end -- shutting down dozens of websites including some of the world's most popular: amazon, netflix, airbnb, twitter, reddit, spotify, and paypal. hackers unleashed a complex attack called a d-dos or distributed denial of service attack. this is when hackers hit websites with an onslaught of junk internet traffic -- overwhelming their servers until they shutdown. friday's attack targeted dyn (dine) - a company whose servers act as a switchboard guiding internet traffic and providing services to some of america's biggest companies. alarmingly hackers in this case took control of tens of millions of everyday household smart tvs and redirected their data to overwhelm servers. cybersecurity experts says d-dos attacks are often used to probe a network, in advance of a larger cyber attack. kellerman says: "this is the first move on a chessboard, whether it's a cybercrime chessboard or espionage chessboard is unbeknownst to me. whats interesting here is this widespread denial of service attack, taking down these websites, would allow the hackers to create a fog of war while they sneak into backdoor of the netrk a hacktivist group called new world hackers has claimed
