"bluffs are being destroyed, habitat is also destroyed." now they're worried things could get worse--pattison is now asking clayton county to rezone more than 700 acres of property, so they can continue mining into the forseeable future. but to understand why they want to expand, it's impootant to find out who they re, and what they do. pattison sand company began mining silica sand in 2007. that sand is perfectly round, and is used to prop open shale in fracking operations. water, sand and some chemicals are pumped into shale formations, and oil and natural gas are extracted. the fracking industry and has created tens of part of the world to say no to." but it's not without it's the process can do a lot of damage, including gil gutknecht, a spokesperson for pattison, says those fears are exaggerated. "we all benefit. i mean, gasoline at the local pump here is a dollar 62 cents. a big gasoline is so cheap today and is because of this new technology called hydraulic fracturing." back at pattison, they're working to mine much of the st. peter sandstone that sits below the quiet farmlands of clayton county. reserves of this sand strech across much of the region. they're hoping to rezone a large chunk of land here to keep them in business for anywhere from five to fourty five years from now. it's brings tens of millions of dollars into clayton county. "we have to invest enormous more property." but they're being met with stiff resistance from the vifians and and water quality, to noise and the changing face of the landscape. "we just feel that frac sand being destroyed, habitat is also destroyed." and although pattison's request is only for underground mining, a leave the area vulnerable to other development down the road. "we rezone the land to heavy industrial, can somebody else, something on top of the surface the county has now put together a five person committee to answer many of the questions brought up pull studies that have already been done on many months. the vifians are hopeful the committee will come up with recommendation for t te board that will address many of their follow.
