She was last seen around 10 00 last night by a friend she dropped off in san leandro. Her car was found in downtown hayward. She doesnt have friends in that area and her family says its unlikely for her to just disappear. And scrambling for exits tonight at the airport. Students at san jose state are spending the night in tents on campus. This is part of an annual event to show support for the homeless. Samantha smith is there tonight. As of this year, county leaders are reporting a ballot measure to address the homeless crisis. Reporter the number of People Living on the streets in Santa Clara County is worse than ever. They say thats because theres no Affordable Housing. I want to show you this event behind me. Its called poverty under the stars. It started around 7 00 tonight. And they are expecting about 80 san jose students to spend the night. They talked about measure a as a solution to the homeless crisis. Tonight how say reyes is grateful to have a place to sleep after a series of layoffs. He knows others are not as lucky remembering what its like to live on the streets. Its hard let me put it to you this way never thought id never be like this. He is not alone. The line to get blankets is long. And its like this every night. The shelter is still to capacity with 250 beds. And theyre expecting to get even more crowded as winter approaches. Theyre seeing more Homeless Veterans and women walking through their doors. Many of these women within hours of being on the streets are approached for sexual favors or assaulted. But the thing that makes me cry the most is the fact that we have families small children on the street. Reporter thats when homeless advocates are supporting measure a, a 950 bond to built Affordable Housing units for those most as risk. Basically a half Million Dollars home would cost 60 a year. There actually is no place for these people to rent. They cant afford it. If theyre making 1,300 a month, the average apartment is 2,400 a month, what do they do . They sleep in their cars or live on the streets. Yes, sir yet the Silicon Valley taxpayers organization is calling it misleading. It will be used for political and special interest gains. So a very, very small minority will benefit. And virtually everybody in Santa Clara County will pay for it. Thats a bad deal. Reporter this measure needs 2 3 majority to pass. In listening to the presentation here, they said 300 san jose state students are homeless. While that may seem like a large number, the student population is 22,000 students. The search for Affordable Housing is creating long commutes for a growing number of Silicon Valley workers. A report by the joint Ventures Institute finds that more than 5 in the valley are megacommuters, meaning they travel 90 minutes or more one way to their job. Help is on the way, though, to reduce accidents and ease congestion at a major bottleneck in the east bay. So tonight, theyre sharing their plan to decrease congestion and accidents. Its been routine. Sudden braking, constant beeping, dangerous waving. Its part of the commute for dry valley commuters. Its terrible a necessary mess this is un a mess this is unacceptable. Once you drop down on 580 eastbound, its a parking lot that interchange is a disaster. It has the turn coming and you have people who want to switch sides. Its just always an accident there all the time. [ music ] reporter disaster can quickly turn deadly like it did here. The driver of this bmw never made it to work after they were rear ended by a big rig just before 6 00 a. M. On 580 west near javiar road and douglas. The rig was going 50 Miles Per Hour and never stopped before the crash. It caused a chain reaction, hitting four other vehicles and causing them to catch fire. Several people were injured. One person was killed. That crash is just one of a total of 72 accidents on that road alone this year. Over the past ten years, this busy stretch of highway saw a peak of accidents in 2007 and 2008 before the economy crashed in 2008. Again, were in another period of Economic Growth in the dry valley, creating more congestion on the interchange. Something that brings the whole Central Valley to the bay area. Pleasanton is no different looking to increase its number to 1500 between now and 2022. Thousands of residents in dublin and pleasanton drive alone to work. Were about to embark on a study to really determine what its final design should look like and what the Construction Costs would be for that project. Reporter some drivers i spoke with, though, are skeptical concerned with the timing for the problem. Theyll have to go multilevel like in oakland, i think. Theyll have to start stacking a freeway on top of a freeway to handle the load because it wont get better reporter what would you say to driver who is feel that way . Who feel like we see theres a project in the works but its not enough. What can we do . One single project wont solve all the transportation issues in the bay area. So were looking on a whole suite of projects. 680 northbound lanes right now. We just opened the 580 express lanes. Were seeing people having 20 to 30 minutes savings in those lanes. So those with a quick, temporary fix will see things sooner than later with the projects in the works . Thats correct. Well be constructing the 680 northbound lanes starting next year. So that will be in a couple years. Reporter still, for many drivers who spend most their day, five day ace week, gassing, then braking, beeping, then merging, a couple of years is still too long. Its just a part of living in this part of the california. Its just the way it is. The first phase of the project was expected to start sometime in february. I. The f. B. I. Confirms its searched a search warrant of vta contractor. Vta has implemented an emergency transit plan and has issued an alert to passengers to expect delays. They say the search warrant is under seal. Chandler police is investigating a deadly shooting this evening that left one man dead. Shots were fired around 6 30 tonight in east san jose. They found two men who were each shot at least once. One victim died at the scene. The other was hospitalized but is expected to survive. Theres no word on a motive or possible suspects.
