to dying, we learned overnight that brittney maynard the terminal cancer patient who wam the face of the right to die movement chose to take a lethal dose of a drug over the weekend. >> i'll die upstairs in my bedroom that i share with my husband, with my mother and my husband by my side and pass peacefully with the music that i like in the background. >> that is how brittney maynard died on saturday. according to a statement from compassion and choices, a right to die-advocacy group, maynard passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends. last month she went public with her battle against brain cancer and her decision to die on her own terms. >> i can't even tell you the amount of relief it provides me to know that i don't have to die the way that it's been described to me that my brain tumor would take me. >> maynard and her husband move from california to oregon, one of four states allowing doctors to prescribe a lethal medication. last week after returning from a trip to the grand canyon she said she was considering postponing her suicide but her condition worsed. according to compassion and choices she was suffering from longer and more serious seedsures, pain, and stroke-like symptoms. >> when i pass, i hope my family is still proud of me in the choices i made. >> some medical ethics and religious groups are opposed to her decision. >> life is always precious, life always has meaning, life always has value, no matter what condition we find ourselves in. >> well, maynard left a final message thanking her friends and family and saying, quote, it is people who pause to appreciate life and give thanks who are happiest. if we change our thoughts, we change our world, love and peace to you all. federal investigators looking into the fatal crash of the version galactic spaceship says the ship broke apart when it deployed. the feathering system slows the trip down. dur friday's fight the tails moved before they should have. >> about nine seconds after the engine ignited the ta limbtry told us that the feathering parameters changed from locked to unlocked. >> the co-pilot who was killed unlocked the feather but it should have not moved until given a second command. the pilot survived. it's still not clear what caused the crash and the investigation will take months. now to the weather. the first bite of winter-like cold. a cold front pushed temperatures into the 30s over parts of the east. a warming trend is expected, but this morning freeze warnings are posted from florida to pennsylvania. it's noted in california yesterday the state was under a winter storm warning. some areas got 5 inches. it also snowed in columbia, south carolina. the unexpected snow backed up traffic for hours. up to a foot of snow fell in maichb. more than 100,000 customers lost power in the central and southern part of the state. the power company says it will take time to restore service in some areas. winter is seven weeks away. it's the last campaign push. republicans are confident they'll win the six seats they need to gain control of the senate. president obama made his final campaign swings yesterday hoping to rally the democratic faithful. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. democrats are battling to defend their senate majority. republicans are sounding more and more confident they can take those seats away from them and grab the majority back. the president was out this weekend trying to help the democrats but some of them may have preferred he stay at home. it's the last day of campaigning before voters take to the polls. president obama made his final campaign swing sunday for democratic hopeful tom wolf. >> i've got a simple message. we've got to vote. >> it was a different reaction in connecticut where the president was interrupted by people protesting his immigration policies. >> i just want to say because we now have like three folks, i am sympathetic to those who are concerned about immigration. >> president obama has been largely absent from the campaign trail this season. some incumbent democrats have been distancing themselves from the president who now has one of the lowest approval ratings of his presidency. >> as the president said his policies are on the ballot this year and these are people passing judgment on the obama administration. >> the focus of these midterms is control of congress. the gop needs to take six seats away from democrats to retake control of the senate. that doesn't mean democrats won't set up a fight. >> going in the varmgs we have are superior to the ones republicans having. >> on tuesday parties will be keeping an eye on nine key battleground states where races are close. now, the cbs battleground tracker does show that republicans have been poised to take control of the senate. large percentages of key groups that favor democrats, young voters and minority voters are expected to sit this one out. >> switch planes. the white house says there was a minor mechanical problem with the flap on the aircraft. the president returned to washington last night. now, kaci hickox, the nurse who fought maine's quarantine said she had no choice but to fight the quarantine. the judge ruled she can go out wherever she likes but hickox said she'll temper her travel. >> i understand the community has been through a lot in the past week and that i do apologize to them for that. i will not go into town into crowded public places. you know, i have had a few friends come visit me in my home and that's absolutely fantastic. >> hickox said she was fighting for the rights of other hemtd care workers f her 21 incubation period ends november 10th. billionaire bill gaits wants to end malaria in his lifetime. the microsoft co-founder said he'll increase his donations to fight the disease to more than 2$200 million a year. it kills people every day, most of them children in africa. and the united chance to keep rising temperatures in check. the no-fly zone put into place over ferguson after the killing of michael brown was done to keep news helicopters away. protests exploded in ferguson days slowed down, at least for now. rain reduced the smoke from the hot lava. it stalled about 140 feet from the main road of a thousand people. 50 homes are set to evacuate if the lava flow gets any closer. a bahamas cruise turned into a halloween nightmare. the cruise ship was disabled friday when it hit something in the water. almost a thousand passenger, many of them americans were evacuated from the ship and taken to hotels in the bahamas. >> the lights went out, we were all eating, it was total chaos, and no one was able to know what was going on. >> we were stranded on an island for
