Where the shooting took place at lawrence expressway. New details from ktvus jana katsuyama. Jana, still an active investigation at this hour. Reporter it is, julie and frank. That suspect received life threatening injuries we are told by police. We are still waiting for the condition. But take a look behind me. You can see where that dark pickup truck underneath the safeway sign has been there for eight hours now when the chase came to an end here on Stevens Creek boulevard. We understand this is the first officerinvolved shooting of the year. Evidence markers and San Jose Police vehicles surrounded the suspects dark pickup truck. Bullet holes were clearly visible where the gunfire hit the windows and the drivers side door. Witnesses saw the truck being pursued by half a dozen Police Vehicles on Stevens Creek boulevard. The truckers had sparks and everything flying out of them. The tires were gone. Reporter the chase began about five miles away when they got a call 1 30 p. M. About a naked man on east court and valerie drive in campbell. My friend saw the car on the side. And then she started chasing us. Reporter the woman said she and a few other families ran to the park across the street. And then he started screaming come back, come back. Reporter neighbors believe the man rented a room in the area and had seen him earlier. There was a man standing there and he waved and i waved. I went up to my job. Reporter when they arrived at the neighborhood, the man got into his vehicle. He tried to flee the scene and rammed a police car. Reporter during the chase the suspects vehicle collided with another car before stopping at the safeway parking lot. I saw smoke coming out of the engine. Then as i pulled up closer i started to hear popping sounds, which i thought was gunfire. Our officers attempted to make the car stop taking the suspect into custody. During that encounter most fired at the suspect. He was struck at least once. Reporter back here live on Stevens Creek boulevard you can see this is probably going to remain closed for a while. They have vehicles all across the street on that side of the lane. There are still many questions. We are asking police if the man was armed with any kind of weapon at the time he was shot in this still trying to get down to the details of this interview. All the officers who were involved, so it could be quite a while. We are waiting for an update on the suspects condition against life threatening injuries. Any of these officers involved in firing on this vehicle will be put on paid administrative leave while they investigate the shooting. Yeah, it must have been quite some sight with the bullet holes we saw. I mean i cant imagine. Its a good thing no one was hurt in this incident today. Jana, thank you. Now to palo alto where an suv tried to avoid a traffic stop, hit a bike rider this afternoon and seriously injured her. The crash happened at homer avenue and emerson street right downtown. The people in the car took off running. That touched off an allout search that lasted for hours. Weve got new information now from debora villalon. They had barely made contact with it when it hit the woman on the bike down at the intersection. Then it dragged her about 30 feet to this point here. She went to the hospital with major injuries. What happened next sent the neighborhood into turmoil. Reporter from sky fox some tense moments on a palo alto street as Police Officers searched house to house, block by block for several suspects who jumped from a hitandrun vehicle and ran. I saw some helicopters buzzing around and saw some vehicles. Reporter residents south of the University Avenue spread the word. That there is a bicyclist hit. And now they were injured apparently. And that bicyclist was stopped just a short distance away. A Palo Alto Police officer tried to pull it over for a vehicle code violation. When he turned on his bike and they immediately spread away as the Patrol Officer made that same term. When they made the suspects vehicle no longer a sight. However he did locate a cyclist that was injured on the roadways. Reporter a second officer found the car around the corner. All five occupants on the run. Two men were found and arrested swiftly. Three others escaped, which launched the man hunt. After almost two hours of searching, a police dog found a man and two women hiding in this unlocked backyard shed. Investigators believe they have everyone involved in a hit and run. Everybody runs back down here and i ride my bike every day to work, so you know it is scary. Police are still looking into what charges they will face and why they fled the traffic stop, but they are gratified the cyclist will make it. We just found out the bicyclist is expected to survive, which is something we are having thankful for. Officers went up and down the street looking for the security cameras on homes and businesses that might show the car hitting the bicyclist. And the officer didnt round that corner in time to see it as they just saw the aftermath. But they would stop as did many people who were in the area and they saw what happened and they ran to help her. Well thankfully as you said shes going to survive, but we will have major injuries. Some of those companies are right here in the bay area. When i heard about this wall i knew there was an opportunity to use our leverage, no matter how small it might be to make a stand. Reporter Berkeley Council members offered the measure. Bartlett says effective immediately, berkeley will divest from companies that work on the wall and the city will not do any business with those companies. New information tonight on the shooting that shut down northbound highway 101 in East San Jose last night. Investigators now say that attack was gang related. Authorities said someone inside a white Dodge Charger opened fire on a black Acura Integra near story road. A 17yearold boy was shot in the face and in the back, but he is expected to survive. To confirm it is gang violence. Both parties were involved, they are known gang affiliates. Investigators say they are working with San Jose Police to find a shooter. The people in the Dodge Charger, they were wearing black bandannas over their faces. Chp said altogether there were more than 100 shootings on the bay area freeways. Henry lee heard from the chp today on their efforts to make an arrest. Reporter the chp said 17 people have been arrested in connection with bay area freeway shootings since 2015. Already this year there have been 19 shootings. Last year there were 55. The level of violence on our freeways and the highways are unacceptable. However it is important to note most of these incidents have not resulted in any injuries. Reporter and still Authorities Say they are making headways with the rest. Many cases involve gang members targeting rivals. But chp says while an arrest may not be immediate, they will happen. And they warn those that think they could hide on the dynamic freeway and environment could commit with their crimes chp is on high alert and we will catch you. Reporter among those in custody are three young men accused of a shooting that killed Demarcus Doss on interstate 80 in richmond. Investigators say the suspects found the right minivan, but ended up shooting two people they were looking for. A teenager opened fire on the minivan thinking the woman inside was her target, but she was not it. Disease was killed while shielding a different woman. An offduty vallejo policewoman was called into the description of dodge and the richmond officer stopped it within half an hour. Cameras did not play a role in any of the recent arrests. San pablo and pittsburgh have cameras on city streets and i 80 on highway 4. But its not clear who will pay for cameras in other cities.
