just a quarter mile of visibility through holy oak and wray. there we've got dense fog advisories in place until, well, past 5 a.m. now. and we are expecting to see with this very cold temperatures and possibly some freezing fog creating that light glaze that you see out on the roads. that's going to he create treacherous driving conditions out east. new winter weather advisories have been posted for denver, our foothills and along the continental divide from this system that is going to be moving in. most of the snow right now down to the south and across southeast parts of the state. lamar seeing a rain-snow mix. most of that falling on the south side of the city. heading into this afternoon those bands will start to pick up and get a little bit more intense after 5 or 6:00 tonight, which of course may have an impact on tonight's drive. but for this morning, amelia, how are things looking out there? thanks. across i-25, c-470 we have a crash. later today downtown denver is going to be a very, very busy ride. the stock show parade kicks off at noon across union station across broadway. i said what are the chance for snow today? becky said if it's happening, it's going to be light. not a big impact to the parade. if you are headed out, definitely bundle up this morning. 25 in jewel. so far speeds along 225 at 10 minutes. 66 miles per hour north and southbound today. across the drive the white patches you see, those are snow. we will get it to the orange in a bit, which shows us where the fog is sitting across this morning's commute. speeds haven't slowed down yet, but i do have a feeling this one's going to have a pretty big impact. south korea now retailiation plans reacting to north korea's announcement that is successfully tested a hydrogen south korea says it will resume cross-border propaganda broadcast that north korea considers an act of war. tomorrow. the u.s., other governments and experts have expressed doubt that north korea actually tested a hydrogen bomb. he was once suspected as an accomplice in the murder of the head of the department of corrections in colorado. this morning he is accused of targeting another doc employee. vida urbonas is here with more. >> reporter: tom clements was murdered at his monument home in march of 2013. evan eble shot him. he died in a shoot-out with police in texas. now one of eble's associates is accused of breaking into a house of a former department of corrections employee. this is surveillance from the night of december 30th. el paso county deputies were called out to a report of a burglary in progress around 9:00. on the police scanners the reporting party told 911 the the video shows the suspect approaching the house, then leaving, then approaching again. >> someone trying to get in. it they have a vehicle up against the garage. >> reporter: just minutes later the suspect started shooting. there was a chase and a crash. >> shots fired! shots fired. >> back up! back up! >> reporter: guolee is a reported member of the white supremacist prison gang. he was also reportedly once an associate of evan eble, the man who shot and killed tom clements the in 2013. guolee is in the hospital. a spokesperson with the doc says appropriate information has been shared with employees about this and how to protect themselves. >> thank you. right now officers need your help finding a missing pueblo women. family members say they haven't seen 57-year-old waunita nissan van in the parking lot of runyan lake. anyone who nose her whereabouts can peb lepolice. today another diverging diamond intersection is going to open along u.s. 36, the boulder turnpike. -like the first one, the new one was built on the mccaslin overpass bridge at u.s. 36. the first diverging diamond opened in october. we haven't heard of any major problems adjusting it to the new traffic pattern. in case you have not driven on it yet, here's how it works. cars cross over to the left side of the road to turn to the left onto the interstate. drivers won't have to stop or wait for a light or cross oncoming traffic. it is supposed to help drivers save time. again they are going to open another one there. this year is bringing changes to our education system. some of the changes were implemented nationally. others are statewide changes. 9news reporter tarhonda thomas one is a mandatory college entrance exam? and state legislators voted last year to change that entrance exam from the act to the sat. however, they could still let 11th graders this year take the act since they have been prepping for it. another thing legislators did in the latest session is to reduce the amount of standardized testing in the state. that is also part of a national initiative signed by president obama. it's called the every child succeeds act. president obama signed this into law in december. what this law does is it essentially replaces the no child left behind act, which was signed in 2002 by president the george w. bush. president obama said that no child left behind had good intentions, but it really kind of went off tracking when it comes to standardized testing. the new act basically takes away some of that standardized testing. it still requires starting in the third grade, but states really have more power, more say failure. states can intervene in schools that are underperforming. the act mandates that states work with the lowest 5% of help them to achieve their goals. it says that states and schools can set those different standards and look at things that are non-academic factors and academics as well in terms of determining a school's success, not just on those standardized tests. we are seeing a shift nationally and locally in those efforts to get beyond the standardized test in terms in determining school success and in terms of making sure that students achieve. winter weather advisories have been posted for denver and locations out to our west. these in place start this evening lasting through -- 2 p.m. in the friday. here in the city 2-6 inches of new snow. snow in the mountains to the south. in fact, many areas at highest elevations could see a foot or more. it's the wind that is going to be the biggest issue. here is the front range snow forecast. 2-6 inches possible in denver. lighter amounts around fort collins and greeley. in the mountains areas 6-10 inches of snow there. the foothills looking at 3-7 inches of new snow. another round of winter weather. corey. >> thank you. we do have some breaking news to bring you right now. we have learned that paris police officers killed a man outside of a police station. the ministry of interior said the man tried to attack an officer with a knife before he was shot dead. officers say the man shouted goat god is great goat. police believe the man had -- that he was wearing a fake explosive vest at the time. that is new information. the situation is being investigated as potential terrorism. but again that correspondent was we are working to get more information. it's 5:39 right now. last night's jackpot was worth half $1 billion. numbers. it's 47, 2, 63, 62, 11. 17. the next powerball drawing will the estimated prize $675 million. that would be the largest jackpot of any lottery game in u.s. history. if you plan on buying a ticket, we have got a little help for you. these are some of the most commonly powerball numbers. 26 has been drawn 266 times followed by the number 41. numbers 22 and 16 have both been drawn 254 times. the next most popular numbers are 42, 35, 39. now, even with these common numbers, the odds of winning saturday's jackpot are 1 in 292 million. to put that in perspective, you are more likely to get struck by the united states, get bitten by a shark, or die from an asteroid. >> all right. does ma mean -- mean the odds go up if you are president obama? >> no. oh, my goodness. hey, tell you what. we are watching fourth this latest storm system to move the front range. mostly cloudy skies. no snow he yet. temperatures also not the too bad, but we are not going to warm up much from this today. 31 in aurora and downtown denver. broomfield at 37. so is boulder. black hawk 22. up around silverthorne just 19. with the cloudy skies and the snow, we're only going to see temperatures warm up another 4 to 7 degrees today. the snow right now just west of the denver metro area. we are under a winter weather advisory. most of the snow falling from a separate system that is now hitting southern and southeast colorado with pretty heavy snow bands. rain and snow mix. the storm system bringing us our snow later today coming in from the west. same system that brought california all of that rain and snow. it manages to push just south here of colorado and that's what's going to initiate some of the snow showers for us. they could start as early as 9:00 this morning down along the palmer divide near castle rock, start to see the heavier bands move in. past 5, that's when we will get most of the accumulation of the snow continues to lightly fall with light winds all the way through friday, and here around town 2-6 inches of accumulation. 36 degrees the high. 32 greeley today. fort collins 34. on the eastern plains highs in the 30s and 40s. 20s and 30s for the mountains. denver this afternoon to tonight 1-2 inches of snow around the city. overnight tonight an additional 1-2 inches will fall. 16 the low. then again storm total 2-6 inches here in the city. low her amounts around fort collins -- lower amounts around fort collins and greeley. friday's high 23. 26 saturday. into the 30s for sunday and monday. good morning. looking forward to that. boy, outside today we have seen i-70 as our biggest and busiest commute. everywhere else in town looking clear. speeds on the high side. we are seeing fog to the west also snow developing across that i-70 corridor. so if you are headed into the high country today, do take note. but if you are waking up this morning and you are wondering, okay, to i need to plan for a snowy morning commute? the answer is no. if you are in and around the metro area. you don't have to plan for sun glare delay typically on the eastbound routes. today a sun glare factor of 2. two things. the partly cloudy skies and the fog to the west. for the most part 6th avenue, our drive on 285 as well as i- 76 is clear. 36 to boulder looks good. across i-70 we've got two eastbound crashes. one earlier delay on the approach to colorado boulevard, and now a new crash coming in right on the approach to the northfield stapleton exit. we have clocked our speeds in we are following two developing news stories this morning. the first out of new york state. 17 miners are stuck in an elevator 900 feet below the surface. they are waiting on a crane to pull all of those miners out. >> yeah, they think they can bring them out two or three at a time. another story from paris. police say a man tried to attack a police officer outside a police station. police killed the man. he was wearing apparently a fake explosive device. they think that this could have been a terrorist attack. we will have updates on those up in just a couple of minutes. 9news 6 a.m.
