Reporter donald trump officially got the nomination right here tonight, all with the help of the california delegation. But it was his home state of new york that officially put him over the top giving him the required number of delegates, 1237, nevertheless even though he had enough he didnt have everyone. More than 700 delegates actually went against him. Thats the largest gap of any nominee in the last 40 years. But the Convention Still rolled on. Tonight his two children spoke charm in the crowd and the entire country. [ cheers and applause ] reporter they are chips off the old block. And tonight they were blockbusters. God bless you and thank you. Reporter tiffany and donald trump, jr. Spoke of their father shaping their lives, teaching them to accomplish the impossible. When he was told he couldnt possibly succeed in politics, yes, he did. Reporter tonight, he really did. His own son delivering the new york delegates that put his father over the top officially clinching the nomination. And it is my honor to be able to throw donald trump over thetop. Reporter just before california held helped pave the path with 172 delegates. Single mom shirley those are had the honor, she says, of a lifetime. So honored that god has put Many Blessings on me. Reporter after donald trump himself thanked the crowd. Are you having fun . Reporter other californians like Kevin Mccarthy took the opportunity to speak for him in prime time. Im proud to be a conservative from california. We think donald trump can actually win california. Its a tough state to win but those republicans in the past have not won it back to george bush, first time around. So he wants to make it competitive. Im for anybody that wants to make california competitive. Reporter the competition is on. Is she guilty or not guilty . Reporter Chris Christie indicted Hillary Clinton on several fronts. And paul ryan was on the attack. Lets get on the offensive and lets stay there. Reporter but it was his family who once again may have won the night. And when we elect him, well have done all that. Well have made America Great again. Reporter some last minute adjustments out here tonight, actually fixing the lights because tomorrow is a very big day. Coming up tomorrow, right here on the podium were going to have the Vice President ial candidate who also was officially nominated tonight, thats going to be governor mike pence. He will be speaking later in the evening but were also going to have people who also tried to seek the nomination. Ted cruz for example going to be speaking tomorrow and senator marco rubio along with Newt Gingrich all coming up tomorrow and of course all the coverage for you live right here on ktvu fox 2. We talked about this yesterday but there was a lot of concern there in cleveland about the possibility of protests, what was the situation like today on day two . Reporter well, we are seeing more protests out here now, frank but they are small protests, they are a little disruptive for example earlier in the evening we couldnt even get from the media area where we are working back here to the to the q. It took about an hour for us to get back past the smaller contain protests but we havent seen anything violent, just a little more disruption. Ross palombo reporting tonight on the convention floor, thank you. Here is the final count from todays nominating process. Donald trump with 1725 delegate votes. A comfortable margin above the 1237 votes needed. For the nomination. Texas senator ted cruz came away with 475 and finished second. Ohio Governor John Kasich had 120 votes and florida senator marco rubio what was fourth with 114. Joining us now, james taylor professor of politics at university of San Francisco and also political analyst brian sobel. James, what stood out to you tonight . In terms of the speakers, i would say the children of donald trump, i think chris to Chris Christie didnt ask him and job in terms of trying to prosecute Hillary Clinton. As a former prosecutor he knew what to do in terms of trying to make a case. The surprise was mitch mcconnell. Of course he kept his hands off up to this point. Now both he and paul ryan are getting behind donald trump and so they are hitching the future of the Republican Party under their leadership with donald trump and i think this is going to be interested in Going Forward. Bryant, they had a rough first day given the controversy over melania trumps speech. Did they recover today and whats the headline . I think so. First of all, trump goes on and gets the nomination. They go through the roll call. I was very interested to watch as it is, every convention. Then the kids did an excellent job. And the news cycle is the news cycle. I think melania will leave the news cycle and the rest of the story will be tomorrow night, with governor mike pence, and then trump on thursday night. Did you hear the personal side to the kids stories or did you hear more on the issues, the politics . Donald trump, jr. Had kind of a mix. Talked about his father as a person, but also as a business person. His generosity, many aspects of his personality. I thought he really for him, captured his father the way he wanted to. Professor you were talking about Chris Christie and how you thought he was effective tonight. One of the things that struck me was as he was talking, the crowd was chanting, lock her up. Talking about Hillary Clinton. I dont know. The people that are supporting donald trump claim this is about economic anxiety. I dont know how locking Hillary Clinton up is going to pay their bills. I dont know how they get a sort of cathartic vicarious sins of vindication in some ways. It almost felt undignified. Yeah. Theres something that we are in agreement, the negative tone. Well see it with the democrats , negatively when the country needs to be uplifted. People need to hear positive messages about thats one of the things paul ryan tried to do was to talk about party unity and consolidating the party against insurmountable odds. Party unity was an important thing. I wanted to follow up with party unity. We saw the roll call vote. Donald trump didnt get more than 700 delegates, did not vote for him. Do you think that signifies an issue with party unity or do you think moving more toward unifying . I think the party will coalesce around donald trump. Theres no other alternative at this point. And its time to move forward and take on the democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Lets look very quickly at tomorrow night, Vice President ial candidate mike pence. Marco rubio. And we have ted cruz. Ted cruzs going to be very interesting. What are you expecting to hear . But i think they are going to step in line. The message going out from reince priebus, step in line. If you cant, stay out the way. This is a forward moving ship, and the question is can Hillary Clinton and democrats stop it . And it is halfway over now. Are they doing anything to sway voters over to their camp . Well, i always say conventions are an interesting thing because they speak to the base, you hope you bring in some people, after the convention is over, a little bit of a bump for the candidates, three, four, five points. It slips back, people move away from the enthusiasm and back to reality. One thing thats interesting, we talk about National Polls and how its very close with the National Polls. But what really matters are the states. Individual states, electoral college. The the New York Times said according to their analysis, Hillary Clinton has a 76 chance of defeating donald trump. Yes. That was a statebystate analysis. Along with polling. Going back to about april. They put that together on a model. Thats what they came up with. And ive been saying for the longest time we talk about national numbers, but that isnt how we elect a president. Statebystate. I agree at this point. Hillary clinton looks good in terms of electoral college. People are actually relying on electoral college. To stop the train i mentioned. So well see what happens Going Forward but i really do think that we cant take donald trump for granted. I think donald trump is sitting pretty in the catbird seat right now even with all the negativity around him, hes still standing, he came out the victor. He won today. We can talk about all the negatives, but he did something unprecedented in american history. He ran as a quoteunquote demagogue. And he won and so far we can look at pat beginning, al sharpton, sarah palin, many others going back to barry goldwater, the country has always said no. Two more days to go. Absolutely. Thank you. Thank you, gentlemen. Our Convention Coverage extends to ktvu. Com. You can see what a cleancut that is. They did a cleancut 23 times. Reporter rhonda berry ceo of the nonprofit our city forest has spent 25 years planting trees in san jose. Shes dealt with vandalism on one or two but nothing prepared her for what she saw on meridian avenue on the outskirts of willow glen. It was shocking. It was stunning. Took me a while to process. Reporter 23 trees, majority chinese fringe, sawed off at the trunk left hanging in the crossbars. A neighbor walking by discovered them friday morning. Berry believes the vector of vandalism overnight and the culprit was armed with an electric saw. Something beautiful and it should be celebrated. That we should be enjoying and even the trees cant seem to hold their own. When there is a mean heart. Reporter volunteers spent hours planting trees for earth day last april. The city invested thousands of dollars to maintain them as the troops as the trees help filter air and absorb noise. The nonprofit held a candlelight vigil for them and posted signs that read, this tree was murdered. Neighbors call the crime disappointing. I dont understand who would do Something Like that. Why . Why would they want to do that . We have manicured lawns, beautiful homes, so why somebody would come to this neighborhood and destroy it doesnt make any sense to me. Reporter so far there are no leads. The nonprofit is turning to neighbors for Surveillance Video for any clues. Neighbors plan to be more vigilant. The nonprofit vows to replant these trees sometime in the fall. In the meantime they hope to find whoever did this. Frank . What a shame. Azenith smith, in the south bay tonight.
