This election has presented a challenge for teachers as children go to school asking them about what they hear from parents and the adults in their lives. One group is from oaklands ed did a brewer and the other is from edna brewer and the other is from walnut creek. As a history teacher, there are many teachable moments with the election. Its about the conversation itself. Not necessarily the candidates because i think one of the things weve seen in this election is that theyre both flawed in a variety of ways. Reporter for teachers, theyre tasked putting this election into a way that middle School Students will understand. I wont tell you who im voting for but i will tell you what am i against. I usually dont say anything. I was torn being objective and the lessons for history which is you cant stay on the sidelines. Donald j. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the united states. The rhetoric, i felt, had to be called out. Is this the first time youve actually made your position known . The only other time in 25 years was proposition 8. What ive tried to focus on is integrity and looking at the two different candidates and how integrity goes a long way. And the disturbing stories just keep going coming i would say this election has had plenty of cringeworthy moments. But students are paying closer attention than i think they would any other election, president ial or otherwise. You bring a lot of what they hear at home into the classroom. And how do you teach without teaching them something thats conflicting contrary to what they hear at home . I think its a great balance to not put your politics in the classroom. But if youre teaching tolerance, thats not one side. But youre teaching critical thinking, openmindedness. No puppet no puppet its pretty clear pretty clear we had a preschoolteacher saying that 3yearolds are coming in saying, i heard that in this case, donald trump is a bully. And theyre trying to figure out how to manage that. And what weve had to accept is that its coming to school regardless. Whether its because their parents opinion. Parents saying, i dont want you to say this to my kids . No. No. Reporter you probably are worked up in your own ways. Uhhuh reporter and ho do you keep that from affecting your how do you keep that from affecting your class in a negative way . Its important that we agree to disagree and do it in a way thats nonthreatening and conversational. Even if we dont agree, its okay. Theres almost no issue that separates the two of you more than the issue of immigration. Actually, there are a lot of issues that separate the two of you the benefit, i think, is that some of the issues are issues middle schoolers can grasp. Immigrants. Thats a big concept versus tax rates is a little confusing to them. One of the lessons in every election i try to make sure they get and this is where our society is somewhat lost. Is that the people that disagree arent evil and may not even be wrong. And its okay to civilly disagree. Theres things we still need to have conversations about that we still arent having conversations about. And hopefully this election puts us in a position where we can have that conversation.
