Thank you. Protesters toppled a confederate statue this evening in durham, north carolina. The statue depicted a confederate soldier with an engraving that said the Confederate States of america. Organizers called it an emergency protest in response to the violence in charlottesville. New at 11 00, people from different faiths got together in walnut creek tonight for a peace vigil. Organizers asked people to bring signs and prayers and stand in solidarity with the people of charlottesville. About 100 people turned out for the event. It was hosted by the Interfaith Council of contra costa count. The executive director says people attended the rally in virginia so its important to address the issue of racism in places like walnut creek. We hope it makes a difference here in walnut creek because we know that 25 of the people that live here voted for President Trump. And we want to be a part of the healing and restoration of community and neighborliness rather than the division. The council is encouraging people to help solve these divisions with acts of peace. Joining us now, ktvu political analyst brian sobel. The president has been criticized pretty strongly by member s of his own party over what happened in charlottesville. Were expecting more protests by white nationalists. Do you expect to see further divisions within the gop . What id expect first is the president is going to amp up his discussion of the issue. And when i think it probably will mirror what we heard today. The problem is when he had the opportunity on saturday to come out strongly, he fumbled the ball, frankly, and hes now got to recover from that. Reporter white house aide steve bannon and miller have been criticized for their alt right views. Do you think President Trump should continue letting them advise him or keep them in the white house . Its an optics question and i dont think its good to keep people in the white house who have sharp views on either side, especially far to the right or far to the left. I think hes got to take that in to account. His Approval Rating has dropped even further. Its down around 34 right now in the latest gallup poll. How do you think this is playing with the trump voter who maybe voted for him for economic reasons or other reasons besides these racist issues that obviously did attract for some reason people . One of the things to remember is among the polling that were seeing, the base isnt being moved a whole lot. Its the people who are fringe trump supporters. Theyve gone pretty quiet over the last couple of days quite frankly. How it plays with candidates will be interesting to see. Heres the reason. Trump was never a republican per se. He was a populist. He utilized the Republican Party as a vehicle to get to the presidency. He didnt have tremendous loyalty in congress by a lot of the republicans. Listen to lindsey graham. So he hasnt come very far to accepting President Trump. So i think thats going to be worth watching. Who follows republicans because they think it helps the president. Cole white worked at the restaurant. A picture of him showed up on a twitter site called yes, you are a racist. Managers called white while he was in virginia. They say he chose to resign and they chose to accept that resignation. A top dog customer weighed in. The most Dangerous Things about people who have issues with race or strong hateful feelings, this is hiding in plain view. You never understand who could be in this case scenario, a man working here serving you hotdogs. Berkeley police say they stepped up patrols near all three berkeley top dog restaurants. A Pro Trump Group that held a contentious rally in seattle this weekend is planning a similar demonstration in the bay area later this month. Members of Patriot Prayer held their demonstration in downtown seattle one day after the violence in virginia. Seattle police and protesters clashed during the rally and counter demonstration. There was a lot of pushing and shoving over the course of several hours but no reports of any serious injuries. That same group though has already obtained permits for a demonstration at San Franciscos crissy field on saturday, august 26th. Another Pro Trump Group is planning a rally the following day in downtown berkeley. Counter demonstrations are also planned. A homeless man was found guilty of reckless burning today for his role in a fire that caused extensive damage to Half Moon Bay greenhouses. Investigators say a couple transients identified 38yearold Alberto Flores as a suspect. They say he admitted to burning papers on the floor of an office. That apparently sparked a larger fire. He was not charged with arson but could get up to seven years in prison because he has a prior criminal strike for residential burglary. A lake county man is in custody tonight after a confrontation with caltrans workers. Police say the man was outraged about what the road crew was doing so he shot at them and then he disappeared. That triggered a daylong manhunt to the property off highway 29 south of kelseyville. Debora villalon has details on why the suspect was so angry and how the situation was finally resolved. Reporter 43yearold joshua brown, known as buck, is in the Lake County Jail but only after a tumultuous day that began when caltrans came to his rural property. Brown recently lost a Court Dispute and was ordered to let another land owner share his driveway. So he dumped debris all over it and carved out this new one illegally. As soon as caltrans dropped a krail on it, brown came running down the road, appeared to have a gun, and started shouting at the workers. They went back, he brought his pickup back and had a rifle and shot a couple rounds at Highway Patrol. Reporter the supervisor, who is also a neighbor, said he warned caltrans there might be trouble. Said you better make sure Law Enforcement is there because this is not going to go over well at all. I know him really well. Really well. Reporter road blocks were set up when brown took off running. At one point firing three more shots toward Law Enforcement. S. W. A. T. Swarmed the area and a few dozen households in the vicinity were warned to lock themselves inside or leave while brown was roaming. I took my family inside. Respectful of the situation and wanted to keep my family safe. I dont know what made him crack, but im just glad he didnt get hurt and none of the officers got hurt. They finally approached a house where they gave announcements over the p. A. System and the suspect voluntarily surrendered without any violence. Look at the confederate flag. Hes got a lot of issues going on. I wouldnt put much stock in that. Hes always got some kind of protest thing going on. Weve all been watching it. We go by here four, five times a day and see something new going on. Reporter all day his mother tried to help, and the threat of more gunfire. Hes had enough of the judicial system. Reporter brown will face an array of charges including criminal threats and assault with a Deadly Weapon on peace officers. The sheriff says he has no criminal record but they have been getting reports of erratic behavior and threats this year, escalating after he lost his court case. Californias attorney general is joining San Francisco officials in pushing back against the federal governments threat to withhold money from sanctuary cities. Attorney general javier beserra along with City Attorney Dennis Herrera are suing the Trump Administration. They say the president s executive order to withhold federal funding could cost the city 28 million in federal funds. Back here in the bay area, the Highway Patrol is running down leads after another freeway shooting. This time it happened in the southbound lanes of interstate 880 in san leandro near lewell ing boulevard. Report of highway violence. Hit in the head with a bullet. Around 2 30 this morning, we had calls about a road rage incident, someone in the area on interstate 80. Shortly after that we got another call for shots fired. Reporter several other men in a white car pulled up and at least one of them opened fire. The driver was shot in the head, but managed to pull in to the center divide. Officers responded. When they arrived, they found one vehicle in the number one lane. Four occupants, one critically injured from a gunshot wound. Reporter chp shut down all southbound lanes of 880 for six hours, backing up traffic for miles. The chp Investigative Services unit, which investigates freeway shootings, was called in, as was a major accident investigation team. So far they dont have much of a description of the shooter or the white car. We dont have anything. We dont have anything except for it was a white sedan. If anybody was in this area around 2 30, you heard something, saw something, please call chp and tell them. Reporter motorists we talked to say they are unnerved by this latest freeway shooting. Marys road and stan lee park. Police were called to the scene around 3 00 this afternoon. The worker became trapped and died from his injuries. Police say he was 35 years old but they havent released his name yet, pending notification of his family. Deadpool 2 star Ryan Reynolds says actors and crew members are devastated about the death of a motorcycle stunt woman in vancouver, canada. It happened today during the filming of a sequel to the 2016 comedy deadpool which stars reynolds as a foulmouthed marvel superhero. Police confirmed the death of the woman near the set of the movie but gave no other details. Local media reported she lost control of the motorcycle, drove off the set, and crashed in to a window in a building across the street. A jury in denver ruled today in favor of taylor swift and her counter suit against a former radio host. The pop star accused david muller of groping her at the pepsi center four years ago.
