>> a fly to deep left field and the ball game is over. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. hurricane matthew is now expected to be very close to florida's atlantic coast by tomorrow night. the hurricane warning area there has been expanded. this morning matthew is a category 3 storm with winds of 125 miles per hour. the storm center has moved off the coast of cuba after making landfall there last night. at least 11 deaths are blamed on the storm, most in hard-hit haiti and neighboring dominican republic. 145-mile-per-hour winds slam the eyelid. floodwaters and mudslides caused extensive damage and roads are impassible and a key bridge was washed out. >> everything is gone. like just like that. i can tell you this exactly uchlt the u.n. says this is the largest humanitarian disaster in haiti since the devastating earthquake six years ago. matthew will be moving across the bahamas tomorrow. eric fisher, chief meteorologist at our boston station wbz is following matthew. >> reporter: matthew remains a dangerous hurricane and likely reintensifies. we head into wednesday and thursday as it moves into the bahamas an area that is very favorable for development. i want to show you a couple of major models and take this off toward the west the next couple of days. it comes across the bahamas as a very dangerous hurricane and remain a category 3 or 4. late thursday, it reaches the coast of florida and moves up along it and it may stay just offshore and if that is the case the energy source the warm ocean waters and continue to follow the shape of the coastline and up the georgia and south carolina coast and on saturday into sunday it moves more north and east and more uncertainty as we head toward the weekend. some guidance keeping it farther off to the south and slower moving storm is more trouble or one that moves farther out to sea. at this point it looks like any impact to the northeast is looking low, if any at all. very likely across the bahamas for wednesday and thursday as this travels off to the nust. a chance for hurricane winds to get into florida by thursdays evening and glide up the coastline. still to be determined if the strong winds get on shore or not and watch whether the heaviest rainfall gets on shore or not. right now it looks like the heaviest totals are along the coastline. the threat of the heaviest rain is close to the shore and rain totals will drop off dramatically as you move toward the west. waves over 20 feet will be offshore late this week. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. in florida, the forecast triggered a run on emergency supplies, food and gas. lines at some stations as residents prepared for the worse. >> you're sitting in the dark, the wind bashing against you you got to be ready for it, anything. >> florida's coastal residents have been warned to prepare for a direct hit. evacuation order is expected to be issued today in south carolina affecting 1 million people. state of emergency has been declared in 13 coastal georgia counties. a mandatory evacuation order is expected for residents along north carolina's coast tomorrow. and some airlines are allowing passengers to change travel plans to affected areas without penalty. the one and only vice presidential debate of 2016 turned out to be sometimes a contentious and sometimes aggressive affair but in the end it was mostly about tim kaine's and mike pence's running mates. krig b craig bosworth is in florida. >> reporter: the goal for the candidates was the start. for tim kaine continuing hillary clinton's momentum and continually go on the attack and aim above mike pence and aim for donald trump. for mike pence the goal was to defend donald trump and establish clear lines of attack for the next presidential debate. tim kaine and mike pence ended their one and only debate shaking hands, but for much of the night. >> when donald trump shays women should be punished or mexicos are rapists or criminals -- >> senator, we have done that mexican thing again. her private server was subject. >> please, gentlemen! >> they concluded -- >> senator? >> there was no reasonable -- >> senator kaine. >> reporter: repeatedly talking over moderator elaine quijano as they fiercely defended their running mates. >> donald trump supports our troops. donald trump supports or veterans. donald trump has paid all of the taxes he has deemed. >> gentlemen, this is about syria. >> the fiery discussion in farmville was amplified on social media on facebook. one of the most talked about moments was the candidates trading jabs on an insult-driven campaign. >> if donald trump had said all of the things that you said he said in the way you said he said them, he still wouldn't have a fraction of the insults that hillary clinton leveled when she said that half of our supporters were a basket of deplorables. >> he is asking everybody to vote for somebody that he cannot defend. >> reporter: both campaigns claimed victory as soon as the debate ended. >> senator kaine could not stop interrupting governor pence but he couldn't stop interrupting the female dramoderator. >> it was time to change a very bad week for donald trump. that didn't happen. >> reporter: trump and clinton meet face-to-face for their second presidential debate this sunday in st. louis. >> that next debate will be a town hall format. most believe that is a better environment for donald trump who can feed off of the energy of an audience. >> craig boswell in farmville, virginia, thank you so much, craig. today, clinton holds a private event in d.c. while trump campaigns in nevada. tim kaine was certainly the aggressor in last night's face-off. john dickerson has more on that. >> tim kaine seemed so focused on that larger campaign that is going on, pressing the case repeatedly constantly, constantly, to the point of basically losing on style points. there is no question in terms of demeanor and behavior and the constant interruptions and trying to press governor pence to stand up for his -- for his running mate. there were a number of times governor pence said donald trump didn't say donald trump did say. the fact checking go on several days after they have actually happened and it was so clear that the strategy from tim kaine was about keeping it all about donald trump and hoping if he lost on style in the moment they might win on the longer debate that goes on after -- >> i think -- >> cbs news political contributor and republican strategist frank luntz talked to undecided ohio voters during the debate. >> this is an important group because ohio is one of the most important states in the country and everyone sitting behind me is either undecided or uncommitted to the candidate that they support. i want you to watch this. how many of you thought donald trump won the first debate? raise your hands. one of you. how many of you thought mike pence won pont? raise your hands. almost all of you. that is remarkable. >> i thought kaine won because kaine focused on the issues that mattered to the inner city and the people like the stop and frisk and all of this other outside of the country like benghazi and like that. trump focused on vladimir putin and russia. >> he is a jerk. i like that guy and i was sfo d disappointed in this time. he kept going back to needling little points and a total jerk! i think he reinforced the worst of hillary. thif he did her a disservice. >> coming up on "cbs this morning" a fact check of last night's debate and a look at the strategies and key moments. in los angeles, demonstrations continued after police released video showing the moments of the deadly shooting of a black teenager saturday. the surveillance video shos 18-year-old carnell snell crouching behind an suv and pulling a handgun from his waistband from his pants. he runs around the corner and chased by police. police officials say snell refused to put the gun down and officers fired six shots. in north carolina, charlotte police released body camera and dashboard recordings showing the moments just before keith scott was fatally shot on september 20th. the video shows scott backing out of an suv. police say he refused the command to put down a gun. police say they recovered a gun but none of the video conclusively shows scott has a gun. his mother says he was caring a koran. yahoo! not denying reports it helped the government spy on millions of its users. reuters reports that yahoo! scanned the incoming e-mails of its user to imply with an order from a u.s. intelligence agency. reuters says yahoo! conducted the survey last year. it's unclear which intelligence agency directed the action or what exactly it was looking for. in a statement, yahoo! described itself as a company that complies with the laws of the united states. in toronto last night, one swing send the orioles back home to baltimore and blue jays fans into ecstasy. >> a drive to deep left field and the ball game is over. >> edwin encarnacion hit an 11th inning walkoff homer. toronto wins the american league wildlife playoff 3-2 and the national league wildcard game is tonight. mayhem at chucky cheeses. adults break out into a bite at the breakout game. and the vice president goes undercover at a college for some laughs. >> are you ready, mr. vice president?
