there is new fallout over an impromptu meeting between bill clinton and loretta lynch. the meeting has prompted calls for an independent prosecutor to handle the e-mail probe. hena daniels is here in new york. >> good morning. while attorney general loretta lynch says the topic of the private e-mail server never came up she is being called to. many are questioning the timing of this chat as the doj is the middle of investigating his wife. >> reporter: at a facebook event in california thursday, attorney general loretta lynch continued to deflect questions had he ever owner private meeting with bill clinton in phoenix. >> i was arriving, he was leaving. he came on to say hoe. we spoke about a number of things. not much more to it than that. >> reporter: the half hour encounter on board lynch's plane came as the fbi nears the end of its investigation into hillary pe-mail server during her time s secretary of state. >> no discussion were held on any cases or anything of that and he didn't raise anything. >> reporter: at least one democrat, senator chris kuns of delaware said it sent a wrong messch. jon cornyn said a special council should take over the e-mail investigation. >> she would be such a bad president. >> reporter: presumptive republican nominee donald trump saved his sharpest jabs for clinton herself. >> look at the calls she has made over the years. she has harsh judgment including voting for the war in iraq. >> reporter: she has faced criticism throughout her campaign but a house committee found no new evidence of wrongdoing in response to the 2012 benghazi attacks. >> i think it's pretty clear it's time to move on. >> reporter: lynch is expected to have the final say over whether she will face any charges for using her private e-mail server. white house spokesman josh earnest wouldn't say if the meeting was inappropriate but only that she understand the rule is paramount as did president obama. >> hena daniels in new york, thank you, hena. we will have more on the controversy over bill clinton's meeting with loretta lynch coming up on "cbs this morning." the pentagon has broken down another barrier that prevented some americans from serving their country. as david martin reports, transgender people will now be allowed to serve openly. >> reporter: transgender people were the last service members who could be kicked out nothing for something they had done but simply because of who they were. defense secretary carter ended that today. >> effective immediately, transgender americans can serve openly and no longer discharged or separated from the military just for being transgender. >> reporter: estimates of the number of transgender people in the military range from a low of 4,000 to a high of 11,000 out of a total force of 2 million. army reserve captain sage fox found her career put on hold after she changed genders. even though she says it made her a better officer. >> transitioning has allowed me to be better as a leader. i've gotten rid of the distraction of worrying about concealing whoever i was. >> reporter: fox had to rely on private insurance to cover her surgery. but from now on, the military will cover the costs of sex change operations priced by a doctor. >> our doctors will give them and give them the nelson medical treatment according to the protocols. >> reporter: once a member switches genders they would switch to the bathrooms and showers by their gender. it comes after a year of study when secretary carter met with transgender service members. >> they have served all over the world and right here in the pentagon. >> reporter: the u.s. military is not a world leader when it comes to treating transgender service members equally. 18 other countries already allow them to serve openly in uniform. david martin, cbs news, the pentagon. the mississippi law that would allow denial of services to same-sex couples is blocked by a federal judge. the ruling was issued just moments before the law was to took effect today. the law would have let merchants and government workers cite religious beliefs when refusing to serve same-sex couples. a navy investigation into the capture of ten u.s. sailors by iran in january found poor leadership. it said broken equipment and bad decisions resulted in them straying into iranian waters. nine people ranging from commanders to shore to the sailors who piloted the boats are facing discipline. the government has opened an investigation into tesla model s cars after one in self-driving mode crashed, killing the driver. it is the first u.s. fatality in a wreck involving a car in self-driving mode. joshua brown posted videos of him riding in autopilot mode. he died in may after a crash with an 18-wheeler in florida. tesla cameras airport. on thursday, the death toll rose to 44 victims. now we are learning more about the terrorists, including their nationalities. it comes as turkey arrested nearly two dozen people suspected of having links to isis. holly williams reports from istanbul. >> reporter: the terror inside istanbul's main airport is captured by this newly released security camera video. people running for their lives as one of the armed attackers moves through the departures area. apparently searching for victims. and this photo shows the three suicide bombers arriving at the airport. according to turkish media just before beginning their killing spree. one of them is thought to have been a russian citizen from the north region. the two others from the three attackers are believed to have rented this apartment. in a working class istanbul neighborhood last month. this man is the local plumber and told us when one of the man asked him to fix a leaking tap two days ago, he noticed a strange odor in the apartment. i asked the man what it was, he told us, but he just waved me away. explosive experts believe it might have been a chemical precursor used in suicide vests. more raids rounded up 22 individuals suspected of providing financial and logistical help to isis. turkey has been accused in the past of not doing enough to stop foreign fighters passing through its territory to reach isis in syria. it now seems that some of those foreign fighters may have targeted turkey and its biggest airport. holly williams, cbs news, istanbul. an 8-year-old boy is in critical condition this morning after nearly drowning in a cruise ship swimming pool. the anthem of the sea has left new jersey and was a few miles from new york city when the boy was discovered yesterday. he had been without oxygen for 18 minutes. he was flown by helicopter to a hospital. a judge ordered a new trial for a man convicted of killing his former girlfriend after the popular podcast serial drew attention to the case. adnan syed was accused of murdering a woman and burying her in a baltimore park. a judge ruled he should be retried because his attorney did not cross-examine a witness properly. >> we got him a new trial and i will curve my enthusiasm because there is still a lot more fighting to go. he is still not out of jail. >> reporter: syed sent six years in prison. his attorney says he hasn't been able to reach him yet to give him the news. presumptive gop presidential nominee donald trump speaks to thousands of conservatives in colorado later today. trump lost colorado's caucus in a landslide to ted cruz. yesterday in new hampshire, trump told the crowd that he wants to renegotiate many of the country's international trade deals, which he claims costs americans jobs. vice president joe biden told a national public radio that bernie sanders will endorse hillary clinton for president. but when sanders was asked, he hedged, saying he is still working with the clinton campaign on coming together on certain issues. the house plans to vote next week on a gun control bill. the plan would keep guns away from people on terrorism watch lists. the proposal is backed by the national rifle association. house democrats, though, say it isn't strong enough. thunderstorms bringing hail and strong winds turned las vegas streets into rivers. a woman who was rescued from rushing water is hospitalized. it's believed she suffered a heart attack. an inch and a half of rain fell yesterday in just an hour and that is more than one-fourth of the city's average annual rainfall. coming up on is by loving one another. >> i don't know muslims would come here and prayer and become one of the biggest congregations of church of epiphany. >> reporter: so your congregation is much larger than the church's congregation? >> yes. this is the most the church has in muslim prayers. >> reporter: 50-year-old saeed bon is homeless and found this prayer service by chance three years ago. he is one of dozens of homeless people who are part of this congregation. he now helps prepare the sanctuary for friday prayers. for bond, the church has about him more than just a place to pray. >> look. look at that. i'm not christian, but i look at that as beautiful. >> reporter: and during the prayers, we heard a sound. church bells. >> it's amazing, you know?
