a blessing to her. >> reporter: florida is home to the first homegrown zika cases in the states. governor rick scott said he'll travel to washington the first day congress gets back from recess pushing them to approve money to help fight the virus. many places are already preparing. in baltimore johns hopkins medicine is opening a comprehensive zika center where patients can get any kind of zika related treatment and support they need. erica edwards, nbc news. also today the centers for disease control and prevention reported the first known case of a person without unknowingly transmitting that virus to a sexual partner. we are learning more about a lakewood mother's death and the sacrifice she made to save her young child. 35-year-old chelsea russell died of heart failure rescuing her son in lake powell. the 2-year-old fell off a house boat tuesday. russell dove in to save him. the toddler was found floating on top of his mother alive. time outdoors and was passionate about her job as an attorney in denver. this colorado state judge remembers the intern a few years ago. >> it's got to be a mother's first instinct to think of saving a child rather than herself and that's obviously what she did. she was rescuing her child, not surprising that she would jump in to do, that absolutely. >> he went on to describe russell as enthusiastic, an outgoing person who loved he russell leaves behind a husband and two young children. the u.s. government is looking at limiting how fast trucks, buses and other large vehicles can travel on our nation's lows. the new proposal know no americans among the dead or the injured. back to you. civil protection officials in italy say 238 people have been rescued. again a state funeral honoring the quake victims is scheduled tomorrow. a local denver restaurant is doing what they can to help victims hit earthquake. the owners of the restaurant are serving up an amatrice signature pasta dish donating half the proceeds to relief efforts in that area. >> traditional pasta from the town really hit hardest by this earthquake, just i mean to raise awareness and we're donating half of the cost of each dish sold to a great i think everything wipeds down after about 8:00, 9:00 in the city. you can see mother nature is trying to make up her mind, sunshine here, darker clouds in the distance and we've seen a couple stronger thunderstorms pushing throughout parts of the metro area. you can see everything pushing from the west tracking off to the east of one particular cell in yuma county was originally a severe cell that. downpours, lightning, strong wind and watching for a bit of hail. another cell east of grover in weld county. in the metro those storms trying to fire up around the foothills in evergreen and conifer and one east of the interstate moving east, should be near fort lupton momentarily. on futurecast 6:30, 7 p.m. a -- few pockets of showers, not a washout. 8:00 showers are pushing in from the west toward steamboat springs. overnight we might see rain and snow above 12,000 feet. we'll wind things down here overnight. you can see it's muggy across the eastern plains where the storms have street after an assessment was given for the economy. this is body camera video of a georgia police officer rescuing a man trapped in a burning vehicle. this happened at 3 a.m. august 16th. you can see the passenger's fear and agony on his face in the back of the car. what made this rescue so daring was that the impact from the crash actually bent the frame officer couldn't easily pull that man out of the car. you see there's an explosion. basically what the officer had to do was here he is doing it now. rebending the door frame to try to get the passenger out and then again as you saw in that video before, we're looping it over a couple times, there was an explosion. this fire was so intense that officers could feel the heat. they said it was unbearable from as far as 50 feet away. this was a rr the driver burned to death and the passenger seat was melted within minutes of that rescue. a man is in critical condition after a house explosion in wisconsin. officials in fitchburg got a firsthand look at when happened last night. emergency workers quickly closed off roads. a you'll of rubble is what's left of -- a pile of rubble is what's left of the home. a 57-year-old man was pulled from the debris and taken to the car and started walking. there were no emergency vehicles here yet at the time and i could see someone laying in the street and then the awful smell of gas. >> the house next-door also has significant damage. in all police say 23 homes were hurt or impacted rather by the explosion. a massive water main break in baltimore sent water spewing into the air. we love these videos in caused this to happen shortly after noon today, but it's clear the gusher created a tremendous traffic backup. crews are expected to be working on repairs for that geyser in the somewhat home free for the weekend. an awesome time lapse at telluride. you can see those higher peaks picking up on a little bit of snowfall. a stunning sight and a good reminder winter will be here before we know it. out here at the loveland ski area everything looks so green. that's where all that sunshine is, a few clouds in the far off you can see sunshine in the far off distance, a couple clouds. out west it's a different story, 79 at the airport, mid- to upper 70s in greeley, sterling, ray, burlington. we kept it cool in the mountains, about 56 in leadville, mid-60s in gunnison, telluride, 60 degrees with low 70s in cortez and durango. now at the airport temperatures in the upper 70s, mostly cloudy skies with the winds shifting out of the north about 5 miles around 23%. here in the 9news backyard our temps coming at us at about 77, a comfortable evening despite the fact we have some dark looking clouds overhead. i want to show you as far as the month of august goes, can you believe we're winding down on the summer season? we are in the running for the second dryest august ever. luckily we now have .22 in the books this month. so far our yearly over 10 inches and -- a little over 10 inches and about an inch shy on average from where we should be. kind of a welcome sight as these thunderstorms push in. we have some more sunny days on the horizon. we'll zoom into the metro area. i'll snow you a couple pockets i'm watching, one pushing off the foothills into parts of douglas county, another one in lakewood. it looks like this guy will weakening over brighton along highway 85 and i-76 moving out toward the i76 corridor. this guy really materializing, a lot of lightning and heavy down pours, this cell originally reporting some hail with it, too, now over the farmlands. that cell once over yuma county now into parts of nebraska, kansas, picking up about lightning strikes. here in the metro area a couple light showers and then i think things wind down. 49 in sterling, mid-50s in lamar, 40s in frisco, aspen, grand lake a frosty start, around 38 degrees saturday morning. i'll time it out so you can plan the rest of your evening. at 5:00 shows showers one or two moving throughout the metro area, but they're gone like 8:00 perhaps a few more pushing in across northeastern colorado and then we're done. tomorrow morning we wake up, a bit of sunshine around the city and a little fog across the far eastern plains. by afternoon we'll watch for round 2 pushing into the city. a couple possibly strong storms moving in around 4:00, 5:00. all you folks at sports authority field, if you're get messy. it will be brief. it looks like everything pushes out in time for the game day forecast. by 10:00 tomorrow evening everything starts to move out and i don't anticipate any severe storms tomorrow. i think that mainly will be confined out in chicago and minneapolis. 83, so a little toastier tomorrow and we'll keep warming things up, back to the summer weather a lot of folk like, pretty isolated. we'll stay in the 80s in sterling and ray, close to 90 in lamar. around the metro area 60s, 70s for the foothills. around the city a lot of folks in the 80s, similar setup in northern colorado, so here's what i'm thinking. kickoff is at 7:00. i think the storms will be brief and most likely be before kickoff. temperatures not too shabby arou hopefully we're coming off the field with a win. the numbers will be about 10 degrees cooler. as far as we are looking at into the month of september, it's going to be here before we know it. i wanted to give you a little update on what the climate prediction center is thinking as far as temperatures go. a good chunk of the western side of the country will be looking at potential for above average temperatures including eastern plains, it's also going to be toasty in parts of the southeast as well. precip, equal chances in the city, dry out there in the pacific northwest and southeast across the gulf coast states. planning forecast looking a little something like this. isolated storms on tap tomorrow, temps warming to the 80s by sunday. overall it looks a bit dry. we might still have a couple isolated storms firing up in that's the case sunday as well. tuesday it looks a little wetter, 90 on wednesday. why not? we'll be close to that thursday into friday, a chance for a storm here and there thursday, but as we head in toward your labor day weekend it looks fantastic, those numbers returning to the upper 80s, lots of sunshine. maybe you're going up to the high country and doing yvpy goal... some say you can accomplish just about anything. that's exactly what happened at the some say you can accomplish just about anything. that's what happened at the campus of the charter school child development center. volunteers spent six hour building a playground from scratch. this playground serves a lot of kids with special needs, so teachers asked the kid who would make their ideal playground. a nonprofit called kaboom designed their playground. >> a playground is one of the best places to learn. we're able to provide real opportunity to practice fine motor and play activities. >> it was grown out of the school child development center serving colorado kids over 70 years. kids will get to play on the new playground next week. for those who get nervous traveling, airports can be stressful. in denver dia's therapy dogs there are a lot more pups on duty. dia has nearly doubled the size of its canine air force therapy squad. you can meet the new squad members at dia today on level 5 at the jefferson terminal. these squad members are trained to offer help to nervous travelers and the manager of the volunteer program hopes to grow the program even more due to its success. >> the idea of the program is to offer stress reli work at the airport. the airport is a very stressful environment. it can be a very stressful environment and these dogs offer a sense of calmness to those that they encounter. >> there are 26 different breeds of dogs on the squad that can be spotted at dia wearing blue and black checkered vests. if you're looking for something to do with the family this weekend, your best option is one of colorado's four national parks. there's actually 13 sites they're free through sunday. yesterday marked the 100th anniversary for the national the east thunder, lightning possible lakewood, denver up toward broomfield, potential for grapple or small hail. these storms have turned severe in weld county, but they move quickly, so the warnings
