strikes in iraq and syria. we are learning more about the coordinated attack the french president is calling an act of war. >> reporter: still in shock, mourners laid tributes on the bloodstained pavements in paris. the french president francois hollande declared a day of mourning in response to what he called absolute barbarism >> the translator: it is an act of war. a jihadiist army against france. against what we are defending around the world. against what we are. a free country that speaks to the entire planet. it was prepared, organized, an planned from abroad. >> reporter: he was hustled out of the exhibition soccer match between france and germany after an explosion was heard. a suicide bomber had a ticket to the game and tried to enter the stadium and was stopped by security and frisked. that is when he backed up and detonated himself. another one detonated himself three minutes later. four people were killed in the blasts. two other teams of terrorists targeted a string of cafes. sprayed bullets killing at least 37. but the deadliest scene was the bataclan boulevard voltaire concert hall. they were shouting support for isis, syria, and iraq. ruthlessly executing the innocents for 15 minutes only pausing to reload. it wouldn't stop, this witness said. when french police stormed the theater, they shot one of the attackers, the other three killed themselves. in vienna, secretary of state john kerry voiced support for the people of france. >> the united states stands with france and the rest of the world in our resolve to eliminate scourge, violence extremist groups from the face of the earth. and make no mistake, that resolve has only grown stronger in the wake of this unspeakable brutality. >> reporter: authorities are aggressively investigating the attacks here and across europe in a hunt for accomplices. in belgium, police arrested three men. and here in paris, the brother and father of one of the bombers are now in custody. in paris, rick leventhal, fox news. >> and we are learning more about the victims that include a california college student. 23-year-old nohimi gonzalez was a design student. she was studying in paris. she was at one of the restaurants hit by the terrorist. the university plans to hold the vigil for the paris victims tomorrow afternoon. also killed was 36-year-old nick alexander. he was a crew member of that band from palm desert called eagles of death metal. the group was on stage when the gunmen began their killing spree. alexander's family described him as everyone's best friend. generous, funny, and loyal. debora villalon is live at the french consulate where there have been a steady stream of mourners there. >> reporter: heather, at one point, more than 100 people spilling off the sidewalk here. and onto the street of san francisco police guided traffic. it is fewer now as it has gotten late. but, they left behind dozens of messages. most days people walk past the unmarked french consulate without a glance, but this wasn't most days. the hustle and bustle gave way to silence and sadness, stillness, and time to reflect. >> i'm so sorry for what happened in paris and for the innocent people being hurt worldwide. just because of terrorism. >> reporter: iranian born, a u.s. citizen five years, this immigrant wrote freedom, equality, and brotherhood. horrified at the violent extremism. >> they are killing, taking land, killing people. they are just expanding their kingdom with blood. it is sad. >> reporter: south of market, in yerba buena gardens, a show of solidarity as 100 people gathered on the lawn. candles the only light, quiet conversation the only sound. >> it is like 9/11. >> reporter: the shock is reminiscent to 9/11 and so too the support from the rest of the world. many here refuse fear. and want more than ever to defeat terror. >> it is killing our children. our brothers. our sisters. our parents. and there is no stop to it. so, i think is message is very clear. we are against it and we are going to do whatever need to be done. >> you know it is your own country and you are not there when it is happening. >> reporter: 16 and midway through a year in the u.s., this exchange student and her mom talked about cutting her stay short. >> she said maybe it is better that you are there and not here. that means you are safe. >> reporter: as safe as any place seems. after more innocent lives are extinguished in the name of rage and radicalism. >> i don't think it will be the end. i think we will have more in france. it is kind of scary. but, we have to deal with it. >> reporter: taking a look live now at san francisco city hall, lit in the red white and blue, colors of the french flag. it is a sight at public buildings and monuments all over the world and tomorrow, at 3:00, a remembrance will be held at civic center plaza. the general plan to be there. that should be quite a crowd. because heather an estimated 80,000 french nationals live throughout northern california. it is a big community. >> it certainly is. a tragedy that is felt by so many. thank you. responses to the attack range from shock to anger to sadness. some carry those emotions with them as they return to san francisco today. ktvu fox 2 news' christina rendon has more from the first passengers to land at sfo from paris. >> reporter: united flight 984 arrived in san francisco this afternoon carrying passengers with heavy hearts. their thoughts with the victims in paris. in a place full of hellos and good-byes, the anticipation at gate g of the international tournament was different. it is where renee greeted her girlfriend thinking of the terrorist attacks that kept her home friday. >> we had no idea what was happening. they told us five dead. then 20, then 30. then 100. and it was just increasing and increasing. it was really, really horrible. >> reporter: she was one of the first passengers to arrive at sfo from paris. julie was having dinner a half mile from an attack when he saw a panicked woman on the street. >> a lady was loud on the phone saying i was in this show and some guys with machine guns came in and she was able to escape. she had no shoes. she was very frantic. >> reporter: he says the area soon turned into what looked like a war zone. >> there were people with machine guns. police army. everywhere. there were hunting people. it was pretty intense. >> reporter: those images kept brian henrahan glued to the television in his hotel while in paris with colleagues on a business trip. >> just being home is nice. >> reporter: but for those who call paris home, they can't wait to get back. >> life has to carry on. that's the best way of continuing to live by our values and by supporting the french people. >> i think there is a high solidarity in paris. >> reporter: she wishes she was home now, but walked away appreciating her safe arrival in san francisco. airports in paris remain open, though passengers say security is tight. christina rendon, ktvu fox 2 news. and we are seeing for the first time footage from inside the music venue where the southern california band was performing. a concert goer was recording the band just moments before a gunman opened fire. ♪ [ music ] [ sound of gunfire ] >> there you could hear at least seven gunshots. that gunfire lasted more than 10 minutes. it was by far the deadliest of the attacks. the concert had been sold out. the gunmen also took hostages before security forces stormed the venue. authorities in the bay area are on heightened alert following the attacks in paris. oakland police are increasing patrols. the department beefed up security at the oakland arena. a large police presence is expected at the oakland coliseum when the raiders take on the vikings. it is not only here in the bay area. the department of homeland security and the fbi are working closely with law enforcement agencies across the country. cities from new york to los angeles are taking added precautions and tightening up security. the department of homeland security says there are no specific or credible threats of an attack in the u.s. like the ones that happened san francisco got some help today from the city to prepare for the winter rainy season. today was the first of two sandbag saturdays. the city department of public works and the public utilities commission have teamed up to host these two events. people living in san francisco can get up to ten free sandbags. you just have to show proof of where you live. the sandbags will be available again next saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at five distribution sites and we will post a link to where the sites are located on ktvu.com. just look under web links. and it is supposed to get a little wet later tonight. let's check with mark tamayo. >> the weather pattern will change rapidly. get ready. now, we have a very well defined cold front up to our north. the focus of the heavy rainfall has been to the pacific northwest. you can see here, but this system is finally beginning to move to the south. so, you can see some development here. that is an area of low pressure developing a wave on the front. that will be the source of not only rainfall in the bay area, but also some pretty strong winds as well. right know, the focus of the rainfall is approaching the north coast. eureka and cape mendocino as well. but as you can see. here we go with the live doppler sweep showing you the live pattern. the cloud shield not too far away. it will be moving in this direction. rainfall expectations, we are expecting up to three quarters of an inch. wind advisory goes up sunday. and the sierra will pick up some more snow. we will take this in the short term. look what happens. 3:00 a.m. this morning. clouds are spreading to the south. we could have moderate to heavy downpours. we will have heavy downpours push across the bay area. i could wake you up. the weather pattern will be sheriff deputies under investigation for what was seen in this video. questions tonight about the deputies' use of force and how the department is responding. >> the latest on the investigation into what caused a bus to lose control seriously injuring several people in union square. >> and coming up, a large section of the old bay bridge is mo more. the six second implosion that brought it down between fill ups. it's got every technology there is. the prius actually belongs on the table. >> two people were seriously hurt late last night after the car they were in plunged off a cliff on highway 1 in marin county. happened just before midnight south of stinson beach. rescue crews hiked about 100 yards with waves crashing against rocks before geting to the car. once the victims were extra dated they were flown out. authorities say the victims, a man and a woman are from stinson beach. both suffered major injuries. investigators say drowsy driving may have played a role in the crash. san francisco police are trying to determine what led to a tour bus crash yesterday at union square that left 20 people hurt. the double decker tour bus was speeding when it hit a bicyclist and several cars before crashing into scaffolding. four of those hurt remain in critical condition at san francisco general hospital. the hospital spokesman says the victims suffered facial, head, and internal injuries as well as broken arms, legs, and ribs. police are also looking into whether mechanical failure, a medical emergency, or drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. video showing two alameda county deputies in an alley. a warning that what you are about to see may be disturbing to some viewers. now, surveillance video captured the deputies tackling and striking the man with their batons early thursday morning. it started as a pursuit in the east bay that ended in san francisco's mission district. authorities say they were trying to pull over the suspect for driving a stolen vehicle. the sheriff's office is not commenting on the video except to say the matter is under a formal investigation. that suspect, by the way, is identified as stanny petrov. he is facing a number of charges. a sonoma county woman is behind bars accused of intentionally driving her mini van into a crowdful of peep. it happened early morning in a nightclub in santa rosa after a bar fight. 29-year-old jessica garcia leos hit five people. one of the victims is in critical condition. leos fled the scene and was picked audiotape short time later. she was booked into the sonoma county jail. caltrans today imploded a five story underwater pier that once supported the old eastern span of the bay bridge. as ktvu fox 2 news' tom vacar tells us, they will assess the implosion to see if other parts of the old bridge should be taken down the same way. >> reporter: it was heavily surrounded by floating security forces beginning in the wee hours of the morning. then under a crystal clear morning sky, caltrans took its first opportunity to implode the main pier that once supported the old eastern span of the bay bridge. shown here from several angles. the blast was delayed by about 15 minutes to assure that the charges would detonate in the proper sequence. however, delay was well within the 45 minute window when the bay was at slack tide meaning a time when water is neither entering or exiting the bay. the massive five story structure almost all but already underwater sank to the bay floor below. now, it is assessment time. >> sonar and our ongoing monitoring systems will tell us if everything worked according to plan. >> reporter: that is because the ebb and flow of the bay clouds the waters. >> we are dependent on the sonar system to provide information because of the murky water. it is not like the caribbean where you have the clear water. we are very much dependent on technology here. this is highly engineered and so, when we do get that information back, we will be able to assess effectively what impacts occurred, if everything underwater certainly was successful. >> reporter: the mountains of data gathered from numerous monitors and sensors will help decide if the other remaining large piers should be removed by implosion when the bridge structures over them are removed but that would not likely come until a year from now when once again wildlife will be at a minimum. tom vacar, ktvu fox 2 news. now, before the implosion, traffic was stopped making sure that the bridge was clear of all cars. and that caused a significant traffic backup. in fact, some people waited almost 30 minutes for the area to be clear of any possible risk. some people were hoping to catch a glimpse of the implosion. others were simply trying to get from point a to point b. bart briefly suspended service during this same period. trains, though, started running again shortly after that implosion. still to come tonight, continuing coverage of the terror attacks in >> absolutely. in fact, it is directly related to the growth of terrorism. >> reporter: the three remaining candidates tended to domestic affairs including the american economy which was supposed to be the key theme of the debate before the terrorist attacks. >> the billionaires pay an effective tax rate lower than truck drivers that makes no sense at all. >> that is why i support a $12 national minimum wage. that is what the democrats in the senate have put forward as a proposal. >> reporter: each candidate presenting their case to be the next commander-in-chief. >> it is not a radical idea to say if a person works 40 hours a week, they shouldn't live in poverty. >> we have to get our neighbors into the full light of an american economy. >> reporter: the democrats will face off again in manchester test 19, the saturday before christmas. the republicans have their next debate december 15 in vegas. republican white house hopefuls took to social media to blast the democratic debate. trump said hillary and sanders are not doing well, but what of the former failed mayor of baltimore doing on the stage? o'malley is a clown. jeb bush criticized clinton's comments on stopping isis saying isis is assad's responsibility. a store in santa clara has been burglarized again. take a look at drones plus on dwayne avenue early this morning. the thief breaks through the glass of the front door and starts stealing merchandise. it is still unclear how many drones were stolen. this is the second time the store has been burglarized. two san jose men were arrested for breaking into the establishment back on december 14. anyone with any information on this latest burglary is asked to call the santa clara police. lines formed outside a retailer in san francisco this morning. see what the people were hoping to pick up and how some in line were looking to spend some money to make more money. >> and next, a bay area family boy, they are certainly looking forward to being reunited. hear from the man who witnessed the chaotic scene in paris last night. night. >> back now to our continuing coverage of the paris attacks. an islamic state militants have claimedmented for the violence that hit a concert hall, a stadium, bars and restaurants. among those enjoying a friday night was a software engineer from san carlos who suddenly found himself amid the carnage and chaos. >> reporter: popular spots in paris targeted. the city plunged into panic and confusion and caught in the middle was brian morearty. >> we heard bang, bang. then the restaurant got quiet. >> reporter: he is a software engineer for airbnb and is in paris for the annual open conference. we spoke with him by phone. one of the attacks hit a restaurant half a block away from where he and employees were having dinner. a woman ran into the restaurant screaming about gunfire. >> so, everybody dove down. we waited there for a few minutes. that was definitely the scare rest part of the evening. >> reporter: his thoughts went to his family back home in san carlos. he texted his wife saying he was okay. then police blocked off the area and his fears increased. no one inside the restaurant was allowed to leave for hours. >> it was terrifying. >> reporter: later when he walked out onto the streets of paris, it was not the same city as before. all around him, french police have sealed off streets with other emergency crews responding to the scene. a horrifying scene that morearty's wife and children are thankful he was able to escape. >> i told him to thank his lucky stars and thank the person that picked the restaurant that he went to. he so easily could have been one of the casualties. so thank god he was okay. >> now the final day of the airbnb conference was canceled because of the violence in paris. this is the first time terrorist attacks vent was held outside of san francisco. some real classics are on december play this weekend at the alameda county fairgrounds. hundreds of people showed up for the good guys hot rod car show. many vintage models. the event is an opportunity for good guys to team up with the alameda county good bank to fight hunger. for every two cans of food donated, visitors are getting $3 off the admission to the show. >> one in five people in alameda county are struggling with hunger and this will enable us to provide food and hope for those neighbors. >> 25-barrels with canned foods. >> some very exclusive foot ware. barney's at union square, easy boost 350 moon rocks. the shoes are priced at $200 but many people plan on selling them for twice that. >> i feel like these are very valuable. these are very fortunate to have these. >> this is west third sneaker relief. one of the biggest country stars in the world performing in the bay area this weekend. there he is.  garth brooks kicking off his three show concert event at the sap center last night. that is part of every stop on his world tour. brook's teammates for kids foundation works for the company called procamps. they help underprivileged kids go to camps hosted by the biggest age in sports. in san jose, the earthquakes are part of the teammates for kids soccer pro camp. and today, brooks along with dominique kinear spent time with the kids at the camp. >> that is such a nice thing to do. well, it was a bit of volleyball that came to the football field. officials take a closer look at what happened here. >> and get ready. rain. yay. it is on the way. meteorologist mark miles is up next with more on the storm system headed toward the bay area. love or like?
