endorse donald trump. we are live on the convention floor there at the arena in cleveland where crews told the delegates to vote your conscience. >> well the crowd was electric tonight and we did see the full range of emotion. at most points people were cheering but at some points jeering. ted ted cruz got booed off stage. by the end of the night everyone was on the same page, everyone cheering for vp nominee mike pence. >> i accept your nomination to run and serve as vice president of the united states of america. >> he may be second on the ticket. >> i'm a christian, a conservative and the republican in that order. >> but he was number one at the convention tonight. >> in the land of the free and the home of the brave. >> he spoke of his roots, his success as governor and his respect of donald trump. >> he's got backup and on november 8th i know we will elect donald trump to be the 45th president of the united states of america. >> and he spoke of his distaste of hillary clinton. >> i would want a better title too if i was america's secretary of the status quo. >> but it may have been ted ted cruz who left the worst taste in republican mouths. >> i want to congratulate donald trump on winning the nomination last night. >> that was the only time in the long speech that he even mentioned trump's name. and despite ongoing calls from the crowd he didn't endorse the gop nominee before finally getting booed off stage. >> everyone one of you and god bless the united states of america. >> fwu crowd got what they -- but the crowd got what they wanted from his son eric. >> it's time for a president with common sense. >> and with his father watching he brought the crowd back to cheers. next speaker newt gingrich continued the ted cruz cleanup. >> ted ted cruz said you can vote your conscience for anyone who will uphold the constitution. in this election, there is only one candidate who will uphold the fusion. >> mike pence is now part of that choice and it was clear the crowd here chose him again tonight. >> we will make america great again. . thank you. >> well what a big night for california delegates who seem like they were cheering the loudest. maybe we're biassed about that. all delegates were cheering at the end of the day and tomorrow they'll be cheering even louder that's when the nominee donald trump takes to the stage formally accepts it nomination and gives his big speech. we're going to hear from ivanka as well and the rnc chair the latest live from cleveland back to you. >> going back to ted ted cruz what was it like there being on the floor as he was speaking you go from the cheering to the bog and what were some of the -- booing and what were some of the delegates saying? >> there was a lot of confusion on the floor because right near the end of ted ted cruz's speech, donald trump walked in. so the attention shifted a little bit. you know that people were -- knew that people were starting to get upset because it was clear he was not going to endorse donald trump so while 2 crowd was -- while the crowd was shifting everyone saw donald trump and started cheering. you heard the boo undertones and the cheer at the same time. for a little while it was unclear what was happening. but there was a little bit of a skirmish afterwards. people kept on booing and his wife had an incident where people were booing at her as well. it was difficult for ted ted cruz and his wife. >> one more day to go. in cleveland tonight. and joining us now james taylor professor of politics at the university of san francisco. earlier on our newscast he suggested that mike pence had to look presidential was it mission accomplished tonight? >> i think he turned in an incredible speech. he spoke not only to the base but he also was the counterer balance to trump. >> what about ted ted cruz? someone i was listening to said it's like he went to the wedding and raised his head and said i objects. >> that's too funny. he shouldn't have showed up but he did and when he did he tried to like barry goldwater. and i think he thought he was standing on principle and his conscience even though politically i think it was a mistake for him? >> in the end will it make a difference? >> no it won't. donald trump could commit a violent act on fifth avenue and it wouldn't turn people away. it would have ruined every single politician before him for one of the things he's done. he's done 50 and we can't even find him to weigh down on donald trump. it wouldn't have an impact. >> along with the boos we heard he had to be escorted out along with his wife. okay what do you know about party unity. it seems like they still have problems that won't be resolved is that going to be a problem as we get closer to the election. >> to go back ted cruz was positioning himself for 2020 and we've seen that before. and so the trump nomination at this convention for him is sort after sideshow. yes some people are going to come out unsatisfied with this. by and large republicans will coaless around the nominee and move forward. >> because again the one thing that unifies them all is hillary clinton. >> what does donald trump have to do tomorrow? >> he has to give a good speech and pretend to be presidential. >> what do you mean by pretend? >> he has to be statesmen and a reality tv star because that's what's worked. when we saw this behavior by ted ted cruz this is reality tv. millions of people are watching this and i think he needs to steer the ship correctly the way he came out to project himself as the biggest personality in the room. >> does he use a teleprompter? >> then he needs to put it down and go off the cuff. >> i think if he's trying to do both it's got the potential to be not so good. >> we were commenting about how casual and calm newt gingrich was tonight he just looked like he was talking to in his living room. >> a really good speech for who he was speaking with. and like you say totally natural. we'll have to see how trump does tomorrow night. >> about 100 days until the election does donald trump have the ground forces? >> i've been wrong about him throughout this primary but at some point the traditional metrics kick in. they've worked for centuries and at some point he has to have a ground gain. you can go back to 2008 both hillary clinton and rudy guiliai had traditions. you have to have a ground game and barack obama taught that lesson. >> if you don't have people in every state helping to marshall the resources i don't care how you're doing on a poll level state by state you're going to get beat. and that's going to be donald trump's problem going forward. he doesn't have a ground game throughout the united states. >> huge night tomorrow night professor and brian we'll see you again tomorrow night. >> thank you. >> back up back up back up. a flagrant protest in front of the hall there in cleveland ended with at least 17 arrests this afternoon.
