of all stripes and democrats need to wake up. >> developing news right now, a federal judge in new york has put a stop to part of the president's executive order banning some immigrants and foreign travelers from coming into the country. good evening everyone, i'm ross palombo. >> i'm cristina rendon. the aclu asked for a temporary stay of the order on behalf of two iraqi detained at -- iraqis detained at jfk airport. after a short hearing the judge ruled in their favor. it prevents some from being detained at u.s. airports today. >> that led to protests across the country. [ chanting ] about a dozen travelers were detained today at new york's jfk and protestors quickly marched in. from here stanford says a student who is legal and has a green card buzz held at jfk for about eight hours before being allowed to fly back to california finally. >> the "chicago tribune" reports at least a dozen people are being held at o'hare airport. demonstrators there interfered with traffic and president trump's order yesterday put a four month hold on admitting refugees into the united states and bars travelers from coming from syria and six other countries for at least 90 days. and in addition to the tensions here in the u.s., more travelers are being stopped abroad before boarding planes heading to america. [ cheering and applause ] >> outside of washington, d.c., demonstrators welcomed foreign passengers. there was word that a muslim family had been detained. virginia's democratic governor terry mcauliffe was quickly demanding answers about who was being held and why. [ chanting ] >> a san francisco airport is unclear how many people are being held in the limbo of detainment and afghan refugee family was detained yesterday and later released. today an attorney told ktvu it appears they include a 38-year- old iranian man and an elderly couple and possibly families from afghanistan and yemen. the attorney said all were traveling on visas that were legal before the president signed his executive order yesterday. our rob malcolm is live there now with the very latest with the protestors. rob? >> reporter: well, good evening. we're hearing from sources that anywhere from three to six passengers were detained here at sfo airport and meanwhile, 1,000 protestors gathered today at 3:00. they made their way to the departure level where they're now marching inside. the crowds at san francisco international airport mirrored others across the nation as they protested president donald trump's immigration plan. one here with her brother it hits close to home. >> as is syrian american who's muslim i feel it from all angles. no. stay where you are and die we're not going to help you. >> reporter: it would have banned siss of seven -- citizens of seven countries there entering the u.s. for at least the next 90 days. six were detained at sfo and for a seasoned politician, this was heart-breaking. >> kind of sick to my stomach as an american. >> reporter: even news that a federal judge granted a stay on deportations under president trump's immigration order, california's lieutenant governor was still miffed. >> because america that i love, america i fear is the america being manifested by this monarch. or at least the president is acting like a monarch through executive and we have to push back in a big way. >> reporter: across the town he visited a local mosque for afternoon prayers. the student from the republic of liberia is an engineer who works for the u.s. government. >> this country does not represent such as it is -- ideas proposed by donald trump. >> reporter: as protests continued at the airport two female iraqi women at least six months pregnant were admitted to mills pennsylvania medical center. after long flight from the uae. the news of the ban too much to take. >> and they were -- they found out that -- this law is going into effect and began to feel very worried. >> reporter: as agents stood watch of the hospital door. he found a message of hope on the doors of his mosque. >> we do not support the president's ban on muslims, your community is welcome here. your neighbors [ speaking foreign language ] >> reporter: and back here live. people continue to push back we're hearing lawsuits have been filed already against the federal government. and this protest that began here at 3:00 this afternoon was supposed to end at 6:00. the protestors are still here many of their voices being heard. guys? >> what are family members being told about those who are being detained. if they have any idea when they might be released if they will be released? if they're going to have to spend a day after day after the airport? what's the situation? >> reporter: yeah, the family members right now, ross, tell us they are in limbo and not sure of what's going on. they're talking to lawyers as for the two women that were at the hospital, their family members decline to talk to us on camera but a sid they are very -- but said they are veriers in. one of the woman was a german born iraqi with a green card from the u.s. and she's not sure whether or not she'll be sent back to her home country. >> all right, rob malcolm live for us tonight at sfo. thank you. hillary clinton just weighed in on twitter and also took a stand against president trump. saying quote -- i stand with the people gathered across the country tonight defending our values and our constitution. this is not who we are. as you just saw, legal residents and sheva holders from several muslim majority countries are already being affected by the measure. it's not clear what's going to happen. >> i suppose the u.s. government on the other side of the world but when i came here as a -- they said no. and they said -- i break the rules or do something wrong. i surprise by this. >> again, over the next three months president trump has directed the department of state and homeland security to review the vetting process used for anyone entering the u.s. and to come up with a list of countries that don't provide the necessary information properly to vet folks. earlier this week president trump told sean hannity that extreme vetting is needed to keep terrorists out of the united states. >> all over place. and these are people that we let in. we don't need this. all right? we don't need this. some people have come in with evil intentions. and you know, most haven't. i guess. but we can't take chances. >> there are exceptions to the president's temporary ban on refugees. though notably for christians and already several groups including the council on american islamic relations plans to file a federal lawsuit challenging the president's executive order next week. some of those countriesen the list are threatening their own travel bans against u.s. citizens now. in iran an official saying quote to defend the dignity of the great iranian nation, we will implement the principle of reciprocity until the removal of the insulting restrictions against iranian nationals. here at home, news that the ban may extend to foreigners with dual citizenship. the "wall street journal" says it's obtained a document from the state department and says people who originally came from the banned countries and now have dual citizenship will not be allowed into the country for at least 90 days. a journal says the ban doesn't apply to those who were born here in the u.s. the president of canada today voiced his support for immigrants and refugees. justin trudeau tweeted this photo of him -- photo of him greeting a syrian child at the toronto airport last year and wrote quote -- >> facebook's ceo mark zuckerberg issued a statement today about president trump's immigration order. zuckerberg said the effort to keep the country safe should be done by quote focusing on people who actually pose a threat. the 32-year-old billionaire said his grandparents came from europe and his wife's family were refugees and zuckerberg said that increasing law enforcement efforts would make americans less safe by diverting money. tim cook issued a letter to apple employees saying quote -- we've reached out to the white house to explain the negative effect on our co-workers and our company. apple would not exist without immigration let alone thrive and invite the way we do. -- innovate the way we do. >> google told its immigrant employees to cancel any travel plans outside of the u.s. they also advised them to consult with the company's human resources department if they're not currently in the u.s. that memo was first reported by bloomberg and the "wall street journal." the ceo told employees the note that at least one 187 google workers could be affected by trump's order. though it's not clear how many of these workers are currently traveling outside the u.s. >> meantime, twitter's ceo jack dorsey called the potential impact of his decision quote real and upsetting and goes on to say quote -- >> president trump's immigration policy is getting support in greece from a group of far right extremists. [ chanting ] bernie with the -- burning torches lit the night lie in athens as members of the party chanted greeks for greece. there was no comment from the white house on the demonstration. >> president trump signed three more executive orders this afternoon. the first requires a joint chiefs to submit a strategy within 30 days to defeat isis. another order will restructure the national security council. the third executive order creates new lobbying rules for members of the trump administration. now no white house official can register as a lobbyist for at least five years after leaving the government. it also permanently bans them from lobbying on behalf of a foreign government. fireworks are thought to be behind a house fire that displaced 11 people including fife children in the south bay. crews responded to a home on miami dry this afternoon just after 1:30. it took more than an hour to get the fire under control and smoke could be seen for miles around ask investigators say that the fire appears to have started outside the home but then quickly spread inside. firefighters say children were playing with fireworks near the home just before the flames broke out. no injuries were reported. on the east bay freeway it happened just before 12:30 this afternoon in award on northbound 880 at a street. the highway patrol says the semi-truck was carrying a load of heavy machinery when it suddenly hit the brakes. >> his machinery fell off his vehicle. weighing approximately 55,000 pounds. landed in the lane next to him. there was no damage to any other vehicle. >> the equipment left a 20-foot long scrape in the road and caltrans workers had to put in a patch. no one was hurt thankfully. and it's not clear exactly how all of this happened in the first place. republicans are full of hope and concern when it comes to replacing obamacare. coming up, what we're learning from new leaked tapes of a closed door meeting. plus another half court heave will be getting treatment at ufcsf next month. he was first diagnosed in 2012 and his oncologist says he doesn't expect significant side effects and says brown's prognosis is excellent. the governor is expected to maintain a full work schedule during his treatment. there's a new development tonight involving the so-called leaning tower of san francisco. a new city inspection of the millennium tower has found the building is safe for occupancy despite the building's 16 inches of settlement. the news comes even though the leaning skyscraper caused some strain on the building' foundation and its electrical systems. the new report found there was no evidence of what inspectors called quote life safety concerns. a crash sent her car into the creek next to niles canyon road a week ago and today more than 100 rescue workers continued their search to find her body. jada jenkins was on the way to visit friends when her car plunged into alameda creek. we have more now on today's push to kind the young woman. -- find the young woman. >> reporter: crews began showing up at dawn. shutting down niles canyon road between fremont and sunol for most of the day. >> what that morning is all about is recovery effort for jada jenkins who was traveling along this road on january 21st. >> reporter: investigators say 18-year-old jenkins was driving along niles canyon road saturday when her car collided with another car and plunged into the water. it was recovered over the course of the week and while crews found her shoes and even the driver's license, there's been no sign of jenkins since the crash. crews today divided the area along the alameda creek up into a grid and began searching. >> we have over 100 search and rescue personnel over ten cadaver dogs that are trained to just sniff different scents. we'll have drones, we'll have a helicopter. we'll have an airplane. it's -- a regional effort. >> reporter: teams say this massive effort has one goal. to bring some answers to the jenkins' family. >> it's not something that we do all the time. this is for the family. we're leer to support them. -- here to support them. they are out here and there's over 100 friends and family members out here. they're searching from mission to the bay. they're focusing on that while we focus on from mission into where the crash site was. >> reporter: two teams with one goal. to bring jada jenkins home. in fremont, christian catten, ktvu fox 2 news. all lanes of highway 37 reopened this morning in nevada. last sunday the california highway patrol closed it down between 101 and ratherton avenue boffos rear flooding there -- severe flooding there. on monday the chp only opened the eastbound lanes but this morning the westbound lanes were also reopened. the same part of the highway just closed earlier this month for other flooding. that mess took nearly a week to clear. contra costa's board of supervisors declared an emergency because of this storm damage. in just the first two weeks of january, storms caused an estimated $18 million in damages. it could take several more months though befo authorities get a more accurate total. and it was just a week ago we were talking about another system moving into the bay area. strong one, but thankfully we've had a lot of sunshine. a chance to dry out over the past few days and in fact temperatures have been warming up. you can see the highs from this afternoon ranging from the upper 50s in pacifica up towards 64. in san jose. santa rosa 61 and napa checked in 63-degrees so a very nice start to the weekend with mostly sunny skies for your saturday. as you can see here the big view out here in the pacific, there's actually a pretty active storm track but just depend on where it's being  directed and right now it's being pushed up to our north. that we have that dry weather pattern in place and still clear skies up and down a good portion of northern and central california you can't see right now with mostly clear conditions. it is chilly out there though. the current numbers out there and look at santa rosa 41 degrees and napa 42. walnut creek, 40. fairfield is 39 and san jose in the upper 40s and san francisco last check reporting 50 degrees. speaking of san francisco, looking out across the city out toward the bay bridge, lights and very nice out there for your saturday night with mostly clear skies. but definitely want to band-aid ill up fur tonight and tomorrow morning. take a look at the project lows first thing tomorrow morning. lower 30s for santa rosa and napa. san francisco 45 and san jose checks in 36 degrees. so off to a cold start. but the afternoon hours will be very nice out there. as we head into especially by 2:00 and 3:00. we're talking about 60s and a few neighborhoods approaching the 70-degree mark. more on that and also when rain chances resurface in the five day forecast. thanks mark. well, almost 30 rehabilitated saturatements are back loam along the -- sea turtles are back home along the atlantic coast. they released them on the coast of north carolina. the turtles were rescued after suffering cold water shock this winter and some of the crew members' kids got involved and you can see there they are about to put them on a slide that basically shoots them down into the water. >> that is a happy sight there. the cost of california's retiree health care has grown by more than $2 billion. >> up next, we'll explain the details released by the state comptroller's office. the fbi released a picture of a man wanted in a string of bank robberies across northern california. take a look, he's being nicknamed the khaki bandit. he's -- he's been wearing dark shirts as well as stocking caps or baseball caps. agents say he's robbed at least nine banks in areas including napa and walnut grove. the unfunded cost of providing health care and dental benefits to state retirees grew by nearly $2.5 billion this year. that's according to a state comptroller's office report. that brings the total cost of california's state retiree health care liability to around $76 billion. until recently the benefits were funded own a pay as you go basis. but a pay as you go plan on a $76 billion expense isn't suitable hayseeds. this month -- he says. this month state contracts require members to make contributions to their health care plans. >> even though small percentage of how much you prefund could bring down that long-term liability by quite a bit. >> the $2.5 billion growth is nearly $1.5 billion less than expected due to the low health care costs and fewer claims. some lucky california high school student are traveling to kenya to bring students there solar energy. at the state capitol today. six high school students from bakersfield, sacramento and san jose were celebrated for winning a statewide contest. they developed ideas on how to create and use more clean energy. they also helped build solar suitcases. those suitcases are able to charge computers and phones or power light. >> we sort of take for granted when we flip the switch, lights coms on. when -- lights come on. when our kids need to study that they have light. that's not true in other parts of the world. and our students are giving back. and helping out and learning about technology and engineering. >> well, they're leaving in early february and staying for about a week. they're bringing 100 solar suitcases to deliver to orphanages schools and medical clippics. still to come, protestors hit the streets of san francisco today over president reporter: in leaked tapes from a republican meeting, first reported by the "washington post," california congressman tom mcclintock summed up republican hopes and fears about replacing obamacare this way. quote -- we better be sure that we're prepared to live with the market we've created. that's going to be called trump care. republicans will own that lock stock and barrel. and we'll be judged in the election less than two years away. republicans are hearing from their constituents that they like some parts of the affordable care act. like making insurance companies cover pre-existing conditions and letting the dependents stay on the parents' health care plans until they're 26. but they are also hearing some middle class families are getting crushed by the high cost of premiums. they have to balance it all while not destabilizing the insurance market. >> i think the big hangup for them is to not get into the trap of rolling back coverage. if they end up with a plan that leads to many millions of more people not having health insurance, they could really end up in a political cul-de- sac from which it would be hard to extract themselves. >> reporter: president trump got the ball rolling within hours of being sworn in with an order directing government agencies to reevaluate provisions of the law they think are too costly but that order didn't get into the nitty- gritty which is where congress comes in. >> i think president is open to whatever we can pass that solves this problem. this is not the republicans' problem. this problem was caused by the democrat, we feel an obligation to fix and it we're committed to fix it. >> reporter: congressional leadership is set a goal of repealing and replacing obamacare by august. in washington, caroline shively, fox news. demonstrators were in san francisco today hitting the streets marring to protest many of president trump's executive actions including moving forward the keystone -- with the keystone xl pipeline. [ chanting ] this all started in the financial district at the bank of america building. a company that organizers say is participating in the pipeline. marchers also plan to stop at other banks. >> we're not going to stand for and it we will be here in the streets publicly letting you know and dissenting every single step of the way. >> demonstrators say they're also opposing oppression and state sanctioned violence. president trump spoke to russian president vladimir putin by phone today. the white house says they covered a wide range of topics concerning security and defeating isis. the kremlin says the two leaders also addressed quote restoring mutually beneficial trade and economic ties between business circles of the two countries. nearly three years -- three years ago you remember president signed an executive order imposing sanctions on russia after it invaded the ukraine. today marks the first day of the chinese new year. ♪ san francisco mayor ed lee helped kick off the year of the rooster this morning with an event in chinatown's ports mouth square. the chinese new year is also known as the lunar new year or the spring festival. celebrations here started in the 18 60s as a way to educate people about chinese culture. the parade and festival the largest celebration of asian culture outside of asia and celebrations are well underway in oakland's chinatown. plenty of people gathered to mark the occasion. as ktvu's amber league reports the festivities are happening in restaurant and homes and of course out on the streets. >> reporter: at closing time, workers at lg's supermarket on tenth street laid out fireworks to welcome the year of the rooster. >> they set off 100,000 firecrackers to chase away evil spirits. >> this is what you remember. or you carry on to the next generation. >> reporter: inside the market, a shrine is set up with offerings to a higher power. asking for a happy new year. >> in cantonese, the market's owner wishes for good health. special new year decorations and flowers are sold at street stands and vibrant colors like red gold and green are desirable. they represent hepness, posterity, and life. >> we decorate the houses. we -- we bring out the different lights. bring in colors. just to make the whole drab season into like a brighter and more festive time. >> reporter: at pee oweny restaurant people started getting here in the early evening on this night. a major part of the celebration is the dinner with family. three of them. >> everyone is going to go in death penalty directions, you go to college and new jobs and -- jobs and new careers and everyone spreads out. once year you remember to come back together and take care of each other. >> reporter: multiple courses are served and one popular dish is called punchoi served to a large bowl. it's a symbol and ab low flee to represent gold or -- abalone to represent gold or wealth and sea moss which stands for good fortune. >> we have a lot of vegetables at the bottom together. >> reporter: more than ten ingredients. the new year is a time to give thanks and hope for positive change. >> especially this year with all the changes in the politics. very important for us to focus on family and positive attitudes. so we're hoping for the best going into the new year. >> reporter: these red envelopes filled with money are given out by married people starting on new year's day. the new year's celebrations last about two weeks natural oakland chinatown, amber lee, ktvu fox 2 news. the chinese new year parade in san francisco is set for february 11th and you can watch the parade right here on ktvu fox 2. our newscast begins at 5:00 with parade coverage following at 6:00. can't wait that's always so wonderful to go to and be part of. all right, coming up -- helping wounded warriors heal. >> up next, how one california program combines rehabilitation with recreation. and ahead in weather a dry weather stretch continues as you can see a few high clouds up to our north and main storm track up there but right now we still have mostly clear skies over san francisco. coming up, the areas that could approach 70 for tomorrow. and then we do talk about some rain chances when we update the five day forecast coming up. lift up your head and keep moving or let the paranoia haunt you? and -- and we had seen so many of our customers and our vendors like leave for either the east bay or close entirely and we were not sure what's going to happen to us. >> the owners now have a 20 year lease on the new building and they say it's a good step to another 135 years in the business. our veterans make the ultimate sacrifice to keep us safe here at home. and now one program is making sure they have everything they need when they get home. >> it offers school, job training and some good old- fashioned fun on the slopes. trace gallagher has more from the sierra nevada mountains. >> reporter: the explorer john moor said going to the mountains is going home. fitting, considering home is why these wounded warriors fought. >> just the tranquillity of it you know. you look around and hey i'm pretty much with my best friends. >> reporter: u.s. marine machine gunner donnie morris served several tours in afghanistan. repaying his sacrifice is impossible but offing a dose of exhilaration and inspiration helps. >> just getting out here and getting away from the hey what's wrong with you? how are you feeling-type of stuff is better just to do that. >> reporter: retired air force master sergeant say hampton suffered chemical exposure in iraq. of his group, he was the sole survivor and though he will forever carry injuries to his brain and his back, today he feels alive and well. >> it's a blast. you know, crashed and a couple of times but i guess that's expected. and it's -- i'm having a great time. >> reporter: thanks to a combination of equipment dedicated to getting them back on the mountain. and people dedicated to giving them back their spirit. >> there you go. perfect. >> i don't feel like i fit in. and with these fine folks here, they -- they don't make me feel like an outsider. i feel like i'm one of them and that's important. >> reporter: and that's the goal. to bring wounded warriors here year-round. offering everything from recreation to rehabilitation to education. >> to come out and feel the wind in their face and the sun on their cheeks. i mean, that's real healing. >> reporter: healing for every military branch from every military era. >> it's a place where you can come and unwind. >> reporter: or wind up. 87-year-old korean war vet bing bingham says he plans to stay in the game. and on the mountain. >> this is an amazing place. and amazing place for guys to come and enjoy each other. and enjoy this. >> reporter: in mammoth lakes, california, trace gallagher, fox news. and in weather our break continues from the rainy weather pattern and remember last week at this time we were talking about a series of storms out there but nothing for today. that pattern will continue into the weekend at least for tonight into tomorrow. so for tonight, fair skies and a bit of a chill in the air already. tomorrow we'll be sunny across the board. and then the extended though we are talking act some rain chances across parts of the bay area. but at least for tomorrow, the main headline with your forecast headline for your sunday, talking about a warmer sunday out there. lots of 60s coming on board. in fact the warmest locations could be approaching the mid- to upper 60s maybe even around 70 degrees as we head into sunday the last weekend of january. taking a live look outside right now. we can show you this looking out towards san francisco. way out there in the distance in the bay bridge lights looking pretty good out there for your saturday night with mostly clear skies. we do have some cloud cover showing up but it's not here. it's primarily up to our north. as you can see the satellite perspective. if you clouds up to cape mendocino and the bay area, southern california, kind of locked in the dry weather pattern and a warm weather pattern at least for the afternoon temperatures. here we go at the live doppler sweeps and remember last week at this time we were talking about incoming rainfall and the strong gusty winds?
