the massive "blue cut fire" continues to grow after more than 12 hours of failed efforts to contain it. i'm john huck. i'm christine maddela. the fire caused major problems and destruction for those in the cajon pass. we have team coverage tonight. fox5's cyndi lundeberg has alternate routes to take if you're traveling that way. chief meteorologist ted pretty shows us how the fire will affect air quality in the valley... but first miguel martin v damage the fire has already caused. the out of control brush fire has prompted a state of emergency, massive evacuations, and many road closures ... we're about a half mile away from where fire fighters are still combating the growing flames ... we were there earlier and as your about to see the fire destroyed everything in its path. > > the devastation continues in southern california as the blue cut fire spreads rapidly over cajon pass... > > gary sigler, retired fire fighter > "one of the largest fires i've been here 18 years and i thought a lot of fires down on cajon pass when i was with the department" > > for those living in the area the way the flames spread from a few acres to more than 15 thousand in a matter of hours caught them off guard... > > jason akins, lives in the area > > "the smoke just got more and more intensive the wind unfortunately blowing straight at us it just kind of worked its way up" > > and as the roaring fire continued to spread, it devoured everything path, including businesses like historic summit inn and many homes > > this lead to more than 82,000 people being evacuated from the area and placed in emergency shelters > > zachary tuman > "the cops came up to the door said you guys need to get evacuated the fire is getting closer and closer" > > the surrounding agencies banded together with more than 700 personnel, 102 engines, 15 crews and multiple air tankers... but that was not enough to contain the flames > > "oh it's insane when it came through earlier it was a huge wall of flames there's nothing you can do even the fire trucks were just insane" > > with the fire roaring on, those affected know the damage to their community isn't over yet... > > "it was absolutely scary i was concerned for a lot of people it's major business here the fires are no joke they're called natural disasters for a reason" earlier today six firefighters did become in trapped by the fire two of them had minor injuries they were taken to the hospital but we're told there now all back fighting the fast moving blaze has shut the fast moving blaze has shut down numerous roads and blaze has shut down numerous roads and highways as firefighters try to get a handle on the flames. this has turned four hour routes to and from southern california... into nine-ten hour detours. fox 5s cyndi lundeberg has joins us now in studio with an update... the cajon pass where this fire began burning is about 60 miles east of los angeles... so cars are being diverted... lets take a look at a map to show you... these lit up areas are the routes people are being moved through... the 173, the 138 and the 18 will take you around that blue cut fire.... but these roads are are he up. whether youre heading into southern into california... or heading into the valley there are a few routes drivers are being pushed to. one is the 247... which will take you south through big bear... or south through palm spings. there are at least three different crashes being reported rigth now along the 247... some parts are moving at less than ten miles an hour. you can also head east to the 62 near palm springs... where the 62 and 247 meet near joshua tree. we spoke to a truck driver caught in this traffic mess.... he left la at one... and it took him ten hours to get home. "its pretty interesting especialy when youre wanting to get back home and you got to loo at your alternate rutes im still 192 miles away " according to the california department of transportation... of the 15 are expected to open back up tomorrow morning ... southbound lanes are expected to open around midnight. the last update from caltrans says the southbound lanes would open up tonight at midnight... northbound lanes.. arent expected to open up until 11am for a full list of road closures... visit our website... fox5 vegas dot com. if you've traveled through the affected area--- be sure to head over to our fox5 facebook page and share your photos. the smoke from that fire will be heading into las vegas. let's check in with chief meteorologist ted pretty with a look more heat on the way with 106 on wednesday, then 104 on thursday. we'll stay around 103 on friday and through the weekend. we'll also see afternoon gusts around 20 mph each day. more clouds arrive on monday and tuesday with monsoon moisture staying east of us. average highs for the next week are at 101 & we're getting a look at two of the a gunman was arrested at a shopping center on the northwest part of town. it happened around 1-30 p-m at a t-j maxx department store on durango and elkhorn. police say a customer was being harassed by a man inside... and walking to the parking lot... a man pulled out a gun and robbed her. police say other customers saw the gunman... and called 9-1-1... and some barricaded themselves inside the stores. one mother bolted out the door with her kids... then hid behind a fence. "where am i going to hide what am i going to do with them. or put them so he doesnt get to them. youre freaked out i dont know you feel helpless if has a gun what am i going to do to them. its scary. im all four out. its even scarier too." police say shoppers thought there was a second gunman inside the store. police believe there is only one suspect -- which is the one involved in the robbery. he was taken into custody. thousands of people living in laughlin are wondering if the mess is worth the money. this comes after trash was left at the bullhead city river regatta over the weekend. now -- locals are petitioning to not bring it back. how city officials responded. plus... a close call for lake mead. federal water managers say we shouldn't hit a shortage for another year... but what's it looking like for for over 300,000 nevadans, social security means a secure retirement. but in washington, congressman joe heck supports privatizing it... turning our savings over to wall street... and risking it on the stock market. heck's plan means billions more in fees for wall street. and they've donated his campaigns. those numbers speak for themselves. joe heck is a threat to a secure retirement, because he's part of the problem in washington. afscme people is responsible thousands of laughlin locals are still fuming about the trash left days after the annual bullhead city river regatta. more than 31- hundred people have signed a petition to remove the worlds largest river tube from happening next year. fox five's vince sapienza talked with locals... and has more on how city officials responded. clean and quiet... a very different picture out here on the colorado river than the one that was painted by locals last weekend. "just treated just like i don't know an out house on they dumped everything it was their amounts of cash as and just everywhere everything they could throw away i just threw the beaches here." these are the pictures taken by participants of the bullhead city river regatta immediately after the event. "it was discussing most of environmental impact on the colorado this is our river and the only one we're going to get we need to take care of it no one else is going to." locals were so upset that a petition has been created to cancel the event next year. with over 3100 signatures already. "a lot of a lot of it i said i work in the casinos cross the river so we get a lot of the fights afterwards when everyone is drunk we get a lot of that stuff and then that doesn't include the stuff that sinking to the bottom that nobody can pick up so then we have the fish and everything else that goes through here that's that stuff." but this what it looks like on tuesday. city staff say the mess was cleaned in a matter of hours. and that the event is too valuable to lose, drawing a total economic impact between laughlin and bullhead city at around $20 million dollars. "right now on social media and it's absolutely justified in what he wants to see a parker river looking like that of the trash for an event like this is significant, you know at this time of year it's hot it's real hot in bullhead city and then sometimes people like to just stay indoors and not do much and when peop not doing much it doesn't generate a lot of economic impact we have this event at this time of year so we can generate some awesome business for our community and i think it does just that." the city says they brought in 20 additional dumpsters, 150 additional trash and and more than 120 people working on trash alone. but for some locals i spoke with it still isn't enough, saying the ripple effects afterward are not worth it. "basically just the chaos like i've seen many fights i've just i've seen the aftermath of it and it's not fun i work the night shift at the casinos were everybody's hot in your drunken are sick." 30-thousand floated down the colorado this past weekend, the most in its ten year history. and some residents would like to see it again, just done differently. "we have over 200,000 in ccsd that are in need, 200,000 if you can imagine. their families are in need, they need assistance. this community is so terriffic, such a giving community, that's what we're all counting on.
