A crush of media was there but turner didnt say a word. He walked directly to a waiting suv that drove him off. Brock turner was a student at stanford when he was caught last year committing a Sexual Assault on an unconscious woman. This summer when a judge sentenced him to six months in jail both he and the judge felt the wrath of protesters. Now brock turner is free after serving three months behind bars. Ktvus ted rowlands tells us he is required to be a registered sex offender now for the rest of his life. Anything you want to say at all . You want say anything . Reporter brock turner had nothing to say as he arrived at a hotel in palo alto. The city where his Sexual Assault of a 22yearold woman sparked international outrage. Released from the Santa Clara County jail just after 6 00 a. M. , turner was met by a sea of cameras as he jumped into a waiting vehicle despite three guilty felony convictions, the former stanford swimmer was able to avoid state prison, serving just three months in this cell of the county jail. Its a decision im not happy with. I think it should have been state prison but thats why were moving so quickly on getting the law changed and urging Governor Brown to sign the legislation on his desk now. Reporter turner will serve three years probation in ohio where authorities are waiting for him. My job is to register, confirm, send deputies to his house, make sure that he lives where he said hes living, driving what he says hes driving and those kind of things. And then notify the neighbors so we send postcards out, entered in the nationwide offender watch. Database. Reporter on the minds of many people here, the victim whose letter describing her assault and the aftermath in incredibly blunt detail has been read by millions of people around the world. I think she really did speak for a lot of survivors and summarized that experience very well. Its humiliating. A photographer caught up with turner and his family at their hotel shortly after he was released. Turner had changed his appearance by putting on a sweatshirt. His parents were with him and were not happy to see the cameras and would not talk to reporters. As for whats next, turner plans to return to his ohio home with his family. They live in the dayton area but we told theyve moved since the conviction. Turner is required to meet with a probation officer within 48 hours of release. He is also required to complete sex offender treatment. As we said he has to register as a sex offender. We checked the megans law website and found his name. But no picture yet. As part of that program, hell also be required to take polygraph tests. Not allowed to drink alcohol or go to clubs or bars. And he will need to provide authorities with blood and dna samples. Turner is also required to pay 1000 in court fees and fines. The protesters, activists and politicians who rallied around turners victim didnt let up today. They have kept up a drumbeat of protests ever since the victim read her emotional letter in court describing in graphic detail the impact the attack had on her. Ktvus ann rubin tells us all of them were at the jail today demanding change. [ chanting ] judge persky has got to go. Reporter victims of crime gathered across the Santa Clara County jail. They say the sixmonth sentence brock turner received and the three months he served do not amount to justice. The reality is rape isnt some drunken accident. Rape is a crime. Reporter some carried signs, others standing topless in the crowd scrawled a message across their bodies. He can move on but women everywhere, we are taught our lives do not matter. Reporter the problem they say was not just a sentence. It was the judge who handed it down. Four months group ultraviolet has been spearheading a recall effort of judge aaron persky. Bicyclists with billboards circled. He is unworthy of the robe he wears and the bench that he sits on. We will continue until he is no longer a judge. Reporter one month supporter one loan supporters to the crowd saying the judge handed down the sentence the probation officer suggested. He has to stay because they want him to go. Reporter some politicians like eller Eric Swalwell says the Early Release wants action. We come together to find justice. In the Early Release of judge persky. It is time for his Early Release. Reporter on the stanford campus with students searching for justice but they say at least this case has opened a dialogue. There was a surprisingly large amount of people who didnt understand what consent was and didnt know that this was such a big issue on stanford campus. Its a conversation that has been far too delayed. And people that are finally speaking up about it. Reporter they are not done yet. In april of next year they will begin collecting signatures in an attempt to formally recall judge persky. Ann rubin, ktvu fox 2 news. Also getting a glimpse inside the cell where brock turner spent the last three months. The sheriff allowed cameras inside after turner was released. As you can see the cell is a barren room with a bench, some bunks, toilet and a sink. Turner was entitled to three hours outside per week in the yard. He also had access to a common room down the hall where payphones are located. And inmates eat their meals. Coverage continues at ktvu. Com. Now to the Labor Day Weekend, that has Law Enforcement officers shifting into maximum enforcement mode. They want to make sure more drivers on the road does not lead to more deaths. The Holiday Weekend means obviously more cars on the road, this as a new government report shows the number of traffic deaths across the country has gone up for the first time in years. Ktvus Jana Katsuyama is at a dui checkpoint to tell us some of the reasons for the uptick in the number of deaths. Jana . Reporter heather and frank, one of those reasons was increase in the number of alcoholrelated deaths. Thats why these officers are out here tonight stopping people, checking to see if anyone is driving under the influence. Some of the other factors involved in these fatalities might surprise you. We are doing a dui checkpoint. Reporter traffic slows to a crawl at the dui checkpoint and to put a stop to anyone driving on the road drunk. You wouldnt want one of your loved ones to be killed because someone else is driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Reporter some people still are not getting the message. Last year one in three traffic fatalities involved drunk drivers or speeding. New data this week from the national Highway Traffic Safety Administration so is the number of traffic fatalities nationwide last year had the highest percentage increase in nearly five decades. That is more than 35,000 people who lost their lives in crashes last year. 7. 2 more deaths than the year before. Federal Officials Say there are four reasons driving the increase in fatalities. Alcoholrelated deaths were up 3 . Fatal crashes involving speeding up 3 . Victims who did not wear a seatbelt up 4. 9 . The biggest increase was distracted driving up 8. 8 . Sometimes where ive experienced actual drivers who veered off of the road. Reporter chp says it goes beyond texting. A lot of people on facebook. Scrolling through, looking at their instagram or twitter account. I can see that as i pull up and look into the window. While they are driving. Reporter the data showed that 1 in 10 of the fatalities involved distracted driving. If you are not looking on the road, its dangerous as if someone is driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Reporter the traffic deaths did not just impact people in vehicles. Also pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists. So far the data for 2016 is showing that same upward trend, tonight they are hoping to try and put a stop to some of that right here. So far have they arrested anybody at that checkpoint behind you . Reporter frank, not sure if theyve made an arrest but we did see somebody come up with a tow truck and tow one of the cars away. Sheriffs deputies in Sonoma County say theyve caught one escaped inmate but that another remains at large. Officials say Sergio Molina was working with the jail crew today west of windsor when he simply walked off. He was recaptured this afternoon when someone spotted him walking along guerneville road with his jail clothing turned inside out. That other inmate escaped on thursday, and he is still at large. And Rick A Arrieta was working in the garden of the lowrisk north county detention facility when he took off. The 39yearold is from santa rosa and was doing time for selling methamphetamines. Now to San Francisco and another missing inmate. Authorities say this one has a violent history. Sheriffs Department Says his release on wednesday was a mistake but ktvus Tara Moriarty tells us deputies have been in contact with him. Reporter the Sheriff Department released this booking photo of Victor Rodriguez thursday night after authorities realized the 20 yearold had been released from jail by mistake. Mr. Rodriguez is still at large. He has been in touch with us. He called us. And we gave him everything he needs to know to turn himself in and we are very hopeful that he will. Reporter rodriguez had been at this county jail serving a six month sentence for robbery, battery and resisting arrest. While there deputies allegedly overheard him say when he got out of jail he plans to put his ak47 inside his car so that if he were to be pulled over by police he could kill them. Wednesday he was transferred to the county jail in San Francisco off seventh street in order to be processed on new charges including that threat. A deputy who was aware he was going to court for sentencing on one of the charges realized that he was not in his jail bed. Reporter a court clerk mistakenly indicated in paperwork that all charges against rodriguez who is an admitted gang member have been dismissed. It was human error on the part of a court clerk. That does not mean there is nothing to be learned from it. So we will take a look at what happened and see if theres any safeguards that can be put into place that could prevent Something Like this from happening again. Reporter at the superior court, they released this statement. The court is looking into the circumstances surrounding the clerical error. After learning the defendant had been mistakenly released, judge Jerome Benson issued a no bail bench warrant. Philly this happens very rarely. I cant remember this happening in the 25 years ive been here. Its very concerning. Reporter rodriguez had three more months to serve on his sentence. In San Francisco Tara Moriarty, ktvu fox 2 news. San Francisco Police are hoping the public can help them locate more than 60 ivory figurines that were stolen from an art gallery. Those figurines are illegal to sell here in california. Because they are made of ivory. Worth an estimated 210,000 on the black market. Investigator say the figurines were stolen on august 18. From a gallery on jefferson. Police have already made an arrest. But they have not located the figurines. Which depict samurai soldiers and buddha. Police have identified 26 yearold cameron ibarra as a suspect in that theft. He was already in custody on another charge. He broke into the gallery and forced cabinets open and lockers open where those figurines were kept. A new setback for two businesses in san jose that were devastated by a fire when a truck hit a gas meter. Since then thieves have broken into the building on west san carlos twice. Ktvus rent chrystia rendon tells us employees feel like theyve taken one step forward and two steps back. Reporter take a close look at this guy, calm, patient and spends 15 minutes inside the san jose music studio feeling for drying fans and any other items he can fit into a large garbage bin. Thats a long time to be in a building you should not be in. Yeah. They had enough for every one of these rooms. Reporter micah tellez says two burglars struck wednesday morning but only one is seen in action. The equipment belongs to a Restoration Company that was hired to make repairs following a fire two weeks ago. He says its the second time theyve been hit. Last weekend multiple power tools were stolen. The first one we didnt get, we didnt have cameras. Because theres no electricity. The fire wiped out the electricity. Stealing to and from the company, its insured and im sure theyll get their money back but its not right. What shouldve been a nice outing at the dog park turned into a brawl in San Francisco. The video were showing you was recorded by a witness that shows a man in a plaid shirt kick a black lab that he apparently thought was confronting his basset hound to aggressively. This happened yesterday evening in dubose park. Other dog owners jumped into defendant the lab, you can see the one man tackled the owner of the basset hound. Police say they are looking for that man in the plaid shirt and when they find him they plan to charge him with animal cruelty for kicking another dog. The governor of North Carolina has declared a state of emergency in at least 33 counties. Tropical storm hermine makes its way up the eastern seaboard. Experts say the storm is weakening after it brought heavy rains and wind to florida. But tonight its residence in North Carolina, now bracing for the brunt of this storm. We want this thing to move out of North Carolina as quick as possible. We hope that we are over prepared and underwhelmed. Hermine should regain strength as overnight as it moves over water. Expected to head north affect and coastal states from virginia to new york over the Holiday Weekend. Thats the big story on the east coast for the Holiday Weekend, hermine now, turning back into a Tropical Storm, not before it drops up to nine inches of rain in this portion of florida moving up and the carolinas, it has weakened but it is raining heavy and a lot of wind and storm offshore, has the potential to reform, believe it or not into a hurricane again. Some model suggesting that could happen. A look at what happens, this is sunday night. Lingering offshore on the east coast throughout sunday into monday. Winds at 70 miles an hour. Now its off new jersey and long island. In this system, 70 miles an hour is only four miles an hour from a hurricane. It could reform into a hurricane. Suffice to say eastern seaboard Holiday Weekend from long island all the way south into the carolinas is going to be a wet one. Storm looks like its not done. Why Police Officers who work games are now threatening to boycott. 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick finding support among fans at last nights game in san diego. Just hours after he took a knee during the National Anthem and now theres a backlash against his team. The Police Officers association is accusing the 49ers organization of failing to address kaepernicks quote inappropriate workplace behavior. In a letter to the team obtained by ktvu news, the association addressed kaepernicks critical view of Law Enforcement. The letter says quote, blanket statements that Police Officers in general murder minorities is completely false and insulting to the dedicated men and women in Law Enforcement agencies across america. The statement goes on to say if the 49ers organization fails to take action to stop this type of inappropriate workplace behavior, it could result in Police Officers choosing not to work at your facilities. Santa clara Police Officers volunteered to work those games at levis stadium. Kaepernick spoke out about his views and also answered a number of questions about the motivation for his stance. I think there are a lot of conversations happening not only nfl locker rooms but around the country. Ive also had friends that arent on football teams say i respect what youre doing. I support you. Ive had more conversations about human rights and oppression and things that need to change in the last week than ive had in my entire life. The fact that those conversations are happening is a start. As far as how long this goes, im not sure. I want to be able to effect change. There are other people that want to as well. Im not antiamerican. I love america. I love people. Thats why im doing this. I want to help make america better. A bay area mother tries to keep the memory of her daughter alive by opening a dance studio in her memory. Ktvus Paul Chambers live in san leandro where this dream is being brought to life. Reporter heather, back in july i spoke to regginae jeffreys mom about opening a dance studio. At the time she wanted to do it in december. Steps away, very close to happening a lot earlier than they planned. She is a woman on a mission. A lifeline going across. And then her name. Reporter the name she is referring to is her daughter, regginae jeffreys the 16year old was shot and killed by a stray bullet. Shortly after performing this dance at the funeral, two of her friends, wilson says her daughter loves to dance and that inspired her to open a dance studio in her honor. You said its important for people to know this is not my studio. This is regginae jeffrey studio. Family members are putting the final touches on the dance studio located on east 14th in san leandro. Wilson is recruiting dancers to fill it. All weekend long she was signing up children who they say will help help keep her daughters legacy alive. This is how im grieving. The person she called the dancing angel after this performance. Wilson says its tough to watch the video because it reminds her of the final hours of her daughters life.
