the java sea where the plane with 162 aboard went down in bad weather sunday. allen pizzey reports from surabaya indonesia where they're following the rescue operation. >> reporter: they sasha dough on the seabed. some debris has already been brought ashore. if the plane is indeed more intact than shattered it will make it easier to determine what happened. the plane seems to have crashed in water no more than 160 feet. there are more than 40 divers and the u.s. navy destroyer "uss sampson." families of victims can only hope that their loved ones will at least be found when divers can reach the wreckage yesterday many watched in agony as the first body found floating on the sea was broadcast. the terrible images made it clear the focus is now finding on and identifying bodies. at the airport crisis center, officials are taking details from relatives that will help identify bodies when they are found. the i.d. tag he is wearing says family member. writ on it is andreas, the name of his 32-year-old son. he also sport add bandage on his arm where he gave blood for dna. he's praying for a miracle, the only thing he has left to cling to. all but a handful were indonesian whose finger prints would have been placed in a national database when they reached the age of 17 and received an identity card. bodies will be placed in this refrigerated unit at the police compound until they can be autopsied. divers will try to locate the plane's black boxes amid the crash. >> reporter: with a discovery of the wreckage investigators are one step closer to determining the cause of the accident. there was bad weather in the area around the time of the crash. they'll also try to determine the plane's air speed, whether mechanical systems failed, and how the pilots responded before the plane went down. the answers may come from the plane's black boxes. the so-called black box is actually orange and located the tail section of an airbus. it contains the information about the plane's altitude, air speed, and engine performance. there's also cockpit voice box with conversations. earlier this year we were given an unprecedented look at how national transportation safety board engineers opened the shell to extract the memory board of the recorders. it's about the size of the cell phone and within the box it's almost indestructible. >> they have to survive saltwater eeimmersion and immersion in 20 feet of water. we've been successful in recovering data from submerged aircraft. >> so far they've not been asked to participate. because airbus is a french company, that country's equivalent of the ntsb has people in the area. they're coming to grips with what authorities are calling its worst mass murder ever. police say a man with a long criminal record killed eight people and then killed himself. two of the dead are young children. police say the kills appeared to be planned and deliberate domestic violence. >> it is a tragic day for edmonton, and our thoughts go out to the community as we all come to terms with the senseless mass murder of eight people. >> reporter: police discovered eight bodies at two homes monday. the ninth matched the description of the suspect who was reported to be depressed and suicidal. the shooting death of a woman by her own toddler is being called tragic this morning. police say 29-year-old veronica rutledge was shopping at walmart with four children tuesday. her 2-year-old who was sitting in the shopping cart pulled the gun from her purse. the gun went off killing red ledge. the report says she was permitted to carry the weapon. steve scalise said the 2002 speech to a white supremacist group called euro was a mistake he represents. he didn't know the group was an anti-semitic organization formed by david duke. >> i just detest hate groups of any kind. >> john boehner called the appearance an error in judgment but scalise has his full confidence. the cdc says this season's flu has become an epidemic. 15 children across the country have died. the cdc earlier warned this year's flu season could be a severe one. the dominant strain of the virus is associated with hard-hitting flu seasons. well much of the country will need to bundle up as it rings in the new year. wisconsin and parts of the upper midwest are in the grip of a brutal cold. in southern california snow surprised families traveling over the grapevine and bands warming up for the rose parade will face record lows tomorrow. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz has the chilly holiday forecast. >> well, winter disappeared for a little while, but it's back with a vengeance. denver setting a record low last night and we're looking at more of the chill. looking at the values out the door. subzero from the intermountains west. many of us all bumdled up and even dangerous windchills at time, as cold as 45 below zero. looking at below average temperatures for new year's eve. these are readings right around midnight. the only exception is going to be florida, the only warm area. we're looking at snow in arizona, utah, and maybe even into vegas. not expecting anything major there. the biggest totals will be around flagstaff and san juan mountains of colorado. around southern california coldest air of the season, perhaps a record low for the rose parade and rose bowl for new year's day. on closed for the holiday. not having health insurance could cost you in the new year. all have to report to the internal revenue service whether they had health care insurance for the previous year. under obamacare they pace penalties unless they qualify for exemptions for financial hardships. the conference board reports consumer confidence rose 1.6 from november to december. that indicates americans are optimistic about their current prospects as we head into the new year. reits were hot stocks this year.
