week away from the start of school. and nothing is more important to a parent than keeping their kids safe. and with many students walking to and from school with valuable ipads and tablets... the district wants to make sure your child is not a victim. fox5s vince sapienza spoke with the school district and learned what they're doing to keep your kids safe. that's right... the clark county school district tells me there were xx incidents last year of kids having their ipads stolen this year the district say 12 middle schools are taking part in the e3 program which allows students to check out and take ipads home. they say parents and students are given an online safety course before the school year. ""this is the perfect opportunity to really speak to your kids the way they walk to school, today's society you watch people walking down the street not paying single thing" " now i spoke with metro earlier who said this week they have begun an instant action plan that puts police up and down the school zones looking for suspicious activity they also said to emphasize no piece of technology is worth getting injured or hurt from hyde park middle school... i'm vince sapienza las vegas school officials are hoping for zero fatalities this upcoming school year. they want everyone to be alert this coming monday. "unfortunately we have 32 individuals who have been killed in pedestrian fatalities here in the valley and we want to make sure that drivers are aware that because they're gonna be on their way back to school, they're gonna see more pedestrians, more bikers, more skateboarders on c-c-s-d police partnered with "look out... kids about" for a bike rodeo and helmet giveaway. the officers led workshops about driving and biking safety. they stressed the importance of always wearing a helmet and learning the safest route before school starts. family members say today's review of the police shooting of 23- year-old keith childress was like reliving that day all over again. childress was shot and killed on december 31 of last year. the clark county district attorney ruled that shooting as justified. fox5's eric live in the newsroom, what was discussed at today's hearing? these fact-finding reviews are public hearings meant to address concerns about officer involved shootings if they are ruled as justified, like the district attorney ruled in this case. but childress' mom told fox5 she still has questions about why her son was killed. "i can't believe this, i can't believe what i heard in this courtroom today." emotions ran high, as family members watched county officials recount unarmed 23 year old. "it was like reliving that day all over again..." that day was news years eve of last year -- when jacqueline lawrence's son, keith childress, was shot and killed by metro police officers. "its left our family torn up, we all miss him so much, he's never going to get to see his daughter" police say childress was wanted by us marshals, who had tracked the 23- year-old to las vegas. marshals tried to make an arrest -- but say childress took off. they called metro for backup, telling officers was wanted for attempted murder. but that was wrong -- childress was actually facing burglary and kidnapping charges after a home invasion in arizona. nats -- get on the ground now in body cam footage, you can see childress ignoring several commands to stop walking and put his hands up. officers thought the childress had a gun... nats -- drop the gun ...but the object in his pocket was a cell phone. childress was unarmed. the clark county prosecuter ruled the shooting as person, not what they're saying" officials say today's review wasn't held to make any decisions -- but to address questions from the public about the shooting. but lawrence says she has one question still left unanswered. (carson boutte) we're going to give them lunch so they don't have to stop what they're doing. we're just going to deliver pizzas to neighborhoods that have flooded (ross boutte/carson's dad) what im more shocked about is how many people donated. we thought it was going to be just our family and whenever it got out through facebook it just looked like the love wanted to be spread all over the area. the vision of one child....led to 363 pizzas being delivered throughout lafayette. carson just showed up at strangers houses with pizzas in hand....the reactions say it all. (yulia efimova, russian swimming silver medalist) "life is so much easier than in russia. everybody is smiling". rio still has its problems, and the olympics couldn't possibly cure them all. but perhaps the games have shown us the way. a global community, pushing each other and lending a helping hand to those lagging behind. the games still inspire, the games do still matter. four major sponsors ended deals with swimmer ryan lochte just hours after the end of the olympic games. speedo said in a statement that it cannot condone behavior that is counter to the brand's values. the company will donate 50 thousand dollars from lochte's fee to a children's charity in brazil. ralph lauren also cut ties with lochte. so did hair removal company "syneron candela" and mattress company "airweave". the olympian and three of his teammates said they were robbed at the olympics in brazil. but a few days later, investigators discovered the group had vandalized a gas station. lochte has since apologized saying he "over- exaggerated" the story. thousands of memes are floating around the internet... making fun of the gorilla that was killed after a boy fell into his enclosure. and the cincinnati zoo has had enough! why they say these memes are particularly hurtful... and what they are doing to honor the fallen gorilla. and some of us might wish we had hearing this story. why one teacher believes a "no homework" policy may help her students! you're watching fox5 news at 4. keepers were forced to shoot and kill their gorilla "harambe"... after a child fell into his enclosure. and now the zoo is putting out a request: stop joking about the incident. you may remember there was a worldwide outcry after harambe was killed. several tributes were created to honor him. but now, those tributes have turned into memes and videos making fun of the situation. you can see some of them here. the cincinnati zoo says its employees are still healing, and making fun of harambe is making they say they are honoring harambe by redoubling gorilla conservation efforts. your instagram pictures could possibly show signs of depression... according to one study. harvard university researchers looked at nearly 44 thousand instagram pictures... some from people who have a history of depression. researchers say people who are depressed posted pictures that were less bright and not as saturated with color. they also posted more frequently, applied more filters, and were more likely to include faces. researchers say they hope to explore new avenues for mental illness screening using this study. several teens have ditched facebook for apps like instagram and snapchat. and now, the social network is trying to win some back with a new app just for them. you're looking at "life-stage." it's a video-only social network app. teens can take a video and pick a frame to go around it. their friends can visit their page to view the videos. the app is meant for people 21 years old or "no homework" sounds like a dream for most students. but it looks like one teacher is going to try this out! you're looking at a note sent home to parents. this was posted on reddit. the teacher says research does not prove homework helps students perform so instead, this teacher will only send work that wasn't finished during the school day. students are encouraged to play outside and spend time with their families instead. a lot of viewers are weighing in on this story on our fox5 facebook page. wendy writes, "this is a huge plus for families with both parents working! now they can spend the little time they have each day during the week doing quality family bonding." not everyone thinks this is a good idea. derek says, "way to keep decreasing the standards set for next generation! those same kids will grow up to have difficulties paying bills, filling out resumes and job applications, and completing "take home" work. a mother puts out a request on facebook, in hopes of helping her autistic daughter. and she was shocked to discover hundreds of strangers cared about her situation! "she has ripped, worn out her favorite shirt. she calls it her pink flower shirt. she's on her fourth one." the shirt, purchased at target, has been out of production since 2012. unable to mend the paper thin shirt anymore, deborah skousen posted this picture on facebook. "so that maybe friends of friends could say 'oh yeah, i have that shirt. my daughter used to wear that shirt' and maybe we'd get 4 or 5 to use as a back up." soon, the pink, flower-print blouses started about 12 that have arrived at our house. we have probably about 140 more that are on their way." just when she was overwhelmed by the kindness... [woman}who's donnie? my roboctopus. live from las vegas, its time for fox5 news at 5. construction scaffolding collapsed at tivoli village... while three workers were on it. one of the workers died. fox5 crews are asking what happened. investigators say that scaffolding fell - just after two this afternoon. i'm christine maddela. death... is now under investigation by osha. fox five's manuel martinez-valle is live from tivolli village - in the west valley - with the latest. it was during a construction project here at tivoli village that scaffolding collapsed. on that scaffolding three employees. this is a picture of that collapsed scaffolding right now the fire department was out here they say they got a call around 2 o'clock staying at the scaffolding fell resulting in a serious injury of one of those employees when they got to the scene they determined that the employee that fell did not survive the fall. the other two people on the scaffolding jump to safety fire department says they weren't injured. the fire department has since left metro was out here for a little bit as well now osha is investigating because this is work related in injury and death. the corners office was also here are the be releasing the employee who lost their life. we know tovoli did send the rest of the construction crews home early after the tragedy. no word on when they will pick construction back up. they did send out a statement saying they are shocked and saddened by the tragedy 'safety and security are our top priorities for all of those who work, shop and visit tivoli village. to that end, we are cooperating with metro, las vegas fire & rescue, osha and all other necessary parties to ensure the proper investigatioan continued safety protocol as this project moves forward.' they're now cooperating with police fire and osha during the investigation mmv ffn ll the clark county district attorney ruled the police shooting of an unarmed man last year was justified. police shot and killed 23-year-old keith childress in december. that ruling was reviewed at a
