their approach to national security. nbc news exclusive, in a rare interview, amal clooney opens up about her latest fight for justice. >> we are aware of the risks involved. >> the target of her new mission and the threat she is facing because of it. historic night. >> and the emmy goes to "game of thrones." >> hbo's home 12 emmys breaking the all time record while the "people v. o.j." wins big as well with nine. and carson picks up an emmy for the voice while the winners, the fashions, the surprises and the jokes today, monday, september good morning welcome to today on this monday morning and it is a busy one. we want to start with some breaking news overnight. five explosive devices discovered in new jersey near a busy train station. this is just a day after a device exploded here in new york city and this morning, police are searching this building in elizabeth, new jersey. they say it is in connection with this investigation. we have complete coverage correspondent miguel almaguer. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. the fbi activity that you were talking about a short time ago was taken place just a mile away from where we are standing. investigators have been there for the past several hours. they're very interested in a local restaurant there. law enforcement officials tell nbc news they're concerned an active terror cell may be working in this area. police were flagged to a suspicious device in this they came across a back pack, opened it up, and looked inside and thought they saw a bomb. that is when they notified authorities who cleared this area, including a local plane station. police moved in, then the explosion happened. the overnight blast sent shock waves through elizabeth, new jersey. police startled, the public rat rattled. the smell of gunfire in the exploding. hours later, heavily armed fbi agents arrived at this nearby home, officials say all part of the investigation. back at the crime scene, the mayor says the bomb squad accidently triggered the blast. >> it was not a controlled explosion. that occurred when they were cutting it in order to make it safe. >> reporter: just before 9:00 p.m. sunday, investigators say two men discovered the back pack in a trash can. pipes and wires inside, just a neighborhood bar. police shut down the adjacent train station. suspending commuter traffic for hours a danger to the public soon became clear. only one of five devices exploded. thankfully, no one hurt, but the blast, powerful enough to kill. >> the loss of life could have been tremendous. >> the people who were doing this, they have no value on human life and it is really difficult to understand their just ten miles away, investigators stopped a vehicle of interest near the verrazano bridge, five people were taken in for questioning in connection to the terror investigation. no charges have been filed yet. the blast in new jersey comes after a powerful explosion in manhattan injuring 29 saturday went off before a 5k. they're concerned an active terror cell with multipliers could be at work in new york and new jersey. three explosions over the last 48 hours that could have all been deadly. >> investigators may be looking for similarities like a similar trigger shared between all of these devices. police willp matt and savannah, an hour away from here, the investigation, the heavy fbi presence continues at that residence so close by. back to you guys. >> thank you very much. >> several different scenes working here. now to the weekend explosion that rocked the manhattan neighborhood and what investigators are learning about that incident. richard engel is there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning savannah. it does seem like there is an york tri-state area but the picture emerging, at least from the incidents this weekend is of a fairly amateurish attempt to carry out a coordinated attack that thankfully, mostly went wrong. security has been beefed up across new york this morning. with more dogs, more armed guards. 1,000 more state police at new york's bustling subway terminal found or exploded over the weekend. the first one in a new jersey trash can saturday morning. two in manhattan that evening. >> everybody get off of the street. >> reporter: investigators are searching for connections and think they have found a key link. the detonators used for all three devices, city officials tell nbc news, were old style flip cell phones. the similarity suggests that the responsible. but who and why? >> a bomb exploding in new york is obviously an act of terrorism, but it is not linked to international terrorism. >> we have a lot more work to do to be able to say what kind of motivation was behind this. >> reporter: the biggest explosion hit new york city at 8:30 saturday night on a crowded street with lots of construction. >> i ran outside and saw glass p were scared out of their wits. >> reporter: that bomb blew up in or under a metal dumpster which appears to have contained much of the shrapnel. no one was killed. 29 were injured. all of them were treated and released. the second device in new york was found just a few blocks away. it looked like a pressure cooker bomb that didn't go off. new york city officials tell nbc news, they have video of someone wheeling it down the street in a took the device out of the suitcase, didn't know what it was, left it, and walked off with the suitcase. and the bomb in the trash can in new jersey, it was timed to go off during a charity race to support u.s. marines but the race was delayed when the small pipe bomb partially exploded, harming no one, officials called the race off. >> okay. we need to shut down this run. shut down this run. speak to somebody u >> reporter: in addition to those being questioned by the fbi, there was also apparently surveillance video that may show the same man at the two locations here in new york city where a bomb exploded and the other device was found. matt, savannah, back to you. >> richard engel at the scene. let's turn to justice correspondent pete williams. he has been working his sources. let's talk about the five people detained on the verrazno bridge. are police or law enforcement optimistic that they have somebody involved in this or at least connected to it? >> reporter: i would say agnostic about that. that is up in the air. the people captured near the bridge are being questioned. it was a combination of factors that led to the arrest including the surveillance video from the new york bombing scenes and the cell phones that were used as timers and power sources in the bomb. obviously the bombers thought the phones would be blown up but one of the devices in new york and the one in seaside park jersey did not go off. police and federal agents identified another man from the surveillance video, one they're actively searching for right now. >> and we're talking or we're hearing this morning about active terror cells operating in new jersey and new york. are law enforcement officials that you're talking about giving you any more information about what they may or may not know about that group? >> reporter: well, i think that is a developing picture. they're following, i think the they have reasons that they're following the lead. the evidence from the phones, the evidence from the surveillance video, whether this is the actual cell, how many people are involved, we don't know. we do know, they tell us, that the devices found overnight in new jersey are similar to the device that was left in the trash can saturday in seaside park. there is that connection. and that device, in turn, has, we're told, been said that it has similarities to the really, very quickly. >> all right. pete, thank you very much. bill bratton is the former police commissioner for new york city. he retired on friday. we have shawn henry, former executive assistant at the fbi. he is now president of crowd strike. good morning to both of you. commissioner, you just left the job on friday. one presumes you're pretty plugged in. we're talking about four different incidents. what is the sense of whether a potential terror attack on the city and this area. >> first, since 9/11, this is only the second successful attack. the first was the hatchet attack on the new york city police officer two years ago, the device that blew up on saturday night, 29 injuries, would have to be deemed a successful and they used the term terrorist is appropriate. we have enough information to clearly indicate it was an act the law enforcement guys have a lot to work with. the devices did not go off. as a result, they have the ability to move forward very quickly. i think we'll see this come to a resolution quickly. >> as you left your post on friday, did your department have under surveillance an individual or individuals that you think they're going back and looking at now in connection with these attacks? >> i won't speak to that. at any given time, the joint working very closely now. what was thought to be two separate unrelated incidents, at this juncture, i think there is a strong belief that they are, in fact, connected. in terms of were the individuals involved in this on the radar, that is part of the investigation moving forward so i can't speak to that as you might expect, but again, my understanding and sense of this is that we'll see a lot of movement today on this matter. >> let's go to shawn henry. there are a couple of ways to look at this was a botched attempt, something that went wrong, an attempted coordinated attempt. or disturbingly, consider it a dry run. we should mention, of course, this is the week that world leaders, including president president descend on this area. >> we had an explosion on saturday night in manhattan. clearly that wasn't dry. whether these events are coordinated, are they connected, jersey will be working almost as one unit and they will be collecting and sharing intelligence across each of those organizations, specifically to identify that. i think when you look at this investigation going forward, savannah, the biggest concern is, there are people that are still out there. nypd, one of the greatest counter terrorism units in the world, the fbi working with the joint terrorism task force as the commissioner just said, there is a lot of evidence, the terrorists analytic center, they'll be able to gather a lot of information from the devices. they've looked at hundreds of thousands of devices in the last 12 years or so. they will look for signatures and i absolutely believe that they will be able to gather intelligence that will be actionable and lead to some furtherance of this investigation savannah. >> let me go to commissioner or former commissioner bratton again. savannah mentioned the timing of descended on new york. are you confident that enough is being done to secure this city during this very challenging week? >> sure. this is an event we have a lot of experience with over the last year, 18 months in new york city, we have beefed up our counter terrorism capabilities by an additional almost 1,300 officers. the governor has assigned additional personnel and the transportation areas. the issue her event reenforces is what we've been saying. it is not a matter of if, it is just a matter of when. unfortunately, the reality of our world today is that these events are probably going to become common which is unfortunate. i point out that the second device was discovered by a woman who reported it. see something, say something. we cannot emphasize that enough. don't live in fear but you have to basically be aware. two homeless people that went, saw the devices and immediately contacted officials. >> so important. former commissioner bill bratton. shawn henry in washington. thank you so much. in the wake of both of these incidents, both presidential candidates are now speaking out about national security with the election only 50 days away, here is the state of the race. hillary clinton is in philadelphia this morning speaking to young voters at temple university. she will then return and the united nations general assembly, including the president. >> donald trump also plans to sit down with the egyptian president. before that, he is holding a rally in florida. that is his third visit to the state in less than two weeks. let's bring in the national correspondent peter alexander at trump tower a few blocks from us. good morning to you. >> hey matt and savannah. good morning to you. 50 days until the election. really offering a real time point and counter point with hillary clinton and donald trump demonstrating very different strategies and styles on issues of national security. after the explosions, the sharp contrast from the candidate's responses. >> just before i got off the plane, a bomb went off in new york. >> donald trump quickly to react, even before new york city police had identified what happened. >> nobody knows exactly what is going on, but in a time, we better get very tough. >> reporter: later toning his tweets. warmest regards, best wishes and condolences to their families. hillary clinton's initial response more measured. >> i think it is always wiser to wait until you have information before making conclusions. terror attacks. the nation remains bitterly divided. many thinking clinton would be a better commander-in-chief but trump is more trusts in terror. he is fighting off criticism from robert gates, the former defense secretary under president obama and bush. in an op ad, saying clinton would a drels her trust worthiness with voters trump is beyond repair and commander-in-chief. >> believe me, i'm so much better at what he is doing than he is. >> as trump tries to bury five years of birtherism, he is facing fall out. >> how and will will donald trump conclude that the president was born in the united states. >> you'll have to ask him. >> and claims of lacking enthusiasm, president obama is calling on african-americans to turn up the heat. insult, an insult to my legacy if this community let's down its guard and fails to activate itself in this election. you want to give me a good send off? 19th of september. we have breaking news just in about the bombings that went in in new york over the weekend. 29 people injured and several other attempted bombings it appears. >> nbc's pete williams is fo some more things to report to us. pete, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, savannah. as we said earlier, the police are searching for one man in particular and now they have publicly identified him as a 28-year-old elizabeth, new jersey man. ahmed khan rahami. he was born january 1st of 1988. the new york police department has just put out a tweet. we had heard this name earlier but were asked not to report it and now they decided to make it the key to this investigation that the group that was stopped on the verrazano bridge is members of his family. that is the connection there, and they believe that this is the man that can be seen in surveillance videos at both of the bombing locations in new york on saturday evening in chelsea, both on 23rd and 27th streets. so he, they believe, is the key to this. how did they get of things. it was both the videos which were a telling thing but also the cell phones that were used as the power sources and the timers in, they believe, all three devices. the one on 23rd street blew up and objliterated the cell phone but the device on 27th street, the pressure cooker and the device left in new jersey on saturday in seaside park did not completely blow up so they were able to exploit the cell phones in both of those. combination of evidence, we're told, has led them to him and there is a very active search for him right now. they simply described him as being sought in connection with the chelsea bombing. that is all they're saying at this point, but it is obviously, they feel, so urgent to find him that they decided to make this public after a family home in new jersey and questioning family members, we're told, stopped on the verrazano overnight. >> to make clear, when you say he can be seen in the two different locations, 23rd and 27th street on the surveillance video, in one of those images, is it true that he is seen actually wheeling a duffel bag down the street that we now know contained the pressure cooker bomb? >> yes, our understanding is that the pressure cooker was brought in a suitcase that was left on the street and then as richard said, at 7:00, somebody suitcase. i'm going to take it for myself. reached inside, took out the white garbage bag that contained the pressure cooker bomb, unaware of a parentally what they had. put it on the street and walked away with the suitcase. >> and pete, we had learned this morning about questioning going in the house in new jersey. we heard about people being stopped and questioned, stopped on the verrazano bridge here. does that bear any connection to your knowledge to t seeking. >> my understanding that it was 100 % connected to him. the location in new jersey being searched is the rahami family home and my understanding is that the people stopped on the verrazano narrow bridge are members of his family. that is the best information that we have at this point. in other words, he is key to a lot of this investigative activity. now, independently, the explosive devices near the commuter train place in isn't clear to us whether that was additional bombs somebody was planting. you are seeing one that went off when the robot was trying to disable it in the group. whether this was somebody trying to pitch a bunch of stuff and get rid of it or another bomb that was planted. we don't know the answer to that. >> pete williams on this. obviously a lot of developments. we'll keep tabs on those throughout the morning. pete, thank you very much. let's go to nbc's tom costello following the investigation including the explosive devices found in new >> good morning, this location i'm at is critical because this is the location saturday fwliegt they found the unexploded pressure cooker bomb that pete was just mentioning, they believe the suspect was right in the middle of the street and then somebody took the bomb out of the suitcase. the bomb ended upright here. they're also looking at very close similarities between these bombs discovered and links or rather similarities i should say to the boston bombing three and overnight, another explosion in new jersey after a police robot examined a back pack that appeared to contain pipe bombs left near a train station. the incident coming as investigators were looking into similarities between this weekend's bombings and attempted bombings in new jersey and new york. the best clues for the nypd were left right in the middle of the street saturday night. an unexploded homemade pressure cooker bomb with an old fashioned f the top. they're examining video of somebody rolling it down the street inside a suitcase before walking away. likely, the same type of bomb that went off just a few blocks away, injuring 29, and another that went off in a trash can in new jersey. all three bearing similarities, say experts, to the pressure cooker bombs that went off at the boston marathon in 2013, killing three and injuring 264. but for the nypd, the unexploded bomb could mean the bomber or mine of evidence. finger prints, wires, soldering, the phones and numbers dialled and received. >> i would want to be trying to track the bomb components back to the purchase place to where the cell phones were bought or any of the bomb components or any of the explosive materials. track it back as fast as i can. i want to accelerate because the bombers are loose. >> reporter: the fwhoom did go off s -- the bomb that did go one struck in the arm with metal, the other bleeding heavily. >> we'll find whoever did this or whatever group did this and they will be brought to justice. >> reporter: explosive experts say the bomb design is similar to the one al qaeda provides would be terrorists in the online magazine. they stress there is no known link to international terrorism. this morning, with world leaders gathering in new york for the u.n. general assembly, the city tighter security blanket. more than 1,000 extra officers and national guard troops are on duty. >> it is very scary. >> nerve wracking but you have to go about your business. >> even with the fbi questioning five people this morning after authorities stopped a vehicle of interest crossing the bridge heading into new york, the concern, at least one bomber and maybe more are still on the loose. >> the bomber is not experienced. they're early in the bomb career but they have a lot of desire to kill, but they haven't been able k >> reporter: we're back now on 27th street where they found that unexploded bomb. that piece of evidence, along with all of the shrapnel and everything collect allied at the other scenes has been sent to the fbi lab in quantico, virginia, for a thorough analysis. they're looking for one suspect at least. back to you. >> a lot of evidence have all reportedly tried intermittent fasting diets, books touting the benefits have become best sellers. but are diet plans like these really realistic for the average person to follow? i tried three different versions, all with the help of "today" nutritionist, joy bauer, who reviewed the rules and created menus to help me stay o three weeks. photos of every meal i ate. but before we examined the rules of the intermittent fasting diets i followed, a visit with wellness expert dr. denise edwards at the university of south florida. >> you don't have that much weight to lose. >> i love you. >> reporter: week one. the 5:2 diet, eating normally for five days out of the week, fasting for two days. fewer than 600 calories. 600 calories," 300 calories each meal. >> reporter: my diet began on a day when i joined friends at a party. >> there's fried chicken. there's more fried chicken. and i get the idea that none of this is going to qualify for 300 calories. >> reporter: but it wasn't just parties that posed a challenge. >> well, good morning. >> reporter: i'm on the road 200 days a year. which means lots of restaurants. >> the kind of things they have on the ben benedict, design your own omelet. ham and cheese. all the sort of things that joy says i should not eat. >> reporter: what i could eat based on the diet's criteria -- "today's" nutritionist joy bauer created a meal plan. two hard boiled eggs, slice of tomato and a cup of berries. later on the day on a run at the airport in charlotte -- >> gelato. tacos. tacos. i want to eat a taco. >> i haven't had much to eat. while i haven't been hangry yet, i'm beginning to get a little upset. this is not fun. >> reporter: my 300-calorie meal -- bland broccoli and just a portion of the meat. >> piece of chicken that fits in the palm of my hand. >> reporter: but in the first week i lost -- three pounds. week two, alternate days i ate normally one day, theyn fasted the next day, eatin 600 calories on those days. one of those days i was covering breaking news in milwaukee. my 300 calorie meal -- peanut butter on a rice cake with a banana and a cup of plain greek yogurt. >> it's peanut butter on styrofoam. >> reporter: different day, same meal but a problem as i headed to another city. >> tsa just informed me that this is a liquid and i can't take it on the airplane. race cakes and make my smeared rice cake -- which apparently tsa will allow to go through security. >> reporter: it was during week two, weakness in between assignments. >> and i know that there is a piece of pizza in here. >> reporter: but with a video diary on my every move, will power kicked in. >> i will resist. all temptations not to cheat. so we can see whether this really works. bu >> reporter: at the end of week two, total weight loss -- six and a half pounds. week three -- time-restrictive. eat only within an eight-hour period between noon and 8:00 p.m. >> that's my until noon meal. >> reporter: there was, of course, some tormenting from the team i work with. but at the end of the three weeks, i'd lost ten and a half my doctor says what you can't see is what she discovered in the blood and that is lower blood sugar levels. >> he likes amazing. >> give me the pros and cons. >> and there are both. in terms of the pros, you reduced your calories, therefore you lost weight. that's going to happen with any calorie controlled plan. also, kerry was much more mindful of eating. i only gave him small little meals on fasting days so you really experienced your food. you slowed down your chewing. you didn't gobble it down. and, also, healthier eating because i designed the meals for him so he wasn't eating 600 calories of hot dogs and cookies. >> quickly, the cons. >> there are definite cons. first off, take pain medicine and what kind? >> yes. so pain obviously during pregnancy can become an issue. we want to know as a health care provider is it pain that started before? did you have a history of migraine headaches? that pain, that may hide some diseases or conditions during pregnancy. mild pain, we usually recommend for you to take acetaminophen and not ibuprofen because we don't want to affect the baby's kidneys, the amniotic fluid levels. if you are taking narcotics, make sure you do that under the guidance of your health care provider. >> that's some strong stuff. >> can be. >> finally, the question of all -- when is it okay to head to the hospita t you were like when can i go to the hospital. some of the key factors as you get towards that time when you are 40 weeks, which is, again, term, obviously if tu break your bag of water which is a sudden gush of fluid. or maybe sometimes a constant trickle, then go to the hospital and be evaluated. fetal movement. if you find the baby is not moving as much as you like, then you really want to pay close attention to it. if it seems to become more of an provider. bleeding is also a big factor that we want to make sure you as if these things continue to make headlines almost every year. why do you think it >> you know, i can only speak to my experience in making the movie. i didn't have a traditional college experience. what i saw was that when you get a bunch of young men together without any real consequences for their actions, it is kind of a battle to be alpha and be the best and bad things happen in that scenario. my little brother just started college this year. i said look, man, before you decide to pledge to a fraternity i would love for you to see this educational tool, something to say that's the case scenario. >> go in with eyes wide open. >> exactly. >> if you were in college now you would be a 24-year-old freshman. you just had a birthday. >> i did. couple days ago. >> what did you do? >> the twitter traffic. did you read? people are addicted to this show and the finale was insane. >> you know, back in the day on federal resources here to help as needed. we're going to make sure that everybody is working together seamlessly as one team to get to the bottom of what happened, to make sure that justice is done. meanwhile, while was this was going on in new york and new jersey, we're also focused on the stabbing attack at the shopping mall in minnesota. at this point we see no connection between that incident and what happened here in new york and new jersey. our attention there is on the people who were injured. again, we are very grateful that no one lost their life. thanks to the quick action of a brave off-duty police officer, the suspect was killed and we federal, state and local law enforcement are working together around the clock to prevent attacks and to keep us safe. they are the best. over the years they've thwarted many plots and saved many lives and we are incredibly grateful for their service today and every single day. we will continue to lead the coalition in the fight against isil which is instigating a lot of people over the internet to carry out attacks. we are going to continue to go after them. we're going to take out their leaders. we're going to take out their infrastructure. they are continuing to lose ground in iraq and in syria and later today i'll be meeting with prime minister abattie of iraq to discuss the need to sustain territory, it exposes isil as the failed cause that it is. and it helps to undermine their ideology which, over time, will make it harder for them to recruit and inspire people to violence. and we're going to continue to enlist tech companies and community and religious leaders to push back against online extremist content and all messages of hate. you know, at moments like this i think it is important to violent extremists are trying to do. they are trying to hurt innocent people, but they also want to inspire fear in all of us and disrupt the way we live, to undermine our values. and so even as we have to be vigilant and aggressive, both in preve preventing senseless acts of violence but also making sure we find those who carry out such acts and bring them to justice. citizens in making sure that we don't succumb to that fear. there is no better example of that than the people of new york and new jersey. when i was speaking to governor cuomo and governor christie and mayor de blasio, one point that they all made is, you know, folks around here, they don't get scared. they're tough. they're resilient. they go about their business every single and that kind of toughness and resoluteness and the recognition that neither individuals, nor organizations like isil can ultimately undermine our way of life. that's the kind of strength that makes me so proud to be an american and that's the kind of strength that is going to be absolutely critical, not just in the days to come but in the by showing those that want to do us harm that they will never beat us, by showing the entire world that as americans we have not and never will give in to fear. that's going to be the most important ingredient defeating those who would carry out terrorist acts against us. thank you very much, everybody. as i said, you will be receiving, i'm sure, ongoing briefings from the fbi and local law enforcement in terms of the >> president obama here in new york for the u.n. general assembly meeting. i want to get right to our nbc justice correspondent, pete williams. if you noticed on the bottom of your screen, we do have some breaking news as that press conference was happening. pete, what do we know? >> reporter: i'm not even sure the president was aware of this, kuw kate, as he was speaking. we are told by several law federal level ahmad rahami was captured near apparently where he was living in new jersey and where those pipe bombs were found and detonated this morning. we're told that some time between 10:30 and 11:00 there was a shoot-out between rahami, who's seen here in a still picture that new jersey police say was from one of the surveillance videos at the new york bombing scenes. with police in linden, new jersey. a short time later they called for the bomb squad. he was apparently wounded in that shooting and has been taken to a nearby hospital. we don't know his condition. but this is breathtakingly fast here, kate. just this morning at about, oh, 7:30 or so, the police made his name public after they'd been searching for him from the previous 15 hours or so. mu multiple evidence. timing devices on the flip phones had numbers that police were able to follow through on. then the surveillance video. all of these things added together led to him. after they couldn't find him after searching his house, questioning members of his family, they decided to make his name public, and less than three hours later he was involved in a shoot-out with police. anee so an astonishingly fast development here, kate. >> remarkable how quickly this is all moving. the pictures that we're showing are all of the same individual now in custody. pete, do your sources, law enforcement, think there might be others vord or are they fairly convinced this is the sole person behind these incidents over the weekend?
