marty, these next few days should be nice. >> we're going to melt off a lot of snow we got friday morning. then we'll get a little more coming up this friday morning. the storms are in the cascades and extreme northern rockies, up to a foot of snow there and two feet in the sierras, as expected in the el expected -- el nino year. it's very light as far as winds go. we're running between 30 and 40 miles per hour. that's going to be common throughout the day. in the mountains and foothills, 45 and 55 mile-per-hour winds will be common. even if you don't get wind where you are, you will benefit from that effect and it will allow temperatures to move into up ther 40s to about 50 degrees so amelia, we're looking for sunshine slowing. i can say that, in about an hour and a half from now. clear and dry. >> with all the wind out to the west side, i wouldn't be surprised if that's why we morning. they launch out of the rocky mountain metro airport. across u.s. 36 where we're seeing all that wind. 93 is gusty. same goes for six. also i-70 to the west side. as we begin our downtown commute, i want you to keep in mind we have a minor crash at park avenue. busy intersection was -- but the delays are pretty light there. 's the big area of wind that will affect us near the eisenhower and johnson tunnels. across 270, off to a perfect beginning even through the ongoing construction zones. that wrapped up in time. coming up on any next update, we'll talk about your commute to the airport and your drive to see a fire that close, that big, that entire house, 30 feet high, it's like, wow. >> a house explosion in ohio killed a family of four. neighbors say they heard a blast and then they saw flames shooting from the home. just look at how much smoke is pouring out of the roof. the explosion happened in northfield ohio last night. it's about 20 miles south of cleveland. firefighters say a mother, father, two daughters died in the crash. the family dog escaped. investigators have not said what caused the deadly explosion. a new explosion in a popular tourist spot in istanbul. turki's deputy prime minister said a man from syria is responsible for the attack. the prime minister says most of the victims are foreign. several emergency vehicles filled the square, which is home to the historic blue mosque and museum there. one witness described the explosion as a big blast, something you would only hear a hotel park lot became the involved shooting. they were check out reports of a stolen car, but something suspicious turned their vehicle. when they approached it, they saw the man was armed. shots were fired. the suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition. it's unclear if he shot first or fired at all. the officers who rushed inside a planned parenthood as a gunman was shooting there will be honored today. three people were killed, including a uccs police officer. nine others were hurt in this hour okays long standoff between the gunman and police. the local colorado springs sheriff's department will all be recognized today. john suthers will present the -- to six civilians who stepped in to treat victims. working together to investigate if students and teachers have been exposed to tuberculosis. a student was diagnosed with tb during the break. boulevard. students and faculty who need to be tested have been alerted. they know they need to do that. there's no ongoing risk of tb exposure and the faculty and students should be okay to be on campus. >> well, denver is going to be getting a new chief financial officer starting in february. terry kennedy is going to step down from that position as well as the deputy mayor position. she's been in those posts for 4 she plans to start a consulting practice in town. she may make a run for governor in the future. brendan handlin will be replacing them as cfo. they will take on the deputy mayor duties in the future. downtown denver, it will remain a construction zone for a year longer than expected. no construction work has happened for the past eight months. the plan was to have the popular parks trail, ramps, schumacher plaza all upgraded by august. crews hit a snag while excavating the site. coal tar was found. it's messy but not toxic. it has to be cleaned up. >> it's a biproduct and they buried it in different places throughout the city. >> the plan for confluence park was going to cost $4.2 million, but that number is rising along with the number of months it's going to take to finish. park visitors will see a trail completed sometime within the next few weeks. >> you're going to have a chance to boost your broncos pride today. we have another round of united and orange giveaways. about 7 minutes ago, it kicked off at wadsworth avenue. tarhonda thomas is there with all kind of great fans. you have jackets and leg magnets left in your hand. >> reporter: you know what, the fans have been so patient. we're going to give away the first ones live to miss margaret. >> there we go, people. they've got the energy going. we're going to let king soopers take over and give them away. so these are real fans. >> season tickets? most of the metro area will not get wind. we're really not going to have much wind around the area today. it is going to get warm. we'll be calm throughout the metro area. it gets even warmer tomorrow. >> thanks so much, marty. a big wireless company is rolling out a new unlimited dry around the area. we've been talking about the wind up and down the front range and foothills. that's going to be true here. the next snow is on the west coast. oregon and washington getting slammed. heavy snow for the sierras and cascades. that snow doesn't make it into colorado mountains until thursday. it starts thursday and then really snows a little bit heavier on friday. temperatures right now, extremely cold in places where you've anticipated to be cold in some of the high valleys in grand county around the gunnison river and st. louis valley, running between 15 and 30 degrees below zero. high clouds this morning and throughout the day. you're going get a lot of sun and wind, especially metro area. boulder county, a little cooler. fort collins, low 40s upper 30s there. mid-40s to about 50 around town and very windy in the foothills. dry statewide today. no new rain or snow here. we'll pick up a few high clouds moving over the front range and with northeastern colorado, 30s, 40s for the plains, warmer here, mild down south with 20s and 30s in the mountains and west. today, 48, windy on the west side of town and in the foothills. tonight we keep the wind up in the foothills which should keep temperatures above 20 degrees tonight. that's going to launch us into the 50s tomorrow. we do cool slightly on thursday. clouds start picking up. for us, friday looks like less than an inch of snow. slow clearing saturday and a good looking day for the hey, amelia, can you get me one of those magnets? well, if so, you need one of these magnets. we'll tell you when and where to get them, but you better act fast, coming up. >> man, those folks have been lined up sense -- since about 4:00 this morning. amelia is in the traffic center. marty is out in the backyard. marty, things pretty nice today, mild for the next few days. >> we have a chinook wind rolling down the hills. it's calm on the east side of town. get west of wadsworth boulevard, it starts picking up fast. 30, 40 miles per hour. 93 between golden and boulder this morning. top gusts i've seen so far has been 55 at bertha pass. here we are. this is the web cam still. there's some snow blowing across highway 93. you do need to be a little careful. downtown, it is a gorgeous predawn morning. dry conditions, calm conditions around here. we stay in the 20s early on. start pushing 30 by 9:00 a.m. we're just going to pop right by 30 degrees by mid-morning, heading on our way between 45 and 50 degrees. some of the warmer temperatures are going to be on the west side of town where we have those really gusty winds around the area. coming up, we have even warmer conditions tomorrow in the mid- 50s. thursday we start cooling down and then late in the day on way. i will have details coming up in a few minutes. amelia, other than highway 93, it's pretty good conditions down here. >> really good conditions. your drive if you're starting out on the freeways. i-25 and east, out west again, very windy on highway 93. we're hearing windy conditions out near rocky mountain metro and u.s. 36, i-70 and 6th 6th avenue out towards golden. sunrise this morning. 720. that's when things are going to get very bright with very little cloud cover. do expect anticipated delays there. i would say i-25 and colorado, the worst of the worst is going to be 7:30 to 8:30 this morning. westbounders on 36, takes you 20 minutes on speeds around 60 miles per hour. across our drive in and around our side streets, we have been a little active and busy. we have reports of a new crash in holly. if that one sticks around, we could see backups in towards the 6:30 mark. for the rest of us, we're looking pretty clear across downtown. the only exception there. champas and park. that's a hit and run crash this morning. 6:34. this morning a man who denver police say was armed when police officers walked up to his vehicle is in critical condition. he was washed to the hospital after police say at least one officer shot him yesterday afternoon. those officers were investigating a stolen vehicle nest west 26th. when they got a call about a suspicious activity related to a different car, they went to check it out. when they tried to speak to the person in that vehicle, the armed man apparently got out. it's unclear if he shot first or even fired at all, but the spokesperson says the suspect was hit. neither officer was injured. this highlights just how dangerous the job can be. >> an officer never knows what type of encounter they're going to have when they approach a vehicle or enter any type of situation. obviously it can be very dangerous. >> a skier has been rescued after she set out alone to ski >> mountain rescue sent ten people to rescue the skier. it took about four hours to rescue her from the sugar bowl area. after giving her food and water, the rescuer and skier there was paramedics there to make sure she was okay. a homicide detective will be on probation for four years for tampering with evidence in the kidnapping case and lying about having a sexual relationship with the victim. paul patton pled guilty to official misconduct. he must complete 300 hours of community service and have a mental evaluation. a senior at cu boulder is one of the victims in a tragic canoeing accident in wisconsin. patrick wetzel was one of four men who died after a canoe flipped west of milwaukee. daily reports that wetzel was a he grew up in illinois. it's 6:35. tonight it's president obama's address. the white house promises it will be much different than in tracy potts is live on capitol hill with more on what he's expected to say. good morning, tracy. >> hi, corey, good morning. he's expected to talk a little bit about what congress can do in the coming year, this is typically what we see in the state of the union address. the white house says he may hit things like the trans pacific trade partnership, but the bulk is going to reflect on his accomplishments and look ahead at the big picture. where we are as a nation, where we may need to go, what the challenges are going to be, what the opportunities are going to be. president obama in a new video says he's optimistic. he's talking for a second time about what he may say tonight there. 's also a you tube video out from paul ryan, the house view, os -- as you may imagine. ryan says he believes the president, because it's his last speech, is giving an opportunity to the republicans as they take a look at the white house next november. now, we're going to hear the republican response tonight. they're not calling it a response. they're calling it an address from nikki haley. >> tracy potts, live from capitol hill. the hashtag empty seat is filling up twitter this morning ahead of the president's address tonight. the obamas are leaving an empty seat next to the first lady in remembrance of the victims of gun violence. people took to social media yesterday using the hashtag empty see to remember loved ones killed in shootings. rhonda rice is among the guests. she was invited to represent progress over the last several years. she and her family run rice's grandfather started in 1924. also attending the address, the imam at the metro denver center, we talked to him about his inner faith work. this morn ago canadian man who was captured by the taliban in afghanistan is now free. canada's foreign affairs says he was taken back in 2010. the taliban released a sunday's game. >> i put us in the mid-40s. we'll have moisture moving our way into the state. it's in the pacific northwest and northern california today. total mountain snow thursday and friday in the 4-9-inch range. then thursday and friday we get a brief shot of that moisture with cooler air before things warm back up for sunday's broncos game. as far as the snow goes friday afternoon, itlooks like an inch or less. along the continental divide, thursday but friday night, a 4- 9-inch snow. we're going to have really fine conditions for skiing in mountains. >> man, it's been a great she's live this windsor. it's a pretty big deal for those folks. >> reporter: it is. brand new public safety training center. along with this brand new praise also comes incredible new tools where students can have a true hands-on experience. right in front of me, this is called a digital cadaver lab. what students can do, really test out surgeries beforehand. would do in the field. so i've been testing this out, experimenting. then i just move this ahead. look. i can look right inside the brain. that's just incredible to be able to practice surgeries, test things out before you actually do them, whether it's in the field or the operating room. i want to bring in -- your students a week from today will be hands on training on this very machine, one of the first in colorado. >> that's right. this table is an amazing table. everything you would do on a cadaver you can do on this table, and you can practice it multiple times, not just once. so you can look at the muscular system, the nervous system, the skin, the organs. whatever you would like. students have an opportunity to try out the procedures they're learning and practice. >> i think that's really cool too because doctors in our area could actually up load surgeries, guys, so they can they go into the operating room. someone tweeting me a little earlier and said it's like a real life operations game, but it's a game that's really going to help people test things out before you have to deal with the real deal in an operating room in the field for a lot of the students here at the community college. i want to bring you back here to show you that, yes, i feel bad i sliced off part of this fine person's head, but look, i can go right back there. you can move this all the way back down. this is truly hands on learning, marty. for this college to have one of the only machines like this in colorado, it's going to give students that true taste of what it feels like to do something to save lives. >> it's a man after they say he got out of a parked the officers were in the ra ma da mark -- ramada parking lot. when they approached a different car, that's when they saw he was armed. no officer was hurt. the suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition. a homicide detective has been given four years of probation. it's all part of a plea deal. paul patton accused of tampering with the evidence in a kidnapping case and lying about having a sexual relationship with the alleged victim. misconduct. the men and women who were the first people inside a planned parenthood even as a honored today. three people were killed, police officer. they will all be recognized. suthers will also present an award to six civilians who stepped in to treat victims. your time is running out to marty, these next few days should be nice. >> we're going to melt off a lot of snow we got friday morning. then we'll get a little more coming up this friday morning. the storms are in the cascades and extreme northern rockies, up to a foot of snow there and two feet in the sierras, as expected in the el expected -- el nino year. it's very light as far as winds go. we're running between 30 and 40 miles per hour. that's going to be common throughout the day. in the mountains and foothills, 45 and 55 mile-per-hour winds will be common. even if you don't get wind where you are, you will benefit from that effect and it will allow temperatures to move into up ther 40s to about 50 degrees so amelia, we're looking for sunshine slowing. i can say that, in about an hour and a half from now. clear and dry. >> with all the wind out to the west side, i wouldn't be surprised if that's why we morning. they launch out of the rocky mountain metro airport. across u.s. 36 where we're seeing all that wind. 93 is gusty. same goes for six. also i-70 to the west side. as we begin our downtown commute, i want you to keep in mind we have a minor crash at park avenue. busy intersection was -- but the delays are pretty light there. 's the big area of wind that will affect us near the eisenhower and johnson tunnels. across 270, off to a perfect beginning even through the ongoing construction zones. that wrapped up in time. coming up on any next update, we'll talk about your commute to the airport and your drive to see a fire that close, that big, that entire house, 30 feet high, it's like, wow. >> a house explosion in ohio killed a family of four. neighbors say they heard a blast and then they saw flames shooting from the home. just look at how much smoke is pouring out of the roof. the explosion happened in northfield ohio last night. it's about 20 miles south of cleveland. firefighters say a mother, father, two daughters died in the crash. the family dog escaped. investigators have not said what caused the deadly explosion. a new explosion in a popular tourist spot in istanbul. turki's deputy prime minister said a man from syria is responsible for the attack. the prime minister says most of the victims are foreign. several emergency vehicles filled the square, which is home to the historic blue mosque and museum there. one witness described the explosion as a big blast, something you would only hear a hotel park lot became the involved shooting. they were check out reports of a stolen car, but something suspicious turned their vehicle. when they approached it, they saw the man was armed. shots were fired. the suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition. it's unclear if he shot first or fired at all. the officers who rushed inside a planned parenthood as a gunman was shooting there will be honored today. three people were killed, including a uccs police officer. nine others were hurt in this hour okays long standoff between the gunman and police. the local colorado springs sheriff's department will all be recognized today. john suthers will present the -- to six civilians who stepped in to treat victims. working together to investigate if students and teachers have been exposed to tuberculosis. a student was diagnosed with tb during the break. boulevard. students and faculty who need to be tested have been alerted. they know they need to do that. there's no ongoing risk of tb exposure and the faculty and students should be okay to be on campus. >> well, denver is going to be getting a new chief financial officer starting in february. terry kennedy is going to step down from that position as well as the deputy mayor position. she's been in those posts for 4 she plans to start a consulting practice in town. she may make a run for governor in the future. brendan handlin will be replacing them as cfo. they will take on the deputy mayor duties in the future. downtown denver, it will remain a construction zone for a year longer than expected. no construction work has happened for the past eight months. the plan was to have the popular parks trail, ramps, schumacher plaza all upgraded by august. crews hit a snag while excavating the site. coal tar was found. it's messy but not toxic. it has to be cleaned up. >> it's a biproduct and they buried it in different places throughout the city. >> the plan for confluence park was going to cost $4.2 million, but that number is rising along with the number of months it's going to take to finish. park visitors will see a trail completed sometime within the next few weeks. >> you're going to have a chance to boost your broncos pride today. we have another round of united and orange giveaways. about 7 minutes ago, it kicked off at wadsworth avenue. tarhonda thomas is there with all kind of great fans. you have jackets and leg magnets left in your hand. >> reporter: you know what, the fans have been so patient. we're going to give away the first ones live to miss margaret. >> there we go, people. they've got the energy going. we're going to let king soopers take over and give them away. so these are real fans. >> season tickets? most of the metro area will not get wind. we're really not going to have much wind around the area today. it is going to get warm. we'll be calm throughout the metro area. it gets even warmer tomorrow. >> thanks so much, marty. a big wireless company is rolling out a new unlimited dry around the area. we've been talking about the wind up and down the front range and foothills. that's going to be true here. the next snow is on the west coast. oregon and washington getting slammed. heavy snow for the sierras and cascades. that snow doesn't make it into colorado mountains until thursday. it starts thursday and then really snows a little bit heavier on friday. temperatures right now, extremely cold in places where you've anticipated to be cold in some of the high valleys in grand county around the gunnison river and st. louis valley, running between 15 and 30 degrees below zero. high clouds this morning and throughout the day. you're going get a lot of sun and wind, especially metro area. boulder county, a little cooler. fort collins, low 40s upper 30s there. mid-40s to about 50 around town and very windy in the foothills. dry statewide today. no new rain or snow here. we'll pick up a few high clouds moving over the front range and with northeastern colorado, 30s, 40s for the plains, warmer here, mild down south with 20s and 30s in the mountains and west. today, 48, windy on the west side of town and in the foothills. tonight we keep the wind up in the foothills which should keep temperatures above 20 degrees tonight. that's going to launch us into the 50s tomorrow. we do cool slightly on thursday. clouds start picking up. for us, friday looks like less than an inch of snow. slow clearing saturday and a good looking day for the hey, amelia, can you get me one of those magnets? well, if so, you need one of these magnets. we'll tell you when and where to get them, but you better act fast, coming up. >> man, those folks have been lined up sense -- since about 4:00 this morning. amelia is in the traffic center. marty is out in the backyard. marty, things pretty nice today, mild for the next few days. >> we have a chinook wind rolling down the hills. it's calm on the east side of town. get west of wadsworth boulevard, it starts picking up fast. 30, 40 miles per hour. 93 between golden and boulder this morning. top gusts i've seen so far has been 55 at bertha pass. here we are. this is the web cam still. there's some snow blowing across highway 93. you do need to be a little careful. downtown, it is a gorgeous predawn morning. dry conditions, calm conditions around here. we stay in the 20s early on. start pushing 30 by 9:00 a.m. we're just going to pop right by 30 degrees by mid-morning, heading on our way between 45 and 50 degrees. some of the warmer temperatures are going to be on the west side of town where we have those really gusty winds around the area. coming up, we have even warmer conditions tomorrow in the mid- 50s. thursday we start cooling down and then late in the day on way. i will have details coming up in a few minutes. amelia, other than highway 93, it's pretty good conditions down here. >> really good conditions. your drive if you're starting out on the freeways. i-25 and east, out west again, very windy on highway 93. we're hearing windy conditions out near rocky mountain metro and u.s. 36, i-70 and 6th 6th avenue out towards golden. sunrise this morning. 720. that's when things are going to get very bright with very little cloud cover. do expect anticipated delays there. i would say i-25 and colorado, the worst of the worst is going to be 7:30 to 8:30 this morning. westbounders on 36, takes you 20 minutes on speeds around 60 miles per hour. across our drive in and around our side streets, we have been a little active and busy. we have reports of a new crash in holly. if that one sticks around, we could see backups in towards the 6:30 mark. for the rest of us, we're looking pretty clear across downtown. the only exception there. champas and park. that's a hit and run crash this morning. 6:34. this morning a man who denver police say was armed when police officers walked up to his vehicle is in critical condition. he was washed to the hospital after police say at least one officer shot him yesterday afternoon. those officers were investigating a stolen vehicle nest west 26th. when they got a call about a suspicious activity related to a different car, they went to check it out. when they tried to speak to the person in that vehicle, the armed man apparently got out. it's unclear if he shot first or even fired at all, but the spokesperson says the suspect was hit. neither officer was injured. this highlights just how dangerous the job can be. >> an officer never knows what type of encounter they're going to have when they approach a vehicle or enter any type of situation. obviously it can be very dangerous. >> a skier has been rescued after she set out alone to ski >> mountain rescue sent ten people to rescue the skier. it took about four hours to rescue her from the sugar bowl area. after giving her food and water, the rescuer and skier there was paramedics there to make sure she was okay. a homicide detective will be on probation for four years for tampering with evidence in the kidnapping case and lying about having a sexual relationship with the victim. paul patton pled guilty to official misconduct. he must complete 300 hours of community service and have a mental evaluation. a senior at cu boulder is one of the victims in a tragic canoeing accident in wisconsin. patrick wetzel was one of four men who died after a canoe flipped west of milwaukee. daily reports that wetzel was a he grew up in illinois. it's 6:35. tonight it's president obama's address. the white house promises it will be much different than in tracy potts is live on capitol hill with more on what he's expected to say. good morning, tracy. >> hi, corey, good morning. he's expected to talk a little bit about what congress can do in the coming year, this is typically what we see in the state of the union address. the white house says he may hit things like the trans pacific trade partnership, but the bulk is going to reflect on his accomplishments and look ahead at the big picture. where we are as a nation, where we may need to go, what the challenges are going to be, what the opportunities are going to be. president obama in a new video says he's optimistic. he's talking for a second time about what he may say tonight there. 's also a you tube video out from paul ryan, the house view, os -- as you may imagine. ryan says he believes the president, because it's his last speech, is giving an opportunity to the republicans as they take a look at the white house next november. now, we're going to hear the republican response tonight. they're not calling it a response. they're calling it an address from nikki haley. >> tracy potts, live from capitol hill. the hashtag empty seat is filling up twitter this morning ahead of the president's address tonight. the obamas are leaving an empty seat next to the first lady in remembrance of the victims of gun violence. people took to social media yesterday using the hashtag empty see to remember loved ones killed in shootings. rhonda rice is among the guests. she was invited to represent progress over the last several years. she and her family run rice's grandfather started in 1924. also attending the address, the imam at the metro denver center, we talked to him about his inner faith work. this morn ago canadian man who was captured by the taliban in afghanistan is now free. canada's foreign affairs says he was taken back in 2010. the taliban released a video, accusing him of being a spy. right now we don't know why they let him go. today is a new day, another chance to get into the madness that is our broncos magnet giveaway. yesterday we had 1,000 sunday's game. >> i put us in the mid-40s. we'll have moisture moving our way into the state. it's in the pacific northwest and northern california today. total mountain snow thursday and friday in the 4-9-inch range. then thursday and friday we get a brief shot of that moisture with cooler air before things warm back up for sunday's broncos game. as far as the snow goes friday afternoon, itlooks like an inch or less. along the continental divide, thursday but friday night, a 4- 9-inch snow. we're going to have really fine conditions for skiing in mountains. >> man, it's been a great >> yeah. 6:43 right now. hate parking? got deep markets? well, if you can afford this well, tomorrow community college is going to be holding -- colleen ferreira is getting a look at this facility. she's live this windsor. it's a pretty big deal for those folks. >> reporter: it is. brand new public safety training center. along with this brand new praise also comes incredible new tools where students can have a true hands-on experience. right in front of me, this is called a digital cadaver lab. what students can do, really test out surgeries beforehand. would do in the field. so i've been testing this out, experimenting. then i just move this ahead. look. i can look right inside the brain. that's just incredible to be able to practice surgeries, test things out before you actually do them, whether it's in the field or the operating room. i want to bring in -- your students a week from today will be hands on training on this very machine, one of the first in colorado. >> that's right. this table is an amazing table. everything you would do on a cadaver you can do on this table, and you can practice it multiple times, not just once. so you can look at the muscular system, the nervous system, the skin, the organs. whatever you would like. students have an opportunity to try out the procedures they're learning and practice. >> i think that's really cool too because doctors in our area could actually up load surgeries, guys, so they can they go into the operating room. someone tweeting me a little earlier and said it's like a real life operations game, but it's a game that's really going to help people test things out before you have to deal with the real deal in an operating room in the field for a lot of the students here at the community college. i want to bring you back here to show you that, yes, i feel bad i sliced off part of this fine person's head, but look, i can go right back there. you can move this all the way back down. this is truly hands on learning, marty. for this college to have one of the only machines like this in colorado, it's going to give students that true taste of what it feels like to do something to save lives. >> it's amazing. if you don't get the wishbone right in place, is it going to buzz at you? i will have to ask colleen that in our next shot. it's been very cold in central colorado. 26 below gunnison. 4 in durango and foggy. we have dense fog going in parts of the san juan river base. the lower stretches of highway 150. less than a quarter mile visibility through 11:00 a.m. 45 to 55 miles per hour this morning. this afternoon we'll still be cooking along between 35 and 45. it's going to be windy on the west side of town. that really shouldn't change all that much. of course you're over on the east side of town where it's calm and nice, amelia. >> we're starting to build up volume wise. our live view of 225 and parker road show that delay. this is on the earlier side. i wouldn't be surprised if
