Broken hearted. Please dont drive, because you broke a family. Good evening everyone, im frank somerville. Im Heather Holmes in tonight for julie haener. An oakland family is grieving tonight after a mother and father is run over by a suspected drunk driver, doing his job, repaving roads for caltrain. Weve all heard the warnings to slow down. Highway work can be dangerous. Reporter heather, thats right. His family tells me, he was concerned about the dangers of the job. His widow tells me, shes devastated, and her worst fears realized when he was killed this weekend. I cant believe it, because my brotherinlaw called me and tells me. Reporter gabrielle said she wanted to go to the hospital to see her husband, only to learn that he died on the job. She said for the past 10 years, rodriguez had worked on many road projects and had several close calls with drivers nearly hitting him. Yeah, he was afraid. Were you always afraid when he went to work. Reporter yeah, i was worried. Reporter a driver crashed into dell cruz as he was working on 580 west in oakland. Caltrain closed off the left lanes for repaving. Chp says the 21yearold driver had a blood alcohol level nearly double the legal limit and no drivers license. All the people that drink and drive its bad. Reporter de la cruz was the main bread winner for his family. He joined grilling carne asada for get togethers and watching his beloved raiders. They said where is my dad . And i dont have the right words to talk to him. Reporter gabriela says nothing will bring her husband back, but she hopes the drunk driver will serve a long sentence behind bars so they wont hurt anyone else. They break my family, and they leave my son alone with no father. Reporter this family tells me, he was proud of the work he did, despite the dangers. He was especially proud that he worked on the eastern span of the bay bridge and that he would have turned 34 years old one week from today. Such a tragedy for that family. What do we know about the drivers status tonight . Reporter hes still being held at the santa rita jail in dublin. He made his First Court Appearance this afternoon. The charges of felony dui and vehicular manslaughter. A case that we will continue to follow, amber, thank you. Now to monterey county, and a shootout at a target store that left two men dead and two Police Officers wounded. It it happened in the parking lot of the target in fan city along highway 101 just north of monterey. Police say two officers spotted two men. A witness said the first shots were fired by one of the men in the car. The police returned fire, and the two men were killed. At this point, we dont know their names. Both officers are expected to make a full recovery. Reporter an f a18 fighter jet crashed just west of the la more Naval Air Station today, but fortunately, the pilot was able to eject safely, it happened just before 4 00 this afternoon in a dirt field, about 3 miles west of the base, which is about 45 miles south of fresno. A local fire chief says the pilot safely parachuted to the ground, and was able to walk toward Emergency Responders once he landed. The Naval Air Station is the home base for the navys west coast f a18 fighter jet operations. The crowded republican field of president ial candidates is now down to 15 after Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker ended his campaign today, and withdrew from the race. I encourage other republican president ial candidates to consider doing the same, so that the voters can focus on a limited number of candidates who can offer a positive, conservative alternative to the current front runner. Walker joined the race early, trying to appeal to religious and tea party conservatives, but he never gained momentum. The pull out yesterday showed his support was less than 1 . Donald trump meantime is still the gop front runner, favored by 24 of likely republican voters. Carly fiorina has jumped into second place. Shes at 15 in the latest poll, thats up from just 3 earlier this month, and ben carson is now third. On the department side, Hillary Clintons numbers are on the rise. Shes at 42 from the cnn poll. Bernie sanders is at 34 . Joe biden is at 22 , even though he hasnt announced yet if hes going to run. The question here is should coal be shipped by trains to the port of oakland . Ktvus Ken Pritchett is at the port tonight, with the debate involving health concerns, the environment, and some much needed jobs. Reporter frank, this all resolves around an already approved plan to build a new shipping terminal at the old oakland army base. This would handle bulk materials brought in by train. Materials that could include coal mined in utah. Reporter small protests outside city hall pailed in comparison. Roughly 500 people signed up to speak, potentially for hours about coal. The general consensus is for no coal in oakland. Reporter a bulk commodity shipping terminal could take in many types of materials by rails for shipment overseas. Ive been behind the scenes, and the developer hopes no one would find out coal is actually coming through here, until it actually did. They knew all along, they were building a bulk commodity terminal. You will find a list of all kinds of commodities, including coal. Reporter representing the oakland army based developers, and says if coal moves into this new terminal, it will be safe. Its going to be put into the ground, and then its going to be sent on a Conveyor Belt up to the ships. There will be no exposure of the coal to the air. Reporter those that oppose coal say just the opposite will be true. That coal dust will present a health, and environmental hazard to workers at the terminal, and to residents along rail lines and in west oakland. They say the city has the power to stop coal shipments. And the city council absolutely has the authority to further regulate this development through this clause in the Development Agreement which says if theres a threat to health and safety they can put further regulation on this development. Reporter the protesters say that they want the city to find this as a Public Safety threat and they believe that would allow the coal shipments to stop. They say theyre not against the shipping terminal itself. Theres also a broader argument some of them have. They say that coal is a bad actor when it comes to climate change, and thereof, their argument is that coal should not be exported. This new shipping terminal is scheduled to open around 2017. Now to Pope Franciss visit to north america, and his final night in cuba before coming here to the u. S. Today, the pope celebrated an outdoor mass in cubas fourth largest city. It was attended by as many as 150,000 people. And they heard the pope talk take a subtle jab at communism as cuba embarks on free market reforms. He told cubans they need to overcome idealogical pre conceptions and be willing to change. He will take part in a capital mall parade. On friday, he will be in new york to attend the United Nations general assembly, and a religious ceremony at the 9 11 museum. On saturday, the pope travels to philadelphia where hes expected to visit independence hall, which is the birth place of american democracy. The popes return to the u. S. Will also include the first ever cannonnization on u. S. Soil. Pope francis plans to elevate father sera to sainthood. Reporter bay area schools, streets around parks are name indeed his honor. Its been a long tradition in the Catholic Church to venorate and in some cases canonize to the first person who was to preach catholicism in a particular area. Reporter he has written a book on seras life. He farmed the land with his father million he was 15 years old. Two years later in 1730, he becomes a priest and changes his name in honor of brother juniper, a fryer known for his humility. After 18 years, at age 35, he decides to leave to become a missionary. He left all of his comforts and came to what was then the end of the world. Reporter he spends 17 years in mexico. In 1769, journeys to alpa, california, where he funds nine missions. At the santa clara and deloris missions, a relic from sera sits on the alter. His cannonnization was originally proposed in the 1930s. The church needs proof of two miracles, and sera only had one. Curing a man of lupus. In january, pope francis decided to eliminate that requirement. Saying sera was an exemption to the rule. The initial years in california were very, very rough years. Reporter life in the missions could be oppressive. They were a mix of invocation, and coercion. Reporter california indians say their ancestors were forced into christianty and were severely beaten by soldiers if they tried to run away. The decisions to enter the missions embarked you on a one way street. You could come in, but you were not allowed to go out. Reporter wiping out thousands of indians, for all of these reasons, local tribes have opposed seras sainthood. Statistics show more than half of catholics on the west coast are latino. I think that by canonizing someone who was outside the traditional narrative, that the pope is calling attention to the fact that american catholicism has always been multicultural and multiethnic. Reporter ktvu, fox 2 news. Tara is going to be in washington for the popes visit. Her live coverage begins tomorrow, and you will also find a special section on the papal visit on our website at ktvu. Com. Well show you a sketch of the suspect, all new released just about 90 minutes ago. Tracking your tuesday forecast. Not going to be as hot. Numbers are going to get down there. Im tell you how much its going to cool off and when the heat turns back off again. Up first, changing the rules on alcohol sales at levi stadium. The proposal to ban booze after halftime. Youre not going to tell your dad about the time my hamster had babies in the backseat, are you . thats just normal wear and tear, dude. vo subaru has the highest resale value of any brand. According to kelley blue book. And mitch. Love. Its what makes a subaru, a subaru. The city of santa clara is going to discuss whether to cut off alcohol sales at levi stadium after halftime at 49er games. It is considered because of that postgame brawl last sunday night. Police arrested four 49ers fans for attacking a minnesota viking fan. Now they think its time to send a message to out of control fans. But not everyone agrees that cutting back on alcohol sales is the answer. I think the owners will protest. The fans wont show up. Because you can sit in your living room and drink beer. Reporter im not against cutting off alcohol early, but i dont think its going to solve the issue. I think were really keeling with a small percentage dealing with a small percentage of fans. Theyre expected to take up the alcohol is issue at tomorrow nights meeting. Now to fairfield, where an elderly woman narrowly escaped a house fire. It moved so quickly, firefighters called four alarms and streets were shut down, and homes evacuated. It also prompted a frantic effort to make sure people were safe before emergency crews arrived. Dorothy todd lost her home of 63 years. But she got out alive, thanks to her neighbors. People were knocking at my door, then i saw the fire down there. The next thing i know it was in my yard. We narrowly had to rip over her garage door. We checked her backyard, it was already, the fire was touching her window. The fire also damaged several power poles. The cause of this fire is under investigation. Governor jerry brown sent a letter to president obama today asking him to declare the valley fire a major disaster. A president ial declaration would release federal money to supplement the state and local Fire Recovery efforts. It has burned nearly 76,000 acres. It has also destroyed 1200 homes. More than a week out from the valley fire and people are still sounding off about the red cross. It seems the charity stepped on some toes with how it handled charities and volunteers. Reporter the fire has cooled, but a lot of people are still hot about this. Critics say the agency is more interested in making money than working cooperatively to help people. Fire victims arrived, help right on their heels. It was great to be able to jump in and be needed, and be productive for literally like 7, 8 hours straight. Reporter people poured in to do whatever was needed. We started a new bedding pile over there. Reporter and donated goods. New and used flowed into the fairground. Weve, in essence, built another village inside the village. Reporter but the local organization, found things changed when the red cross arrived and started taking over. They told us that we were doing this illegally. Reporter this volunteer worker to Bring Organization to the chaos was stunned when red cross tried to shut down incoming donations. Specifying cash only. Reporter how can i help get these items to the evacuees . And they were saying thats not my job. Reporter so she and others persisted on their own. A few hundred volunteers each day. Some who tried red cross first. We were turned away. Told they didnt need any help, or told, well take your name down and well give you a call. Youve got volunteers in the area, they are stressed out. Reporter fire zones reopen. It insists its mission is tending to essential needs, and those can be overwhelmed by the expense and responsibility of donated items, plus it wants volunteers to have red cross training. With the safety regulations that were under to issue licenses, we have to be careful. A bit of a turf battle . I think a bit of a communication difference. Reporter a truth when another agency came in, organizing, and saving donations for fire victims to use later. Still it appears some goodwill, and good stuff were squandered. The red cross is saying we have enough volunteers and enough donated items and actually turned away some really important people. So unfortunate. Very unfortunate. Reporter one fact indisputable, the victims saw what was done for them, and it mattered. Nonstop help. It really changes our thought processes, and takes the edge off. Reporter American Red Cross is the go to organization in a disaster, but its been slammed before for secrecy, poor performance, and wasting funds. Auditors are calling for oversight. Critics say that on the ground there, they could have done better. So disappointing for all of those folks who were just looking for some help. Absolutely. Thanks deb. Tracking the forecast as we go into your bay area tuesday. Its going to cool off quite a bit. It was hot the last few days. A heat advisory today, a spare the air day today. Not the case tomorrow. Cooler air mass moving in with fog coming back along the coast, and also all of this subtropical moisture is not going to really bother us. But you can see its coming up from an old tropical storm. Parts of los angeles, maybe even flooding as you get out towards arizona and new mexico. For us, fog back at the coast. Right now, its 75 in antioch. Its pretty warm. But its going to be cooler tomorrow, youll notice it. Theres the fog, just goes right to the coast, maybe a little bit gets in tomorrow morning in the gate here and a cooler day. Instead of 102, or 103, today, were looking at temperatures mostly in the upper 70s around the bay, mid70s. San francisco downtown for your tuesday, just 66 degrees for daytime high. Thats down from 95 degrees just a couple of days ago. When i come back, well talk about the cool down for tomorrow, theres a heat up, ill see you right back here after a couple breaks. Still here, diving for abalone. Thousands do it here, sometimes with deadly results. Ken wayne takes us diving to show why its so dangerous. And the monday night mistake by a former 49er. Later tonight, mark ibanez shows us how frank gores goal line fumble is costly. Tonight, Palo Alto Police released a sketch of a man they say robbed a woman. Selling 18 homes . Easy. Building them all in four and a half months . Now that was a leap. I was calling in every favor i could, to track down enough lumber to get the job done. And i knew i could rely on American Express to help me buy those building materials. There are always going to be unknowns. You just have to be ready for them. Another step on the journey. Will you be ready when growth presents itself . Realize your buying power at open. Com new at 10 00, a Police Sketch just released, investigators want to find a man who punched a woman and stole her purse, all while she was tending to her baby in a stroller. They say it was a random attack in a busy road. Police want to catch this guy really badly. Reporter yeah, this really is terrible. This attack happened right in front of the newsstands right here in front of this phils coffee, all in broad daylight. Thankfully, the mother and the baby, theyre okay, but understandably, this neighborhood is shaken up. Here on middle field road, neighbors call it one of the more frondly diverse corners of palo alto, where people walk, bike, drink coffee, and mothers take their children out for a stroll. On sunday night, police say around 6 40 in the evening, in the beaming sun a mother in her 30s was pushing the baby on the sidewalk when the infant started crying. Police saw a robber saw her a as easy prey. She felt somebody tugging at her purse and ripped the purse off her shoulder and ran away. Reporter police say he coldcocked her. The woman suffered an abrasion to her ear. The baby unharmed. He says hes never encountered a crime like this one in his 17 year career. This is a total new one for me, and its disgusting. I cant think of a more cowardly act. Reporter while the target is surprising, whats also surprising is where it happened in front of this busy strip mall with plenty of foot traffic. Workers say it was customers who sprang into action and helped the mother, giving chase to the suspect last seen heading inside a nearby residential neighborhood. I dont understand how and where this came from, this is not your kind of local place that you wouldnt take on an activity like this. It just doesnt make sense. Reporter Police Believe it is an isolated incident, but are stepping up patrols. Meantime, locals to the area cant help but be more vigilant now. Its concerning. You have to watch your back wherever youre going. Reporter take another good look at the sketch. Police are relying heavily on this sketch since they say despite the businesses out here, they dont have any useable Surveillance Video of the suspects. And heather, again, police want to say if anybod
