"i ask to support our president-elect donald trump as he prepares to assume the duties of the highest office in the land." earlier in the day -- pence joined trump on capitol hill as they met with g-o-p congressional leaders. across the country -- protests continued for a second night. tens of thousands upset with the election of donald trump as our next president. iowa senator joni ernst calls the protests unfortunate. withdrew her support for the president-elect at some point in his campaign. we know donald trump was considering her as a possible running mate. so is she interested if president trump wants her to serve on his cabinet? "not to me personally, no, and i doi th. ta's what i emphasized to mr. trump during the campaign. i hope to be a great advocate for him in the united states senate." next secretary of agriculture is from iowa. and if not iowa -- at least someone from the midwest. in north carolina -- investigators are looking into vandalism at the gop headquarters . two signs outside the building were ripped. the signs thanked volunteers that worked during the election. investigators aren't sure when the signs were damaged. in a kwwl follow-up this morning... it involves the disappearance of cora ann okonski. her case has been considered a missing person case since she disappeared from the tama area 16 years ago. but now investigators say new interviews and evidence reveal she did not go willingly. kwwl spoke with her father back in 2003. "the best thing that can happen that to happen, we think she's dead. and so the next best thing, you know, knowing that she's dead, is that we can find her body, find her remains and give her a funeral. you know, bury her and put it to rest and get some closure." if you know anything that can help law enforcement in the case -- give them a call. iowa state university gives two police departments a special gift -- after two officers were killed in ambush attacks last week. the cyclones wore the two departments' logos on their helmets during last thursday's game. each department received one yesterday... it can serve as a symbol to all jamie pollard - the athletic director for isu - then gave the police chief dana wingert an autographed football. it was a personal gift .. because pollard knows he's an iowa state fan. brewing up support. a coffee company is giving 100- percent of its sales for a day to a family that lost two daughters in a crash. sisters selena and bella died last week in a crash on theiw home from school. their mother and two other sisters also in the car -- one of whom remains in critical condition. funerals for both selena and bella held yesterday. the sit of the inn county crash now with flowers and notes. all three scooters coffee shops in cedar rapids raising money for the families yestersay. one store manager says her daughter went to school with bella. theropy dog, i think for a lot of kids it's really hard for them to kind of grasps everything and to kind of realize that anything could happen at any time-- at one of the locations -- sales doubled yesterday -- raising two- thousand dollars by five yesterday evening. the head man of iowa's transportation department is resigning. paul trombino will leave at the end of the month. he was appointed by governor branstad 5 years ago after working 17 years for the wisconsin d-o-tw leaves. the iowa supreme court upholds a ruling in support of terry branstad's decision. the ruling supports his decision to veto funding to two state-run mental health care facilities. the lawsuit claimed state law requires four to be open in iowa. but the court decided that the governor's vetoes fell within his constitutional power and dismissed the lawsuit. this morning -- a dedication for the university of iowa children's hospital. university leaders will join others in dedicating the new stead family children's hospital. that's happening at 10-30 this morning in the new facility. construction began about 4 years ago. patients are scheduled to begin moving into the new hospital next month. brothers in arms. a promise now kept. a world war two veteran promised -- when his friend died -- he would play taps at his grave. as rikki mitchell shows us -- 14 years later -- he delivered. tom sitter says it's been but as the years went toposh's death -- he said the promise he made eddie kept eating away at him. "they send these soldiers over so young to fight these wars and then they don't live up to their promises of taking care of them when they come home." senator joni earst says she plans to look into what happened between curtis and the v-a. senator ernst is also waiting for answers about the death of brandon ketchum. the marine served two tours in iraq and one in afghanistan. hfa help at the v-a in iowa city but they claim he was turned away. he took his own life in july. senator joni ernst sent a letter to the v-a one week later demanding an investigation. she's still waiting for a response. the state fire marshal is looking into a fire that destroyed a home -- the day the sale was being finalzied. bryan butcher and his wife were at a meeting --closing on the sale of their home in cedar falls. when they came back -- it was burning. else. "there's just been a lot of good you know, i've spent the last 17 years it just rips you, it rips you apart." the family was planning on moving into their new home later this month-- but now will move with no belongings. as for the new owners - bryan says he doesn't know what will happen, but insurance is involved. today in court -- the two girls accused in the slender man stabbing case. it's a motions hearing. the girls were 12 when they allegedly attacked a friend to please a fictional horror character called slender man. the two girls --- now both 14-years old --- are charged as adults in the attempted murder case in wisconsin. reports from several psychologists will be considered in court today. an iowa man on trial, accused of murdering his girlfriend, is now charged with assaulting an inmate. eddie hicks was arrested last year.. police say he stabbed his according to our coverage partners at the telegrpah herald, hicks admitted throwing punches at another inmate after apparently feeling threatened. he now faces assault charges, along with first degree murder. music's man of letters is being remembered this morning. leonard cohen has died. he was already well known as a poet when he moved to new york in the sixties to break into the music business. before long, critics were comparing him to bob dylan for the power of his songwriting. his most famous song, "hallelujah," has been covered hundreds of times since he released it in 1984. a deadly drug is making a name for itself in iowa. carfentanyl is the name of it -- and it is potent. the governor's office is teaming up with others to hold town hall meetings across the state to teach families about this drug and others. mary patch -- lost her niece to prescription pain killers. "i think these kids think they're invincible, they think, well, if i'm not doing heroin, i can take these drugs. back to the drug carfentanyl. it's used to sedate large animals, like elephants. a celebration this morning as an iraqi town is no longer under the control of isis. the community was recaptured as iraqi forces continue to make their push to get a much larger city -- mosul -- out of the hands of isis. people who live there went more than two years -- when isis had control. three protesters go to extremes to stop the construction of a they crawled into the pipeline and refused to come out. this video is from boone county. oxygen was pumped into the pipeline to keep them safe. the protesters say they are trying to protect fresh water supplies -- and, they are willing to risk everything. the des moines register says -- each protester was pulled out after police tied rope to their hands or legs. a broadcasting legend comes back to iowa -- to make a donation to iowa. he went to the university of iowa for a year. he's giving some things he's collected over the years as a journalist to the school. that includes -- a notebook from an his favorite...
