gold. the americans continue to lead in both overall and gold medals. meanwhile, jamaica won its first two rio golds last night and tonight with elaine thompson and usain bolt claiming the titles of world's fastest woman and man. and south africa won its first gold tonight with wayde van niekerk's world record performance in the 400 meters. it was also a tremendous sunday for great britain today. five golds and three silvers across cycling, and tennis with andy murray winning a second straight singles title. and there was goal from justin rose in golf's return. and we'll leave you tonight with the first olympic golf medal ceremony since one was presumably held at glen oak hill country club in st. louis back in 1904. 112 years later it was time to cue up "god save the queen." sweden's henrik stenson wins silver. and america's matt kuchar wins bronze. ? ? ? >> so that'll do it for us. ryan seacrest coming up in late night. and tomorrow on the "today" show two of the biggest american stars in rio, michael phelps and katie ledecky will join matt and ? olympic superstars in rio on this sunday. he's super fast - but american justin gatlin couldn't golden moments for a couple of olympic superstars on this sunday in rio. he is super fast, justin gatlin couldn't beat the fastest man in the world today. in gymnastics, american sweetheart simone biles won her third rio gold medal in the vault final, she clinched the top spot by a wide margin over athletes from russia and switzerland. >> swimmer ryan lochte and three other american swimmers say they were robbed at gunpoint last night. it happened as they were village in a taxi. the suspects pulled out guns and told the swimmers to get on the ground. the details, plus some perspective on phelps' retirement, and the story of an olympic runner from colorado. ? to be outside running. >> reporter: you've got to put in the miles, even when the blue skies are fickle. spending a lifetime in colorado, means emma coburn is ready for any training day. inches, and we had a 14 or 15- mile run to do. >> reporter: think of it as extreme playing outside. >> growing up, we would climb 14ers, and backpack and mountain bike and do all sorts of colorado sports, but we were never a family of runners. >> reporter: the coburns were definitely not a sit on the couch family. >> we had a family rule, you had to do three sp my sister and i did volleyball, cross country, and track. >> reporter: there wasn't much competition for all of those tightened teams. >> i had 90 kids in my class. never had tryouts for sports, every kid was just allowed to compete in anything they wanted. >> reporter: emma would take state, but didn't think much beyond 1a track, until a high school coach made the was the steeple chase. we're not driving all the way. why don't you do the steeple chase? >> reporter: that worked out well. she now has the fastest time in the country. just breaking the american record again. a newcomer in london, she finished of the. emma coburn is expecting a lot more in rio, and many more olympics to come. >> it's been a really great ride so far. i hope i have a lo still. i hope i'm in it for another decade. so far, it's been really the purse. >> hey friends in colorado, i'm bringing home a lot of souvenirs. i'm cheryl preheim. 9news. in other news, new york police say reports of gu nevertheless, flights to that airport from dia and every other airport are on hold. police evacuated terminal 8 and terminal 1 after the initial reports, but the port authority says there was no evidence of gunfire, meaning no bullet shells were found. there is a larger police presence at jfk and laguardia. two flights from dia to jfk are delayed until after midnight. a man is in critical building collapsed in elizabeth. the man and his wife were tearing down a shed, on columbine trail when the roof fell on him. the man in his late 50s was airlifted to a hospital. the wife was walking around after the accident, and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. a vigil honored those killed and still missing from an apartment explosion in among the eight unaccounted for. at this point, they don't know what caused the explosion on thursday. it is still under investigation. in the middle of the day in broad daylight police say four people robbed a dispensary in denver. this happened just before 2:00 this afternoon. on east yale, just west of monica parkway. police say they're looking for three men whose faces were covered and also a woman. they did not provide any suspects. at left one of hem had a -- at least one of them had a gun. aurora police are also searching for a suspect tonight who they say was involved in a shooting earlier this afternoon. the gunfire began around 5:00 this evening in the parking lot of the aurora town center. that's on east alameda. police say one person is in serious condition in the hospital, but is expected to survive. investigators have also identified the shooter and say the shooter likely knew the victim. so far, officers have not made an arrest. milwaukee police had to use person shot in a second night of violent protests. police in riot gear tried to break up the crowd throwing things the street there. this is all tied to the death of 23-year-old sylville smith. police say an officer pulled him over because he was behaving suspiciously. smith ran, then turned and pointed a gun at the officer chasing him. when he didn't drop his gun as night's riots. the wisconsin governor activated the national guard in case milwaukee police need help. >> the answer is not going to solve anything, because you burned this down, so what's going to happen the next day? >> last night was unlike anything i've seen in this city. i hope i never see it again. we're seeking for the city to be calm tonight and for the rest of the summer. >> the ofr was wearing a body camera. the neighborhood wants to see the images it captured. police say state investigators now have that video. in georgia, a $10,000 reward will go to anyone who can help find this man. investigators say roysheem deeds killed tim smith last night. he got out of his patrol car to talk to deeds, and that's when officer. he died at the hospital. officer smith leaves behind three children. there will be a road closure over night at part of the construction on i-25 on arapahoe road. the same goes for the southbound on ramp to 25 from arapahoe. work on this project is expected to last for about two years. it is arguably the most annoying bug on the planet, so wh dedicated to the mosquito. >> gorgeous sunset. lewis winegardener said a little bit of drama going on across the rocky mountains national park. 90degrees in downtown denver today. same in sterling, ray, lamar too. upper 70s in gunnison. another hot one to the west. once again, we've been keeping a close eye on high fire danger across the western slope with a couple of wildfires burning out there. tapping into the heat for the 90-degree days. plus, watching for a couple more storms midweek. then a huge cool off coming in for the tail of the week into next weekend. right now, it's been pretty quiet all day long. unfortunately, not the case across parts of the gulf coast, where they have been dealing with the storm system that has stayed stagnant for the past several days. the good news it's starting to weaken just a bit, and will be pushing to the north and east, across parts of the north midwest. also, down there in houston, looking at heavy rains as well. so far out there in louisiana, the entire state truly has been under water but this spot, watson, picking up 31 inches of rain since about thursday of last week. i want to put it into somewhat perspective for you. beginning of this year. we certainly could use this. while i mentioned the storm system is starting to weaken, unfortunately, they're going to be tapping into a subtropical moisture fire hose essentially, that's once again taking direct aim at parts of louisiana, moving up throughout the ohio river valley. st. louis, chicago, going to be getting in on possibly an additional 3 to 5 inches of rainfall from this evening, to about wednesday or so. you can see that stalled out front, and it's for us out in the west, it's been all about high pressure. that's what's been keeping us nice and dry. we've been watching those nice summer temperatures. upper 80s, low 90s. tomorrow, we will be watching a quick disturbance riding in on the northwesterly flow. possibly, a couple of isolated storms, not everyone will get in on the action, but you might find a brief little downpour, which might be nice to see. this evening, we'll cool things off to 59. along the eastern plains, a little chill area up in the mountains in the 30s and 40s. the rest of tonight looks pretty good. tomorrow morning, you're already seeing that cloud cover push in across the west. we start off the morning with sunshine. it quickly is replaced with a few clouds by the early afternoon. by 5:00, 6:00, a couple of showers pushing into weld, morgan counties, and those quickly fizzle out about 10:00 p.m., we're done with it at least for tomorrow anyway. tomorrow, just a couple of degrees warmer than this afternoon. about 93 in denver. we'll go with the heat ou the west as well. with some 70s. mainly in the mountains as well as the foothills. upper 80s, low 90s, that is the name of the game as we kick off this new workweek. we're going be to much with aing for really temperatures flirting with the upper 80s, low 90s, with those typical isolated afternoon storms tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. then a big cool off pushes in. right now, it looks like this storm system dives in from the north, not only bringing in bringing us so much much needed rain. you guys are about a month away from the official start to fall. but mother nature has been giving us these nice little tastes. >> little doses. >> nice and cool in the evenings, we like that. a bronco known for his geeky side showed it off today. super bowl mvp vaughn miller put on the geek squad uniform at the best bay in lone creek. he's been training for this role since april. so the transition was pretty easy. >> i really have a strong passion for technology. a strong passion for football, and whenever opted to be great at somebody -- you want to be great at receivers, a former buff and a former ram made pretty impressive debuts. nelson spruce who went undrafted, lit it up in his first week as a pro. rams receivers. hollywood higgins also scored a touchdown in his first preseason game. no baseball player is playing better than charlie blackmon. only up with team is playing worse than the rockies. swept in philadelphia, despite the super heroics of charlie. blackman belted two home runs out of the park today. that's five homers in three games in philadelphia. it's also eight in his last nine games. nine gamin batting average of .548, thanks to 23 hits, 14 runs scored, and 14 runs batted in. absolutely incredible. then there's the rest of the rockies. not so good. colorado had 4 errors today, giving them 7 for this series. philly won the series and the sweep, and won today's game 7- 6. colorado has now lost 7 of their last 8. >> certainly not clicking, but, never quit no matter what the circumstances or the odds are. still fight to the last out, and you know, that's what we've been doing. we've come up on the short end, but we don't quit. everyone in the united states stops what their doing when michael phelps swims. but though, does it again. he is again, the fastest man on planet earth. former cu buff and world laps. on the fourth lap, she was caught and passed by three runners. her time, good enough for fourth making her an automatic qualifier. finally from the 100 to the 1500 to that marathon. boulder's madigan finished 6th. her time of 2 hours and 25 minutes was fast, but just not fast enough. we did she ran a 5 30-mile for 26.2 miles. only good enough for 6. >> i can't even wrap my mind around that. that is an insane amount of talent, still very proud. >> it would take me about 12 minutes to run a mile. so they're annoying, no one likes them, we have sprays and candles to try and keep them festival for the mosquito. >> there sure is, it's happening in russia. and comes complete with competitions like mosquito hunting, and who can get the most mosquito bites. eww. a jury counts, there's a prize for the most bites. this year's winner was a 9-year- old girl. she had 43 bites. apparently zika is not a concern there. there's only been a few cases, and they've been coming from people overseas. not even those kids. >> eww, seriously. welts on the leg and a trophy. switch gears. weather, weather. so we're going to be looking at a hot day in the 90s tomorrow. upper 80s, low 90s for most of the workweek. there's that storm, friday, saturday, bringing us hopefully
