender but it's healing very well. >> john 63 had no symptoms and what in great shape an experienced scuba diver and instructor, volunteer firefighter and adventure traveler. >> i was totally shock. >> a million people are living with brain tumors. >> john was watching cbs3 back in october and saw our story on mobile mri unit offering free screenings in several cities as part of a columbia research project sponsored by the brine tumor foundation. >> i saw the mobile unit there so i strolled over, and the rest is history. >> follow up testing revealed a sizeable tumor that was potentially life-threatening. it was successfully removed during a 14-hour operation february 3rd. >> prognosis is very good. >> we are beyond grateful to "eyewitness news" for airing the segment. >> janet wrote a letter to let us know how our story started the process that saved john's life. >> cbs3 i love you for making that decision. that's all i can say. i'm italian i love you for that. thank you very much. >> john was among 343 people scanned in that mobile unit and problems were found in 15. a number of higher than expec expected. final result of the study are expected soon. we'll get a better idea of how many people might have undetec undetected brain tumors and what should be done. i'm stephanie stahl cbs3 "eyewitness news". well today pennsylvania governor tom wolf reveal he's battling prostate cancer. at a press conference wolf was optimistic and says his cancer is treatable. wolf tells "eyewitness news" doctors found the cancer during a routine checkup. the sketch-year-old stresses this will not impact his job as governor. he wants the diagnosis to help teach other men about the importance of early testing. >> make sure that this is an example of why routine checkups actually matter and make a difference. >> we have great courage and feel all right, feel more than hopeful. >> governor wolf' treatment for prostate cancer will start in the coming weeks and should last few months. one of the off duty police officers injured in the nightclub brawl allegedly involving former e guilty lesean mccoy is speaking out through his attorney. officer darnell jesse suffered facial bone fractures and other injuries at recess lounge early super bowl sunday. police reports say mccoy punched and kicked the officer during an argument over who owned a bot toll of champagne. officer jesse's attorney is not concerned that mccoy met with authorities last night. >> we've consistently said all along we're very confident at the conclusion of this investigation the district attorney's office will charge whoever is responsible for this vicious beating. >> we have reached out to both of mccoy' attorneys tonight for comment but our calls were not return. february is black history month and tonight our sister radio station kyw news radio 1020 paid tribute to some changing the game for the african-american community in greater philadelphia. the game changer reception was hell at the cbs broadcast center in spring garden. all january long kyw news radio and cbs philly received nearly 200 game changer nominations. committee met and chose 10 to be recognized for their out staning contribution. their stories are being featured on kyw news radio and cbsphilly.com all month long. we congratulate you. as we celebrate black history month we reflect on how much the civil rights leaders of the past help to shape our future. so why do we celebrate black history month if february? it's a good question. and our nicole brewer is here with the answer. why this month, nicole. >> ukee and jess, it was actually a group of african-american students who demanded to know more about their heritage so much of it was kept out of the of american history books early on. now, today the idea is to continue that conversation. taking black history out of the classroom and into the communi community. so we wondered why is black history month in february? it's a good question and we didn't go far to fine the answer. ♪ any idea why we celebrate black history month in february? >> i'm not too sure. >> martin hutted king. >> i wish i paid more attention in history class. >> why do we celebrate black history in february? >> because of two important birth dates. >> dr. diane turner cure yates the charles block african-american collect at temple university. she says it was created in 1925 by carter g. woodson the father of black history. >> he picked february because it is the birth month of two of his heroes abraham lincoln and frederick douglas. >> was it always a month. >> turner says it started as negro history week but became black history month in 1976. >> 1976. >> any idea why it went from a week to month? >> no. i don't. >> it should be celebrated 365 really. >> there was a civil rights struggle and then black power. >> then as part of the united states bicentennial president gerald ford urged the country to honor the often neglected history of black americans. here in philadelphia plenty of african-americans did their part. bishop richard allen for example founded the first african methodist episcopal church in 1794. he was recently picture on stamp as part the black heritage series. >> nice. i feel like we're in history class. >> one of the most prolific african-american writers publish the philadelphia nedro a social study in 1899 the first schola scholarly study on race in an urban area. served as conduct outturned ground railroad. >> guess where she lived. >> bainbridge street. >> are you serious. >> wonderful. >> i feel really proud to be from philly right now. >> there has been some debate over whether or not that should be a designated month to celebrate african-american history. in fact morgan freeman has been quote the as saying i don't want black history month. black history is american history. so little bit of a debate there. anything that educates people. >> right and really cause us to appreciate the accomplishments of these people. >> 12 months all year long. >> absolutely. >> so much history here in philadelphia. >> exactly. >> i just loved hearing about those few individuals and so many more. >> the 76 year the year i garaged from high school, did thunder, rain, moving through. it was very quiet the storm slowed down a little bit and then root about 9:45 at night, got within that six to 10 window the storm making me sweat a little bit we got there 9:45 came through the city and still dealing witness after effects from line of thunderstorm. luckily no tornado warning here local. one in lancaster county. possibly some damage. we'll take you outside this is our spring garden cam looking at life spring garden and broad street. things are looking okay. the roads are certainly wet. it doesn't look like they're flooded right there. we have just gotten reports in from the schuylkill the schuylkill eastbound into the city from the western suburbs just a mess. flooding there. very very slow travel so if you're heading out tonight, hopefully you're not. i would avoid it if you can but the schuylkill looks like a mess heading into the city of philadelphia. let's take look at corm scan three. you can see right now most of this is starting to move out. we still have few pockets to talk about much this one storm over mercer county an few strong storms down the shore as well, filling back in over delaware. i don't expect anything severe her but another round of showers could fill in over portions of southern new jersey so spots like vineland and millville could see another shower or thunderstorm before this is all said and done. but thing are certainly winding down for philadelphia. that is good news. we don't need any more rape. we got our fair share of it. you can see this line of showers and storms right down the coast and into portions of southern delaware. do want to zoom in on one spot just north of philadelphia right up toward moorestown into bucks county this is starling start to lift up near trenton a severe thunderstorm warning for that particular cell. moving away quickly that's good news leaving light rain in its quake but crewing trenton, bordentown, lawrence and mercer county ins severe thunderstorm warning for the next 25 minutes or so. recapping your flash flood warnings for philadelphia right along that core don and also for the lehigh valley. allentown, easton, bethlehem and nazareth in that zone. take a look how much rain fell over the past 24 hours much this pock right here that's what we're focusing in on that corridor. two plus inches of rain over central and northern delaware. into salem and comer land counties and toward the city of philadelphia and this came down very quickly. that's why it did cause the risk for flash flooding. overnight we start to see the storms push out. maybe a shower tomorrow morning don't be shocked if you wake up to a stray shower that's all it is. we'll see sun later in the day possibly even a snow shower in the poconos. temperatures still very mild right now at 63 degrees in philadelphia. but temps will drop and the winds are still very strong tomorrow gusts over 35 miles an hour and that will continue right no tomorrow afternoon. so still a blustery day. the cold air will come in especially by friday and the winds stay strong. so still dealing with a few gusty thunderstorms overnight. they will start to taper off overnight. tomorrow is dry. besides possibly that morning shower it's blustery at 53. your "eyewitness weather" seven day forecast here come the cold behind that storm. look at friday and saturday. chilly in the low 40s with sunshine each day. then sunday, that's the ticket. that's the day to look forward to. 56 degrees. sunshine, doesn't get much better than this for the sector to
