Says Paterson injured public service with grace and resolve to help others and that he left the world in Washington County a better place the 21st Annual Arkansas Poll found that more Arkansans regarded themselves as Republicans University of Arkansas political science professor Jeanine Perry is in charge of the Arkansas poll. Partisanship and ideology finding that's a question that we ask every year and this is our 21st year so. It's nice to be able to look at things over time and one of the things that stood out to me this year is that when we ask a sample of Arkansans generally speaking do you consider yourself a Republican a Democrat an Independent or what we got a record high just marginally different from last time but still a record high of 38 percent of respondents identifying as Republican 25 percent as Democrat which would be the lowest I guess a tie for the lowest in 21 years and 29 percent independent of course we've been voting more Republican since about 2010 and it was quite a considerable shift there but here's the 1st time that we really see the evidence in the way people are identifying themselves in the question on the poll so that was an interesting finding and it matches of course with seeing ourselves as more conservative to moderate rather than as liberal So that's one of the longer term patterns I found myself looking to right away. He says although our Kansans count themselves as Republicans are often at odds with the state's Republican political leaders in light of the closer identification of average Arkansan to the Republican Party. And I think that party's usual identification I suppose with fewer gun restrictions rather than more what we find at the same time in a quite a long battery of questions about gun restrictions in Arkansas the same kinds of things that have been mentioned nationally is that Arkansans like Americans nationwide support quite a favorably of gun restrictions including required background checks at gun shows and for private sales mental health screening and treatment greater funding for that red flag laws licensing to purchase a gun and that kind of thing Arkansan showed very strong support for all of those measures despite the fact that we were more likely to identify Republicans this year as Republicans this year than any time previously and also despite the fact that our Republican legislature has done more interested in recent legislative sessions with reducing sort of loosening gun regulations and that I just thought was an interesting finding which is part of of course Arkansas history of there being a certain complicated quality to how elections translate into public policy and what it exactly is that we want it's it's hard to say it's complicated sort of a philosophical question that sort of ties in with a poll but not directly that. Even the Repub. Kansans have been more willing to say the Republican when they. Were seeing initiative votes they tuned half their Republican legislators coming unglued with some of the results yes which has led the Republican legislature to try to restrict direct democracy not just here to make it more difficult you know it's used more difficult not just here but that's actually been true around the country in the last couple of years but you know really I think this might speak to something a lot of your listeners will identify with which is you know this whole idea of us being really more of a a purple people than a red or a blue people elections are blunt instruments political parties are gone instrument and while on the one hand we may want looser gun restrictions in one context we might want stricter gun constrict restrictions than another and it's not always the case that it least. The political parties and you know elections every 2 or 4 years it doesn't always gets translated in the way that we want it might also want We've seen this before we didn't do direct democracy measures this time but. We in the past as you say have supported medical marijuana legalization and we've supported casino gambling and we've supported twice in a very short period an increase to the minimum wage hardly things that most people would associate with the rep of Republican Party at least on the surface so. Again where we're complicated there are intricacies and new wants to our policy preferences that don't always get displayed in what elections produce and what the winners of those elections produce on our behalf. Although our Kansans favor the hiring of more border agents in the construction of a border wall nearly 80 percent of them agreed when asked whether immigrants living in the u.s. Illegally should be given a chance to become citizens if they meet certain requirements you know who say the economy is the most important concern facing or consulted a followed by health care and education Perry says that ironically an issue that was at the top of last year's poll virtually disappeared this year something I fielded a few questions on as we actually got the national attention last year for showing a significant increase in the proportion of our respondents who were concerned about climate change. We thought at the time however that that might be an outlier we had a higher than average portion of our respondents indicate that they had. A very high levels of education and that's often correlated with perspectives on climate change so I wondered if it was an outlier or if indeed even you know conservative Republicans and or conservative leaning independents. Are experiencing a sense of alarm about climate change what we see this year is that indeed our number settled sort of back to where they were in the past most Arkansans don't think that climate change is going to affect them significantly in their lifetime and most Arkansans don't seem particularly alarmed or concerned about that area public policy so that was a little surprising I was wondering if it was going to play out again or if it was just a bit of noise that was a consequence of a. Glitch in our sample last year and I think it was actually the latter. Vary from the responses to the one odd question to be interesting but a disturbing trend something I was actually discussing with friends and then realized I had asked often on about over the years and could actually report is tucked into one of the final pages of the report and that's that we have asked over the last 5 years or so really for research purposes for some scholars over in the journalism school here this question How many days in the past week did you read a daily newspaper and I hadn't really thought about tracking it over time I do so many other things over time that's what I'm always interested in but here I sort of accidentally have 5 years of data on that question and in 2014 the percentage of people who had read a newspaper 0 times in the last week was only 25 percent so most of us were still encountering a newspaper on a regular basis. But the percentage of people who were reading a daily newspaper 0 times in the last week this year was up to half of our correspondents so it could be we know from national polling that people are getting news from other sources but we also know from national polling that most of us liberals and conservative are having a hard time distinguishing facts from opinion the Pew Research Center has done a lot of interesting research in this regard and I can't help but wonder if there's not a a correlation there there's not a relationship between a reduction and really intensive entanglement with a daily newspaper by a large portion of us and if that's going to be reduced probably so is our comprehension of the facts of life around us so that was an interesting sort of accidental finding that we reported. Another trim that smells more expense and bother for the Poles were growing number of people who took the phone cords and depend on cell phones instead we have slowly increased as have other people in projects nationwide the proportion of our respondents who are interviewed by cell phone if we don't see that of course we get a sample that significantly older. Than than the electorate and certainly than the general population that were truly trying to capture so we're up this year I believe was up to 40 percent of our respondents are replying via cell phone and consider that their main form of communication so we try to accommodate that. That's still lower than the average person in Arkansas you know would find him or herself using a cell phone it does mean that our sample tends to be older than average Arkansan But of course that is the average voter So it's one of those ways that even if it's not how we started the project we tend to capture a really pretty strikingly. Accurate representation of the average Arkansas voter perhaps more than we capture an accurate representation of average Arkansan. Soldiers throughout American history and we kind of grow a little bit more each and every year I'm hoping to make this one of our biggest if not. One of our biggest events of the year. And so what we have this year's we have soldiers that are going to come out they will represent the Revolutionary War War of $1812.00 the u.s. Mexican War American Civil War and World War One and so they will have to table set up with uniforms a gear and equipment that the soldiers would have used during those. Those wars and basically just be able to talk to the public and you know point out their their uniforms and their Quitman and just answer any types of questions. That the visitors might have about uniforms equipment guns that that's one of the things so despite the time differences he says uniforms equipment and experiences of the soldiers were quite similar. The uniforms are you know primarily you're going to you're going to deal with. Especially me in between those timeframes that I just mentioned you're going to deal with changes in colors of uniforms. But otherwise equipments going to you know more modern rifles and things like that but the rest of the field gear that the soldiers are going to carry is pretty much going to stay pretty close to that entire time frame and I would guess probably being in the military probably hasn't changed much from way back when and it hasn't changed much the same soldiers you know they enlisted in the in the military for the same reasons you know 150 years ago as they do today and the excitement is still the same the loneliness is still the same and so is I'm sure that the fear as well so. Those the same motivations that move soldiers to. Fight for the. Revolutionary cause and 776 is still the same reasons why soldiers live today bounce off says a timeline is a borrowed idea that the military timeline I have from my 1st time I ever saw was about 6 years ago and I've been wanting to do that and get that established here it's a great way for the for for kids and locals right here you know we don't have any World War One parks around here or any revolutionary war parks around here and you very rarely hear or see anything about the war of 1812 or the married u.s. Mexican War so great time to be able to come out here and tie this park to same experience of all u.s.
