what did you want to put into the world? >> i never think of it in terms of like i want to cover this and this and this or -- something we do that's maybe smart, oh, hello, you caught me. it's more organic. i just go out on stage and i just talk about what's been on my mind or little notes i've written down to see if there's anything there. a lot of it fails, you know. then some of it works. and then i build on that. >> it's been a long road. >> i think comedy specials are kind of like sand castles. you build it and you build it and you hone it and you work on it and you make it perfect and then the tide washes it away and you start over. >> it's perfect. ♪ >> we ask you for your protection over us and we pray we will be kept from harm throughout the night. >> miss martha. miss martha! >> is he dead? >> no. get him inside. >> quick. >> many intriguing elements drew a top-notch cast for the civil war drama "the beguiled." >> sophia e-mailed me and said, i've kind of decided what my next movie's going to be and she sent me the script and she said kirsten's going to play edwina and i want to get nicole for miss martha and would you like to play alicia. automatically you say yes. sophia and i did "somewhere together" when i was 11. that movie was a big opportunity that she gave me. it was just very special kind of moment in my life. and we became very close on that set and remained friends, which is so nice when that happens. we were trying to find another movie to do together. and she wanted to make me the bad girl. >> you're a most unwelcome visitor. and we do not propose to entertain you. >> you'll find them easily amused. >> you won't be here long enough for that. >> if you had anything in the world, what would it be? >> to be taken far away from here. >> come with me. >> john? >> when the movie starts before meg birney comes into play it's very monotonous, their lives in this house of being very stifled and just confined but also there are cannons that you hear in the background. it's a very scary time, and their emotions are already -- i think there are tensions like something was going to explode at some point and it just happened to be that he shows up, who's also the enemy. he's the union soldier. they don't know if they can trust him or not trust him. and he's kind of playing them but they're definitely playing him. >> it seems the enemy is not what we believe. i hope you like apple pie. >> is that my recipe? >> it is. >> and for those actors returning to a sophia coppola production there was a sense of great creativity and confidence. >> she's unlike anybody else. she has a certain sensibility and certain taste, very particular about her style and what she likes. i do think people try to recreate her style of moviemaking and you just can't do it. like it's only sophia can do her style and tell the stories she wants to tell in the way that she tells them. >> i need rag. i need chloroform. go to the smoke house, get the saw. now. >> they're so beautiful costume and set design and the color palette. >> can i get you anything?
