you know, he is now the oldest to win an olympic gold medal. michael phelps is 31 years. and 41 days. but who keeps specific track of how old they are? >> i do. 15,850 days. today. >> of course. >> yes. >> of course you do. >> and our favorite moment, the one a lot of people are talking about, maybe not favorite but the one people are talking about, the moment, oh, yes, uh- huh, no, no, he was like >> no one is taking this from me. not this time. >> no. >> he was beat out in london in the 200 fly. he has owned this event. and he was coming back with a vengeance. >> you could tell he was thinking of nothing but doing this race again, in this moment, and against these competitors. and getting that medal that he wanted so bad back in londen. >> and we have seen the fierce side of michael phelps but the side. his son is baby boomer and fiance nicole and they are reacting and he said many times as he had the press conference in the last week, how much it means to him that his son gets to be part of this history and we will get to look back at the pictures some day, knowing he was in the stands when his dad retired. now on that note, he says he is going to retire. he said that after london, too. but ryan locky said, i don't think he is going to retire. you watch. he is coming back. and when swimming like that, why wouldn't he? >> but more racing to do il and then when he is done, maybe he can go around and take in some of the sights. and on a clear day, when you go around rio, and that's not the case on this rainy day, you can see one of the seven new wonders of the world, watching over the city of rio. >> it is something that you have to experience in life as well. >> matthew howard and his wife found themselves in a magical land. >> you have to completely come up the entire top of brazil clouds. >> face to face. >> the redeemer. with christ the redeemer. one of the new seven wonders of the world. >> it is it totally different than watching it on tv. >> it really is totally different seeing it up close and personal. about 98 feet tall. 26 extra feet if you include the pedestal. so it it is just an incredible thing. you've got to see when you're in ri >> we had to at least take you away in that way. and we are keeping a close eye on the colorado olympians, there are a lot of them, usa track and field now in the how. and ema coburn from colorado has arrived in rio. and she is already training of course. and ema grew up in a small mountain town and went to cu boulder and still strains in boulder and -- trains in boulder and fun to watch. >> she starts racing this saturday and it looks like she is ready to do impressive mallory pew from colorado. she is now the youngest to score an olympic game for u.s. soccer and 18 at the end of the summer, hanging out with friends and you have a conversation, and so mallory, i was snap chatting and was thinking about what kind of summer you had? >> i graduated from high school and got named to the soccer team and then was the youngest to score a goal it is pretty fun. >> and marty, i heard you making fun of our hair and it is like 412% humidity so you do why now to be honest, i didn't make fun of your hair. i just made fun of matt's hair. because it it is up there. >> and rightfully so. >> yes. >> it is right at six feet. 26 feet. right at the pedal, like the the world, right here. >> no argument there. great to see you guys. fantastic to see you guys. and on the stormy day, good to see you inside and around here, and down in cheryl's usual neck of the woods, castle rock. a great evening. a couple of thunderstorms in that part of the city, and deanna, a gorgeous double rainbow through the evening: red flag warnings from moffett county in colorado and central and new mexico. and flash flood watches in effect. so from noon to 8:00 today, from craig all the way up to the wyoming border, and then through central wyoming, we are going to have high fire danger today. and we could actually have a couple of thunderstorms there. but as you guys know, you get a storm and not much rain and lightning, and that's a bad combination. >> that's the issue, hasn't it. >> oh, my goodness. >> thanks, marty. >> matt, so funny. shy talk. -- i should talk. 9 minutes after 6:00. the last place you would expect to see a dog. and we will tell you how ferry passengers helped save the life of this cast-away. >> first, this morning we are double winners. winners in the overall medal count and winners when it comes to the gold category. u.s. continues to dominate in the u.s. olympic medal count. china is in second with 17 medals and japan with 14 and russia with 12 and australia with 9. the u.s. is leading china in total golds by just we are having some fun with matt and joe, about humidity level in row yes, with matt and cheryl, and -- in rio, and with astronaut and cheryl, and not that much different in denver. and there are periods of rain off and on throughout the day. if you're with us throughout the day and you see matt and cheryl live, you're generally not going to see much sun until late in the afternoon. at best. so several areas of showers, forecast, for most of the venues around rio today. with the temperatures in the 70s for the day. colorado. and high humidity levels. in fact, in eastern colorado, it is just about the same humidity as it is in rio de janiero. right now. the stormy conditions down through arizona and new mexico today. the flash flood watch that i just showed you. and the thunderstorms now moving through through the grand junction area. lightning to start off your day. we will finish the afternoon with lightning storms and small areas of thunderstorms, cutting across, especially from grand county, south, and here through the metro area, and they kind of fizzle out a little today, and best are you going to do, i think down low, is perhaps a quarter of an inch of rain. if you get a shower. in the mountains, you may be able to get up to a half of an inch on a local basis. 90s early in the y. with 70s and 80s, in the mountains. and storms have started in the west. they continue to cut across the state during the afternoon. and evening. and with highs today, in the lower to middle 90s for the front range. and very sultry over the with all of the clouds in the mountains today. sunny early on. the afternoon rain and thunderstorm, the pattern that goes right into the early part of the evening. and knock that out of here by 8:30 tonight. and crank it up tomorrow at 89 degrees. and on track for slightly cooler air friday and saturday and still confine the storms to the afternoon, and a pretty good chance for a storm saturday, and a little less so, coming up, on sunday. we got a big problem on 225, it is a new crash, sky 9 is over 225, southbound, at blocking the far right shoulder and it looks like very close to the far right lane. and two lanes of traffic, three lanes of traffic getting by in the southbound stretch, now that everybody has pushed to the shoulder. it will cause a backup. and we will have more in the next 20 to 30 minutes. let's plan around and use the cherry creek dam road as an alternate. and up north, it is a standard beginning across highway 7 and i-25. looking at the c-dot cams, 6th glare today. eastbounders have not quite slowed down yet. a 10 minute commute from golden to downtown. and accidentwise, 225 along yosemite and speeds 44 miles an hour and 45 as you make the approach to 104th and it is a pretty standard delay. and westbound at steel street, temporary slowdowns but thank goodness it cleared out before the heat of the rush hour kicked in. >> that is good. amelia, thank you. the denver, meant to preserve the natural prairie land near the city and you can now use it. >> we have more from pena boulevard and 56th avenue this morning. and tarhonda, anybody can use this space, right? >> absolutely. that is what it is here for. they want people to use it. 198 acres. the largest open space in denver and the newest as it is officially open to the public. we want to show you where we are on the map. rocky mountains arsenal to the left of us to the west. to the east is pena boulevard. to the south, it is 56th avenue. so looking at that map, you can kind of tell. back out here live, looking toward that fence that you are seeing, that is the arsenal that we were talking about. that is to the west. so this strip of land actually pretty long, pretty big, and very ready for your use. scott gilmore is here now. he is with denver parks and recreation. good morning, scott. >> good morning. >> quite the accomplishment you guys have doing this. but what was going on in this area before you kind of >> so i actually live in the neighborhood. and i would come out here and walk my dogs along the old buckley road and people were dumping and coming out here, and they were trashing the area. and so i actually contacted kim day with the airport and said hey, let's think about possibly, you know, denver parks would like to manage this area, and we know how to take care of property like this. >> that is exactly what are you doing. and now if we walk on over here, we can look back and see all of the trees, it looks beautiful and what is back here? actually an old trailer park, and on the other side of that, that's why the trees are there, first of all, but on the other side of that, the additional trees are along first creek. and first creek is one of the main tributaries that runs through here and joins up with sand creek. but that is where the bald eagles actually roost during the winter and pretty exciting and beautiful. >> we can walk back here and see this. what is the mission to connect neighborhoods to this? >> so one exciting things, million trail to connect green valley ran tox this area. and we just recently got a grant to create an access point at first creek, so people can move all the way from piccadilly to the border of denver and they will be able to ride their bikes into the rocky mountains arsenal. >> scott gill more with denver parks and recreation, thank you very much. and this is all here for the taking. if you want to come out and ex explore it, open from sun up to sundown and the largest open also the newest. and quite an accomplishment, given the fact that, you know, like scott said, some people weren't really valuing the land, and now, it is really being used for its original purpose and preserving the >> a new beautiful place to explore. >> right here in denver. >> kind of cool. >> tarhonda, thank you. 6:19. a picture is worth a thousand words. which is a good thing. because it is pretty hard to describe michael phelps dominance in rio. >> love the pictures though. this one now you can see the meteors in the weekend. but the peak is friday morning. midnight to 5:00 a.m. and this year, we can actually have some bursts up to 200 per hour. the trick is, will you be able to see them? clouds are going to be fairly thick over eastern colorado. and in central colorado. with a few clouds around the area. friday morning, if you really want to see the perseid burst, head west, into western colorado, and that's where we will have the clear skies. >> i want to see the perseid burst. >> that's cool. >> and sky 9 is over 225, and southbound, at yosemite, where a three-car crash blocks the right shoulder. and no lanes are blocked. four lanes of traffic are now squeezing by. but it is already starting to impact the drive southbound, coming from the south side parker road. and
