people on the street and asked her parents how she could help.>> ashley brave the chill of this december evening tuten to a community garden at a food bank. she and neighborhood children whose help she has enlisted are pulling out summer plans to prepare for receiving. they grow fresh produce for the food bank to distribute to the homeless and low income families.>> i have always seen people in the streets and i always felt like i could help them.>> reporter: this community garden is one project that has sprouted from small hands with helping hearts. a non-prophet started by ashley what she was told she was too young to volunteer at other nonprofits. her mother suggested she started her own charity.>> she doesn't have any perceived limitations. she doesn't think there is anything she cannot do. or a reason she shouldn't or couldn't. it is very inspiring.>> reporter: it all started two years ago when she was six during a trip to the grocery store with her father. she noticed the homeless people who were around.>> i wanted to sell hot chocolate for a dollar. and help the homeless. instead of buying toys and make care packages.>> reporter: the first year she raised $260. the second year $500. this year $6700. aided by a gofundme account enough not only for care packages but a first -- a spaghetti meal for those in need last weekend. last month ashley received the hayward youth achievement hall of fame award for innovation and volunteerism.>> i did not really want it. i was just happy to be there.>> reporter: she tells me she doesn't volunteer to get recognition. she is embarrassed by the attention. she says her nonprofit gives other children opportunities to help. a small group with big ambitions.>> it does not matter your size or your age >> you can do anything. >> reporter: ashley is in the third grade. her next project is to start a volunteer club at her school in january. in march when she is nine she is asking friends to donate to an animal shelter in lieu of birthday presents.>> she is just amazing.>> reporter: very inspirational. her parents find it humbling to have a daughter like that. san francisco increasing the number of beds at two shelters >> the mayor said the next-door shelter on polk street will add 50 beds. the multiservice insert will make room for 25 more people. she is honoring the promise of mayor ed lee to move 1000 people off the streets by the end of winter. the city announced the opening of 70 new housing units for homeless veterans at the auburn hotel south of market. james kim is growing a list of candidates for running for mayor. a special election will feel the seat all of the death of mayor lee. whoever is elected will serve until january 2020. kim wants to continue her work on education childcare and
