accident, vice president joe biden is again wrestling with crippling grief. the biden family, along with the president and first lady, and hundreds of others, filled st. anthony of padua roman gathered to celebrate beau biden's life-- father, husband son, delaware's attorney general, a major in the national guard. >> he did in 46 years what most of us couldn't do in 146. he left nothing in the tank. >> axelrod: but the president wanted to make it crystal clear that beau biden's most important achievements would never show up on a resume. >> this was a man who at the democratic national convention didn't spend all his time in back rooms with donors or gladhanding. instead, he rode the escalators in the arena with his son up and down, up and down. >> axelrod: beau biden was just three years when he his brother hunter survived a car accident that claimed the lives of their mother and sister. >> rather than use his childhood trauma as justification for a life of self-pity or self-centeredness, he would live a life for others. >> axelrod: what the president didn't say but what filled this room today was the knowledge that joe biden has endured tragedy enough for two be. >> axelrod: month other speakers was general ray odierno, the army chief of staff, who presented beau biden the legion of merit for his service in the delaware national guard. the search is on for two killers who broke out of a maximum security prison in upstate new york. the prison is in a quiet town in the foothills of the adirondack mountains near the canadian border. how it they do it? it sounds like something from a movie script. >> reporter: more than 200 law enforcement agents searched the town around clinton correctional facility hunting for escapees from new york's largest maximum security prison. 34-year-old david sweat was serving life in prison without parole for murdering a sheriff's deputy in 2002. 48-year-old richest mart was serving 25 years to life for kidnapping murdering murdering and dismembering a businessman. he fleld fled to mexico where he stabbed another man for death was in prison for 10 years and extradited back to new york. new york governor mario cuomo seemed awed by the escape. >> there is no question it was a darg act. this is the first escape from the maximum security portion of the institution ever. >> reporter: according to the governor and law enforcement the two inmates were discovered missing during a 5:30 bed check this morning. there was a hole in their cell wall. a manhole was found uncovered outside the prison wall and prison uniforms were left nearby. governor cuomo tweeted photos of inspecting pipes. prison officials believe they crawled through them to escape underground. it's suspected the inmates used power tool to smash their cell wall and stuff clothes under bed covers to fool guards. >> we want to find out exactly how it happened, suggestion that they needed power tools to accomplish this. how did they get the power tools? from who how? >> the royal canadian mountain police are involved, also. people should not aprotest man and contact police immediately. >> axelrod: a night at the ballpark took a frightening turn last night. a woman at bostonee fenway park was knocked out and seriously injured by a broke know bat that flew into the stands. >> reporter: in the second inning with boston ahead by a run, oakland's oakland's brett lawrie broke his bat on a pitch, it went flying into the stands, hitting a fan between home plate and third base. the woman identifieded as tonya carpenter, lost consciousness for a short time and her injuries were described as life threatening. carpenter could be heard screaming. >> watch the bump! watch the bump here! >> reporter: fans and players fell silent. >> we knew it was bad because they would have not stopped the game in fit wasn't bad. >> reporter: marty walsh is the mayor of boston. >> any time you're sitting on the first third-base side you just never. it's a sport. they're professional athletes playing. they don't mean to do it but unfortunately, things happen. >> reporter: in april a foul ball hit a fan in the head in pittsburgh. she was carried out on a stretcher. and minor league coach mike coolbaugh died in 2007 after being hit by a line drive. major league baseball has tried to reduce broken bats, requiring use of higher density wood with straighter grains. in 2008, there was an average of one broken bat later. the m.l.b. cut that in half. fan john fitch knows howatch out for fly balls but doesn't think about bats. >> you want to make sure you're jumping up and getting it but never a bat coming at you like that no. >> reporter: carpenter is in serious condition tonight. she was with a man and a child at the game. in a statement the family said they are grateful for everyone's thoughts and prayers. jim. >> axelrod: the nfl is dealing with another case of alleged domestic violence following the arrest of john bowlen, son of the owner of the denver broncos. bowlen was taken into custody wednesday night after police responded to a dropped 911 call. adriana diaz is at the broncos' training facility outside denver. >> reporter: a 911 dprawl this denver high-rise is the latest known case of alleged domestic violence by an nfl employee. >> reporter: the call actually involved the son of the owner of the denver broncos. 29-year-old john bowlen works for the broncos in marketing. he's also a candidate to take over the team's ownership from his father, pat bowlen, who has alzheimer's. wednesday night john's girlfriend called 911 during a fight but the call dropped and when 911 called back, john answered. >> reporter: he later called himself "the blood of the city." >> reporter: bowlen was later arrested. his girlfriend told police he shoved her against a wall. the incident brings domestic violence back to the nfl's doorstep. last year, former baltimore ravens running back ray rice punched his then-fiance in an elevator. that case and others prompted the league to overhaul its personal conduct policy. now, any nfl employee who commits domestic violence is automatically suspended and an independent investigation is launched. nfl commissioner roger goodell spoke to "cbs this morning's" charlie rose in april about the new rules. >> our policy is not the same as a criminal standard. it's a standard that says if you violate our personal conduct policy you're subject to discipline. >> reporter: that discipline was laid out in a broncos statement about bowlen. the team said: bowlen was charged with misdemeanor harassment and obstruction of telephone service. jim, last year, the broncos became one of the first nfl teams to require a mandatory domestic violence training for all its employees including john bowlen. >> axelrod: adriana diaz covering for us tonight in englewood, colorado. adriana, thank you. more than a half dozen declared and potential republican candidates for president are in iowa this weekend. former texas governor rick perry, who got in the race this week and wisconsin governor scott walker who has yet to make a public declaration. both rode motorcycles at an event called "roast and ride." let's bring in our political director john dickerson whose first broadcast as moderator of the "face the nation" is tomorrow morning. let's talk iowa. we could see as many as a dozen candidacies when all is said and done. does this make the statement more or less important. >> we may see more than a dozen and they're all strong candidates in one way or another. on the one hand, a field that large, what the republican party is looking for is some kind of sorting technique to winnow the field down into a manageable number. on the other hand, with that many candidates running there is a potential in iowa there's just a great bunching in the caucus there, the first contest in the republican nominating process. and that all the candidates kind of do okay and then they just basically get in the caravan and go through the rest of the primary process. what you have this time around is there's so much money and with help from super pacs, candidates can stay on well past iowa when they couldn't in the past. >> axelrod: okay, let's switch gears and talk chris christie. upper just with the new jersey governor in new hampshire. what did he tell you about when he might be getting into race and does he seem to be concerned at all about his low polling numbers to date? >> well, chris christie says he still has some business to attend to back in new jersey. so that means he's probably not going to get into the race at the earliest until july. he says he's also also got one more kind of check in his open heart to see if he really wants to run. his fort ruins at a low ebb. he was once considered a savior of the party. now he's got to balg p battle his way back, and if he's going to do it he has to do it in new hampshire, voter by voter, in those town halls that he likes so much. it's going to be a long slog for him. >> axelrod: john, thank you. and again a big day tomorrow for john dickerson and all of here at cbs as john
