recovering tonight- after firefighters rescue them from their burning home. it happened just before 11:45 last night in cedar falls, at a mobile home park in the 2500 block of union road. firefighters rescued a five- year-old girl, a three-year-old boy and their mother from the home. they had to head back to the scene around four this morning when the fire picked up again. kwwl's lauren moss speaking with firefighters today she joins us now with the latest- they say the 3 and 5 year old are in good condition tonight- while the mother, ashley calfee is at the university of iowa hospitals and clinics for smoke inhalation. meanwhile- crews had to deal with extreme conditions- both from shows a terrifying sight. a fire traps a mother and her 5 and three year old hear their voices inside...calling out for help as they tried to put out the flames with air foam. within minutes- cedar falls fire department arrived on scene. "firefighters got in there and rescued the children. the children were in the back of the trailer from what i understand and they had to crawl through the doorway which was on fire when they went through the doorway and i understand one adult was rescued out the front window." as the sun came out...you can clearly see the damage here. "it's pretty well destroyed now." firefighters say it was a large fire with a lot of smoke...but that's not the only thing they battled.. "it was a long day for us." the wind and the cold fire started up a second time overnight. "we had some things that were starting to freeze up to rotate out personnel because their air mask started to freeze how bad this story could have been. firefighters say they are just glad they got the mother and her two young children out when they did. i spoke with police chief jeff olson, who said everyone was conscious when they got out of the home- again the mother especially took in a lot of smoke though. so she is being treated down in iowa city for the night. we've got you covered, lauren moss kwwl news. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. a family loses their home and four pets in a devastating house fire. the cause of the fire remains under investigation, however, strong winds caused the fire to spread quickly at the home in saint charles. blizzard conditions made it control the blaze. the house is a total loss. an online fundraiser is set up to help the family. authorities are also investigating a weekend house fire that left one man dead in southeast iowa. officials with the fairfield police department say fire crews found the body of 56-year-old richard hendershot while responding to a sunday house fire in fairfield. the investigation is still ongoing. three people were sent to the hospital today after a multiple car accident. it happened on university avenue in cedar falls around noon. it even shut down university avenue for some time. five cars were involved and three people were sent to the hopsital with minor injuries. fire crews say poor visibility due to blowing snow is believed to have been the cause of the accident. a semi flips over in dubuque -- right off of highway 20. it happened today shortly before noon. police say the driver of this semi -- was going too fast while exiting street ramp. the driver told police, his brakes were acting up. there also was a passenger inside. one of them was take to an area hospital for minor injuries. icy road conditions are to blame for an accident that killed three people. platini ndongala, ndickson mandiki and michka kabeya died in the crash, all three men were in their thirties. kwwl's kristin rogers spoke with the vice president of the men were from congo, kristin joins us live from the cedar rapids newsroom. three losses at once in the congolese community obviously means three funerals, he tells me the funeral date depends on the finances available. this video is from a tragic scene where three people were killed, (nats) four vehicles were impacted and multiple people were sent to the hospital. out of the 9 people travelling in this mini way to work from the cedar rapids area, to the tama area at the time of the accident. now a community wants to give those killed a proper funeral, but they're the expenses. the three men who died were from congo, and the local congolese community says anything will help. the vice president of the congolese community in iowa tells me the hope is to have the three funerals all in one day. "you know they're budnled up too but they're exerting so much effort, they get tired, you know they're just trying to get out in the community" pilcher compares wheelchairs in the snow to cars-- if you get a car stuck, the wheels keep spinning but the car doesnt move he says wheelchairs are the same way most cities have 24 hour blowing snow today also-- people in wheelchairs have a hard time
