Tonight the storm still has winds of 110 miles per hour. However, it is still expected to bring a dangerous storm surge and a foot of rain to communities along the co overnight into saturday. Florida narrowly avoided a direct hit. At times math throughs eye was only a short distance offshore matthews eye was only a short distance offshore. It never made landfall. To the north of matthew a wall of water known as a storm surge has been building all day. Reporter this is what storm surge looks like. Its a fast moving fast rising a large section of floridas east coast around Daytona Beach has lost power. Nearly 1 Million People around Daytona Beach are in the dark tonight. 100,000 others in orlando are also without electricity. The center of matthew is about 70 miles south of savannah, georgia, tonight. Intense rain has soaked that city all evening. Transformers have been exploding leaving those who did not evacuate in tornadoes tonight. In South Carolina the water in Charleston Harbor is 3 feet higher than normal. That water will continue to rise as both the hurricane moves closer and high tide is reached at 1 a. M. Its expected the flooding along the coast of South Carolina could be even worse than the catastrophic done during record setting storm last october. Matthew is a very rare hurricane in many ways. It became the longest major hurricane to form after 5 on the all time list staying at least a category 3 for just over seven days. Also matthew had a pressure so low only two named hurricanes to ever hit florida could match it. They were andrew and donna. Hurricane experts are also looking at how matthew is following a similar path to a couple other storms, david in 1979 and floyd in 1999. 1979s hurricane david also hugged the florida coast similar to matthew. Now the universitys chancellor is responding to students who say recent messages about race make them feel unsafe. The free speech wall is not maintained or managed by university staff. Controversial messages began when someone crossed out the word black in black lives matter. Them thursday a message written across several wall panels included lyrics to the song guilty of being whit threat that caught the universitys attention. One lyric included the word lynched. The southeastern quadrant of this storm system is it really lacking afar as rainfall is really lacking as far as rainfall. However, the moisture is rolling inland along the i95 corridor from charleston to savannah, extremely heavy amounts on the interstate. Thus far only several hours into this event were close to 4 inches in a lot of locations, about 1 1 2 inches in up as the storm system potentially looks to barrel in within the next 12 hours or so right there along the coast line. Still a cat 2. That means sustained winds 105 miles per hour. Its moving directly north as we speak, but it does look like it will take that hook pushing through North Carolina as we go toward saturday evening dropping down to a cat 1 and then fully being offshore by sunday morning. It takes that turn, kind of that uturn, so to speak, drops down to just a Tropical Storm still going to be something well keep a close eye on because the damage is not done yet. Were still not only anticipating some pretty incredible storm surge out there, some spots potentially seeing 11 feet of water coming in, just walls of water with this monstrous storm as well as the rain thats falling basically from wilmington south toward charleston into savannah looking easily at close to a foot of water.
