just checks the stripes on her scarf. and slow conditions on i-70 and floyd hill. we don't know where the problem is but we'll have tracy break down the issue coming up. our nation's capital is in the bull's-eye and expected to see the worst of the winter storm impacting the east coast. power outages are expected, trees are expected to fall. a dire situation and people are hunkering down now. >> and the worst of it is yet to come. the historic storm is being blamed for the deaths of nine people. ten states have declared states of emergency as of yesterday. more than 100,000 people are without power this morning. >> the national weather service estimates this storm will cause about a billion dollars in damage. >> vida urbonas has more. weather service is warning of life-threatening blizzard conditions throughout the day. winter storm warnings are stretching through philadelphia, baltimore, new york city, they are all in the path of the major storm. they are dealing with blizzard conditions. blinding snow, paralyzing ice, and widespread power outages are crippling 20 states. in nashville, hundreds of collisions in six hours. and a foot and a half of snow in eastern kentucky and much of the state has more than a foot. some areas seeing trees crashing into homes and cars are sliding into each other. and freeways are at a standstill. gas pumps are empty and store shelves are bare and this monster storm is a thousand miles wide. newyork is bracing and philly expecting a foot and d.c. 2 feet. the storm is so widespread that one in seven americans could get a half foot of snow by urbonas, 9news. this powerful storm system is creating a travel nightmare. 8000 cancellations have been reported across the united states. >> dia is warning people to check their flights before heading out the door. more than 60 flights in and out of dia have been canceled because of the business in the northeast. >> belen de leon is live at king soopers on south wadsworth giving away the magnets once again. >> reporter: the broncos are going to win and we're going to the super bowl and all the fans are excited about getting the magnets. i am at the front of the line. but the line just whips around there's got to be like a gazillion people here. my friend is spotting me because i'm on a chair. don't let me fall. let's get to the forecast. it's really important especially when we look at the east coast. that big old storm is finally going to be pushing to the minority and east tonight. before then we have lots of snow falling. in colorado our forecast is much quieter. we are watching the west of us. that snow you see there -- it doesn't look all that impressive but it's going to arrive tonight and tomorrow in colorado and we'll see the changes. right now it's mild. the overnight lows are usually in the upper teens and right 30s. chillier in northern colorado. kremmling is below zero. the afternoon highs are way above average. we could see 60s and 50s on the map as our highs. it's last weekend of the the temperatures starting off cool. 37degrees. and then by 3:00, temperatures around 58 degrees. so coming up we'll take a look at the all important broncos versus patriots forecast. it's going to be a great game. it's a great morning already. let's give away the magnets. i'm here with the broncos cheerleaders. until supplies last. as you head to the high country this morning, everybody is getting out there and hitting the roads. we have seen the drive time extend. you'll have to add at least an extra half hour if not an hour. the influx of traffic is picking up. around floyd hill we're seeing through idaho springs. that's going to continue throughout the morning. still fairly smooth sailing past idaho springs. everybody is hitting the road at the same time. and it's slowing us down. we're going 10 to 20 miles per hour for the average speed. as you approach idaho springs and then things start to pick up. 86 manipulates and the average speed to u.s. six is 31 miles per hour. plan a little extra time and throughout the next half hour i'm anticipating this to get worse. the good news is we're not dealing with weather elements. heading back to the city -- we don't have a lot of traffic but it's smooth sailing. tomorrow could be a different story. we have the broncos game at 1:00 in the afternoon, right? i've met your dad before and i have a feeling he'll be egging >> you know big joe. he keeps sending -- to me. if you have any funny means i can send to my dad. and another thing, dad, my team is better than yours. boom and that's it. and we move on. let's take a look at the forecast for the today. our forecast is actually looking much quieter in comparison to the other side of the united states. the current temperatures right now are pretty mild and in northern colorado, temperatures in the 20s. we have teens out to greeley and in the high country, the mountain valleys seeing the temperatures below zero. the high for today is 58. we made it to the low 50s yesterday. it's going to be much warmer this afternoon. partly cloudy skies with light winds, as we take a look at the rest of the day. the temperatures warm. and we'll see the clouds stick around for the evening. in northern colorado, 55. same out east. in the 40s and 30s. if you're spending time in the gunnison zone and northern san juans, there's a considerable risk for avalanches. back country travel is not recommended in these areas. your future cast shows a mainly dry forecast across colorado. no watches or warnings. and on the eastern plains, things are just fine. we'll hang onto the clouds this morning. and could see a break around 1 p.m. and after that, the clouds move back in. we'll see the snow develop this evening and tomorrow for the high country. and eventually, tomorrow afternoon on the front range. for tonight, skies mostly cloudy and 27 will be the overnight low. and there's a look at doppler nine. the snow is falling lightly in nevada and idaho. and starting to edge into utah. it doesn't arrive here until tonight. and tomorrow that broncos and i think it will be a partly cloudy and also breezy start. and then that snow develops late in the game and could possibly hold off until the game is over. a high of 45 degrees. and the snow develops late in the afternoon and lasts through monday morning. the temperatures will be chillier with 34 the high. wednesday 49 and thursday a high of 51 degrees. follow me on twitter and take a look at the folks forming a line to get magnets and to see cheerleaders. look at this calendar. sam, i know you're watching. muy caliente. tomorrow? national western stock show. the temperatures around 9 a.m. at 37 degrees. and noon, 57 degrees. and around 3:00, we're talking degrees. so a really nice saturday in store for the you. and the snow is expected to arrive tomorrow. the game day forecast is coming up in just a few. i made a call to viewers, and i asked them if they had any jokes. my dad is a patriots fan. give me something to trash talk back to him. what is the patriots favorite football snack? just be patient. if you're heading back to the city, smooth sailing. tomorrow those traffic flows just like last sunday could be game. jessica and ryan -- >> it could be the same thing this morning but on the other side of the highway. that drive time has slowed. 115. it gives you an idea. >> listen to cdot mountain travel radio for conditions on i-70 between denver and vail. up to the minute road conditions, log another cotrip.org for that. this year they broadcast on fridays and holiday mondays. an accident killed a sky diver from colorado. he had years of experience and made more than 500 jumps. everything seemed routine about the jump until he was 100 feet off the ground. the parachute sudden collapsed. it was the second death for the company in a month. an associated press report outs -- in may 2014. the air force says maintenance errors damaged a missile in the launch silo. and the airmen lost nuclear certification. the accident didn't risk public safety and the they are not saying what happened, it's classified and too sensitive to make public. gunnison county leaders are keeping an eye on an ice jam. the national weather service issued a flood watch this month after ice chunked floated downstream. folks who live there say the ice jams happen every few years. the the denver police department has 32 new officers. they finished the academy and were sworn in yesterday. hundreds of family members came out to support the new police officers now in a they've officially graduated. they'll begin training in the field now. world news for you. doctors without borders says an ambulance was hit in an air strike in yemen. it's part of the one of the most intense 24 hours. dozens of people have been killed in the strike. the media center, 26 people were killed during the bombing. and 22 more were killed in strikes on the capital. since the beginning of the air campaign in march 2015, 5800 people have been killed. in canada a superintendent is in custody after. this happened in a prekindergarten to -- in a remote part of saskatchewan. witnesses at the school heard a lot of screaming and more than a half dozen gunshots. around 900 students attend the community school. investigators have not released suspect. than the u.s. waves have been pounding chile's coastline. that's not stopping the surfers. this is affecting 100 beaches in the region. an unusual sight at a pool in massachusetts. an suv driven by a valet crashed through a condominium building and into the pool. the driver backed the suv up and put it in drive and the car accelerated quickly and plowed through the building. the driver was able to get out. they are trying to figure out if the floor mat got caught under the pedal. >> could you imagine if a valet did that to your car? see the storm edge in from the west. and the storm increases in the mountains, and we'll have cooler air on the front range tomorrow. tonight mostly cloudy in the city and 27 will be the overnight low. and we see the snow towards the west headed in our directions. no a watches, warnings, or advisories have been issued. is amount of snow won't be that the broncos take on the patriots for the afc championship. and the kickoff temperature 45 degrees. mostly cloudy. and i think the snow will hold off until the end of the game. 45 will be the high. and snow starts in the afternoon and evening. overnight news. a suspect is in custody after shooting a person in denver. officers tell us the shooter approached the victim's car on market street and opened fire. one person was rushed to the skies and into today our temperatures yesterday afternoon. our highs are going to be around 58 degrees. partly cloudy skies, and if you're spending time in the mountains today at times during the -- around the higher terrain, gusts up to 40 miles per hour. no watches, no warnings, no advisories. anywhere you're headed across colorado you should be just fine. the mix of clouds and sun on the front range with highs getting the warmest close to 2 p.m. in the downtown area we could get closer to 60 degrees. our normal high around this time of year is 44 so we'll be way above that. in the high country, 30s and 40s in the forecast. keep in mind that if you are the adventurous type and like to do back country travel. it's not really recommended in the gunnison zone and the northern san juans where there's a considerable risk for avalanches. just the snow we've had on top of the weak layer. it's very dangerous. and a bit more blue in the sky and no rain or snow. around 8 p.m. west. and tonight mostly cloudy in the city with the snow edging in on the western slope and developing more tomorrow afternoon into the mountains range. 27 will be the overnight low. and mostly cloudy. the normal low is in the teens. so we'll be above that tonight. doppler nine shows the snow way out to the west. we have one really good mild and dry day across the state. and then tomorrow the snow moves in. and i think that snow is going to hold off until the late in the game or after the game. but the kickoff temperature will be around 45 degrees. we'll have the clouds and the breeze. and i would take the layers with you. and maybe even put the poncho in the clear bag with you. the high is 45. and snow in the late afternoon and evening from 1 to 3 inches through monday morning. and it should stuck in cars since 2:00 yesterday afternoon. multiple wrecks and slow driving conditions caused the backup. >> it was a similar situation in north carolina. 1200 crashes reported yesterday and a stretch of i-85 shut down. >> despite the snow, practice for the carolina panthers went on as planned. they are not used to seeing snow in charlotte. the practice field was covered. and they're those are busy times. on to world news, doctors without borders says an ambulance was hit in an air it's part of the one of the most intense 24 hours since the military campaign. dozens have been killed, including a ambulance driver for doctors without borders. the media center said 26 were killed in the bombing and 22 were killed in strikes on the call tall. since the beginning of the campaign, 5800 people have been killed. in canada a suspect is in custody following the worst school shooting the company has seen in a decade. this happened in a remote part of saskatchewan. cell phone video captures the tense moments. witnesses at the school heard a lot of screaming and a half dozen gunshots. 00 students attend the community school. investigators have not released a lot of information about the suspect or a possible motive. rare in canada. trucks were stranded after torrential rains stranded drivers. they were complaining about the lack of road maintenance. 1200 trucks were trapped for a couple of days without any help. what a mess. and in salt lake city, an uber controversy. for 200 to 300 bucks -- turn a 50-minute drive to a 15 minute ride from salt lake city airport to park city. service started thursday. and after the sheriff's office received hundreds of complaints, a retraining order was -- restraining order was filed. they were landing on private property. an unusual sight at a pool in massachusetts. an suv crashed through a condominium building and into a pool. officers say the driver backed up the vehicle and put it in drive. but investigators are trying to figure out if the vehicle's floor mat got caught under the gas pedal causing the crash. they managed to put the suv out of the building but what a mess. >> the windshield wipers were still going. what a mess. an hour and a half police chase in new zealand came to an end because of a flock of sheep. >> the flock was being moved across the road. and that pursuit started when police tried to stop a speeding car. and police arrested two men in the car and nobody else was hurt. >> pulling double duty. wool and spike strips. a wedding in new zealand -- the video has gone viral. >> probably you've seen this video. it shows a group of men led by the best man and brother of the groom performing the when this dance is performed at a wedding it means the father is just checks the stripes on her scarf. and slow conditions on i-70 and floyd hill. we don't know where the problem is but we'll have tracy break down the issue coming up. our nation's capital is in the bull's-eye and expected to see the worst of the winter storm impacting the east coast. power outages are expected, trees are expected to fall. a dire situation and people are hunkering down now. >> and the worst of it is yet to come. the historic storm is being blamed for the deaths of nine people. ten states have declared states of emergency as of yesterday. more than 100,000 people are without power this morning. >> the national weather service estimates this storm will cause about a billion dollars in damage. >> vida urbonas has more. weather service is warning of life-threatening blizzard conditions throughout the day. winter storm warnings are stretching through philadelphia, baltimore, new york city, they are all in the path of the major storm. they are dealing with blizzard conditions. blinding snow, paralyzing ice, and widespread power outages are crippling 20 states. in nashville, hundreds of collisions in six hours. and a foot and a half of snow in eastern kentucky and much of the state has more than a foot. some areas seeing trees crashing into homes and cars are sliding into each other. and freeways are at a standstill. gas pumps are empty and store shelves are bare and this monster storm is a thousand miles wide. newyork is bracing and philly expecting a foot and d.c. 2 feet. the storm is so widespread that one in seven americans could get a half foot of snow by urbonas, 9news. this powerful storm system is creating a travel nightmare. 8000 cancellations have been reported across the united states. >> dia is warning people to check their flights before heading out the door. more than 60 flights in and out of dia have been canceled because of the business in the northeast. >> belen de leon is live at king soopers on south wadsworth giving away the magnets once again. >> reporter: the broncos are going to win and we're going to the super bowl and all the fans are excited about getting the magnets. i am at the front of the line. but the line just whips around there's got to be like a gazillion people here. my friend is spotting me because i'm on a chair. don't let me fall. let's get to the forecast. it's really important especially when we look at the east coast. that big old storm is finally going to be pushing to the minority and east tonight. before then we have lots of snow falling. in colorado our forecast is much quieter. we are watching the west of us. that snow you see there -- it doesn't look all that impressive but it's going to arrive tonight and tomorrow in colorado and we'll see the changes. right now it's mild. the overnight lows are usually in the upper teens and right 30s. chillier in northern colorado. kremmling is below zero. the afternoon highs are way above average. we could see 60s and 50s on the map as our highs. it's last weekend of the the temperatures starting off cool. 37degrees. and then by 3:00, temperatures around 58 degrees. so coming up we'll take a look at the all important broncos versus patriots forecast. it's going to be a great game. it's a great morning already. let's give away the magnets. i'm here with the broncos cheerleaders. until supplies last. as you head to the high country this morning, everybody is getting out there and hitting the roads. we have seen the drive time extend. you'll have to add at least an extra half hour if not an hour. the influx of traffic is picking up. around floyd hill we're seeing through idaho springs. that's going to continue throughout the morning. still fairly smooth sailing past idaho springs. everybody is hitting the road at the same time. and it's slowing us down. we're going 10 to 20 miles per hour for the average speed. as you approach idaho springs and then things start to pick up. 86 manipulates and the average speed to u.s. six is 31 miles per hour. plan a little extra time and throughout the next half hour i'm anticipating this to get worse. the good news is we're not dealing with weather elements. heading back to the city -- we don't have a lot of traffic but it's smooth sailing. tomorrow could be a different story. we have the broncos game at 1:00 in the afternoon, right? just be patient. if you're heading back to the city, smooth sailing. tomorrow those traffic flows just like last sunday could be game. jessica and ryan -- >> it could be the same thing this morning but on the other side of the highway. that drive time has slowed. 115. it gives you an idea. >> listen to cdot mountain travel radio for conditions on i-70 between denver and vail. up to the minute road conditions, log another cotrip.org for that. this year they broadcast on fridays and holiday mondays. an accident killed a sky diver from colorado. he had years of experience and made more than 500 jumps. everything seemed routine about the jump until he was 100 feet off the ground. the parachute sudden collapsed. it was the second death for the company in a month. an associated press report outs -- in may 2014. the air force says maintenance errors damaged a missile in the launch silo. and the airmen lost nuclear certification. the accident didn't risk public safety and the they are not saying what happened, it's classified and too sensitive to make public. gunnison county leaders are keeping an eye on an ice jam. the national weather service issued a flood watch this month after ice chunked floated downstream. folks who live there say the ice jams happen every few years. the the denver police department has 32 new officers. they finished the academy and were sworn in yesterday. hundreds of family members came out to support the new police officers now in a they've officially graduated. they'll begin training in the field now. world news for you. doctors without borders says an ambulance was hit in an air strike in yemen. it's part of the one of the most intense 24 hours. dozens of people have been killed in the strike. the media center, 26 people were killed during the bombing. and 22 more were killed in strikes on the capital. since the beginning of the air campaign in march 2015, 5800 people have been killed. in canada a superintendent is in custody after. this happened in a prekindergarten to -- in a remote part of saskatchewan. witnesses at the school heard a lot of screaming and more than a half dozen gunshots. around 900 students attend the community school. investigators have not released suspect. than the u.s. waves have been pounding chile's coastline. that's not stopping the surfers. this is affecting 100 beaches in the region. an unusual sight at a pool in massachusetts. an suv driven by a valet crashed through a condominium building and into the pool. the driver backed the suv up and put it in drive and the car accelerated quickly and plowed through the building. the driver was able to get out. they are trying to figure out if the floor mat got caught under the pedal. >> could you imagine if a valet did that to your car? low. and we see the snow towards the west headed in our directions. no a watches, warnings, or advisories have been issued. is amount of snow won't be that the broncos take on the patriots for the afc championship. and the kickoff temperature 45 degrees. mostly cloudy. and i think the snow will hold off until the end of the game. 45 will be the high. and snow starts in the afternoon and evening. overnight news. a suspect is in custody after shooting a person in denver. officers tell us the shooter approached the victim's car on market street and opened fire. one person was rushed to the skies and into today our temperatures yesterday afternoon. our highs are going to be around 58 degrees. partly cloudy skies, and if you're spending time in the mountains today at times during the -- around the higher terrain, gusts up to 40 miles per hour. no watches, no warnings, no advisories. anywhere you're headed across colorado you should be just fine. the mix of clouds and sun on the front range with highs getting the warmest close to 2 p.m. in the downtown area we could get closer to 60 degrees. our normal high around this time of year is 44 so we'll be way above that. in the high country, 30s and 40s in the forecast. keep in mind that if you are the adventurous type and like to do back country travel. it's not really recommended in the gunnison zone and the northern san juans where there's a considerable risk for avalanches. just the snow we've had on top of the weak layer. it's very dangerous. and a bit more blue in the sky and no rain or snow. around 8 p.m. west. and tonight mostly cloudy in the city with the snow edging in on the western slope and developing more tomorrow afternoon into the mountains range. 27 will be the overnight low. and mostly cloudy. the normal low is in the teens. so we'll be above that tonight. doppler nine shows the snow way out to the west. we have one really good mild and dry day across the state. and then tomorrow the snow moves in. and i think that snow is going to hold off until the late in the game or after the game. but the kickoff temperature will be around 45 degrees. we'll have the clouds and the breeze. and i would take the layers with you. and maybe even put the poncho in the clear bag with you. the high is 45. and snow in the late afternoon and evening from 1 to 3 inches through monday morning. and it should thousands stuck in traffic at i 75 near london, kentucky. it prompted the government to call out the national guard. hotels are filling up as drivers look to get off the roads. some of them have been stuck in cars since 2:00 yesterday afternoon. multiple wrecks and slow driving conditions caused the backup. >> it was a similar situation in north carolina. 1200 crashes reported yesterday and a stretch of i-85 shut down. >> despite the snow, practice for the carolina panthers went on as planned. they are not used to seeing snow in charlotte. the practice field was covered. and they're preparing for the arizona cardinals scheduled to arrive today but that could be tricky. out of the area just in time for the nfc kickoff at 4:40. >> the broncos magnets are usually gone in a flash and influx of traffic reach georgetown and continue to the west. and it's near idaho springs the slowdowns. as you go around floyd hill to idaho springs, that's where we see the reds. speeds down around 9 miles per hour in some spots. speed up a little bit. look at the drive times, 123 minutes, over two hours from 6th avenue to u.s. six. plan accordingly and be patient, the good news is we are not battling the weather elements. tomorrow the traffic pattern could be shaken up with the broncos game at 1:00. we could see an influx of traffic earlier. and jessica and rhine we'll have to keep an eye those are busy times. on to world news, doctors without borders says an ambulance was hit in an air it's part of the one of the most intense 24 hours since the military campaign. dozens have been killed, including a ambulance driver for doctors without borders. the media center said 26 were killed in the bombing and 22 were killed in strikes on the call tall. since the beginning of the campaign, 5800 people have been killed. in canada a suspect is in custody following the worst school shooting the company has seen in a decade. this happened in a remote part of saskatchewan. cell phone video captures the tense moments. witnesses at the school heard a lot of screaming and a half dozen gunshots. 00 students attend the community school. investigators have not released a lot of information about the suspect or a possible motive. rare in canada. trucks were stranded after torrential rains stranded drivers. they were complaining about the lack of road maintenance. 1200 trucks were trapped for a couple of days without any help. what a mess. and in salt lake city, an uber controversy. for 200 to 300 bucks -- turn a 50-minute drive to a 15 minute ride from salt lake city airport to park city. service started thursday. and after the sheriff's office received hundreds of complaints, a retraining order was -- restraining order was filed. they were landing on private property. an unusual sight at a pool in massachusetts. an suv crashed through a condominium building and into a pool. officers say the driver backed up the vehicle and put it in drive. but investigators are trying to figure out if the vehicle's floor mat got caught under the gas pedal causing the crash. they managed to put the suv out of the building but what a mess. >> the windshield wipers were still going. what a mess. an hour and a half police chase in new zealand came to an end because of a flock of sheep. >> the flock was being moved across the road. and that pursuit started when police tried to stop a speeding car. and police arrested two men in the car and nobody else was hurt. >> pulling double duty. wool and spike strips. a wedding in new zealand -- the video has gone viral. >> probably you've seen this video. it shows a group of men led by the best man and brother of the groom performing the when this dance is performed at a wedding it means the father is encouraging his son to overcome his problems. since being shared, the video has been viewed 18 million times. >> i was reading the comments and a lot of the family performers are so happy for the
