In Helmand. The benevolent progenitor of this year shindig you'll see blue Gum Eucalyptus trees and circling a field full of people listening to bluegrass music or whatever you see. You. Know how to build a successful Bluegrass Festival don't have too much bluegrass. And. Make it free. Will. It was right he was right 750000 human beings will listen to bluegrass or whatever over the course of this weekend that's astounding That's astounding and as a musician whose name has been on Hardly Strictly posters now for a while I wish I could think each and every one of those humans individually because they're the reason this beautiful anomaly of a festival persists seriously all of the headliners from where. We are the support act where the side kick the side kick to your hero which by the way is a very familiar position for a bluegrass musician Consider for instance a hero of mine Bay Area mandolin god the dog David Grisman. The. Known as many known to many as this acoustic sidekick of one Jerry Garcia. The cat. In the. NY Sun. Good separate good together. The dude. Was in the. Back and. She'd go and it was a goof. Yes Garcia and Grisman Sonny and Cher Hahn and Chewbacca and the rest assured that my little boy Calvin has not one but 2 stuffed Tigers named Hobbes which plays us through this week's brand spanking new song about a largely unknown sidekick to a famous 19th century inventor it's going to be a hit. Live from here veterans may have noticed that I keep writing songs about a guy named Samuel Morse who Hardly Strictly invented the electromagnetic Telegraph in the early mid 18 hundreds Hardly Strictly I say because no one person is ever responsible for any great achievement takes a village and in the Telegraph's case simul Morse relied heavily on the engineering prowess of a man named Alfred Vale Vale was sort of the was in the act to Morse's jobs and speaking of jobs this song's psychic coom hero Alfred Valle began his 845 book about the development of the Telegraph with Chapter 38 verse 35 from the book of jobs I mean job which goes a little something like this. So that they make. And say. Here we. Are. The question. From our. To Joe pinhead. To Joe pinhead so. Those 1st lightning all those you. Question. For the answer. Following my. Own behalf. Of a change to. Go. To It's just before we met the guy the fire was struggling to contain. 40. 40 gems and then I tied to the madness and the thing began ticking we relied on a couple of the suits clear this was in fact a combatant in the universe who would ever use this. Seat because Him. We. Don't spare shit. But. Sheen. And what we do to. Oh we. Took. We have a great show for you today please welcome thank you thank you I. Thank you very much so good to be back here at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass this. Mean. Maybe change her. Clothes. To. Bank to check. My strange. Keep you. As Fran Townsend. I. Don't see. Thank you. Thank you very much we are the Milk Carton Kids My name is Joey and this is Kenneth and we're so flattered and honored to be after back on the show one of my favorite shows to listen to and then realize the only just a few minutes ago that the show was a about psychics. And I got I think it's an aggressive move Chris to invite a duo. On to do a show about Kenneth and my relationship is fragile enough. Without being thrust into a situation where we have to confront on national radio. Which one of us is the main milk carton kid. I don't know if we're going to sell it here today Kenneth and I think of ourselves just as such equals. And we get along great all the time and never fight. And that's what the 1st song was about. Was the. Song is called I'm in everywhere and I said it's often a brand new album called The only ones that came out either yesterday or 5 days from now depending on when this show airs. You were envious Thank you. Have you read any of the early reviews for the album Kenneth I know you used to keep up with that kind of thing now I gave up I gave reading about our band many years ago Joy I don't Chris I don't know if you've ever read about yourself on youtube or read it or any of these things but it's terrifying. Do you do it have you done it I have done it before I have to admit I don't do it anymore I have quit Yeah it's a reflection of one of the ugliest sides of our society I find the 'd n.r.a. Really is never mind the serious part of the comment but really anytime somebody goes on and anonymously offers their opinion to nobody How could that turn out well you were if. The one step removed from that or music journalists they kind of stuck to was the in the one that really made me hang it all up was I read this was in Rolling Stone magazine no joke they wrote quote and I quote The tall one is legs funnier than the squat one Thank you were. I kind of like reading the reviews thanking. Them from the beginning of a career we've been compared to Simon and Garfunkel. Now and I'm kind of Ok with because we all know which one is Garfunkel was. My. Listen Kenneth and I both take turns trading off our moments in the spotlight we're going to play a song I'm used to being playing sort of 2nd fiddle as the guitar player in this band Kenneth usually takes all the flashy solos and gets all the attention and applause and I got sick of it and so I practiced real hard and we've got a song which is sort of my featured moment as a guitar player so I know it's tempting to sort of think of us both as equals but at least in this song I'm going to need all your attention on me. Eyes and ears on this side of the stage I wish there were a Jumbotron or something they could get a close up of my fingers. On this song as they fly across the fretboard because it really is I just have been working hard at it and I hope you appreciate. Thank. Thank thank Joey I just never know you never know where better than Hardly Strictly to look juried in a good old fashioned instrumental break this week's offering was written by the great fiddler Paul show Lasky Paul show asking for youth playing Cathy cowlicks legendary Bay Area bluegrass band the good old persons Oh how I wish I had thought of that name and I wish I'd written this tune Here's Paul's. with with. Welcome back you're listening to Live from here at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco Calif. Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you. Because. You know over there on the base that's Mike Ellis Zalman no. Thank you thank you Mr himself Mike there's a name that comes up in almost every conversation about great studio musicians and that's James Jamieson James Jamerson the great bassist Motown bass is I'm curious what does Mr Jamieson's playing mean to you James Jamieson is a huge inspiration of his to me myself being a bass player to me he's the greatest side man and. Absolutely so James did nothing but switched to the electric bass from the upright bass in its infancy in 19570 and instantly became a virtuoso Onsen on the instrument and to me he was an instant virtuoso yet Tony had chops right out the gate and the main thing that James did is he basically defined the sound of Motown in my opinion obviously Motown a great artist had great songs but it was his bass parts that actually gave it its balance and its definition so we'd like to play a song that James maybe it wasn't a huge hit but to me it's one of James's amaze you know the incredible performances ever recorded of James. This is. So with Mike as James Jamerson and Donovan as Stevie Wonder Here's Davies You can't judge a book by its cover. Nice to. Meet. Him. Back when we come welcome to the airwaves j.i.s. On. His. Barlow now will lose his leverage. Oh mom. Ok high growth or you're just weird that we haven't done this before it's it's a crying shame that we have done it until until right now but I'm very very excited Greece and I met each other I mean I think like 14 years ago we're so when you say 15 it makes it sound old fourteen's right yes I think short just under 2 right at the barn or. A festival which you have to pay money to attend It's weird. All different things in princes go young guys have it right. All along was. A good joke between then and now my god you have done a lot and listening to a song like that I. So I'm having to think about keeping it together to have to host a show and not cry. But I feel like you're able to distill personal experiences down into something that that I can latch onto as someone who has not been through executive same thing as you have are their versions of these songs that are that are way more like oh my god grace Are you Ok and then you and then you're you're going through 234 versions and we get this thing where I'm like. Grace How did you know that I needed you to write this song about my life. I you know it's so it's so funny I I went through a process of trying to write songs for everybody and the more I tried to make it for everybody the less anybody complimented me on my songs. Like it's so interesting like I would be like you know we all feel this thing don't we everybody and everyone be like and I don't really now I'm not sure. And and then if you get specific and if you're comfortable enough to really I don't know put the microscope on your own life it starts to feel intimate in a way that even if the circumstances aren't exactly your story it it just connects better for people and you know it's vulnerable and scary terrifying even Thank you you have to check out this record it's full of full moments just just like that including this next song and that last one yes but I'm so happy to have you playing with me on it this is this is not our 1st jam session though we have jam before it was high sierra jam or that yes it was anybody there for that and it was in like a building this was 2506 maybe you were so right so this is our this is our this is our next jam after that our next May the 3rd.
