The midterm elections can only be described as a route republicans throttled democrats, seizing control of the senate and expanding their control of the house. Cbs news projects the republicans picked up at least seven seats in the senate. The republicans ousted democratic incumbent s north carolina, arkansas, and ohio. They won in south dakota, virginia, and iowa. It is the first time the gop has held the majority in the senate since 2006. And a man likely to become the new Senate Majority leader is the current minority leader, kentuckys mitch mcconnell. He easily won reelection in one of the countrys most watched races. Mcconnell trumped lundbergan grimes. The republicans control the house. They picked up ten seats and come january theyll hold the largest majority there since 1949. President obama has invited congressional leaders to the white house this friday to talk. This follows a very loud message by voters to washington. Theyre very unhappy with this administration and policies and they want change. Voters sent a strong message on tuesday. A strong sweep handed over the senate to the gop. They picked up more than the seats needed to win the majority. Mitch mcconnell is now ready to achieve his longtime goal as Senate Majority leader. Ive heard your concerns. I made them my own. You will be heard in washington. Republicans picked up seats in key battleground states including north carolina. This victory is our victory. Colorado. Tonight we shook senate. And in iowa where joanni ernt picked up the seat. They call tuesdays result as rejection of president obamas policies and a redirection of the democratic party. They have promised they will cooperate with republicans. I promise you i will work with anyone in the senate, democrats, republicans, independents to get things done. Senate harry reid, the current majority leader, said in a statement the message from voters is clear. They want us to work together. Republicans also expanded their majority in the house and held onto important governmentships in a win that will redraw the map for the president s final two years in the office. One still undecided seat is still in louisiana. Democratic senator mary landry will face bill cassidy, republican congressman on december 6th to decide that race. Overall, annemarie, voters are going to be watching washington and looking at the democrat to see if they can work with the white house or will there continue to be political gridlock. Thank you. Shelly monroe capito is the first republican and tim scott is the first black senatorelected from the south since reconstruction. There were 36 gubernatorial races. Republicans picked up four governorships, democrats struggled in states they usually win losing contests in illinois, maryland, and massachusetts. Republican congressman scott walker wins his third election in four years. Walker was first elected in 2010 and then survived a recall vote in 2012. His win last night has led many to speculate he could make a bid for the white house in 2016 but a majority of wisconsin voters polled that he should not run for president. The decisive republican whip was fueled by voter discontent with the president and washington in general. Exit polls found that half of those questions say they expect the next generation of americans to be worse off. Marlie hall has that side of the story. Disappointed with the way the country is being ran and i think its time for a change. Hes not alone. Nearly twothirds of the country say theyre on the wrong track. Just one of five voters approve of the way congress is doing the job. 78 disapproved. Congress hasnt been able to do much and people are frustrated with the gridlock out of washington. President obama faired only slightly better with a 44 approval rating. Were you at all surprised by the sheer number of republican wins in this election . Yes, i was very surprised by the number of republican wins. I expected the democrats to pick up at least one or two of the close races and i was particularly surprised by what happened in the governor races in maryland, illinois, and massachusetts. So now we look ahead and what can voters expect to happen in washington . Are we going to see more gridlock, less gridlock . Whats the next two years for the president going to be like . It could be more, it could be less. At the moment a lot of the political leaders on both sides of the aisles in congress are talking about working together but their track record thus far hasnt been very good. In addition to that the fact that the republicans did so well in this election might motivate many of them to push harder for more conservative policies which the democrats in the senate would try to prevent filibustering. Im sure everyone has an eye of 2016. How do last nights results actually impact what may happen in a president ial race . Well, to me it looks this election looks a lot like what happened to the republicans in 2006. That suggested that they would have an uphill battle for the presidency in 2008, and i think the democrats have much more of an uphill battle than they were expecting based on demographic trends, and think what they need to do is show they can govern effectively as a way of showing that they can rebound from the current election and, you know, move the country forward in a positive enough way to advantage the next democratic candidate for president , which at this moment is hillary clinton.
